Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:26:44 EDT

The Cubs are headed to the World Series for the first time since 1945 after they defeated Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, 5-0, in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series on Saturday night at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Cubs won the best-of-seven series, four games to two, to wrap up the 11th NL pennant in franchise history.

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:06:52 EDT

Less than an hour after the Cubs had secured their first trip to the World Series since 1945, chairman Tom Ricketts, former pitcher Kerry Wood and Hall of Famer Billy Williams had a quiet moment in the clubhouse. They tapped their drinks together in a toast to a team that has a chance to do something that hasn't been done in more than 100 years.

C to shining C! Cleveland awaits Cubs

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 01:19:51 EDT

The visitors' clubhouse at Wrigley Field has never been described as spacious. Players are pretty confined underneath the Friendly Confines, lacking much room between lockers to maneuver. A champagne celebration could be chaotic inside Chicago's cramped quarters.

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 01:50:29 EDT

The text arrived early Saturday, just as it does on the morning before each of the son's starts. John Hendricks scripts it to be simple -- "You don't want to clutter him" -- and positive, hoping it's a reminder that dad is watching and rooting and so very proud.

Chappily ever after: Final outs for the ages

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 03:01:16 EDT

In a postseason filled with unconventional pitching decisions and bullpen moves by the managers, Cubs skipper Joe Maddon inserting closer Aroldis Chapman into the eighth inning with a man on first base in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field on Saturday didn't seem, on its face, all that unusual.

Oldest Indians champion rooting for new winners

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 23:21:12 EDT

It is a unique distinction, but it's one Eddie Robinson has no interest in maintaining. The last living member of the last Indians team to win the World Series? That's not exactly a badge of honor for the 95-year-old former first baseman on the 1948 champs. "I think it's time," Robinson said. "And this may be the year."

For Merullo family, Cubs' World Series run 'beautiful'

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 00:34:15 EDT

The scar was his souvenir, the physical reminder of his professional height. And so, on the off chance it was fixing to fade, the old man used to pick at that thing on his left forearm, a habit that would have been disgusting if it weren't so oddly endearing.

Dodgers left to ponder what went wrong

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:47:43 EDT

Four straight years they've watched October opponents go dog-pile-silly celebrating on the field. Then they trudge to the clubhouse, empty their lockers and pack their bags for a grim flight home and the start of another offseason of anguish. This time it resulted from Saturday night's 5-0 Game 6 loss to the Cubs and elimination from the NLCS.

Catch this: Cubs' catchers make HR history

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:04:10 EDT

In this year's National League playoffs, the Cubs' catchers exceeded all expectations at the plate, matching average with power. In fact, Chicago is the first team in history to have all three of its catchers hit a home run in the same postseason, helping to propel the Cubs to their first NL pennant since 1945.

Series-bound Cubs praise Kershaw, Dodgers

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:40:22 EDT

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:47:34 EDT

As Clayton Kershaw faced a wall of cameras in a dark tunnel beneath Wrigley Field, he could hear Cubs fans celebrating away decades of futility. Quietly, reluctantly, respectfully, Kershaw and the Dodgers tipped their caps to the champions of the National League.

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 01:38:39 EDT

Trouble with the curve: Kershaw can't follow script

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 02:14:01 EDT

After making so much progress this postseason to erase the notion that he can't pitch in October, Clayton Kershaw showed up to Game 6 without a curveball, and the Cubs made him pay.

For every challenge, Tribe has found solution

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 00:00:39 EDT

Every team encounters adversity throughout a baseball season. In the wake of setbacks, fans are often left wondering what their team might have accomplished if so many things had not gone wrong. For Cleveland, which is preparing for the World Series, the question is a little different this year. Could the Indians have pulled this off if everything had gone according to plan?

Cubs get to Kershaw early in NLCS clincher

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 22:48:02 EDT

As Wrigleyville teemed with anticipation about a potential historic night ahead, the Cubs gave the sellout crowd an early reason to cheer -- and relax -- by jumping on Clayton Kershaw for two first-inning runs in a 5-0 Game 6 victory in the National League Championship Series on Saturday night. With the win, the Cubs advanced to the World Series for the first time since 1945.

Doby, Paige highlight special 1948 World Series

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 00:08:30 EDT

Jackie Robinson and Dan Bankhead became the first African-American players to appear in the World Series as members of the National League-champion Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. But there are other thresholds worth celebrating, and it was the '48 Indians that became the first World Series-winning ballclub to feature African-American players, in Larry Doby and Satchel Paige.

How baseball has changed since 1908

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 20:11:26 EDT

Each of the final three franchises still alive this postseason has waited a long time to bring home another championship. But while their World Series trophy collections have remained stagnant, the game itself has changed considerably.

Whereabouts of Tribe's '48 title pennant remains a mystery

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 23:57:21 EDT

It once flapped in the breeze above old Municipal Stadium, a physical representation of a triumphant World Series title that the Indians have fought futilely to reclaim for the past 68 years. Our best guess is that it was upwards of 15 feet wide, a broad banner broadcasting Cleveland's clout to any and all. And because the importance of that 1948 outcome has only grown in measure with each successive season that has led to this 2016 return to the Fall Classic stage, you could say the importance of this pennant has only grown in importance, too. Now, if only we knew where the heck it is.
