Rox fall despite Arenado's HR, Gray's solid start

Wed, 23 Aug 2017 01:09:58 EDT

Royals left-hander Danny Duffy appeared to have no-hit stuff from the get-go. Duffy fired a no-hitter for 5 2/3 innings before Colorado's Nolan Arenado clubbed his 28th home run, a two-run shot. The Royals hung on for a 3-2 win on Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium after the Rockies loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, and left-hander Scott Alexander got the final out after coming in for closer Kelvin Herrera, who left with an apparent injury.

Gray sees positives in loss to Royals

Wed, 23 Aug 2017 00:50:25 EDT

Right-hander Jon Gray made just three significant mistakes among his 101 pitches in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday night. But due to the experienced Royals hitters he was facing and his team's struggling offense, that added up to a 3-2 loss at Kauffman Stadium.

A big 'fail' for Anderson on Players Weekend

Wed, 23 Aug 2017 02:20:41 EDT

Many of the Rockies nicknames for Players Weekend are dead giveaways. "Cargo" and "Nado" aren't exactly head-scratchers. But two monikers that will be worn Friday through Sunday on the jerseys of pitcher Tyler Anderson and infielder Ian Desmond are slightly more complex.

Wed, 23 Aug 2017 13:38:02 EDT

It has been 133 years since a phenom named Pete Browning broke his bat in a game and received a custom-made replacement from John Hillerich's woodworking shop in Louisville, Ky. Legend has it that Browning, the "Louisville Slugger," had three hits the next day.

Blackmon takes aim at 150 runs

Wed, 23 Aug 2017 11:52:29 EDT

The Rockies, who lost two of three in the series, remain one game up on the D-backs in the NL Wild Card chase. Mark Reynolds had a home run, but the Rockies were 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Scuffling offense has slowed Rockies

Sun, 20 Aug 2017 21:17:55 EDT

With the playoff race heating up, now is not a good time for the Rockies' bats to go cold. Since their Aug. 6 loss to the Phillies, the Rockies have averaged 4.4 runs per game, including their 17-run barrage against the Braves on Wednesday. But remove that contest and the average falls to 3.3 runs per game.

Blackmon hitting more opposite-field homers

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 17:00:00 EDT

Even Rockies leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon isn't sure what to make of a recent happy trend. He opened Friday night's 8-4 victory over the Brewers with his career-high-tying 29th homer. It went the opposite way to left-center field -- which is becoming less unusual.

Rockies rally late but fall to Brewers

Sun, 20 Aug 2017 01:33:34 EDT

Jesus Aguilar had a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the ninth as the Brewers topped the Rockies. Teammate Travis Shaw also went deep, his 27th of the season. Charlie Blackmon had an RBI single in the eighth as the Rockies tied the score, but closer Greg Holland allowed three runs in the ninth, as Colorado remained one game up in the NL Wild Card race. The Brewers are two games back of the Cubs in the NL Central. Chad Bettis settled down after a rough start, allowing three runs over seven innings.
