How to Rip DVD to Standard Video or High Definition Video on Windows Vista Wed, 15 Jul 2009 05:34:00 +0000 Many people ever perplex with how to backup copying righted DVD, and many of our readers asked us via e-mail if we know any free tools which work on Windows Vista that can be used to rip DVD for playback on PMP (portable media players). Therefore, we decided to test some DVD ripper software and then make a tutorial on how to use the best tool we could find. In this article I will give you a step by step guide about how to rip dvd to standard video with handbrake and rip dvd to high definition video with Wondershare DVD Ripper.Part 1: How to Rip DVD to Standard Video with HandbrakeHandBrake is a freeware application that can convert movies and rip DVD including VIDEO_TS folders, DVD images, real DVDs. It can convert them to standard video like MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM.You can download the application from Handbrake.fr. Download the latest version for Windows Vista (select the GUI download link) and install it. Now launch Handbrake and let's see how we can rip DVD movies (West Wing) to .M4V for playback on iPod Touch. When you launch Handbrake, click on the 'Source' button from the menu bar, to select the files that you want to convert. As you can see, you have two choices: a video file or an DVD/VIDEO_TS folder. Choose what you prefer and then browse to the desired video file. Now click on the Browse button and choose a destination folder for the new video and type its file name.Next, select the output settings for the video file. This can be done from the presets panel on the right. Simply click on the 'iPhone & iPod Touch' option and all the output settings will be set in automatically. Finally, click the Start button, found near Source. Handbrake will begin the encoding process and a command window will open with details about the process. And the following performance screen shot is from testing on Windows Vista 32 Pentium 4 single core. It seems that the HandBrake occupies too many CPU threads. If you use a dual core processor, the conversion speed will be much faster. When the process ends the window disappears. For the DVD file is very large - over 4 GB, so it takes me near 9 hours to finish the conversion. And the operation seems to a little difficult for most of new users, it needs too many user define settings. Part 2: How to Rip DVD to High Definition video with Wondershare DVD Ripper? Many people complain that the video quality is not as clean as the original DVD after they ripped DVD to standard video. For an ordinary DVD movie is often 7-8 GB in size, if we convert them to standard video formats the size would be hundreds of MB, so we have to face the problem thatthe code compress process would destroy most of unimportant data and the video quality get bad. Then what can we do to resolve this issue? The answer is to rip DVD to High Definition video formats, for these HD videos are often bigger than standard video and decrease the video damage. So the HD video seems to be lossless compared with the original DVD.To finish the task, we need a tool to help us. The tool we use is Wondershare DVD RipperPlatinum, which can rip DVD to High definition video formats such as MKV, HD AVI, HD MP4, HD WMV, HD MOV, HD ASF, HD VOB etc. This program is very easy-to-use, just a few click to finish the conversion without any learn curve. You can download the software at the below link: Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum, and install the application.Once you launch the Wondershare DVD Ripper, you can click "Add" to load Real DVD or DVD-like source such as DVD folder, ISO files, IFO files. Why renting Blu-ray movies makes perfect sense Tue, 03 Mar 2009 05:34:00 +0000 by Don Reisinger March 2, 2009Sony's Blu-ray Disc is arguably overpriced and overhyped, and it probably won't be nearly as successful as DVD which can be rip DVD to video and play on PC with DVD Ripper software, but I came across an interesting tidbit of information over the weekend that may make some change their minds about the success of the high-definition video format.According to Nielsen VideoScan figures for the week ending February 22, Blu-ray captured 10 percent market share, and sales were up 29.31 percent over the same week last year. DVD captured the remaining 90 percent share, but its revenues were down almost 12 percent, year over year.Granted, that's just one week's figures, and it doesn't mean much in the broader sense, but if you look at previous weeks, those figures are much the same. In fact, Blu-ray is slowly gaining ground on DVD, and its 10 percent share is actually an impressive figure, given its history.I usually spend my video-allocated cash on other formats, but there is one place where Blu-ray will always win out for me: rentals. I won't stream films, and I won't rent DVDs. Blu-ray is the only format that I will rent from my local video store or get from Netflix. It's as simple as that.I've had too many lackluster experiences with streaming films. More often than not, if I stream a film through my cable video-on-demand box, it will look grainy, and its quality is the same as DVD even though it's advertised as an HD film. I watched "W" recently via a stream, and along with an absolutely ludicrous story, I found that the film's visual and audio quality were downright awful. But the worst part was having paid $4.99 for a DVD-quality film that was supposed to be in high definition. The same is true (in most cases) when I stream films through my Apple TV and convert DVD to Apple TV video with DVD to Apple TV Converter. More often than not, the "HD" film doesn't look nearly as nice as it should, and part of that is due to the fact that those films are available only in 720p, but the other part is that, well, they're just not that great over a streaming solution. In my long search for great visuals, I've decided to rent Blu-ray films. Notice how I said rent? Yeah, well, I still won't buy them--they're too expensive. And I'm starting to believe I'm not alone. According to market research firm Adams Research, film studios witnessed a 23.4 percent decline in DVD and Blu-ray sales during the fourth quarter of 2008. Although the company didn't break out sales of Blu-ray and DVD, and failed to mention why it believed this happened besides the economy, I don't think that it's a stretch to say more folks are switching to Blu-ray and choosing rentals over retail.Blu-ray simply looks best on my HDTV. It may not provide a huge value jump over DVD, and more often than not, the difference in picture quality is negligible, when I compare it to a film in my upconverting DVD player, but for $1 more at my local Hollywood Video or Netflix, it's worth using the next-generation format and finding those certain films that really do look much better on Blu-ray than anything else (I'm looking at you, "Dark Knight").At this point, when I'm ready to start watching a film at my house, I want the most value for my money. I can't get that with streaming services today because so far, at least in my experience, their ease of use is overshadowed by their general lack of outstanding visual and audio quality. And I won't rent DVDs because it doesn't make much sense, when Blu-ray films are available in the next shelf over for $1 or $2 more. The price difference is so small that it makes perfect sense for me to look for the film on Blu-ray.When the price difference becomes negligible between the two formats on store shelves, that's when I'll start buying Blu-ray films by the bushel. But until then, Blu-ray's niche in my entertainment life is in rentals, where the price difference is slight, and the relative quality is great. It's [...]
More US Consumers Drop Cable, DVDs As Content Moves Online Wed, 11 Feb 2009 02:35:00 +0000 SAN FRANCISCO -(Dow Jones)- For an idea of what's vexing U.S. entertainment industry executives these days, take a look at how Todd Mundt in Louisville, Ky., watches television and movies.Eager to save money, the public radio station employee canceled his cable- television subscription, opting instead to get his favorite shows from a host of free streaming video sites, including Hulu.com, a joint venture of General Electric Co.'s (GE) NBC Universal and News Corp. (NWS). Rather than rent DVDs from Blockbuster Inc. (BBI), Mundt streams movies from Netflix Inc. (NFLX), a cheap and convenient substitute.Mundt estimates he's saving at least $50 a month by getting his entertainment over the broadband connection he would pay for anyway just to have access to the Web. His prowess at finding entertainment online has also made him the envy of friends and colleagues."A lot of my friends take a look at my setup and say, 'Cool, how do I do that? '" Mundt said.Mundt is one of a growing tide of consumers that over the last year or so have begun cutting their cable television subscriptions and shunning DVDs as more content becomes available online and faster broadband connections reach more parts of the country. Now, with the economy in a tailspin and consumers pinching budgets, the trend is picking up speed even though high-definition offerings and live events are still hard to come by.No one knows how many people have cut their cable subscriptions, though some estimates have put the figure at about 1.1 million, or 1% of U.S. households with televisions. But already the trend is being blamed for shrinking performances at entertainment giants like Walt Disney Co. (DIS) and Time Warner Cable (TWC). Both companies blamed slipping revenue in part on the trend at earnings conferences last week.DVD sales have also been hit. The Los Angeles-based Digital Entertainment Group estimates DVD sales in 2008 fell 8% to $21.6 billion from a year earlier, while DVD rentals were flat.Cable and satellite television operators, who rely on subscription-based TV for about half of their revenue, are likely to be the biggest losers from the trend."People, particularly young people, are saying all I need is broadband," Time Warner Cable Chief Executive Glenn Britt said recently. "The danger here is...people will choose not to buy subscription video."Internet delivered movies also threatens to undermine the $14 billion in revenue that movie studios generate by distributing their titles on DVDs. That's because many consumers are asking themselves why they should buy a disc when the same movies are available over the Internet, often at a big discount or for free.Walt Disney Co. (DIS) is among the major U.S. studios to take notice. Disney said its studio revenues were down 26% last quarter and earnings before items were off 62% because of a soft DVD market driven in part by people accessing entertainment online. Already the shift has prompted Disney to shrink its home- video business."Consumer choice grows, we all know this to be true," Disney Chief Executive Robert Iger said recently. "This clearly has had an impact on broadcast television and may have a long-term potential impact on the DVD business."Not all companies will suffer and already potential winners are starting to emerge.Netflix, the online DVD rental and movie streaming company is a favorite among converts to online entertainment. The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company offers unlimited movie streaming from its 12,000 title catalogue for just $9 a month.Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), both of which operate successful online streaming services, are also already benefitting, as is software giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). In the past three months, owners of Microsoft Xbox 360 game consoles have bought packages that let them stream Netflix titles over their game machines and have watched 1.5 billion minutes of programming over that period.Makers of hardware tha[...]
What's blue about Blu-ray DVDs? Tue, 06 Jan 2009 06:09:00 +0000 From boston.com Optical discs use light to read and write data, and the color of the light is important. Older disc storage systems used red or infrared light, while the newer Blu-ray uses bluer light - hence the name. (Actually the name is a bit off, since the light is closer to violet.) To understand why the switch from red to violet is a big deal, keep in mind that light can be thought of as having waves. Red light has a relatively long wavelength of around 700 nm (1 nm is a billionth of a meter) with violet light about half that wavelength. Conventional DVDs and CDs use red and near infrared light with wavelengths of 650 nm and 780 nm respectively, while Blu-ray systems use violet light of 405 nm. Third party software DVD Converter to convert DVD to video file. Waves of a shorter length can "see" smaller structures - so more data can be on the disc they are reading or writing. Hence, the popularity of Blu-ray as the next generation of optical disc format. Why didn't we use shorter wavelengths from the start? While we have had good, cheap red and infrared lasers for a long time, violet has turned out to be a bit trickier to develop, requiring additional efforts in data encoding. Thus, the delay in its arrival in our techno-lexicon. Dr. Knowledge is written by physicists Stephen Reucroft and John Swain, both of Northeastern University. Anime Music Videos: DVD to MPEG Tue, 09 Dec 2008 08:50:00 +0000 When creating an anime music video, it is very important for you to plan your project before grabbing any footage that you need.If you are wanting to rip any footage off of anime DVDs that you own, you should only rip the footage you absolutely need for your project. You don’t want to rip an entire DVD, because the file will take up quite a bit of space on your hard drive. Also, I don’t condone ripping entire DVDs, because then you are not tempted to try to distribute whole episodes and breaking copyright law. If you want to acquire footage off of a DVD, you will need to acquire a software package that will allow you to rip your footage as either MPEG or WMV files. There are a number of software packages available that will enable you to do this. The following table is being provided for informational purposes only, so you can conduct your own research and decide what software will best suit your needs. I am not endorsing these software packages in any way, since I have never used any of them myself. BlackBerry Storm VS iPhone 3G: Will RIM's Blackberry be iPhone Killer? Wed, 26 Nov 2008 02:32:00 +0000 Recently I had published a side-by-side comparison of the iPhone 3G and T-Mobile G1 which evoked an interesting debate.(from:iphonehacks)Here comes another side-by-side comparison of Apple's iPhone 3G with RIM's BlackBerry Storm, which is considered as another iPhone Killer.BlackBerry Storm is expected to be released some time in November exclusively by Verizon in the US and Vodafone in UK.Hardware SpecDimension:Storm = 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.6 inchesiPhone 3G = 5.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inchesWeight:Storm = 155giPhone = 133gScreen Size:Storm = 3.2 inchesiPhone = 3.5 inchesCamera:Storm = 3.2M pixeliPhone = 2M pixelMemory:Storm = 1GB on board + 16GB expandable with MicroSDiPhone = 8GB / 16GB (No expansion)Battery:Storm = 5.5hrs talk time / 360 hrs standbyiPhone = 5hrs talk time / 300 hrs standbyUnlike T-Mobile G1 that we have reviewed earlier, BlackBerry Storm "steals" the design and looks much like the iPhone 3G. However, it does not look as sleek as iPhone 3G. It's a little bit thicker (0.14inches more) and heavier (22g more) than iPhone 3G. And, surprisingly, BlackBerry Storm does not come with Wi-Fi support or they probably consider Verizon's 3G network is good enough.BlackBerry Storm's screen is also a little bit smaller (3.2 inch) as compared to iPhone 3G (3.5 inch), however it sports a slightly higher resolution (460x360 pixels) than iPhone 3G (460x360 pixels).Winner: iPhone 3G Tips: How to convert DVD to iPhone 3G How to convert video/audio to MPEG-4, H.264, MP4 , M4A, MP3 and WAV, etc for playback on your iPhone?Input MethodWith the success of iPhone's multi-touch interface, touch is now the standard for any new smartphone. Like iPhone, Storm does not have physical slide-out keyboard and uses the screen as input, in fact its RIM's first smartphone to feature a touch screen. However, RIM highlights that the touch technology developed on Storm is somewhat different to other touch screen smartphone available. RIM refers its touch technology as "Clickable Screen". That means, when users press key on screen, they can actually feel the key pressed and release, just like you press the mouse button. They call it a game changing touch technology that makes on-screen keyboard more appealing. Also, like T-Mobile G1, it will have built-in cut and paste capability across applications a feature missing from iPhone 3G.Winner:Its difficult to call a winner on this one, until we get feedback from users on RIM's touch technology. We love iPhone 3G's revolutionary multi-touch interface.MultimediaMultimedia support is not the strong area of RIM smartphones, as they predominantly targets business users. Storm is developed with multiple support in mind to lure more casual users. Standard feature like music and video playback is included. A wide range of audio format (including MP3, AAC, WMA, etc) and video format (including MPEG4, WMV, etc). Storm also allows you to sync iTunes music files via BlackBerry Media Sync and has its own media software to manage your music.iPhone 3G is the best iPod Apple has ever created. The music and video playback experience is awesome. And, Apple continues to update features like Genius Playlist into iPhone makes iPhone's multimedia support nearly unbeatable. With its seamless integration with iTunes Store, you can download songs wirelessly or sync it between desktop using iTunes. iPhone 3G also supports a wide range of music formats but only plays Quick Time video.Winner: iPhone 3GCamera & Video Recording Apple did not upgrade the camera in iPhone 3G, its still a basic 2 megapixel camera while Storm comes with 3.2 megapixel camera and includes video recording capability. Storm also includes a flash and auto focus for its camera.Winner: Black[...]

Blu-ray Enthusiasts Alone Can't Save the Format Thu, 20 Nov 2008 06:51:00 +0000 November 14, 2008 05:52 PM ET David LaGesse HDTV owners like Blu-ray best when it comes to putting something up on the big, expensive screen. That was the most notable message from a survey of HDTV owners released today by the Digital Entertainment Group.Owners also think their hi-def sets are the bee's knees, and are willing to pay more for HD content, according to the numbers. But the main point was that Blu-ray will own the future, and the Los Angeles press conference today amounted to a cheering session for the format. The same association recently launched a $25 million promotional campaign for Blu-ray, in the face of growing reports from analysts that the format risks becoming a mere niche player.Today's report pooh-poohed the many converters to Blu-ray. It seemed particularly dismissive of what I think is the biggest threat, the new Internet delivery services that compete with the hi-def disks. Two thirds of Blu-ray owners who are familiar with downloading or streaming still prefer the HD disks, according to the group. HDTV owners in general, even if they don't own Blu-ray, agree at almost a 10-to-1 margin.Defenders, meanwhile, also say that at $200, Blu-ray players are cheaper than DVD players were at this point in their adoption. And disk sales are ahead of where DVD was at this point.I see nothing in any of the numbers to suggest Blu-ray has momentum. The adoption rates, and the survey as well, still represent early adopters. Hungry to fill their HD screens, enthusiasts are willing to spend money for the best. And there is no denying that Blu-ray offers the best in video and audio for HDTVs.The question here, and not asked by the survey, is what it will take to get others to buy them. Is the step up to Blu-ray worth the steep premium that's asked today? The entertainment group took comfort that a vast majority of respondents simply like having a physical disk, and cited that as a reason to buy Blu-ray. That only reinforces in my mind that we're talking about a minority made up of enthusiasts.I own few DVDs, which is the same for most of my friends. I suspect it's a small portion of home viewers who amass a library of movies, though one studio executive noted they account for much of any format's sales. "We will see those heavy buyers stay in the physical world for a long, long time to come," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. But owning disks will have less appeal this time around. Many people bought DVDs to be able to watch a good movie whenever they wanted. It was a crude and expensive form of video on demand. Now we can get good-quality, on-demand viewing across cable and the Internet.Even among movie renters, DVD had clear advantages that Blu-ray doesn't. DVD was not only better quality than VHS, but offered new features and was vastly more convenient. Blu-ray offers better quality and has new features that DVDs don't, but is no more convenient. And DVD didn't face the challenge from digital delivery. And more, you can convert Blu-ray DVD with Blu-ray converter for my ps3.It's worth noting that the Digital Entertainment Group is an alliance between Hollywood and electronics makers such as Philips and Panasonic. It's an increasingly uneasy alliance. Studios would love to cut out the manufacturers, stores and other middlemen and sell directly to consumers over the Internet.Maybe I read too much into body language, but the only time I remember a studio exec using the word "exciting" was in the prospects for downloads and streaming. "Frankly, we don't care how our product is consumed, all that we care is that it is consumed," said Steve Beeks, pre[...]
Rip DVD on DVD players Mon, 17 Nov 2008 08:14:00 +0000 Creating your own CDs and DVDs from digital files can be easy once you've mastered the basics, writes David Flynn.Music has leapt from the CD to the MP3, from the living room to the iPod. Video has done likewise, swapping grainy and snag-ridden VHS tapes for DVD discs and internet downloads. But if you want to take full advantage of all this digital media you need to go beyond what your standard Windows PC delivers.Sure, you can copy or rip CDs into MP3 tracks using either Microsoft's Windows Media Player software or Apple's iTunes. You can even burn those MP3 tracks back onto a blank CD to create a duplicate disc or a customised mix of your favourite songs or your favourite artist. But that's pretty much where things draw to a stop. How about printing a fancy cover for your mix disc? What if you want to copy a DVD instead of a CD? Maybe you want to watch downloaded internet video on a DVD player or your iPod. Those are all instances where you need to reach for specialised software to go beyond what Windows can do on its own.The two leaders in the field are Daniuosft DVD Ripper and Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum. Both have just released new upgrade editions, priced at $39 and $39 respectively, so this week we've put them through a series of real-world tests to help you determine the best buy.Up and runningDaniuosft DVD RipperThose two approaches are still very much in evidence today, although both Daniuosft DVD Ripper and Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum give you a friendly "edit screen" or "start screen" with into two real-tiime preview windows. Both are in fact a slew of individual programs rather than one massive package: you'll choose a DVD and suddenly find all DVD titles. We found Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum a little better than Daniuosft DVD Ripper in this regard.Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum is the first and best DVD Ripper software that supports almost all portable video/audio players. It lets you easily rip DVD to Video iPod, Zune, iPhone, Apple TV, PSP, Xbox 360, PS3, Archos, iRiver PMP Player, Creative Zen, PMP, MP4/MP3 Player, Smart Phone, Pocket PC, PDA, Mobile Phone and so on.And Daniusoft DVD Ripper is one of the best DVD ripping software/DVD Converter, which can help you rip DVD to almost all video and audio formats, such as convert DVD to AVI, rip DVD to MPEG, rip/convert dvd to xBox, WMV, DivX, MP4, H.264/AVC, RM, MOV, M4V, XviD, 3GP, MP3, WMA, WAV, RA, M4A, AAC, AC3, OGG, etc.Either way, be prepared to spend some time getting to know the ins and outs of the software.Extract audio from DVDThis is a common and undemanding task and usually involves duplicating a music audio so you've got a spare copy to play in the car. Both Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum and Daniusoft DVD Ripper did this with a few quick clicks. They extrat audio tracks, even when we clicked setting button to choose audio tracks.Rip a DVDOne of the best ways to take advantage of your ever-growing movie library is to rip DVD to PC.The DVD Movie can be rip to kinds of video files, such as DVD to MP4, DVD to M4V, DVD to AVI, DVD to WMV, DVD to MOV, DVD to 3GP, DVD to FLV, DVD to ASF, DVD to m2ts, DVD to VLC, Vob audio format so the disc will work on any CD player. The alternative is that Daniusoft DVD Ripper rips the water world DVD movie around 30 mins that can be enjoyed on all PCs and some of the more sophisticated CD and DVD players. And the Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum rips around 28 mins.If you watch a lot of video on your iPod or iPhone, we suggest Daniusoft Video Converter, an $35 program customised for Apple's fans.[...]

Some Best Free DVD Ripper software Wed, 22 Oct 2008 01:23:00 +0000 Whether you want to watch a movie on your iPod or back up your too-easily-scratched DVDs, DVD ripping is a mysterious realm for many. Even those in-the-know find it difficult to keep up with the best tools for the job, especially in the face of increased copy protection. On Tuesday we asked you to share your favorite DVD ripping tools; today we've sifted through hundreds of comments to bring you the five most popular answers. Hit the jump for a closer look at five of the best and most popular DVD ripping tools, then cast your vote to determine the best ripper of the bunch.Daniusoft Super DVD ripper is one of the best DVD ripping software, which can help you rip DVD to almost all video and audio formats, such as convert DVD to AVI, rip DVD to MPEG, WMV, DivX, MP4, H.264/AVC, RM, MOV, M4V, XviD, 3GP, MP3, WMA, WAV, RA, M4A, AAC, AC3, OGG, etc. Now, it's upgrade as super DVD Ripper to rip DVD without watermark and with more powerful DVD Rip edit functions.New features of Daniusoft Super DVD ripper:1. Free rip DVD without watermark for month.2. Support importing ISO file.3. Support MKV and MKA as output formats.4. Two real time preview windows can realize what you see is what you get.5. Support playing with full screen in main interface.6. Added the functions to categorize, save, rename and delete profiles.7. Added function to customize watermark for video file.8. Added the "apply to all" function to apply a profile to all selected DVD chapters/titles. DVD Shrink (Windows) Despite the fact that the freeware DVD Shrink hasn't been in active development for years, this freeware decrypter, ripper, and compressor is still a favorite all-in-one stop for ripping and backing up DVDs. Its compression feature is what sets DVD Shrink apart, compressing 8GB dual-layer DVDs down to 4GB sizes that will fit on standard, single-layer DVD-Rs (i.e., the type of DVDs most consumers can burn to). It's even inspired us to write our very own DVD Shrink helper application, DVD Rip, which turns the already simple DVD Shrink process into a one-click ripping affair. HandBrake (All Platforms) The free, cross-platform HandBrake makes ripping DVDs to a bevy of useful, playable file formats a cinch, with support for iPods, PSPs, Apple TVs, PS3s, and pretty much any other format your device requires. It's fast, free, and takes the difficulty out of both ripping and transcoding. DVDFab HD Decrypter.Much like DVD Shrink, DVDFab HD Decrypter cuts through copy protection and rips DVDs to your hard drive. Unlike DVD Shrink, DVDFab does not offer compression tools. DVDFab is shareware, but its trial version lets you do nearly as much as you'd ever need. That said, users who pony up for the platinum edition don't seem to have any regrets. MacTheRipper (Mac OS X)Freeware application MacTheRipper breaks copy protection from DVDs and rips the contents to your hard drive—which makes it the go-to Mac version of apps like DVD Shrink or DVDFab. Like the other two, MacTheRipper doesn't encode its rips to other formats (instead it just rips the DVD menu and all to your hard drive), but that's what Handbrake is there for.DVD DecrypterThe freeware DVD Decrypter works much like DVD Shrink and DVDFab, ripping DVDs to your hard drive by tearing through pesky copy protection. Like DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter hasn't been actively developed for a while, but it's still doing the job for most folks without complaint.[...]

How iTunes could become the ultimate DVD ripper--and why Apple won't let it Wed, 15 Oct 2008 01:53:00 +0000 The first smattering of user reactions to RealNetworks' RealDVD software--which allows users to legally rip DVD movies to their PC hard drives--is less than enthusiastic, to say the least. The most telling comment: "Lack of mobile device support is the killer for me." Indeed, Real's product lets you move ripped movies between a total of five licensed PCs, but that assumes they're on a USB hard drive or some sort of flash media--thus far, there's no provision for network streaming, and no support for transferring the movies to portable devices."The iTunes Store: Apple's biggest incentive not to add DVD ripping.(from:cnet.com)Of course, when people say "portable media players," it's pretty much a synonym for "iPod." And while we could imagine Real eventually cutting deals to have devices that are compatible with its proprietary RealDVD format, it's a safe bet that Apple won't be among the partners. But the whole existence of RealDVD raises another question: if Real can release software that makes it quick, easy, and legal for users to rip DVDs to PC hard drive, why can't Apple?Real's software is built on the legal precedent set by Kaleidescape's 2007 victory over the DVD Copy Control Association. Provided that you are backing up DVDs that you own, doing so for your own personal use, and keeping the copy-protection intact, Real's betting that it, too, can keep the lawyers at bay. Assuming the company is correct, though, that would seem to open the floodgates for other companies to release kosher DVD rippers.Apple's iTunes already lets you rip audio CDs --indeed, the original iTunes tagline was "Rip, Mix, Burn." One would think adding DVD ripping to iTunes' bag of tricks wouldn't be that big of a challenge. Yes, like Real's solution, an Apple-ripped DVD would have to be locked into a proprietary, DRM-encoded iTunes-only format. But for most people, that'll be a feature, not a bug. You'd pop the disc into your PC, and iTunes would ask how you'd want it ripped: optimized for Apple TV streaming or optimized for iPod/iPhone (i.e. larger, high-res files or smaller downscaled ones). Once it was in iTunes, the files could be transferred within the entire Applesphere of products: the PC desktop (Windows and Mac iTunes libraries), the living room (Apple TV), and the portable realm (iPod and iPhone). Now, the more digital-savvy among you are already saying, "I can do all of this already." Indeed, there are plenty of freeware/shareware programs that can rip your DVDs into an iTunes-optimized format, at the resolution of your choosing, where you can then do whatever you'd like with the file--including watch it on your PC, stream it to an Apple TV, or transfer it to an iPod or iPhone. But that's still a two-step process (at mininum) that requires a modicum of techie skills to get up and running. By contrast, building the process into iTunes would make it all but a one-click operation.Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, I think you better keep those underground freeware rippers installed--I don't think we'll be seeing this feature added to iTunes anytime soon, for two reasons. First, it's unclear if Real's legal gambit will pay off. After all, precedents were made to be overturned, and even if their position isn't legally tenable, deep-pocketed movie studios could try to tie down Real in expensive litigation--enough to make other companies shy away from releasing similar DVD ripping software.Secondly--and arguably more importantly--it's not really in Apple's financial interest [...]

Tue, 30 Sep 2008 13:08:00 +0000 iPod nano 4th:In contrast to last year's compacted design, the Nano has been stretched back to the candybar footprint of its first and second generations. Apple's fourth-generation iPod Nano returns to the original long, light, and slender formula that put the series on the map.Creative Zen X-Fi:Creative's newest flagship product is the Zen X-Fi, a high-capacity flash-based digital media player that adds Xtreme Fidelity (X-Fi) sound technology. But with added wireless features and X-Fi sound enhancement. Will this be enough, though, to satisfy the Zen fans who have been patiently waiting for Creative's latest addition to the family?Quickly look: iPod nano 4th vs Creative Zen X-FiiPod nano 4th1.Size:90.7 mm x 38.7 mm x 6.2 mm2.Weight: 1.3 ounces (36.8 grams)3.Capacities: 8GB - $149 or 16GB - $199 flash drive24.Screen: 2” (diagonal), 320x240-pixel5.Rated Battery Life: 8 hours or 16 hours of video56.Transfer Protoco: USB flash drive7.Video Formats: H.264 video, .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats, MPEG-4 video8.Audio Formats: MP3,WAV,MP3 VBR,AAC,Audible,AIFF9.Photo Formats: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD(Mac only)and PNG10.Other Features: Genius playlist tool, a tilt sensor, and accessibility features for the visually impaired, cover Flow browsing.Creative Zen X-Fi1.Size: 83mm x 55mm x 12.8mm2.Weight: 68g3.Capacities: 8GB (no Wi-fi) - $149, 16GB - $199, 32GB - $2804.Screen: 2.5”, 320x240 pixel, 16.7m colors5.Rated Battery Life: 36 hours audio, 5 hours video6.Transfer Protocol: MTP7.Video Formats: WMV, MPEG4-SP, Divx 4/5, Xvid, and MJPEG8.Audio Formats: MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV, and Audible 2,3,49.Photo Formats: JPG (Software will transcode BMP, GIF, PNG, and TIFF)10.Wireless: IEEE 802.11 b/g with WEP, WPA-PSK, or WPA2-PSK security11.Other Features: Built-In Speaker, X-Fi Sound Enhancement, FM Radio, Calendar, Contact, Task ListFeatures comparision of iPod nano 4th vs Creative Zen X-Fi: iPod nano 4th Key Features1.New Genius featureyou can create an instant 25-song playlists based around the musical characteristics of a single song. The Genius feature is easy to use, and the results are fun, provided your music collection holds enough songs to make interesting connections.2.Adds the same tilt-sensorIt allows for some interesting control tricks. Giving the iPod Nano a vigorous shake, for instance, puts the music player into shuffle mode. Causal shaking caused by running or exercising isn't enough to trigger the Nano's shuffle mode, and you can always deactivate the shake-to-shuffle feature under the iPod's setting menu or by engaging the hold switch.3.Cover Flow music viewiPod's Cover Flow music view when turning the device on its side. DVD Still Most Popular Format, NPD Group Says Mon, 22 Sep 2008 12:34:00 +0000 09.17.2008 — The average U.S. consumer spends $8 out of every $10 of their movie budget on buying or renting DVDs, according to a study by the NPD Group.DVD is still the most popular format, according to this data, regardless of the reported slashes in Blu-ray prices."Entertainment Trends in America" says 41 percent of dollars budgeted for movies and video are spent on DVD purchases.Any chance this is related to the 33 percent of consumers who rip DVDs with best dvd ripper. Also, 11 percent of the budgeted money was spent on TV programs on DVD and 29 percent on DVD rentals, including Netflix and other subscription services). ![]() Just 0.5 percent of U.S. consumers' movie budget is currently spent downloading movies and TV shows off the Web, NPD says."Everyone is guessing when video on demand and digital downloads will spell the end for packaged media," said NPD senior industry analyst Russ Crupnick, who presented the data at the DisplaySearch HDTV 2008 Conference in Hollywood, Calif." At this point, though, digital video is still an extremely small part of overall consumer entertainment spending."Just two percent of the survey respondents said they have paid for a digital video download the past three months. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said they watched a DVD they owned."A growing number of Americans are going to YouTube and other sites for streaming video, but when it comes to paying for video content, they're still focused on DVDs," Crupnick said."Though the near-term talk of a digital revolution is probably overblown, as we've seen previously in the music industry, new content delivery sources can quickly take root among consumers." That's why many home video companies are aggressively pursuing digital strategies, because the inflection point will come — it's just not coming tomorrow."
