Woodruff, Lackey up next in Crew-Cubs clash

Fri, 22 Sep 2017 13:02:56 EDT

The winner of the National League Central could be determined in this four-game series between the Cubs and the Brewers, but both teams are trying to keep things in perspective. On Friday at Miller Park, it'll be Cubs veteran John Lackey starting against Brewers rookie Brandon Woodruff, who will be making his seventh big league start. Lackey has made seven postseason starts in the last three years.

Javier Baez hit a tying two-out RBI single in the ninth, Wade Davis escaped a bases-loaded jam to force extra innings and Kris Bryant's two-run home run in the 10th sent Chicago to a 5-3 win in the opener of a four-game series that could decide the NL Central.

Crew cuts lead to 1; hardest throw of '17 key

Wed, 20 Sep 2017 02:05:59 EDT

Chase Anderson continued his string of solid starts by pitching six scoreless innings, and Domingo Santana backed him with a solo homer in a 1-0 win over the Pirates on Tuesday at PNC Park. The shutout was also aided by the burgeoning reputation of center fielder Brett Phillips, who kept the potential tying run from even thinking of trying to score from third in the sixth on a flyout to center. Phillips unleashed a 104.7-mph throw to the plate -- the hardest-thrown ball this season, according to Statcast™ -- and he now owns the top three hardest outfield throws for 2017.
