Saudi Sovereign Fund to create more than 20,000 Jobs

Saudi Arabia' Public Investment Fund (PIF), the country's main sovereign wealth fund, expects to create over 20,000 jobs by 2020 through its projects, the fund's managing director said.
Yasir Al Rumayyan was speaking at a major investment conference titled Future Investment Initiative in the capital Riyadh.

As part of Saudi Arabia's economic reforms announced last year, the Saudi government plans to expand the PIF, founded in 1971, to finance development projects in the country.

Part of the plans also involves the sale of a stake in Aramco, the state oil juggernaut.
Its chief executive said that domestic and international exchanges such as New York, London, Tokyo and Hong Kong have been looked at for a partial listing of the state oil giant.

"All detailed information is currently being reviewed by our shareholder and in due course, a decision will be made about the listing venue," Amin Nasser said at an investment conference in Riyadh.

Aramco's IPO is on track to take place next year, Mr Al Rumayyan said "Everything is on track. 2018 is our target. There is nothing that I know about that can take us off track."

Asked if the possible involvement of investors such as the Chinese would delay the IPO, Mr Rumayyan, who sits on the board of Aramco, said it would not.

Apple hiring more diverse workers but women

Apple made some progress in hiring more minorities. But when it comes to women, its efforts fell flat. The company on Thursday released its annual diversity and inclusion report, the first since creating a new vice president position to oversee the area. Denise Young Smith, Apple's former head of HR, was named to the role in May.Only about a third of Apple employees as of July 2017 were women, the same level as last year, the company said. When it came to underrepresented minorities, Apple reported a 1 percentage point increase to 23 percent. In the US, Apple's workforce was 54 percent white, down two percentage points from the year earlier."We're proud of our accomplishments, but we have much more work to do," Apple said in its report. Apple has 130,000 full- and part-time employees around the world, with 83,000 of those working in the US. Its figures include its Apple Store employees, not just the engineers, designers and others working for the corporate parent. Apple and other tech companies have been trying to diversify their workforce, which includes boosting the number of female and minority employees. Under CEO Tim Cook's leadership, Apple has put itself at the front of social issues like LGBT rights, racial equality and the tech industry's need to improve workforce diversity. Still, it's been difficult for Apple and its peers to show significant percentage increases in diversifying its employee base.Apple said Thursday that the total number of female employees stayed flat at 32 percent as of July 2017. The company touted an improvement in attracting younger female employees. The number of female employees under the age of 30 has increased 5 percentage points over the past three years to 36 percent. Over that same timeframe, the total number of female employees has risen 2 percentage points, which equals 37,000 women. Apple's top leadership has shown little improvement in terms of boosting the number of women. In the past year, the number of women in leadership roles rose 1 percentage point to 29 percent. That was after staying flat at 28 percent from 2014 to 2016.Only one woman, retail chief Angela Ahrendts, holds a title of senior vice president or higher, though Apple has promoted women to lower leadership levels in recent months, including Deidre O'Brien to vice president of people and Isabel Mahe to managing director of Greater China. "Our female representation is steadily increasing, and we're proud of the progress we're making," Apple said in its diversity report. Apple also said that it's been actively hiring more employees from "historically underrepresented groups in tech -- women, black, Hispanic, Native American, and Native Hawaiian & other Pacific Islander." From July 2016 to July 2017, 50 percent of its new hires came from those groups. The company said 15 percent of its new hires over the past year are Hispanic, while 11 percent are black. [...]

How to make a good impression in an Interview

Acing the interviewA job interview gives you the opportunity to not only showcase your capabilities and credentials for the position applied for but also makes a compelling impression to stand out from the competing candidates. But you need to take care of a lot of factors such as preparation, physical appearance and body language to create a favourable impression. Get the basics rightKeep the fundamentals in mind while going for a job interview. Dressing sharply and being punctual is of prime importance. Ideally, reach the interview venue at least 15 minutes before time. Don't show yourself as being nervous; be calm when you head in for the meetingFocus on the handshakeThe handshake is absolutely essential in cementing a positive first impression. Shake hands firmly with your interviewer(s). Your grip should not be limp, neither should it be bone-crushing. The ideal handshake should last at least two or three seconds and be accompanied by eye contact with the interviewer.Pay attention to body languageHiring managers form impressions about candidates by observing their body languages, such as facial expressions and their style of sitting.Maintain a positive, open position. Posture is important; candidates can sit at an angle from the interviewer rather than straight across, which will feel friendlier rather than confrontational.Don't jump into negotiationsDo be sure to inquireabout the job -its challenges, projects you will work on and the expectations from you in the role. Don't jump to ask salary or designation. This will create a negative impression. Demonstrate your fitment and interest in the role confidently, respectfully and enthusiastically.Don't be disrespectfulAn interview should not be the place to say anything that could be remotely construed as disrespectful. Cracking informal jokes, badmouthing previous organisations or bosses, or even trying to appear 'too cool' for the interview can leave a very negative impression, so behave and speak carefully.[...]

UAE & GCC schools need thousands of Teachers in coming years

The UAE and GCC's education sector holds bright prospects for teachers and the other general administration staff as demand will grow in coming years in line with the surgein population across the region. The shortage of teachers in the region is also the second highest in the world as the profession is of less interest to the locals who prefer to work in highly paid public-sector jobs. Although the region has a lower pupil-teacher ratio of 17 compared to the world average, the countries face challenges in recruiting highly qualified teachers. Growing demand for teachers at international schools in the UAE of at least 14,000 over the next five years and in Saudi Arabia of 183,600 by 2030 will pose further problems, Marmore Mena Intelligence said in its report.MR Raghu, managing director of Marmore Mena Intelligence, says a shortage of qualified staff is still a challenge faced by many institutions in the UAE. Private players need to offer salaries above the global average to attract quality staff. Over the period of next 3 years, about 10,000 staff are expected to be recruited. The influx of private institutions is expected in the coming years to meet the growing demand.Favourable demographics, rising disposable income, government initiatives and the willingness of parents to spend on education are expected to be key growth drivers for the education sector. The average spending for education in the UAE is nearly twice that of the global average and the average tuition fee for private institutions in the UAE has grown at a compound annual growth rate of five percent since 2011.According to Mahboob Murshed, managing director of Alpen Capital, the total number of students in the UAE is projected to grow at an annualised rate of 4.1 percent, from an estimated 1.1 million in 2015 to 1.4 million in 2020; there are around 220 schools forecasted to be set up in the UAE by 2020. Irteza Ahmed, director of Investments at Amanat Holdings, which holds stakes in educational institutions including Madaares, says there areconsiderable planning and visibility regarding new schools opening in 2018 - and along with existing supply, these new schools will help address demand in the market. With respect to teachers, the UAE remains an attractive destination for teachers trained locally and across the globe. Ahmed sees overall tuition fees to remain stabilised in the UAE due in part to constructive initiatives by regulatory bodies such as the KHDA and ADEK.According to Mahboob Murshed, the population in the GCC is projected to reach close to 60 million in 2020, 40 percent of whom are below 25 years of age. The total number of students in the GCC education is projected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6 percent from an estimated 12.6 million in 2015 to reach 15 million in 2020."Saudi Arabia will lead the way with almost 7,000 schools expected to come up in the kingdom in the next five years to meet the growing requirements and manage the current shortfall. On the other hand, the number of educational institutions in Dubai is heading for a potential oversupply and this may further intensify competition in the sector," Murshed said. The demand for schools in the GCC region is likely to increase at a three percentCAGR from an estimated 43,903 in 2015 to 50,978 in 2020. Saudi Arabia will continue to dominate the education market in the GCC. In terms of annualised growth during 2015 to 2020, the number of students in Oman, Qatar and the UAE are projected to grow faster than the other member nations, he added. From an estimated 9.2 million in 2015, the total number of students in Saudi Arabia is projected to grow at an annualised rate of 3.5 percent to 11 million in 2020 signifying a requirement for more than 7,000 schools in the next five years in the kingdom. Saudi Arabia also aims to build 1,500 nurseries by 2020, he added.[...]

Excellent Qualities of an Outstanding Employee

Work Ethic A valuable characteristic an employee can possess in any working environment is a good strong work ethic. If you're wondering what defines work ethic, one such qualifier is making sure you're where you need to be on time and for the duration of the time of which you're being compensated. Other qualifiers are discussed below. Most of us who work hard value this trait and are sometimes affected by co-employees who have a differing view of their role with a company. Attitudes might develop towards the employee who doesn't value work ethic. This creates hard feelings especially when a lack of work ethic isn't noticed or addressed. We have to remember that we have to tune out matters which are not relevant to what our own personal job performance is based on. If someone else's lack of work ethic becomes an annoyance that begins to affect the quality of your performance, then the subject should be taken up with the appropriate individual at your place of employment.IntegrityI can't think of an employer who won't place value on an honest employee especially if you're working with a lot of material that is strictly confidential. Plus, you want to be trusted and trust is very important in any relationship, working or otherwise. Integrity will begin by not providing false information on your application.Positive AttitudeThere is nothing like coming into the office on a Monday morning and hearing a bunch of crabby people telling you how awful their weekend was, and how already they can't wait until it's Friday. Talk about wishing your life away--if any job is that bad, try to find another one. This negativity makes you want to climb back on the elevator, doesn't it?A very effective influence in the working environment is a consistently positive attitude. You know you have to learn to work with different personalities, so treat them all the same. Avoid the person you will never be able to influence to smile and stop asking the negative employee how he or she is doing because you will hear about it for possibly 30 minutes of your working schedule. Your positive attitude will be reflected inyour evaluation. You weren't hired to complain. If you have a concern, there is an appropriate way to express it as well as the right go-to person.Self-MotivationIf you have 10 piles of work on your desk, map out a plan to get that work accomplished and moved off your desk. Don't wait for someone to come tell you what to do. If you have a question, ask someone to help you find the answer or go to the appropriate person in your office for suggestions or guidance. Do not just sit at your desk drinking coffee while you send out text messages. You're paid to work. Be a go-getter, be proactive. If you want a good review and a good working reputation, ask yourself what you can be doing to make your company or your supervisor look better because that's another factor that will lend itself towards positive feedback in your direction. Strong Systematic and Organizational AbilitiesLet's say you have an office in a long hallway, or a cubicle, if you want to attract attention, then keep piling debris on your desk. If you want positive attention, do something with the debris because the message you send out is that you're just not that organized. Employers like to know their employees are organized and have generated some type of system to make their job run smoothly. If you generate a system to organize materials required to perform your job responsibilities, then you will actually be able to find things when you need them quickly!Good ListenerWhether you're starting a new job or you've been at one for a long time, practice and practice being a good listener. Be a good observer too. When you're given instructions for a new project, if you're not paying attention, which essentially means listening to deta[...]

LinkedIn HR exec shares the No. 1 Mistake people make Interview

Job seekers know that making a good first impression in an interview is important. But leaving a positive, lasting impression is just as significant, if not more so.The best way to make sure an interviewer remembers you well past the conversation is to always ask questions at the end — something many job applicants don't do, says Brendan Browne, the global head of talent for LinkedIn."If people don't have questions, that's a concern," Browne tells. In fact, he says that it's the No.1 mistake he sees people making during the hiring process."It's sort of impossible to not have questions," says the HR exec. "You won't get everything in a 45-minute interview that you need."Asking questions shows that you have been paying attention during the interview and that you are eager to learn more about the company, says the head of global talent.Browne explains that when a prospective candidate doesn't ask questions, it raises red flags."Is this emblematic of not being inquisitive or collaborative?" he says. "Questions are one of the most important things."Browne gives pointers on questions you can ask: "Ask about [the interviewer's] experiences. What challenges do they face? What's next for the company and what's up ahead?"This final segment of your interview can either make you a front-runner for the job or significantly hurt your chances. In a nutshell, it's your last chance to truly show that you were engaged and demonstrate that you are already thinking about the company's future and how you fit into the business. However, one question you shouldn't bring up right away is salary, says Browne, who warns that you should not discuss money early on in the conversation."There area time and a place to bring it up," says Browne. As the head of global talent at LinkedIn, Browne says that alignment with the company is the most important thing that he looks for. Constantly asking about pay, he says, slows down the interview process and is a turnoff for the hiring manager. The HR exec notes that salary is an important discussion to have, although it's really all about when you choose to bring it up. The first interview is probably not your best bet, he says.In fact, Browne says that when compensation is brought up too early and too frequently during the hiring process, he usually responds by saying, "If that's the most important thing, this may not be the right place for you.""We pay well," he adds."But what keeps people here is helping us execute on very important decisions. Don't bring [money] up early."[...]

Advanced Micro Devices(AMD) to hire 500 Engineers in India

American multinational semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices is planning to expand its team in India nearly 40% by hiring 500 engineers to strengthen its focus on new technologies including augmented reality and virtual reality (AR and VR). In addition to this, the company is also looking to reskill its employees in AR and VR. “We are looking at AR and VR for now. We will hire fresh talent, but also we are heavily investing in upskilling and reskilling our existing employees to contribute to the changing demands,” said Kiranmai Pendyala, chief operating officer-HR, AMD This is similar to its strategy a few years ago when it started working on game console technologies and shifted a part of its workforce to the new unit. “We had set up the Radeon Technologies group to exclusively work in the graphics space, and identified machine learning and virtual reality as new growth sectors for us,” Pendyala said.Initially, AMD did not have these skillsets among its employees in Hyderabad and had to bring in some talent from the US. “We did job rotations, short-term assignments in different countries and practised reverse mentoring,” Pendyala said.AMD is also sourcing talent and know-how in technologies from institutes in the US such as MIT and the University of Texas, Austin, apart from Indian institutes such as IITs and IIIT Hyderabad. In India, the Sunnyvale, California headquartered company has 18% women among its 1,300 employees, higher than its global average of 15%. More than 50% of its workforce is outside of the Americas. Only 300 of its employees in India are in the software segment.“We largely have hardware engineers, that is, people who work with silicon,” Pendyala said.  [...]

The SUV and tractor manufacturer is looking closely at incorporating new technologies, including artificial intelligence and robotics, across various functions.

GCC's VAT to create 5,000 finance, accounting jobs

About 5,000 finance and accounting jobs will be created within the Gulf region with the introduction of value added tax (VAT) early in 2018, according to an industry expert.Paul Drum, head of policy at CPA Australia and an expert in tax law, was speaking at a workshop at the University of Wollongong in Dubai ahead of the launch of VAT in the region on January 1, 2018.Drum said VAT has been implemented by more than 150 countries worldwide, adding that government revenues from taxation are generally used to pay for public services including public health services, publicly owned or funded schools, parks and transport infrastructure. He added that the UAE will apply a VAT rate of 5 percent on taxable supplies which is very low in comparison to the average tax rate of 19 percent globally. The consumer will be taxed on goods such as electronics, smartphones, cars, jewellery, certain beverages, financial and accounting services, legal services dining out and entertainment. However, certain services and goods, such as nearly 100 food items, including basic health services, transport and public education will be exempted from the VAT.Drum said although the VAT registration process has only just commenced online, there is a shrinking window in which to prepare for it by reviewing and changing financial management processes, implementing new technology and appointing tax advisors if required. He added that consumers can expect a spike in sales of certain items prior to the official implementation of the VAT, which in turn could lead to a drop in sales in the same sectors in 2018.“The combination of the new excise taxes and the GST will have a moderate impact on inflation,” he said, adding that the launch of VAT brings good news to current finance and accounting students and graduates as it will create "ample employment opportunities".[...]
