Pâté de foie gras AGAIN Mon, 19 Apr 2010 13:53:36 GMT (image)My Grandfather again (left) His wife Else did not hear from him for ages and the postal service was interrupted. The postcards usually just read "Alive". My Grandmother was listening to the BBC (highly illegal) that the Germans did not need fighting anymore because they where starving to death but she did not beleive the German propaganda either. When my Grandfather (Kurt) [Dr. Pfrof Ing. bitteschoen], heard about her worries, he did this self portrait with his best friend and he send the photo as a post card to her. The Pate he received from the Vicar in St Quintin because he warned the Vicar that the Cathedral is an artillery target and my Grandfather used his men to save the more valuable relics before the fires started. On the note it reads "Oh, Pâté de foie gras AGAIN!"
Joey - Hands Thu, 08 Apr 2010 11:36:51 GMT (image)Hands across the generations. Taken by my wife with my camera under my direction!
What a lovely war (WW1) Thu, 11 Mar 2010 21:11:05 GMT (image)My grandfather (FG) in front of his temp home. (Self portrait) I asked him what the white bit above his bunker was. A shell from the Brits he told me, dropped by a friend he made in the trenches.- The dog on the right was his sniffer dog called Schorschi. During Night recognisance in the mixed up and joining trenches he bumped into a Brit and they where both frightened off each other but decided to drop their guns and made a sensible decision. The Brit asked "Wurst" ?(sausages) , my Grandfather replied "Zigarren"? Cigars. They met again under utter secrecy and exchanged their goods and neither one of them where asked questions about the origination when returning. Then the male ego started, who is the better shooter (Artillery), they became "friends" and the Brit promised my grandfather to show him his skills by dropping a small one (My Grandfather called it "Frauenfurtz), a woman's fart, on top of his bunker. This in the picture is THAT woman's fart but he was warned about the time this would happen. Boys are boys and my grandfather retaliated with deliberately low angle back fire which did not hurt anyone but proved that he knew too. I asked my grandfather if he was ever worried to die and he said:"We all do, sooner or later"- He lived 99 1/2 years, never intended to go for the full 100, blew his own candle out by simply closing his eyes after he has written a good by letter to every member in the family. I have many pictures that I am planning to scan and keep. Most are on glass plates and it is amazing to think he developed this during the war. This shot was hardly recognisable, so faded.
