Back in Hawaii for the 75th Anniversary December 7th Remembrance

I am in Hawaii to attend the 75th anniversary of December 7th. The event is not a celebration of the event or war, but to remember how bad war is and how we must never repeat this as well as honor all those that on that Sunday morning died or were forever affected. We had expected and hoped President Obama would be attending but it appears he may not be able to attend and cancelled his speaking events. I do...

A Rematch of AutoCAD Family Feud is In Order

At Autodesk University 2016 the AutoCAD Team’s Heidi Hewett held a AutoCAD Family Feud fun competition. The first contestants where Lynn Allen and myself each with a team of volunteers. Being the first teams to compete there were technical issues in the scoring but my team was clearly baking the points and were at one point 500 points ahead of the other team. After the lighting round it may have been close, but I don’t know. Some of the answers...

When Technology Goes Bad but So Good

I seen this image on Twitter yesterday and it made me laugh out loud so I thought I would share on this Friday. Most smartphones have a panoramic photo mode where the phone stiches photos together into one wide panoramic photo after you pan the camera. Well technology is not always perfect but in this case it was so perfectly weird that it was better than just a panoramic photos with a cat waking through. Seen on @YouHadOneJ0B As the...

Mr. Hurley's Neighborhood is Under Attack

I use the popular mobile app for Nextdoor to keep up to date on what is going on in my neighborhood. In my SW Portland neighborhood we put the Weird in Portland. This week after many coyote sightings and other reports, someone posted a funny sarcastic warning about “pygmy wolves”. There is never a dull moment or something not funny in Mr. Hurley’s Neighborhood. It's become clear to me that SW Portland is suffering from a major infestation of pigmy...

Revving Up for a Manufacturing Revolution With Hack Rod

Great article on Hack Rod by Drew Turney on Redshift. “Do you have a great idea for a new product but don’t have a fully equipped manufacturing plant to realize it? Thanks to a pair of California hot-rod enthusiasts, the whole manufacturing workflow—from conception to assembly—might someday be within your grasp.”

Autodesk University 2016 Photos

If you attended Autodesk University 2016, or even if you did not you can view some photos from the event and relive the event or see some highlights. If you attended and have your own photos you can add your own photos to the pool for free for others to see. It was so great seeing everyone that attended this year and I look forward to seeing you and many more next year at AU2017!

3D Printing Stainless Steel with Giant Robot Arms

YouTube star Tom Scott recently visited our Autodesk Pier 9 to meet with my colleagues Maurice Conti, Heather Kerrick, and Evan Atherton in the Applied Research Lab to discuss robots. Big robotic colleagues Bishop and Ash make cameos appearances. At Autodesk's Pier 9 workshop in San Francisco there are giant robot arms using welders to 3D print with stainless steel. Which seemed like a good place to talk about programming abstractions, high-level languages, training pendants, and just how safe...

Over a Quarter Million Served

There are now over 250,000 people in the Autodesk Feedback Community which is home to most pre-release beta testing for Autodesk products and technologies, Autodesk Labs, and some usability projects. I remember when I started at Autodesk in the Beta team in 1998, we had 3 beta projects of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and AutoCAD Mechanical and under 500 beta customers who were sent a physical CD ROM to test and then fax or email bug reports back to...

Autodesk University 2016 Recorded Keynote Presentations

Check out the recordings of these three great keynotes from this weeks Autodesk University 2016 and learn more about what Autodesk is thinking, doing, and what our customers are doing in the Future of Making Things. Prepare to be blown away by the speakers including a 16 year old young lady Anna Nixon from Beaverton Oregon who not only builds FIRST Robotics robots but has her own non profit to benefit girls learning STEM topics. Autodesk University Opening Keynote with...

Autodesk University 2016

The first official day of Autodesk University 2016 was yesterday and the day 2 is just starting. One thing I am realizing is that with organizing morning runs meeting at 5:30 am and then a full day of events and evening meetups and receptions there is little time for sleep or even blogging. I am mostly able to be on social media @shaanhurley and my Instagram from my smartphone. A few highlights in short bullet form. The Autodesk Fusion events...

Autodesk University 2016 Update – DAY 0

I hit the Las Vegas ground running yesterday for Autodesk University 2016 and another busy day today. The official first day of Autodesk University is tomorrow beginning with an early morning run, the big opening keynote, Exhibit Hall opening, AutoCAD Family Feud, The Blogger & Social Media Meetup, and so much more. Video Today developer and leadership events are going on. This evening is the newbie AU Orientation at 5:00 pm as well as several receptions like Welcome Reception, the...

Share and View Autodesk University 2016 Photos

Sharing photos of your Autodesk University experiences on social media is awesome but sometimes people can miss them or not know where to see many photos all in one location. Have no fear there is a place to upload and view photos from AU for free. Share your photos online using the free Flickr website or the Flickr app. You can post your photos to the AU 2016 Photo Group for everyone to see. I will also be posting...
