I know, I know...*WAAAAVES* Hi guys! I know it's been a while since I last posted. I thiiiink most of you guys know, but I work full time (extra full time?) in a non-fashion position, and things have been CRAY. My job hasn't left all that much time for working on this old blog of mine, but I've resolved to kick things back into gear!So much has happened since my last post--I got to go to Nashville for CMA Fest (already making plans to go back next year!), the blogger lookbook I shot with Simply Be came out, I chopped off my hair, posted a bunch of looks for People Stylewatch, AND flew to New York to hang out with Eloquii on a super secret project--details of which I'm SO excited to share with you guys!! (But you can check out a sneak peek here!)In the meantime, I wanted to share a look I shot a few weeks back. Just looking at the photos makes me miss my hair! I typically opt for narrower stripes on my clothes, but the wider, bold stripe pattern on this dress just feels right! I love it as a contrast to the flowery floral bag and statement necklace in muted pastels. I'm bummed out that the dress is sold out online, but you may have some luck in-store! I just picked it up last weekend--such a steal at $16!

Speaking of good deals, you'll never guess where I found these perfect, lavender, snake-embossed pumps. Wait for it...TJ Maxx!!! Shopping at the Maxx takes a lot of patience but the payoff can be amazinggg. I've also scored some amazing home decor deals, and they even carry some plus size clothing options! Takes some digging but the find is usually worth it!

The necklace and bracelet are from ShinyMix, a jewelry retailer specializing in all things sparkly and, of course, shiny! I'm in love with their necklace selection; from the bold, colorful statement necklaces to the delicate wisps of gold chain carrying tiny pendants, ShinyMix has just the thing you need to update your jewelry box. They were sweet enough to offer Curvy Girl Chic readers with a discount code for 15% off--just use code "CurvyGirl" at checkout. To add to the sweet deal, they always offer free shipping to US customers! :)

Where are your favorite places to score a deal? Are any of the places I mentioned above among your favorites? :)

Because when you're putting together an outfit, why not wear all your favorites at once?Snapped this outfit a few weeks back, prior to this insane heat wave! You wouldn't catch me in anything like leather or faux leather in this 100 degree heat! Still, I can't wait for it to cool down so I can bust these pieces out again. Moto jackets, stripes, and sparkle just make life feel right.I'm a little bit in love with this bag too--it's convertible to a crossbody with a shiny gold chain! Polymer clay soles with stiletto heels

The latest video shows how to make soles using patterns with polymer clay. It is actually one of the easiest ways of making soles I have figured out so far, if you don't count the trouble of making the card stock supports. Then again, you can reuse those and make more than one pair of soles before using them for shoe soles as well.

allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="253" src="//" width="450">
Here are the finished shoes, which are also shown at the end of the video.

Perfect weather calls for pretty fabrics and girly accents! Nothing screams California-girl like a great pair of denim shorts, but I'm not always a huge fan of super distressed, chock-full-of-holes styles. They look great on some people, but they aren't really for me. These lace-trimmed shorts strike the perfect balance between casual and girly!

In other fun news, I'm off to London in less than a week! I'll be working on a fun project with Simply Be and hanging out for a few days after! It's my first time back in more than a decade, so if you have recommendations for what to do, where to go, and most importantly, where to shop, let me know!! :D

Foot lasts

I have shown how to make foot lasts for dolls by casting their feet using latex molds, but this is the real deal. These are real-life foot lasts for making shoes. They are made of wood, which is the usual material for foot lasts. I assume these are very old and they were among the old items the previous owner left at the house my brother and his wife currently own.

Plaster casting continued

I used the molds for plaster casting and also experimented on using a latex mold to make polymer clay heels. I had never done that before, but thought it was worth trying.

Little did I know that they offer just as many non-shoe fashion options--we're talking pieces from cool-girl brands like Nanette Lepore, Rebecca Minkoff, and perrenial favorite Rachel Pally! They have a fair amount of plus size options, from favorites like Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, as well as some cool pieces from a new favorite of mine, Vince Camuto.I opted for graphic, animal print shorts in a comfy woven fabric and paired them with this Calvin Klein shirt, which I'm in LOVE with. It's breezy and casual, and the gold details are just the thing to keep it from being too simple. Part 2 of mold making

Here is the second part of my experiments with MoldMaker.

Making a mold for heels using MoldMaker

The following video shows my attempt on making heels using a mold made of mold making clay and also an experiment on making a two-part mold with the clay.

By the way, the word "mould" or "mold" is really bugging me, because of the two ways of writing it. I have decided to stick with "mold" from now on as that is what I am using in the book and because the clay is called MoldMaker.

Daylight savings means that it's still light out when I get out of work (YESSS) and the occasional weekend heat wave allows for poolside hangouts and outdoor grilling! To me, nothing screams warm weather like a breezy, boho maxi dress. Heels for Miss Piggy's boots

I finished the boots I was making for Miss Piggy. They were only missing the heels and the video below shows how I made them. It's a long one, because I didn't do the usual cuts for when I made the same steps for the other shoe.

I've departed from my usual above-the-knee skirts recently in favor of midi lengths. Fixing the problem in the metal shoes

I have uploaded the second part about making the metal shoes. I figured out a way to fix things in a satisfactory manner, but although the video is really long, there is still more to do later.

Happy Monday! (Actually, WHAT IS SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS MONDAY, IT'S A MONDAY FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.)This weekend wasn't nearly long enough, but it was pretty perfect. When everything goes wrong

The next video is now in YouTube and this time things didn't go as planned, because I was using new material. The first experiment with it was a tunic for a Monster High Create A Monster doll, but I wanted to try it also for shoes.

This video is a more realistic view on how the doll shoe projects often go. The tutorials before this one are about subjects I know really well, so things can look easy. Trying new things is always different.

allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="253" src="//" width="450">

Here is a photo of the shoes as they are now. I have a plan for the ankle straps and will make a video about that soon.

Making boots using the pattern, part 2

Gluing the uppers to the soles took longer than I expected, so the video got really long and I had to divide it into two parts. These videos show the process all the way to the point where only the heels are missing.

Book update

I just want to let you know that I am still writing the book. The current word count is about 12,500 and there are lots of photos already. I have been taking new photos to get better quality than in the ones I have used in the blog, but due to the uniqueness of some photos, I will be using some old ones as well.

The structure of the book is now set and shouldn't change much after this. Chapters 1–4 present some tools and materials, chapters 5–6 are about different casting methods and making foot lasts of your doll's feet, chapters 7–9 introduce different ways of making soles and heels for shoes, and chapters 10–13 describe making uppers for different kinds of shoes.

It is really great that I don't have to worry about the length of the book or the number of photos, because there won't be any printing involved. I'm including a lot of example photos of what can be done with different materials and photos that show a sequence of actions for certain processes.

Finally, here is one of the new photos I have taken. I don't remember, if I have ever shown these before. These shoes are made of copper sheet using super glue and they are among my earliest experiments in making doll shoes (around 1998, I think). The thin copper sheet I used bends really easily, so these are purely decorative and cannot be used on a doll.

Closet Cleanout and an Intro to Swapdom!

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have caught on that I recently moved into a new place (YAY!). What's not so awesome, is that during the move, I tragically lost about half of my closet space (life is hard, lol), so a thorough closet cleanout was necessary in a major way. While I was flipping through my clothes, I realized just HOW MUCH of my wardrobe never actually gets worn! I'll fall in love with something, buy it, and one or two wears later, it's banished to the corners of my closet to die in favor of something new.
I'm terrible, I know.

Given my terrible shopping habits, I'll often end up with clothing that isn't worn more than a couple times but is still cute, current, and in perfect condition. In the past, these items have just sort of sat around (sometimes for years) until I decide to wear them again, or ended up at Goodwill during a move or closet purge. I hate feeling like I've wasted money buying clothes I rarely wear, so when Swapdom reached out to me about their swapping site, I was intrigued!
All you have to do is sign up, make a public profile (check mine out here), and start listing items. When you come across something you want, just make a request, and Swapdom does the rest to arrange the perfect swap. All you have to pay for is shipping. Genius, right?!

I've got four pieces up right now, including this lace dress from Kiyonna (I love it but it's a little too long for me!) and this crocheted tunic. Hopefully someone can give these pieces a good home! :)

What do you guys think? Is Swapdom a service you can get behind?

*This post was sponsored by Swapdom but all opinions are my own! So yes, I do really love this concept and can't wait to start swapping!

ELOQUII is BACK (and better than ever!)

The plus size blogosphere is abuzz with the news that Eloquii has relaunched! If you're new to Eloquii, here's the short and sweet about the brand: Previously owned by The Limited, Eloquii, The Limited's plus size brand, was shut down due to corporate restructuring. Plus size shoppers everywhere were sad/angry/disappointed, and the original team behind Eloquii decided to take over and relaunch with cooler pieces than ever before! (I'm personally a fan of all the faux leather details!)The company is now employee-owned, which I think is awesome. The coolest part? They'll be releasing new products in limited quantities every few weeks, so there will always be something new and fresh to add to your wardrobe. That wasn't easy, considering that this was all the hardener left:And there wasn't much resin left in the bottle either. This photo shows the tiny air bubbles you may get in the mixed resin. Letting the mixture be for a minute after mixing helps getting rid of these. Here are the finished soles. The ones on the left are for Silkstone Barbies and the ones on the right for Pepper Parsons (a Pinkie Cooper doll). I was curious to see how good I had been at measuring the components. The resin and hardener came in 250 ml bottles. At the time the hardener ran out, there was some resin left. About 7 ml isn't much when you consider the total amount. [...]

Fashion Doll Shoes videos

I have decided to try making proper video tutorials in addition to blog posts. You will be able to find them on my YouTube channel, but I will also be posting them here. The first video is just an intro to let you see my face. If I sound a bit unnatural, it's simply because I was reading most of the stuff from a paper. The future videos should be more natural, i.e. contain much more pauses, problems with selecting the right words, getting sentences all muddled up, and other fun stuff like that. Anyway, here is that first video:

width="450" height="253" src="//" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

As a California girl with a never-ending itch to travel, I just about DIED when I saw this Kate Spade clutch a year ago at Nordstrom. I couldn't justify shelling out almost $400 for a clutch (albeit an amazing one), so I held onto it for a few moments before placing it back on the display with a tear in my eye. I must have circled back at least 3 times to longingly gaze upon its perfection but in the end, I had to let it go.Needless to say, when it popped up during one of Kate Spade's surprise sales for more than 50% off, I had to buy it! I added it to my cart and checked out with such an insane sense of urgency that my heart was racing. Have any of you experienced the adrenaline rush when you score something you've been coveting for ages?? New foot lasts

Going through the stuff inspired me to do something else as well. I decided to use the rest of the casting resin before it goes bad. The latex is also getting a bit thick, so it's better to use it as well. So, I'm making some more foot lasts. All this has been done before and posted in this blog, but here are some photos anyway. The first one shows Sybarite's feet with flower tape around the ankles and several layers of latex applied. The next one is Tonner's Jessica Rabbit (17" athletic body). First with flower tape covering the ankle joints... ...and then with latex applied. Here are the finished moulds for both. And here are the resin castings made with the moulds. You can see the flower tape clearly, but it is much neater than saran wrap. As you can see in this photo showing the earlier plaster castings of Sybarite's feet and the new resin castings.[...]

Happy New Year! I hope you've all had a great holiday season and are amped to make this year even better than the last! I was iffy about sharing my resolutions with the internets because, let's face it, accountability. lol! But one week in, and finally getting the nerve up to share, here goes a basic rundown...Learn French.Already on this! Planning a family trip to France this year so my goal is to be able to carry on basic conversation. And you know, ask where the bathroom is, order cheese and a baguette, and make a purchase. I've clearly got my priorities in order. I'm using the Duolingo iPhone/iPad app and I can't recommend it enough!Spend more time outside.Working in an office all day then coming home to work on my blog or catch up on How I Met Your Mother makes it way too easy to stay inside all day. Three easy ways I plan to get some more sunshine and fresh air in my life are 1) eat meals outside--pack a picnic and find a grassy spot to dine al fresco during the lunch hour, 2) get out of the gym--instead, go for hikes, hit the pool, and venture into "sports," lol and 3) take in all that So Cal has to offer--gorgeous mountains, soft sandy beaches, and all the pretty parks a girl could ask for. Being outside makes me happy, and I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to make myself happy this year!Wear sunscreen.A lifetime of sunbathing, beach bumming, and crappy sunscreen habits has left me with less than desirable skin, and I need to remedy this ASAP. Currently getting my Aveeno on daily--on top of being SPF50, my face smells like a Hawaiian vacation. Win.Be mindful of my food. It's easy to buy prepared, packaged food, like that triple-washed, already cut salad, but I want to do what I can to buy local, organic foods, support local businesses, and prepare meals at home. I've always enjoyed cooking (I wanted to own a restaurant when I was little!) but recently, it's fallen to the wayside. Gameplan: buy small quantities, buy often, and buy in season! Already signed up for a CSA share from Tanaka Farms. Super excited! To learn about CSA programs and find one near you, check out Local Harvest. :) Prioritize my happiness. It's too easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of never-ending to-do lists and impending deadlines. Maybe it's a selfish resolution, but you can't take your career with you when you depart this earth, so you might as well take a step back from the chaos, smell the proverbial flowers, and relax. “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” ― Ernest Hemingway[ :: tartan moto jacket c/o Wet Seal+ :: City Chic top :: Torrid skinny jeans :: ][ :: Bella Vita boots :: Forever 21 bag :: ]What are some of your resolutions this year? :D Any of you have the same resolutions as me? Making a master for a mould

I'm still making resin castings as 500 ml of resin is a lot for casting such small pieces. Finding out that latex moulds can be used with resin was really great, because I can make moulds for casting just one pair. You can't really use a special design, like the one for Monster High Nefera in the picture below, for a lot of shoes. As you can see, the parts used for the master are really simple, just wooden and plastic beads, a round wooden stick (for keeping the heel parts together) and card stock. The main things are that the master lasts long enough to make the mould and that there are no openings between the parts for latex to get into (two coats of sealer will take care of that). In the next picture, the master is attached to a base with clear mounting tape and two coats of sealer have been applied. This is for making the latex mould, which has been described in previous posts. Here you can see the finished mould and the pair of castings. The part of the mould between the heel and sole needed to be cut a bit to remove the castings and turn the mould. Those parts of the sole were so close to each other that too much latex collected there when making the mould. I also made a couple of pairs of soles for Miss Piggy. The masters for both designs were made of card stock (sole) and wood (heel). The Barbie wedge sole is included to show the scale. With such a long and thin sole, it was necessary to have some extra support during the casting process. I removed the heel from the master and used the curved sole under the latex mould to ensure that the mould would keep the correct shape.[...]

Replicas of MH Catty's boots

I got Monster High Catty Noir and seeing her boots got me thinking that I might be able to copy them. The boots consist of two halves, which should make it possible to make tubular latex moulds for them.I attached the parts to small pieces of cardboard covered with packing tape. I used clear mounting tape to attach the pieces from the toe parts and them applied a few coats of latex. I had to make moulds for all four parts, because the two halves of one boot were different and the corresponding parts for the other boot were mirror images of those. Here are two of the finished moulds. I was a bit worried that the holes wouldn't be big enough to get the pieces out of the moulds, but latex stretches quite a lot, so the moulds were usable. Here you can see the size of the holes. The biggest problem with them came when pouring resin into the moulds as it would easily spill outside the mould. Making the castings wasn't as straight forward as I had thought, because hanging the moulds vertically caused the moulds to deform as resin collected to the bottom. I had to fill the moulds half full first and place them almost horizontally so they would keep their form. Then when the resin had hardered a bit, I could pour in the rest and keep the moulds upright to keep the resin from spilling out. Here you can see the original pair and the resin castings. The castings aren't quite successful as the seam in front won't close properly, but the result is still better than I expected. I'll just need to figure out a way to fix the front. [...]

More resin casting

I have continued my experiments with latex moulds. I'm still having trouble with very small/thin parts, so when I decided to try Barbie-sized soles, I chose wedges. I had a cheap set of shoes for Steffi and picked a pair of those. In the photo, you can see an original shoe, one with straps removed, a resin casting, and the latex mould. Pouring resin into a mould this small is challenging, as is getting all air bubbles out, but it can be done.

Another part of my experiments is making foot lasts for all 1/6 scale dolls. In the photo below, the foot lasts from left to right belong to these dolls: Hollywood Royalty Lana Turner, Silkstone Barbie, Tiny Kitty Collier, Monster High Howleen, Bratzillaz, and Pinkie Cooper.

Using the high heel tubular mould

I thought the latex mould should be entirely dry already, so I made the first soles using it. My first idea for removing air bubbles from the heels worked just fine. I pressed the heel closed, poured in some resin, released the heel, and checked it. There was a small air bubble inside it, so I tilted the mould a bit and  squeezed the air out of the heel. Then I released the heel again and this time it was full of resin, so I filled the rest of the mould. The shape of the mould required building a support for it, so no resin would spill out. And here is the finished casting. It is better to be able to make these with latex moulds as I only made two soles to get one pair of shoes. I don't make that many shoes for Rini, for whom these are intended, so it would be too expensive to use silicone for a mould for these.[...]

Shoes that fit Pinkie Cooper dolls

I just got Pepper Parson of the Pinkie Cooper range and of course I had to check, if any of the existing shoes would fit her. Unfortunately, it looks like only boots will fit, because the doll's feet don't need to go all the way into them. Here is the doll wearing Barbie boots from 1970's. A closeup from the side shows that the boots aren't a perfect match, but they look like this on most other dolls as well. Another pair of boots that fit are these white cowboy boots I have originally bought for Blythe. However, the best fit comes from a Re-Ment set. These look very nice and just the right size. No other Barbie shoes than the brown boots fit the doll, but these Barbie leg warmers look quite nice on her. I might try making something of ballet shoe type to go with these.[...]

Fix for sticky silicone

On my first try of making silicone moulds, I got some problems with the hardener and parts of the mould remained sticky. This time, I tried to mix the hardener to the silicone more thoroughly, but still got some sticky parts. However, I found a fix for the problem. It occurred to me that as the hardener mixed in the silicone hardens it, hardener applied with a brush to the sticky surface should do the same. I tried it and it worked.

The uneven parts in the picture were the ones that remained sticky. They have a slightly different color, because the hardener is blue (to make it easier to see if it has been mixed in the silicone well enough).

Update on the book:

I have written most of the chapters about mould making and casting, plus quite a lot about materials. I currently have about 9,000 words written, plus 70 photos. There will be quite a lot of photos in the book, because it is so much easier to show things in pictures. It should also be easier for people with less than perfect command of English. The current plan is to have the book available only in English, although a Finnish version is also possible later, if I feel like translating the book and have time to do it.

The main change to the original plan is that I won't include any example projects. The book will be long enough with the other material. I'm thinking about a possibility of making another book later about example projects. First I need to get this one finished and see how much interest there is.

You guys. This Sunday will be the first. day. of. fall. Tubular mould for a high heel sole

Latex is so much cheaper than silicone that I'm now trying to make all possible moulds using latex. Looking at a master for a high heel sole, I got an idea I just had to try. I thought that it would be possible to make a tubular mould using latex by placing the opening under the toe part and attaching the master to a support only from that place. The picture below explains this better than any words. I used a square piece of mounting tape to attach the master to the cardboard structure. Then I applied several layers of latex, letting it dry before applying the next layer. Here you can see the size of the opening. It is fairly large, because the entire master needs to fit through it. This is the trickiest part of removing the mould. You need to roll the mould over the highest part of the master, because too much stretching could tear the latex at this stage. Here is the mould turned right side out. I'm going to let it set for a few days before casting, because removing the castings will require a lot of stretching and I want to be sure the mould can take it. It'll be interesting to see how this will work. I got the master out of the mould, so removing the castings should not be a problem. Getting air bubbles out of the heel could be a challenge, but I already have a theory on how to do that. We'll see how it works once I get to use the mould.[...]

Casting resin: Feet with ankle joints

When I was ordering resin, I didn't realize that the bottles I got for my first try were 100 ml and the ones I ordered now were 250 ml. That's 0.5 liters of resin and it's a lot when making as small castings as doll shoe soles. So, I decided to make several castings of doll feet now that I found out I can use latex moulds. I've only got 500 g of silicone and that doesn't make many moulds, because you need so much of it around the master. 300 ml of latex, on the other hand, is enough for a bunch of moulds.I wanted to find a better way of making castings of feet with ankle joints. The first time I tried it, I used saran wrap to protect the ankles and the resulting castings weren't very pretty, even though they were perfectly usable. This time I was wondering if flower tape would do the job. It's stretchy and slightly adhesive, but not so much that it would leave glue stains to the doll's feet. Monster High Deuce got to be the guinea pig for this experiment. I wrapped flower tape tightly around his ankles and then applied a few layers of latex. The moulds weren't too hard to remove, even though flower tape has matte surface. You just need to make sure there are no open seams for the latex to go into and everything should work fine. Below are the finished moulds with some supports and ready for casting. This is what the castings look like. Much neater than when using saran wrap. These are for making shoes with low heels, so that's the reason for the angle of the ankle.[...]

Comparison: Howleen and Tiny Kitty

As I was making resin castings of Monster High Howleen's feet, I started to think that they looked remarkably like Tiny Kitty's feet. So of course I had to check. The first photo shows Howleen on the left and Tiny Kitty on the right. The arches of their feet seemed very similar.

Here are the feet shown with a sole I have made for Tiny Kitty. As you can see, the arch fits Howleen very well and even the length of the feet is the same.

The problem arises when you look at the toes. Howleen's foot is much wider, so shoes made for Tiny Kitty won't fit her. However, I am wondering whether it would be a good idea to make shoes using Howleen's feet, so they would fit both dolls. Some shoes could be too loose for Tiny Kitty, but some models might work. I guess I'll just have to try and see.

UNEXPECTED HUES: 9 Awesome Leather Pieces I'm Coveting for Fall

Hey guys! I'm back from a whirlwind trip in NYC, and while the runways are being walked by models in S/S 2014 gear, I'm itching to share some of my favorite pieces for fall! This summer feels like it has lasted a lifetime. I'm so ready for it to cool down so I can bust out my coats, jeans, sweaters and boots!

Every fall, I find myself obsessing over all things leather, and this year is no different! While black and brown pieces are always classic, this year, I'm gravitating toward more unexpected colors--burgundy, various shades of blue, and dark, smoky greens. Click through the slideshow below for a few of my favorite leather pieces in unconventional shades!

frameborder="0" height="635px" scrolling="no" src="" width="570px">
I can't get enough! The leather t-shirt and navy skater skirt are my absolute must haves. What about you? Is colored leather striking your fancy for fall? :)

Resin casting with latex moulds

As I was reading the instructions of the casting materials I bought, it started to look like latex moulds could be used for resin casting. Of course I had to try it. For the experiment, I chose making castings of the Hollywood Royalty Lana Turner's feet. Plaster castings of that size are not very durable, so I thought it would be great to have them made of resin. The earlier blog post about making foot lasts can be found here. This time I was using latex meant for making tubular moulds, so it worked a lot better. When I made the latex moulds, I made small tabs on the back, so it would be easy to hang the moulds from the clips in my magnifying glass. Hanging them helps to keep the correct form while the resin hardens.I treated the insides of the moulds with form releasing wax to protect the latex and to help remove the castings. I'm happy to say that the casting was successful and I now have resin foot lasts for Lana. There was an air bubble in her left big toe, so that's a small flaw, but it does not affect the usability of the lasts.I also made some resin shoe soles using latex moulds. Unfortunately, the latex seems to deteriorate very quickly when used for resin casting. It can be used, but I didn't manage to make very many castings with one mould before holes started to appear. That could be due to not having just the right kind of form releasing agent. There are so many different varieties that it is hard to know, which one should be used. I used what I happened to have and it was the wax I bought for making and using silicone moulds.I'm currently writing the chapters about mould making, casting, and doll feet, so this was part of the experiments I'm doing to figure out what needs to be included in the instructions. Doing it all as I'm writing also helps to remember things that have gone wrong and to find out new things that can go wrong, so I can include tips for avoiding those.[...]

Sandals for Tiny Kitty

Going through the resin soles I made on my first attempt at casting resin, I noticed some for Tiny Kitty and decided to make shoes using them. I started by making the insoles using card stock and leather. That way, I could continue with the uppers while waiting for the paint to dry.I attached the resin soles to a support using double-sided mounting tape, so I could paint all sides except the top at once. I was using enamel paints and with them, the result is better, if you can paint all at once. I use mounting tape, because it is so thick that the sole does not touch the support. Here are the soles after first coat of paint.I wanted to use leather for the straps, but it is too thick to turn under the insoles when making shoes as small as these. So I cut the straps without any extra and made notches on the sides of the insoles for the ends of the straps. Then I glued small strips of fabric at the ends of the straps. And glued the straps into the notches, turning the fabric strips under the insoles. You could do this without the fabric, but the glued surface would be very small and I wouldn't trust it to hold. So the fabric is just for extra security.I don't have pictures of the rest of the steps, but they are very simple. Just attach the straps for the toe parts the same way, glue the insoles in place and close the straps by attaching a bead to one side and making a hole to the other. You can see it below in the photos of the finished shoes.I was planning to use some decorations on the straps, but I thought these looked so good like this that I discarded that plan. I can make another pair for that experiment.[...]

Book about doll shoe making techniques

I have been planning on collecting together and organizing information on tools, materials and techniques for making doll shoes. Much of the information is already in this blog, but it is here and there and may not be easy to find. That is why I'm planning on writing a book about the subject.

To keep the costs down, I am planning on making it an ebook, specifically a Kindle book available through Amazon. This way, I do not need to limit the number of pages and can be as elaborate as I think is necessary.

Considering my track record of unfinished projects, I cannot make any promises about if and when the book will be ready, but I have started planning the structure of the book and what information to include. This is where you, the readers of my blog, enter the picture. If there is a specific subject you would like to see included or any other requests, leave a comment to this blog post or tweet it to @kenkafriikki.

The preliminary plan for the structure is to have four main parts: Tools, Materials, Techniques for different parts of shoes, and example projects showing how to make shoes from start to finish (also different scales and different skill levels from very easy to ones using advanced techniques). This may change once I start writing the book and see how the structure works.

Update: I checked the sales of my previous book and as it seems not to be selling anymore, I lowered the price. You can find it here. It is not exactly cheap even at the new price, but an even lower price would mean all profits going to Blurb. Actually, the printing cost is the main reason of choosing the ebook format for the next book.

Wedges for Sybarite

I realized I haven't used many of the cast resin soles I made for Sybarite a few years ago. I found interesting plastic material I wanted to use, so I decided to use a pair of cast resin wedge soles with that. I started by painting the soles black using enamel paint (solvent-based). The extra sole in front is there to show how the soles look straight out of the mould. The plastic for the uppers looks like this. It was rectangular originally, but I had already cut the required pieces out at this point. These were available in various colors at 2 € per 10 x 12 cm piece. I got this and another piece in silver. Here are the pieces for the shoes before trimming the edges. And a closeup showing the structure of the material better.Plus another closeup showing the back. The insole is just one layer of card stock and a piece of leather. There was no reason to use more layers of card stock as the arch in the soles is exactly the same as in Sybarite's foot, so the foot provided the desired form during assembly. After trimming the edges of the plastic pieces, I attached them using sewing thread. Here are the straps with sewing thread attached. And here they are in place. As you can see, they stay straight at this stage because of the way the sewing threads are attached, but gluing the ends to the sides of the soles will correct that. The ankle part is closed with a strap made of leather.I attached a small piece of bent wire at the end of the strap and that goes through a hole on the opposite side as shown in the photo. It is the same method I used for Monster High shoes with cork soles and it works surprisingly well despite being so simple. You just need to apply a lot of glue on the inside of the strap where the end of the wire is to make sure the wire will stay in place and won't scratch the doll's foot. All that is missing now are the wedge soles. The strap looked a bit out of place as it was, so I decided to glue some leftover pieces to it.Then[...]

Tiny Kitty's shoes

These shoes had been at this stage for a long time. In fact, so long that I didn't manage to find any of the earlier photos, even though I must have taken some. It doesn't really matter, because the stages up to this point are described in earlier posts about other shoes. I used a pair of wedge soles made by casting plaster in latex moulds. I glued some silver-colored fabric on the sides of the soles, glued pieces of leather as outer soles, and made the insoles using cardstock and the same fabric I used for the sides.Next I glued the insoles in place as the straps were so thick that they had to be glued to the sides, not under the insoles (that works in bigger shoes, but not in 1/6 scale). The straps are made of card-woven bands left over from some earlier project. I glued one side first and let it dry. Then I glued the other side and the pieces behind the heel that will hold the ankle straps. The way of closing the ankle straps is a bit different from the ones I've tried before. I attached a small bead and button on the vertical piece and used glue to secure the ends of the thread. The bead is there to make some room between the band and the button, so closing the strap will be easier. Then I glued the ankle straps in place. Making working buckles in this size isn't easy, so I used thin rubber bands. They will deteriorate in time, so I'm not too happy about using them, but they work very well in the short run. Here are the finished shoes from different angles. Dark ankle straps probably would look better, but I only had rubber bands in gold, silver, bronze and multi-color, so silver will have to do for now. Also the vertical pieces look clumsy. This is really why I rarely make shoes in this scale (only slightly bigger than Barbie shoes). It is so hard to make them look right.[...]

Shoes for Sybarite

I found some tiny stickers and wanted to use them for doll shoes. As I hadn't made anything for the Sybarite in a long time, I decided to use the resin soles I made some time ago.First step was painting them. I used two tiny plastic cups and attached the soles to them with double-sided mounting tape to be able to paint all sides at once (except the insoles). I used Revell Enamel Paint number 04 for these. Here is the sheet of stickers. You can't really see the scale, but the photos further below will make that clear. For the uppers, I decided to use clear plastic. Below you can see the type of plastic I'm using for the doll shoes. It is soft and doesn't show any creases even after doing this: The insoles have two layers of cardboard and one layer of leather, and I painted the edges. The following photos show the order of attaching the stickers. I even decided to put some on the insoles where they would remain visible. After attaching all stickers, it was time to apply sealer. Again I attached the soles to the plastic cups to get even layer of sealer on all sides. The uppers are very simple as there is no point doing anything very elaborate when using clear plastic alone (without any stickers). I cut the pieces from the plastic and used the lines in the pattern to attach pieces of double-sided adhesive tape to the parts that go under the insole. After making holes to the flaps, I attached the uppers. For more information on why I made the holes, see an earlier blog post. Then I just needed to glue the insoles in place. Here are the finished shoes from several angles. [...]

Fashion Doll Shoes in ipernity

I created a new group in ipernity. Obviously, it's called Fashion Doll Shoes. It is an open group for all photos of high heel fashion doll shoes, so if you're in ipernity and take photos of your dolls' shoes, you're welcome to add them to the group. The only limitations at the moment are that the shoes need to have high heels and the photos must be of the shoes, not entire dolls. Hopefully, there will be no need of any additional limitations.

Miscellaneous stuff

I haven't done anything new for a while, but there are some things from last year that I haven't posted yet. First pair is Monster High wedges made of Cernit/Fimo and some lace. The method of making the soles is the one explained in this blog post. These are very simple shoes with just the wedge soles, insoles made of cardboard and leather, and some lace.I made these shoes specifically for the Grayscale Frankie and you can see her wearing them in the story The Not So Grim Reaper. The next two are variations of the Leopard print shoes for Monster High dolls. The last Monster High pair is made of what was left of the card-woven band I used for Nefera's shoes. Finally, there's the first pair I've ever made for a Novi Stars doll, in this case, Una Verse. I made these to go together with a dress I crocheted for the doll using the same sewing threads as in the card-woven bands. Otherwise, they're just leather, cardboard, and pieces of wood for heels.[...]

An old pair from 2007

I made these shoes for Madame Alexander's Cissy in 2007. These are among the first experiments I made with plaster casting soles.I covered the soles with fabric. Then I glued on some plastic decorations. The fabric had to be used partly to keep the plaster from chipping, partly because parts of the soles will always show between the decorations, no matter how carefully you place them. Finally, I glued on the insoles and straps and covered the sides with sealer. The shoes have been stored in a box with other pairs for several years now and the other day, when I took them out, I noticed this:The sealer looks really bad. This is the only pair where this has happened. All the other ones, even the oldest, look fine, so I have no idea why it happened with these shoes. Could be a reaction between PVA glue and sealer. The original Finnish blog post is here.[...]

Ah well, I'll settle for exploring castles and pretty towns in Germany! ;)[ :: embellished dress c/o Scarlett & Jo (available here!) :: Majid straw tote via ideeli (similar here) :: ][ :: Merona sandals (available here) :: filigree cuff via street vendor :: ]Cover anything with sparkles and I will love it. This dress is no exception! I love the bright cobalt blue, but the real statement maker is the super embellished neckline! It instantly dresses up an otherwise simply cut dress, and I've gotten to wear this for a variety of occasions, from picnicking outside to a concert in Vienna. The best part? It also comes in my favorite color--purple!!What are those of you celebrating up to today? Hopefully something that involves lots of sunshine, friends, family, and good food! :) xoxo! Hey guys! :D Checking in from Germany to share another look from MYNT! Of the three MYNT pieces I've worn, this one is my favorite! I love the contrasting body/sleeve combo, and there are so many chic details; I adore the contrast exposed zippers, buckles at the waist, and I love the leather epaulettes![ :: MYNT1792 Harlem moto c/o :: H&M dress (similar) :: Alexander Wang Rocco (several color options here!) :: ][ :: Prabal Gurung x Target heels (similar) :: F21 bangles :: ]One of my favorite ways to wear feminine, wispy pieces is pairing them with tough, moto-inspired items to keep them from being overly saccharine. I absolutely love the way the jacket anchors this silky dress to make it wearable for day--without it, it looks a bit like a nightgown! :P[ :: MYNT1792 Harlom moto c/o :: H&M dress (similar) :: Alexander Wang Rocco (several color options here!) :: ][ :: Prabal Gurung x Target heels (similar) :: F21 bangles :: ]Thanks for reading!! :D xoxo FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | BLOGLOVIN [...]

Happy Monday! :) So excited to share these photos with you![ :: MYNT1792 Chelsea jacket c/o :: H&M+ pants (similar) :: Forever 21 crop top (similar) :: ][ :: Report heels :: Monika Chiang Raja clutch :: ]Currently in Vienna (Austria...home of Arnold Schwarzenegger! teehee), but wanted to share these looks since I'll be one of MYNT 1792's Insiders! You can check out my profile on their page here! :) They're quickly becoming one of my favorite plus size brands for outerwear--the construction, fit, and quality are always on point!I love how this tailored jacket pulls together these slouchy pants, which up until now, I hadn't worn out due to their pajama-y-ness. Love the way these pieces work together though! Wore a crop top because why not, and layered on bracelets to dress things up a bit. Also, currently obsessed with these white heels. Be prepared to see these on my blog a lot! :Pxoxo!! I hope you a lovely week! :D Follow me on Instagram for photo updates from Europe! :) FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | BLOGLOVIN [...]

Happy Friday everyone!Currently in Budapest, so I thought I'd share some photos I snapped a couple weeks ago! ;)[ :: Monif C. Malibu Swimsuit c/o :: ]Monif C. is consistently making my swimsuit dreams into a reality. I can't gush enough about how much I love this suit. It just brings me SO. MUCH. HAPPINESS. The vibrant blue print, the fact that it's designed to look like a wetsuit (!!!), and the perfect fit basically have me obsessed.I took this suit for a spin at the beach a couple weekends ago, hoping that the industrial strength zipper would stay put, and that the extra coverage would help me stay warm (and unburned!) while boogie boarding in the chilly Pacific waters! Needless to say, mission accomplished! No wardrobe malfunctions, and I managed to maintain feeling in all my extremities while in the water. Perfect. This photo says it all! This suit makes me happyyyyyy. ^___^Industrial strength zipper!xoxo! To keep up with what I'm doing in Europe, follow me on Instagram here! :) FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | BLOGLOVIN [...]

Last outfit post from Hawaii! Wearing more tie dye from Thread & Butter. :)[ :: Thread & Butter Noah tank c/o :: Asos skirt :: Marni for H&M necklace :: Target sandals :: Grafea backpack :: ]Tie dye on tie dye! I love the swingy shape that happened from pairing these two pieces. This top has quickly become a weekend staple since I came back home--it's super soft and the bright color is so right for these hot days we've been having!I never got a lei while we were in Hawaii, so I improvised with this oversized flower necklace from the Marni for H&M collab several seasons ago. I love the clunkiness of it! Finished off the look with these sandals which have pretty much been worn to death since I bought them--I plan on getting them in several more colors! At $15 each, they're the perfect beach/pool sandal![ :: Thread & Butter Noah tank c/o :: Asos skirt :: Marni for H&M necklace :: Target sandals :: Grafea backpack :: ]Jetting from one trip to another--leaving for Europe tomorrow! I can't believe I'll be gone for three weeks. I haven't even started packing yet!!! Halp. O_o FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | BLOGLOVIN [...]

Some days, particularly ones where all you plan on doing is picnicking on the beach, less is definitely more. All I needed was a comfy summer dress, flats to walk to the Japanese takeout shop in, and a bag big enough to hold a beach towel and the essentials.[ :: Torrid cami dress :: NaRaYa bag from Thailand (similar/similar) :: Torrid aztec print flats :: ]One of my favorite purchases from Thailand--I use this bag every time I travel. It's perfect as a carry-on! :)[ :: Torrid cami dress :: bangkok bag from Thailand (similar/similar) :: Torrid aztec print flats :: ]Totally didn't notice until now that everything I'm wearing has diamond shapes on it. Aztec print on the flats, studding on the dress, and quilting on the bag! Completely unintentional. lol!Happy Thursday! xoxo :) FACEBOOK | TWITTER | INSTAGRAM | BLOGLOVIN [...]
