If you're wondering why you're being charged so much for your motorcycle insurance, it may be due to factors that you're not aware of but which factor into insurance providers' calculations. One of these is your age. In general, younger motorcycle riders are charged higher rates because of the expectation that they are a higher insurance risk compared with more mature motorcycle owners. In addition, you will be levied higher rates if you are unmarried and male, again because of safety concerns.
Even the neighborhood in which you live and your occupation can be considerations used by providers in determining the size of your motorcycle insurance rates. For example, if you live in a high-risk area that has a high record for motorcycle thefts, then you will be charged a high rate. However, you can ameliorate this somewhat by installing anti-theft devices, such as tracking monitors, in your bike, as well as parking your bike in a secure place such as your garage or a protected parking lot. The distance between your home and your workplace, and the route you take to get there will also affect how much you will be charged.
But it is not just your personal profile that will be considered when computing your motorcycle insurance rates but also the type of bike you're driving. More powerful motorcycles, such as sports bikes, will be charged the most expensive rates because insurance providers anticipate that they will be used in a risky fashion, such as in street races. Even smaller motorcycles, which are generally the cheapest to insure, may be charged higher premiums if they have powerful engines. On the other hand, older models that are well maintained will be offered lower premiums. Bigger motorcycle models may also be charged lower premiums than sports bikes because they are considered safer to ride and users are less likely to use them in dangerous activities such as racing.

Motorcycle accidents, as any personal injury attorney will tell you, are usually deadlier than car accidents. Whereas a car can help shield a motorist from injuries, the only protection a motorcycle rider really only has a safety helmet - if he or she is in fact wearing one - to prevent serious injury. In my personal injury law practice in Seattle, Washington, I see my share of tragedy that comes as a result of riding the roads on two wheels instead of four. I would like to share some somber statistics on motorcycle accidents and caution bikers to be extra cautious when traveling. • The number of accidents increases regularly year-to-year in the U.S. • Motorcycle deaths are 30 times as great as for those who drive automobiles • Riders under 40 are 36 more times as likely to be in an accident fatality than other drivers who are the same age • Motorcycle riders over 40 are around 20 times more likely to be in an accident fatality than other drivers who are the same age • Motorcycle fatalities make up about 5 percent of all highway deaths, but motorcycles represent only 2 percent of all registered vehicles in the U.S. • Approximately 80 percent of motorcycle accidents result in personal injury or death. Car accidents? Only 20 percent. • Most motorcycle accidents are caused by the simple fact that other vehicles fail to see them • Weather is not a factor in 98% of motorcycle accidents • 92% of motorcycle users involved in accidents have no safety or riding training; instead they learned on their own or from friends. Motorcycle rider safety training has been shown to significantly reduce personal injury and wrongful death in traffic mishaps. • The typical motorcycle accident allows the operator only 2 seconds to take action to avoid a harmful collision • In 73% of all motorcycle accidents, the rider is not using any eye protection (safety goggles, for example) and diminished vision resulting from wind delays critical reaction time to danger • The use of a safety helmet did not cause any significant failure to hear traffic noises or create a limited field of vision that contributed to a motorcycle accident • Riders and passengers using helmets suffered significantly lower head and neck injuries. These statistics clearly show that motorcycle usage can be significantly more dangerous than driving a car. They also clearly show that taking the right safety steps, such as wearing a helmet, having eye protection and getting some professional motorcycle safety training, can help bikers travel much more safely.

First Impressions: Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch

Tue, 26 Nov 2013 09:17:00 +0000

First Impressions: Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and GalaxyGear smartwatch:We get our hands on the two newest Samsung Galaxy devices- the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.Samsung today launched the Galaxy Note 3 in India, the third iteration of the popular large-screened Android smartphone. The Note 3 will be launched in stores in India on September 25 for Rs. 49,900 along with the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch, which will cost Rs. 22,990. Till the actual launch date, Samsung will let interested users walk into select stores and try out the device.Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on both devices at the launch event itself and spent some time with both of them to form some initial impressions. Here they are:Samsung Galaxy Note 3Looks, DesignAll the criticism directed towards Samsung with respect to the use of plastic on its expensive flagship devices seems to have made a difference. Samsung executives made a point to repeat that design and build were very important for the Note 3. As a result, the Note 3 does actually feel and look much better that its previous iterations. The Note 3 has a textured leather back with stitching around the edges that’s reminiscent of a leatherbound notebook. The Note 3 is also very, very light for such a large device which came as a pleasant surprise. Overall, I still wouldn’t call the Note 3 a good looking phone (it still has this tacky looking glossy metallic rim around the entire body) but it’s good to see Samsung at least try to make something aesthetically pleasing.DisplayAs per tradition, the Note 3 comes with a Super AMOLED display that’s very vibrant, so much so that colours look unnatural, especially in the default interface which itself is packed with a colourful wallpaper and  icons. The vibrancy meant that under low lighting, the display looked brilliant but that may differ when the Note 3 is brought under regular lighting.UsabilityI played around with the Note 3 for a couple of minutes and predictably, didn’t run into any issues. The interface is smooth, the UI uncomplicated and the deep feature-set is hidden from the user until he/she wants to access it. There aren’t any great changes in the interface especially if you’ve used the Galaxy S4. Whether that’s a positive or a negative, is up to you. The S-Pen has also been given some extra functionality including the ability to directly save any webpage to a customized digital ‘scrapbook’, adding contacts by writing their info, searching through handwritten content created over the last 30 days among others. Unfortunately, while these were shown off during the presentation, I was unable to test out all of them on the Note 3.Image Galleryfor more click here...[...]

Apple’s ‘lost’ iWork features find their way back

Apple's 'lost' iWork features find their way back

(image)

Apple's iWork is slowly but surely getting back to its old form.
The company on Thursday updated its iWork suite with several features it took out of the latest launch. The biggest update is the addition of customized toolbars -- a feature power users enjoyed in previous versions but were sad to see go in the latest option.
Apple was hit with user complaints recentlyafter the company updated iWork without some of the features its long-time users had liked using. The company earlier this month posted a notice, saying that while some of the features in iWork '09 were taken out of its latest launch, it planned on bringing many of them back. Apple also suggested new features would be coming.
The latest updates are by no means breathtaking -- new Keynote transitions and Windows size and placement fixes can only go so far, after all -- but they're a step in the right direction for those who have been Apple's updates are available now in the Mac App Store.

Apple Said Developing Curved IPhone Screens, New Sensors Apple's iPhone 6 will have 4.9-inch display, says latest rumour

Fri, 22 Nov 2013 12:52:00 +0000

Apple Said Developing Curved IPhone Screens, New Sensors Apple's iPhone 6 will have 4.9-inch display, says latest rumourThe iPhone 6 will have a 4.9-inch display - significantly larger than the 4-inch display found on the current iPhone 5 series - according to a new report. The iPhone 5S is only a couple of months old, but that hasn't stopped iPhone 6 rumours from beginning to surface. However, let's first clarify that reports have long claimed Apple will release a big-screened iPhone. These stories have come from more-legitimate publications like The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, and sometimes they also come from websites such as Chinese blogs.C Technology is one such blog with a decent track record, and it has claimed most recently - based on an insider's tip - that Apple is testing an iPhone prototype with 4.9-inch display. Specifically, the report said the iPhone 5S could get a larger screen in 2014.That means the iPhone 6 - the presumed name for the successor to the iPhone 5S - will have a 4.9-inch display, if this rumour is true. The report also said the iPhone 5C would get a screen-size bump, though the site wasn't sure if it would have a 4.9-inch display.Either way, the point is: Apple is allegedly looking at bigger displays all around for the iPhone. Whether this insider's tip actually pans out is another story, but it's interesting to consider all the possibilities nonetheless.Apple Inc. is developing new iPhone designs including bigger screens with curved glass and enhanced sensors that can detect different levels of pressure, said a person familiar with the plans. Two models planned for release in the second half of next year would feature larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges, said the person, declining to be identified because the details aren’t public. Sensors that can distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen may be incorporated into subsequent models, the person said.A man walks past an Apple Inc. store at dawn in the Ginza district of Tokyo. Nokia employees in China protest Microsoft deal

Thu, 21 Nov 2013 07:42:00 +0000

Nokia employees in China protest Microsoft dealHundreds of workers massed outside a Nokia factory in China to protest against unfair treatment following the sale to Microsoft.DONGGUAN, CHINA: Hundreds of workers massed outside a Nokia factory in southern China on Wednesday to protest against what they called unfair treatment following the sale of the company’s mobile phones business to Microsoft.Lack of trust in employers has often led Chinese workers to balk at takeovers they fear will worsen employment conditions, and the confrontation in the industrial city of Dongguan marked the latest incident in a wave of industrial unrest at Chinese affiliates of foreign manufacturing firms.Workers outside the factory gates said they were battling to change new contracts offering them worse employment terms that they said they had been forced to sign after the September deal between the US software giant and the Finnish handset maker.“We will definitely continue to fight until we get what’s fair,” said Zhang, a young male worker who gave only his surname.Riot police beat up four workers on Wednesday morning and took them away, several witnesses told Reuters. But in emailed comments to Reuters, Nokia said interaction between protesters and police had been “restrained (and) peaceful,” adding it was continuing to talk to the protesters.About 30 police officers kept watch as workers clad in white Nokia uniforms held up banners with the slogans “Legally protect our rights” and “Demand fair compensation.”“Our manufacturing operations in Dongguan continue,” it said. “To accommodate the temporary situation, we have also adjusted our operations in other manufacturing facilities.”Six protesters interviewed by Reuters said they had not heard from management.“They won’t do anything until things reach a critical stage,” said another worker who gave only his surname, Yang, and said he had worked at the factory for two years.DenialsThe precise nature of the employees’ grievances was not immediately clear, but an industry source with direct knowledge of the protest said Nokia had balked at what it saw as a demand for severance packages to workers who would retain their jobs under Microsoft. The source, who declined to be named, said he did not expect lay-offs at the 5,000-worker plant as a result of the deal with Microsoft, and denied claims from factory workers interviewed by Reuters that the Microsoft deal affected the pay of thousands of employees.Nokia, which declined to elaborate on its statement, agreed in September to sell its devices and services business and license its patents to Microsoft after failing to recover from a late start in smartphones. The sale is due to close in the first quarter of next year.In July, workers at a joint venture of US-based Cooper Tire & Rubber Co and state-owned tyremaker Chengshan Group went on strike after Cooper agreed to be bought by an Indian firm.Protesters said they doubted the ability of Indian tyremaker Apollo Tyres to bail out Cooper’s debts, and Chengshan eventually asked to dissolve the partnership. In June, an American factory boss was held hostage in a Beijing plant for days by dozens of employees demanding severance packages.[...]

There is no word on how much the handset will cost in India, nor is there any mention of a confirmed release date for the smartphone.Huawei launched its first Windows Phone, the Ascend W1, back in May. The biggest difference, apart from the bump up in the processor clock speed, is the lack of expandable memory, with the W1 offering 1.7GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. Despite the growing number of Windows Phone models in its stable, it may be difficult for Huawei to break into Nokia’s tight hold on that market. Earlier reports had shown that the Finnish company, back in July,controlled 85 percent of the Windows Phone market. The closest competition, HTC, accounted for a relatively less 11.5 percent.[...]

The everything phone for (almost) everyonePosted by :admin On : November 10, 20130Category:TECH NEWSTags:Galaxy, s4, samsungThe everything phone for (almost) everyone The Samsung Galaxy S4 has Android 4.2.2, a fantastic camera, a powerful quad-core processor, and software solutions for just about every scenario — including working as a TV/DVR remote. It’s also comfortable in hand and has NFC, a user-replaceable battery, and a microSD storage slot. The bad: Its screen is dimmer than competitors’, its plastic design gives it a cheaper look than its rivals, and we found the Galaxy S4′s power button turned on at undesirable times. Not all camera modes work as promised, and a long list of software features can quickly overwhelm and confuse. The bottom line: Its laundry list of features require time and effort to truly master, but the Galaxy S4 is the top choice for anyone looking for a big-screen, do-everything smartphone. With the Galaxy S4, Samsung clinches its goal of global smartphone domination. The supercharged Android 4.2 Jelly Bean device may look like a toy compared with the stunning HTC One and the dapperiPhone 5. But taken together, its blazing quad-core processor, colorful 5-inch HD screen, sharp-shooting 13-megapixel camera, and mile-high stack of software extras make the Galaxy S4 the most powerful superphone anywhere in the world. What does the Galaxy S4 have? A better question is: what doesn’t it have? There’s the 1080p screen, zippy processing speeds that areideal for gaming, and an IR blaster that can control your TV. Then there’s the parade of camera tricks that cram action shots into one scene, use both front and back cameras, and film a video in slow-mo. The GS4 can harness your eyeballs to pause video, and it can answer a phone call with the wave of your hand. Unlike the HTC One and the iPhone 5, it also piles on expandable storage space and a removable battery. It’s true: most of the GS4′s featurettes aren’t essential — and some aren’t even very useful, like the camera’s Eraser mode, which I never got to work, a subpar optical reader, and a translation tool that just duplicates what Google Translate already does. While none stands out as a must-have, cannot-possibly-live-without extra, these features do add up to a compelling testament that the Galaxy S4 is more than a step ahead of the pack. So, if you want a lovingly crafted statement phone that barely strays from Android’s core offering, then buy the HTC One, which also has double the internal storage for about the same price. But if you’re looking for a superphone that surpasses all other handsets on the features front, then you’ll find in this deserving all-around flagship a strong mix of extremely competent hardware and aspirational software with very few major drawbacks.Design and buildThroughout the lifetime of Samsung’s Galaxy S line, one of the biggest complaints levied against the manufacturer was — and is — how its plastic construction and flimsier-looking industrial design fall short compared with premium rivals from Apple and HTC.No, Samsung sticks by plastic, and points to only a handful of Android enthusiasts who really care about vaunted materials like aluminum and glass. Yet the phone maker has also made an effort to add more “refined” touches to the Galaxy S4.The Samsung Galaxy S4 is made of more modest material than the HTC One, left, and iPhone 5.Indeed, when you co[...]
