Modcast #396: They Got You Covered

Tue, 21 Nov 2017 23:45:13 +0000

(image)
I'm baaaaaack. And with a very cool show of very cool covers. Everybody loves a good cover song. I've got a baker's dozen of them for you that showcase some of the best. What makes a good cover? Everybody has a different answer, but for me it's when a band surprises you somehow. Either with an atypical but spot on tribute, like The Ramones did on occasion, or when they simply outshine the original with a unique twist of some sort. Whatever it is that makes a good cover we all know one when we hear one, and you're going to hear a bunch on this modcast. Modcast #394: Give Yourself A Hand

Sat, 21 Oct 2017 16:36:53 +0000

So this is it, this is where the modcast jumps the shark ... again. All the music in the world and I'm busy making a jerk off mix. Hey, I just made it, you're listening to it. I hope. It wasn't the easiest modcast to put together either. Do you know how many songs there about self pleasure? It was hard to narrow it down. But I did. So get comfortable and listen in. Modcast #392: What Is The Perfect Pop Song?

Wed, 20 Sep 2017 05:32:03 +0000

(image)
What is the perfect pop song? Good luck on getting an answer. Most of us can't agree on what a pop song is, let alone which ones are perfect. Or near to. But, Mary Queen of Cosmos had the guts, the chutzpah, the balls if you will, to take up Mr. Suave's challenge to figure out the modern day perfect pop song. It's a good show with quote, "a lot of good upstroking and downstroking", so you know you're going to enjoy it on some level. What do you think? What is the perfect pop song, if there is such a thing? Are any of these that? I'll be the judge. The jury. And the executioner. If the Queen of Cosmos is lucky she will while away the rest of her life in musical purgatory. But if she's lucky (hint, hint, I'm the judge) she won't have to pay for all the vodka she wasted making all those cosmos to make this show listenable. Modcast #390: Joe Strummer's Bootcamp

Fri, 25 Aug 2017 20:31:16 +0000

(image)
Unless you've been living under a rock you know all about the recent outbreaks of violence during protests, anti-protests, free speech marches, and so on. From Portland, OR to Portland, ME; Boston, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco, Louisville. It seems like there is some sort of unrest just about everywhere. None of it more publicized though than the white supremacists and neo-Nazi's who marched in Charlottesville, Virginia. We shouldn't be surprised, this has happened many times before. Sadly, it will likley happen many times again. A now famous quote from uber-contrarian Henry Rollins has been popping up in memes and social media over and over again. "This is not the time to be dismayed, this is punk rock time. This is what Joe Strummer trained you for." That got me and Mary Queen of Cosmos thinking and drinking (we do a lot of both). Who are the people Joe trained? Who are the graduates of Joe Strummer's Bootcamp? This week's modcast highlights just a few. Modcast #389: Unofficial Tiki Oasis 2017 International Intrigue Mix

Mon, 07 Aug 2017 01:10:48 +0000

(image)
As is his usual modus operandi Ken from the cocktail syndicate is back with the officially Unofficial Tiki Oasis 2017: International Intrigue mix. It's really chapping my hide to have to listen to this since for the first time in a few years I'm not attending Tiki Oasis. I had to buy a roof and some siding for the house --neither of which I ever get to really look at you know seeing as they're on the outside and I'm on the inside-- which really put a dent in the old pocketbook. And following on the heels of my trip to New York, where the Suave's spent money like drunken sailors on leave, and ahead of an upcoming mele kalikimaka holiday expedition to the Hawaiian islands, money is tight. Like .... well never mind what it's tight like. Get a cocktail and loosen up for a good time. As always find a complete track list and bonus videos on the modcast homepage at mistersuave.com. Modcast #388: Deep Diving the Revival

(image)
Welcome to Modcast #388 in which I deep dive the mod revival and post-punk late '70s early '80s mod revival this week. There are a few here that most of you will know, but much of the rest is a bit more obscure. But no less better for being less renowned that's for sure. Modcast #387: Twophers

It's double the listening pleasure, twice as nice, two times the fun, on all new Modcast #387: Twophers. Because, I'm playing two tracks from every artist this week. Started out with a couple of bands that I just couldn't decide which track to include, and so I thought what the hell I'll play both. Two great tastes that taste great together, power pop and punk. Or, pop punk for short. I hesitate to call this a pop punk show but definitely leans in that direction. If you like those original pop punkers The Ramones, or Nikki & The Corvettes or The Go-Gos or The Muffs, Green Day, The Presidents of the United States, The Fastbacks, and so on then you are going to dig this week's show. Modcast #378: Best of 2016

Wed, 11 Jan 2017 21:26:50 +0000

(image)
I'm not so over 2016, especially all the good music it delivered. I've got 18 great songs from 18 great bands on today's show. How good was 2016? So good none of these also really great bands made that cut: Men of North Country, Vista Blue, Teenage Fan Club, The Darts, Flat Five, Madness, Seven Long Years, The Q, The Posies, The Eddies, Charles Bradley, James Hunter, Explorers Club, Fashionism, The Zolas, Nick Pride & The Pimptones, Dustaphonics, The Regrettes, Eli Paperboy Reed, Girl Ray, Dogtooth, The Ace, Plan-B, The Fleshtones, The Julie Ruin. Modcast #377: The People Who Died

Sat, 31 Dec 2016 07:54:44 +0000

(image)
If ever a year demanded a wake it's 2016. Have we ever felt more deeply the loss of so many cultural icons from Muhammed Ali to George Michael (hey I still love Wham's first album, so there!), Garry Shandling to Garry Marshall. It was just a shitty year for the touchstones of Gen X, the people we grew up with. The defacto mom who raised us, Florence Henderson, to the defacto royalty, Princess Leia, who was a role model to even us boys. So many writers, actors, singers and storytellers, too many to count and seemingly more than most other years for some reason. So, here's the wake, my and mine and Mary Queen of Cosmos take on celebrating the end of the year, wherein we play a few songs, raise a few drinks, and remember all of those who now leave us only with those memories. First rule of 2017? Don't talk about 2016. For a complete track list and bonus videos be sure to visit the modcast homepage at www.mistersuave.com. Modcast #191: Mod Essentials III The Britpop Invasion

Sat, 19 Feb 2011 17:33:46 +0000

(image)
Here, finally, was proof that mod could mutate into a reflection of contemporary street culture and yet still retain its vital characteristics: confidence, defiance and an appreciation of a nice pair of shoes, all wrapped up in a cocksure bravado traceable all the way back to original ‘tacky herbert’ Jimmy Cooper. A booming Loaded magazine (run by Jam fans James Brown and Tim Southwell) happily ran fashion spreads of Liam-esque models in fishtail parkas and Hush Puppies and Oasis duly became the biggest band since The Beatles. Once again mod chic had officially became the nation’s leisurewear and outlook of choice. -- Mojo Magazine, 2004
In the early 90s American music ruled the airwaves internationally. Seattle had spawned the angrily apathetic punk-metal hybrid that was grunge, and the slacker sound had rolled right round the world. For every action there is a reaction. Britpop was that reaction. Blur front man Damon Albarn explained Britpop has a reaction to grunge's lack of style. The Britpop scene of 1994 - 1997 was a sort of stylistic second coming of the mod revival, this one based less on soul and R&B and more on the pure Britishness of being what was essentially a modern mod. Britpop bands brought back the importance of being British, and the music was so thoroughly British it never did manage an invasion of the US the way sixties British music had. Britpop was a cultural shift through and through. It had its own movies like Trainspotting and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. It had its own celebrity nightlcub The Blow Up.  Its own style, lad boys along with its own documentation of the style, lad mags. But above all it had its own music which dominated the world's music scene throughout the mid-90s. So, as part of my mod essentials series of modcasts I'm exploring the Britpop phenomenon. Previously I looked the sixties mods and then the mod revival of the late 70s and early 80s. And now it's time to turn to Britpop and the 90s. You can explore more as well. I had a lot of resources that I was able to crib from, using audio clips and borrowing quotes. There are some good movies about the Britpop era: The Britpop Story and Live Forever. There is a fantastic book that delves into the whole scene from the music to the culture to the politics: Britpop!: Cool Britannia And The Spectacular Demise Of English Rock by John Harris. Mojo magazine produced an entire Britpop special edition a few years back that includes interviews with about 20 of the artists and briefly tells the scene's story. Once you get into it you'll find, as I did, how amazing a time it really was. Be sure to head over to the modcast homepage at mistersuave.com for a full track list for this show.

Modcast 125: Mod Essentials II - The Revival

Sat, 11 Apr 2009 15:47:39 +0000

(image)

Welcome to Mr. Suave’s Mod Mod World. This is a special episode of the modcast, the second in a series I call Mod Essentials. The first one, Mod Essentials: In The Beginning premiered last summer and featured my take on the most essential mod tracks of the 1960s. As you can imagine it was hardly definitive. And this one likely won’t be either . This is Mod Essentials II: The Revival. You will see that while there are some fantastic songs here, there are a number of key artists missing like The Crooks, Squire, The Amber Squad, Long Tall Shorty, The Cigarettes and lots more. From 1977 to 1981 mod was reborn in the UK, which sparked mod revivals around the world. For a few glorious years the energy and angst of punk was wed to the rhythm of soul, the pulse of power pop, and the fashions of the sixties. The Who release Quadrophenia at the height of the revival creating even more interest in all things mod. Inevitably the mod scene became overexposed, it went mainstream briefly, and that more than anything else killed it and drove the remaining mods back to their soul clubs to await the movements next revival -- still more than a decade away. Here then are the songs that I think epitomize the wide range of sounds in the mod revival. So, what are your essential mod revival tracks? I'm dying to find out from people what they see as the quintessential mod revival sound. Leave a comment and let me know what you think of my list here, what you would have added, or what you would have scrapped. Don't be shy.
