This is my second year participating with Team 1540 Flaming Chickens. Last year among the thousands of teams they made it to the World Finals. Team 1540 already has their design all designed in one week and sourcing parts...

Seriously Mother Nature

2017-01-17T08:53:19-08:00

I am not sure what is going on up here in Portland Oregon, but we have another weather impacted day that has shuttered schools. It used to be that we could expect a day of snow and it melted fast and a couple freezing rain events due to the Columbia Gorge, but that has not been the case the past two winters. We seem to have had storm after storm and this past week a storm dumped 14 inches of...

35 Years of Autodesk and AutoCAD Memories

2017-01-12T20:19:52-08:00

In response to my post about AutoCAD turning 35, my email inbox and twitter feed is full and I am so grateful for the response. It is so amazing to read about when you started using AutoCAD and the stories about Autodesk and also the photos. A little known fact is AutoCAD 1.0 wasn’t shipped to customers so the first release was actually AutoCAD version 1.1. Here is quote from a customer that started on the very first shipping AutoCAD...

Another Snow Day in Portland

2017-01-11T13:29:33-08:00

We typically do not get snow or big snowstorms here in Portland, but this year…SnowMG. This is the third big storm. I spent 4.5 hours on the freeway in a traffic jam due to an accident that then turned into snowed in vehicles becoming stuck in a parking lot from hell. We closed the Autodesk office today out of concern for the safety of our employees and also due to the weather and closed roads. At home the electricity and...

Generative Designed Elbo Chair One of 2016’s Most Innovative Objects

2017-01-10T11:17:27-08:00

Wired has just ranked the Autodesk Elbo Chair third on its list of “The Most Innovative Objects of 2016”. Last summer, my teammate Arthur Harsuvanakit and Autodesk intern Brittany Presten set out to use a chair as a design space for Project Dreamcatcher, working with the software to generate solutions that were feasible and sensible to fabricate using wood as the material and a CNC router for fabrication. This is what we do in the Office of the CTO “OCTO”.

New Year

2017-01-09T07:20:32-08:00

I'm back after just returning from my extended annual week of rest vacation. I spent my vacation snowshoeing a weekend in the snow up on Mount Hood then escaping away from the computer in sunny warm Mexico SCUBA diving with friends and seeing maker space\s and beaches. It was an amazing experience and a tradition to spend New Year Eve there I may do every year now. More details on the trip later as I need to go chip my...

Autodesk Week of Rest for the Holidays

2016-12-22T14:15:02-08:00

Most Autodesk employees will be out of the office for our annual Week of Rest so that our employees can spend time with their families for the holidays. The annual Week of Rest is from December 23rd to January 3rd this year. Some of us may take a take a day or two extra in the front and end to maximize our time with friends and family and come back fresh and energized to begin the new year. Employees for...

2016-12-22T11:51:19-08:00

In response to my post about AutoCAD turning 35, my email inbox and twitter feed is full and I am so grateful for the response. It is so amazing to hear the memories of so many including some that have used AutoCAD it’s entire life of 35 years. 35 Years of AutoCAD

2016-12-19T08:12:28-08:00

Next month AutoCAD will celebrate it’s 35th birthday. Just think about it, AutoCAD is hitting middle age. It is a pretty amazing milestone not only as a software product that has been used by millions of people around the world, but also that it is still quite popular 35 years later it was released. AutoCAD has been around longer than Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Windows. Autodesk and myself will have several special posts and events to celebrate the 35th birthday...

Portland’s Crazy Weather This Week

2016-12-16T14:07:48-08:00

The Autodesk Lake Oswego Oregon (Portland) office has been closed the past two days due to a rare snow storm named Decima that hit Wednesday December 14th, 2016. The snow total was 1-3 inches and to many that may not seem like much snow, but understand we don’t normally get snow so the the transportation system and drivers are not ready or prepared. With all the hills and winding roads and some of the snow melting and then freezing to...

BunnyBots is this Weekend in Portland Oregon

2016-12-14T08:50:22-08:00

Update 12/16/16: “We have had to reschedule BunnyBots from Saturday Dec 17th to Friday December 30th. There's just too much snow, ice and hazards especially for teams pulling trailers long distances. The 30th is our last backup day, though, if weather causes us to cancel the event on that day then we'll have to cancel BunnyBots for the year.” Come have fun and see some amazing high school kids who designed and built some robots at BunnyBots competing between the...
