It's amazing how quickly technology advances are being made, not only in new products, but in ever-improving recent technological advances. Just when I finally purchased a DVD and thought I was once again on the cutting edge, I find that too will soon be replaced with even more advanced Blur-ray players and disc! I like the idea of the concert companion. Wouldn't this also be a great tool for use in the classroom! The Jawbone device is taking technology used by people with a hearing impairment and expanding it for general use on cell phones,which will make it easier for all of us to hear in crowded, noisy places. As for the Japanese Neorest toilet-that's an interesting concept! Will this put the European bidet in the American water closet?

I like these technology rules! The easier technology is to use, the more it will be used. They less maintenance and upkeep required, the better. The easier it is to access, the more it will be applied.

I especialy agree with this statement. "Technology that teachers employ in the classroom must be of exactly that variety: widespread and easy-to-operate. A learning simulation, a conferencing tool, and a student record keeper should be as untroublesome to use as a television, a telephone, and a notebook." I completely agree with this statement. I believe that many teachers resist integrating technology into their classroom because of the amount of time required to learn to use the technology, the lack of easy accesability, and lack of techinical support. If the rules in the artice are taken into consideration when school are purchasing new technology equipment, the more likely teachers and student will incooporate it into their teaching and learning. As technology becomes easier to use, and takes less time to learn, the more it will be accepted in the classroom.

I've heard a little about wireless internet, but don't know much about it. It is something I would like to explore more. I can see where it opens up another new era in the world of education. I found teacher's responses to wirelss internet in their classrooms very interesting. As always, some teachers are intimidated by such advances, while others view them as a challenge and enthusiastically endorse their use in their classrooms. This article again reitterates how the concept of "school" will be changed by the increasing use of technolgy.

Technology of the future will be so much beyond what we are currently using that it is hard for me grasp. Not only will the actual equipment/technology be light years beyond what we currently possess, the potential uses for this technology are extremely advanced. The idea that made the biggest impression on me is that personal computers can be used by other agencies when not being used by the owner. This is currently being done to analyze radio waves in the search for extraterrestrial life. Although the article was too advanced for me to understand a lot of what was being discussed, it seems to indicate that there is also tremendous potential for medical research using this same technique. Possibilities for Digital Film: Digital film opens up a whole new era for student creativity in the classroom. It allows students to quickly and efficiently take pictures or video for class projects. They do not have to just hope that they will have some good pictures when they get film developed. Students are able to view the picture immediately after they have taken it, delete the ones they do not like, and keep trying until they are pleased with what they have captured. Students may be able to use the same equipment for pictures and videos. It is not necessary to purchase two different cameras to perform these options. In addition, students can show their pictures/videos directly on the computers in their classrooms, or they can connect the computer to the classroom television and show on screen to the class as a whole. Students love to use digital cameras and get excited about working with them. As for the school as a whole, digital film also makes it possible to quickly make teacher/student identification cards, etc. In addition, some schools have begun to use digital cameras for year publications, which will allow for a more professional look in the school year book. These are tenants of good teaching, no matter what the subject or the grade, age, or level of the student. The way we are taught will have a vast impact on how well we learn and are able to apply our learning.

We all have to learn from the beginning. Students need to realize that we had to learn the information we have, just as they are learning. We weren't born with our current knowledge. We can be sensitive to their questions, fears, and doubts.

We can use words that will make students feel like we think they are stupid, or they are asking stupid question, or we can ask questions and guide them with suggestions, recommendations, etc. which will lead them to their own discoveries and help them feel good about themselves and their abilities. Students depend on us to help them, not criticize them. However, before we can teach, we have to communicate. Before we can communicate, we must use language that students fully understand. Start with the comcrete; move to the more abstract. Reword your statements until you see the "light of understanding" in their eyes.

If we see or hear something, we will remember part of it, but if we "do" something, we will remember it much longer, It becomes part of who we are. Give students opportunity to practice and apply what is being taught. In addition, let them do all they are capable of, don't do for them what they can do for themselves. If students say the can't do something, show them how, and give them the opportunity to do it.

Helping someone to use a computer requires the same good teaching techniques we use to teach students any other new knowledge or skill.

I think that scoring student essays by computer is an interesting concept. The EOC literacy assessments are are lengthy and take an enoromous amount of time to be scored by teachers. Although there are guidelines for scoring, the current method of scoring is somewhat subjective. It is not difficult to score mechanics (spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.) but is is more difficult to score the content. Teachers have to have many hours of training and practice before they can competetenly score such tests. This method is extremely time consuming as well as costly. For those reasons alone, computer grading should be evaluated. On the other hand, I do have some concerns about content being graded by computers. I don't really understand how they can score essays for content. However, this must be possible, or computer grading would not be an option for grading. As EOC testing becomes more and more in prevalent, I feel certain that a commercial market will develop for computer grading of such tests.

I personally feel that showing the Berg beheading was morally wrong. To me this brings up the issues of allowing terroists to have even more affect on our lives, which is what they delight in doing. In addition, it gives more publicity to their terroristic acts. Even more strongly, I have an aversion to showing/watching this video because I feel it takes away from the dignity of the person murdered, and invading his personal space and his family. Viewing such acts serves no useful purpose, and makes his death a merely form of entertainment for some. What useful or helpful purpose can there be for watching another person's murder?

As for showing this video in school, I personally cannot think of any reason for which I could justify showing this to students, no matter their age or subject matter. If students felt the need(curiosity?) to see the video, I am sure they would be able to find a web site on their own which would allow them to do so, without it becoming a school activity.

I find it interesting that several teachers were disciplined for showing this video to their class because it violated the school's internet policy, while other teachers were not disciplined because either the policy was unclear or because the viewing was not in direct opposition to school policy. Wouldn't you think that human compassion and consideration and respect for our fellow man would also come into the discussion?

virtual fieldtrips

This is an activity I would like to use with my high school students. Althought I have taken a few virtual fieldtrips on my own, I have not yet used this in the classroom. High school students do not often have the opportunity to go on fieldtrips, but they still love them. Although schedules and cost make it difficult to arrange fieldtrips at the high school level, virtual fieldtrips eliminate those problems. I plan to copy the pages from this website to future reference, and to incoopoarte virtual fieldtrips into my classes this fall.

Are personal student laptops a thing of the future or an idea whose time has come? More and more people are choosing to purchase laptops instead of desktop computers because of their portability, compactness, and amount of space required. A few schools even buy laptops for faculty and teachers. However, many teachers now take their personal laptops to school with them. Will students soon being doing the same?

I believe that as teachers integrate more and more technology into their classrooms, students will need more and more personal access to computers. Although some schools have computer labs, it is not always possible to access these computers when needed. This is often frustrating to both teachers and students. Therefore, students who have access to personal laptops may choose to bring them to school with them.

How will schools be affected by students and teachers bringing personal laptops into the school? In one way, this could be a huge financial benefit to the school system, since it would not have to purchase as many computers for student/faculty use. I can see personal laptops improving education in several ways. One way this would be beneficial is that teachers could quickly and easily communicate with students in regards to absences and make up work, etc. In addition, students could easily and quickly generate responses to assignments made by the teacher.

On the other hand, students and faculty bringing personal laptops to school generates its own set of problems. Our school had one example of such a problem just before the end of school. We were hit with an extremely wide-spread and vicious virus for several weeks. This caused us to have to competely close down all computers in the school for days. After tech support did many checks, it was finally concluded that this virus had gotten into our system through a personal laptop that had been brought to school and used. This is, I am sure, just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the challenges which would be presented when students bring personal laptops into the schools. As with all changes, I feel that schools would need to address potential problems and how they could be managed before allowing personal computers into the classroom. However, I do believe that these issues will be addressed and that students will soon be carrying laptop computers to school in place of back packs!

It is amazing to me that children as young as two and three years old already have technology savvy and use technology on a daily basis. Of course, this once again reflects what parents do at home with their children, not just what children learn on their own, and once again the nature/nurture philisophy comes into play. I see this as additional evidence that parents need to be actively involved with their children's learning.

My attention was caught by the fact that today's children have more thumb dexterity than their elders, due to video games, etc., and that they automtically use thumbs for such mundane tasks as punching elevator buttons and dialing phones-things which I would never have thought of using my thumb for! I was intrigued by the thought that a computer mouse could have an additional button for the thumb, and that the original inventor could not think where to put another button. I also find it interesting that Japan refers to the current generation as the "thumb tribe".

As I read the questions you posed at the beginning of your post, I was reminded of the national technology standards we reviewed in class last week. It is evident that today's teachers must be thoroughly trianed in technology in order to adequately instruct today's students. That is turn must be supported by teacher training programs as well as local school boards.

National Eductional Technology Standards

The eductional standards for technology for students, teachers and administrators may be found on the website above. These standards are exhaustive in their coverage. Student standards are grouped into the following categories: basic operations and concepts;
social, ethical, and human issues; production; problem solving; communication; research; problem solving, and decision making. These standards have been adopted by Arkansas schools for students at all educational levels. It is obvious from looking at the standards that students must be competent in more than keyboarding and internet skills. Based on my teaching experience in an Arkansas high school, I feel that most students have a long way to go before they can meet these standards. For students who choose several different computer classes as their elective classes, many of these standards will be able to meet the standards. However, students who choose their elective classes from other departments will most likely not be exposed to these skills to the extent that they can meet these standards.

In order for all students to meet the technology standards, teachers must incooporate these skills into their academic curriculum. This means that all teachers must be proficient in the use of technology. Standards for teachers are grouped into the following categories: technology operations and concepts; planning and designing learning environments and experiences; teaching, learning, and curriculum; assessment and evaluation; proudctivity and professional practice; and social, ethical, legal and human issues. Although many teachers have some knowledge in these areas, it is unlikely that many teachers can currently meet the standards. For this purpose, a minimum of six hours of technology hours of education/training are now required of all Arkansas teachers.

Before teachers and students can have the opportunity of becoming proficient in these standards, the school administration must be determined to make it happen. In this light, standards have also been set for administrators. These fall into the following areas: leadership and vision; lerning and teaching; productivity and professional practice; support management and opertions; asesment and evaluation, social, legal, and ethical issues. Without the full support of administators, training and equipment for teachers can not be obtained. Without adequately prepared teachers, students cannot learn. In order for studnets to meet todays technology standards, teachers and administrators will need to learn along with the students.

qst. 12 Can you calculate the exact square root of 2,570 without a calculator? Does the calculator make you smarter? Is the calculator intelligent?

Unfortunately, I can barely calculate the square root of anything even WITH a calculator! Not that I think the calculator is intelligent or smarter than me; it is just another tool(technology) which I can learn to use to help me solve problems in my life! As a late comer to the field of technology, I have had to overcome a "fear" of computers and other technology and sometimes have had the feeling that the machine is smarter than me. However, as my knowledge increases in the use of such items, I become more confident in putting them to use for myself. Thanks goodness an old dog can learn new tricks!!

qst. #8. Some educators argue that we learn more from our failures than our successes. Although I do believe that we can learn from our mistakes, I do not feel that we should deliberately let students fail in order to learn from their mistakes. For example, when we learn something inaccurately or have errors in our information, we then have to "undo" the wrong learning in order to "relearn" the correct information. Educators who believe that students should be put in a situation in which their hypostheses or predictions fail may have a point in regards to teaching students the scientific method, in that it leads students to their own discoveries, which will either prove or disprove their hypotheses. However, I do not feel that this method should be used on a continuing basis. I feel it would cause frustration for many students and possibly even discourage learning in some instances.
