Gift guides often get so formal with the categories and over-simplification of your recipient’s interests… or they push things people want you to buy so hard. This is more just a list of awesome stuff we like that you COULD give someone - or buy for yourself. The only criteria? We like it.

How can you not smile when you see a bunch of realistic little birds with party hats made out of flowers and leaves on their heads? We received one of Vicki Sawyer’s playfully illustrated bird party cards a while back, and i only just dove into the rest of her work! It turns out she has quite the line of cards, placemats, place cards, and even a coloring book with Nashville based, Hester & Cook, and she is actually based right in Franklin, TN! In addition to birds, you’ll find lots of other creatures ~ from dogs to sheep to pigs and more, also, of course, with fun hats and accessories. Additionally, her artwork has been licensed on other products as well, from embroidery kits to mugs and more. She has also created three party bird filled books which can be ordered in print or digital forms.

But first, take a look at some of my favorite Hester & Cook by Vicki Sawyer picks on the next page!

Absurd, right? Ridiculous even? Well, even crazier, i’m totally impressed by it! We just got one for my dad, and while it was meant as a fun, silly gift, it’s proven far more functional than we thought! It really does keep your drink cold longer, and with a lid, it’s totally an adult sippy cup of sorts. For the animal lovers, their whale tail (with fishing hook detail) keeps the top closed, and can be flipped open to drink. The base is non slip, and the size is LARGE. It can hold 8oz of liquid and keep it icy cold, or super hot, depending on what you’re using it for. They are also designed in Nashville, TN!

See all the details on the next page! (And on a side note, the more i research, they more curious i am about trying out one of their coolers next! Perhaps YETI replacement time?)

It’s bold, super graphic, and you can’t help but take notice (whether you love it or hate it - running it by friends, i’ve gotten both responses. It’s certainly polarizing!) Personally, the household cleaners grab me the most… then the skull graphic on the espresso pods… then the playful generic-Ziploc/trash bags box graphics. The crisp single colored patterns on the clear product are a refreshing look for the cleaners. The purple plaid on the paper goods are a bit intense for me though. The packaging was designed by Elmwood that has a great Uniquely J Case Study up.

HEAD OVER TO NOTCOT.ORG FOR INSPIRATION OVERLOADS UPDATED DAILY! (As usual…)

Hi there. Let’s make this official - i’m taking a break from the bloggy part of NOTCOT! (Insert deep sigh of relief?) It’s been 12 and a bit years, and life has taken so many twists and turns and it’s been a roller coaster ride around the world and internet - so, THANK YOU to all of you who joined the ride! Until the last year or so, everything that i found and loved i shared here… my brain has been a design junkie for 3 decades!

As someone that craves newness like no other… it was inevitable that i’d need to keep shaking things up in my life, and lately that has turned to other projects and endeavors that are less internet-shareable (for the moment.)

SO… i’ll be back. Possibly tomorrow. Possibly 298 days from now. Your guess is as good as mine? But first things first, i’m officially saying i’m on a break from blogging. Let’s see where that leads.

If you’re curious what i’m up to, or want to collaborate or brainstorm or make amazing things together - let’s talk? I’m still happily doing the NOTlabs things and the real estate thing and… well… quite a few other things too!

And again… HEAD OVER TO NOTCOT.ORG FOR INSPIRATION OVERLOADS UPDATED DAILY! (It’s business as usual over there! and to be honest, it’s really hard to break the daily habit of sharing things that inspire me!)

The Premium Limited Edition FISH TANKS spared no detail - complete with Custom Gold Fish Scale battery (that is compatible with most other cartridges!), Premium Gold-tipped ABX Tangie cartridge (with fish!), collector’s edition packaging, and velvet vape carrying case. Dare i say, it feels absurdly fancy in the funnest, silliest way possible? The Path of TOTALITY! What a phrase. Can you believe the hype and merch madness going on across the US in preparation for tomorrow’s solar eclipse? A lot of it is pretty painful. Yes yes, from a fascination of space and nature standpoint it’s truly awe inspiring… but putting that aside for this post, it’s been hard to ignore the creative inspiration it’s triggered as well!

Nashville is one of the largest cities in the “path of totality” and as such, it’s become quite the event tomorrow… which also means that my Nashville centric instagram feed has been flooded with everything from eclipse cotton candy cocktails and smoothies to cookies, tshirts, gig posters and more… and they are pretty awesome! I tried to search for more gorgeous imagery from other towns and cities, but haven’t found much worth sharing yet (so please leave comments with links if you know of some to highlight!)

Ready for Eclipse Graphic Overload? To the next page!

Focusing on the theme of “thriving in the next industrial revolution,” to demonstrate human and robot symbiosis, we created a sculpture of a human hand and a robot hand coming together. Part invitation and part desk object, they are perfectly suited to hold your phone or business cards.

These handmade pieces are cast in resin, painted, and mounted on laser etched wood bases that have the light bulb logo on the top, and a quote and logos on the bottom. We made a first run of 130 pieces, packed them up, and shipped them all over the US, but not before taking some photos to share with you! Take a look at the details and making-of on the next page.

How mesmerizingly beautiful are Passiflora Flowers? AND they produce delicious Passion Fruit?!?! I’ve been looking for an excuse to plant some for a while, but didn’t want to have an area where the vines could engulf surrounding trees.

So, when a monster house popped up behind ours, Shawn and i were inspired to create a private nook off the bedroom. We imagined a trellis with L shaped bench - clean, simple, wooden and angled ever so perfectly to be comfortable to lean and lounge on. Something that would pair with both smaller coffee tables for hanging out, as well as a dining/work table when appropriate. Something that could withstand the elements, and inspire us every time we walk by. From the outside, the vines would slowly camouflage the structure, from the inside, you’d be seated in a lush, private oasis.

We designed and built it earlier this year, and i’ve been waiting to have the vines fill in and flower to take more pictures for a post… well, they have not only been filling in super fast, but also flowering, and are currently bearing quite a bit of fruit! So take a look on the next page for a peek at the process from start to finish… well the current state of it anyhow, who knows if we’ll keep adding more?!?!

While friends keep asking... Go Preds! Stanley Cup madness is becoming quite the party throughout Nashville right now! What a trip… just back from yet another Nashville trip. We’ve been back and forth quite a bit the last few years, but especially the last few months! It feels like our American Airlines LAX-BNA flights are becoming our commuter flights. While friends keep asking what it is about Nashville that I love (beyond Shawn’s family being there, and his having grown up there) ~ this flight home helped me realize it’s been a great escape! It’s an amazing city in the midst of SO much growth, and their momentum and rate of change has been infectious. It’s that perfect scale of small enough to keep up with what’s new (even from afar) and big enough to constantly find new things… and the real estate market is booming (still!) There’s been non stop construction on every scale for the last few years, a few new hotels (from luxury boutiquey artsy ones to mega business traveler hotels) each trip, so many new restaurants and shops, and it feels like a new neighborhood emerges each trip (realtors and developers just keep coming up with new names?) Getting to catch up on their complex history, while exploring the present state of things (growing pains and all), and diving in to understand the future of Nashville has been quite the hyper-speed education. I’ve learned more about how a city grows and evolves from the cultural, political, and financial aspects the last few years than ever before… and while i’m not sure how it all fits in with the NOTCOT side of my brain quite yet, i’m sure it will all make sense soon! But for now, buying houses we adore (that need some love, but have so much potential) have been our little way of investing in the future of where this amazing city is going. As for the more NOTCOT side of things… while it’s fun to see all the new shops/design projects emerging, much of it does seem to reflect things you can find all over the world (from the hipster coffee shops to the boutiques that seem better at instagram than face to face customer service to the reclaimed wood/tile overdoses) - but what most inspires me are the products and experiences that are uniquely Nashville… and that seems to come in the form of nice people, great food, and lively music (and the Predators!) The real trick with visiting Nashville lately, seems to be unearthing the older hidden gems before they might disappear! Take a peek on the next page to see some of the fun we’ve had, and the progress on our latest NOTCOT Nashville Project House (in Lockeland Springs!) on the next page. Patagonia Provisions

While the packaging... Whoever says it’s difficult to eat healthy, didn’t realize you could grab pouches of delicious, organic food at Patagonia… and the hardest step might be adding hot water. Whether for camping/adventures, dorm room living, or just the chaos of every day life… Patagonia Provisions is a solution to easily feeding yourself healthy, tasty meals and snacks. While the packaging and photo/illustrations look great, i must admit i was hesitant at first. Patagonia makes incredible gear and clothing, but food? So when they offered to send some samples over, i had to try it! And it tastes as good as its packaging looks! Detailed looks at what we sampled (from hot breakfast grains to smoked salmon to buffalo jerky, savory grains, and more) on the next page ~ in its packaged and finished forms. Back in 2014, we reviewed Good-To-Go gourmet dehydrated food, which was some of the better tasting, just-add-hot-water instant meals we’d had. These packs from Patagonia Provisions are certainly another option we’d add to the packing list when heading on NOTFZJ80 adventures as well as back up easy food in the kitchen at home. While most Patagonia Provisions can be seen as snacks or meals on their own, they can also be considered a base or an ingredient depending on your creativity. Their instagram contest “How Do You Top It” shares lots of pictures of what people add to the soups and chili. There’s even a Recipes Section filled with things you can cook using breakfast and savory grains (i.e. scones, pancakes, tabbouleh) as well as their smoked salmon. While packaging and taste are only some of the factors to love about Patagonia Provisions, you can also dive into the whole story of WHY Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard, wanted to get into food. “What we eat does more than just fill our stomachs and nourish our bodies; good food lifts our spirits and helps us understand the world a little better.” Patagonia Provisions not only aspires to feed people well, but help find solutions to repair the food chain - with everything from the sourcing of products, to causing no unnecessary harm, helping environmental crises, and more. After trying these, i’m tempted to gift a few packs to friends who can’t stand cooking and think healthy eating is hard… maybe these can be a gateway to helping people understand where food comes from, and what’s possible in the realm of sustainable, delicious, and healthy eating.
