This Week On Metro Connection: Fears

Fri, 03 Feb 2012 09:13:06 -0500

We all have things we're afraid of - and ways of responding to our particular fears. This week, we meet Washingtonians grappling with fears small and large - from anxiety over dancing in public to worries about losing a home. We'll also ask whether one community's fears of crime are overblown, and meet a woman who's coped with her fear of confined spaces by spending time in confined spaces... underground.

[Music: "Every Little Bit Hurts" by John Davis from Title Tracks / "The Fear (Instrumental)" by Lily Allen from It's Not Me, It's You]

This Week On Metro Connection: Race And Ethnicity

Fri, 27 Jan 2012 13:17:52 -0500

We focus this week on a topic we tend to tiptoe around — race and ethnicity. We'll explore how color, culture and our perceptions of each other are entwined with Washington's past, present, and future. We'll go back to the 1850s, when a group of former slaves and free African Americans founded their own school in the nation's capital. We'll examine why one particular minority group is disproportionately involved in pedestrian deaths in the suburbs. And we'll visit a bustling Latino neighborhood in Northern Virginia...and find out why its future is so uncertain.

This Week On Metro Connection: Suburbia

Sat, 21 Jan 2012 18:26:11 -0500

We dive in to the complex, ever-changing suburban communities of our region. We'll explore the military's role in shaping the 'burbs, and go inside the rapidly-growing Indian community in Loudoun County. Plus, the heated debate over sprawl in Maryland, and just how far you can get outside the city... and still be considered part of the Washington area?

This Week On Metro Connection: Out In The Cold

Fri, 13 Jan 2012 15:14:30 -0500

Old Man Winter tossed a few flakes our way this week, so even though winter hasn't quite arrived in the region, this week we're going "Out in the Cold." We meet NASA scientists working on a telescope chilled to nearly -400 degrees, and dive in to the debate over shelter for homeless women in D.C. Plus, we preview a world-premiere musical based on the classic children's book, The Snowy Day.

This Week On Metro Connection: Taking Stock

Fri, 06 Jan 2012 23:14:07 -0500

As we kick off 2012, we pause to reflect on the year ahead, and find out what Washingtonians want from the next 12 months. We also meet people who are re-evaluating their lives in a fundamental way — and making some big changes.

This Week On Metro Connection: Hall Of Fame

Fri, 30 Dec 2011 19:08:02 -0500

Today we look back on some of the remarkable people and stories we've been lucky enough to share on this show. We'll talk with the woman who sorts and sifts through decades of artifacts for the U.S. House of Representatives, and hear about an ambitious project at George Mason University to archive accents from all over the world. We'll also meet a man who works as a town crier... go inside a local barbershop that's designed to keep D.C. teens off the street.

This Week On Metro Connection: Culinary Classics

Fri, 23 Dec 2011 14:07:47 -0500

Today we revisit some of the stories we've done about the diverse and delicious gastronomic scene here in the nation's capital. We'll head to D-C's Capitol Hill neighborhood to sample what may be the world's most gourmet pop-tarts, and we'll visit the Korean Cultural Center to learn how to make the longtime staple kimchi. Plus, we'll ride along with some Chesapeake Bay watermen and take a tour down a rather mouth-watering memory lane of long-gone Washington restaurants.

This Week On Metro Connection: Traditions

Fri, 16 Dec 2011 22:07:53 -0500

We pay homage to traditions and rituals of all kinds this week. We'll visit a park sacred to Native Americans, and talk with a local woman who's hoping to give the park new prominence. We'll swing by a Prince George's County church that's taking the concept of a Christmas pageant to a whole new level. And we'll go inside a weekly event known as the "Captain's Coffee," and hear how it's bringing together houseboat residents on the D.C. waterfront.

This Week On Metro Connection: Health & Wellness

Fri, 09 Dec 2011 18:43:03 -0500

We follow doctor's orders this week and focus on health and wellness. We'll find out why a local medical school uses patients as instructors, and meet members of the D.C. Sled Sharks, a sled-hockey team for kids with disabilities. Plus, a local scientist explains how the racket of city life affects our feathered friends, and we meet a man who's trying to live life to the fullest — even as he loses his sight.
