Trailing by one run entering the ninth inning, the Royals got a bloop RBI single by Abraham Almonte to tie it, then took the lead when Tigers first baseman Niko Goodrum botched a routine grounder by Jon Jay, and overthrew the pitcher covering the bag, allowing Alcides Escobar to score in Game 2 of the doubleheader. JaCoby Jones, the walk-off hero in Game 1, had put the Tigers in front with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Jakob Junis went eight strong innings in a no-decision for Kansas City, which snapped a nine-game skid.

Royals rookie left-hander Tim Hill looked in the mirror and hardly recognized himself. A skeleton, he thought. He needed to take a photo, perhaps just to remind himself one day of this trying time in his life. It was the fall of 2015, and Hill was near completion of eight months of chemotherapy. Incredibly, he had lost 70 pounds during the treatment. He stood 6-foot-1, 150 pounds.
