Cute Lighthouse Craft

Sat, 24 May 2014 13:27:04 +00002014-05-24T13:27:04Z

Yesterday my nephew came home with the cutest lighthouse craft. He had gone on a field trip with his class the day before to see our local lighthouse, so I guess they made these to remember what they learned.

To make the lighthouse you'll need to stack two styrofoam cups on top of each other.

Next, cut a few squares out of yellow paper. You can use one of those yellow sticky pads or yellow construction paper. Glue them closer to the top of the styrofoam cup to represent windows that have a light shining through them.

Now you can create a top for the light house by folding a black piece of paper into the shape of a cone. Glue it in place.

Give the lighthouse a door by drawing it in with a permanent marker. That's it. You now have a cut little lighthouse.

Patriotic Porch Swing

Fri, 23 May 2014 15:16:15 +00002014-05-23T15:16:15Z

After my grandmother passed away, the kids and I inherited her porch swing. It needed a paint job pretty bad. My teenager and her two friends asked if they could paint it. I decided to let them come up with their own design and carry it out.

I was very impressed with their work. They turned my grandmother's porch swing into a patriotic symbol for all to see as they pass by our house (we live on a highway).

First the girls turned the back of the porch swing into an American flag. Then they turned the arms of the swing into red and white stripes. They got creative with the seat portion of the swing by painting it white and then splattering red and blue paint over it.

I get compliments on this porch swing all the time. This is another reason why I advocate for parents to allow their children to be creative and explore their talents when an opportunity arises.

Tissue Paper Flower

Tue, 13 May 2014 09:16:37 +00002014-05-13T09:16:37Z

My nephew made me this tissue paper flower at church for Mother's Day. It was so cute I thought I might write a little blog post on it.

First, each child needs two pieces of tissue paper that has been cut into a rectangle. My nephew used two pink pieces, but I saw kids using two different colors and it looked just as good.

Next, the children need to place the two pieces of tissue paper on top of each other and then fold them the same way you would if you were making a fan.

Now pinch the center together with your hand and wrap a green pipe cleaner around it so that the pipe cleaner then hangs down to form the flower's stem.

Pull the sides of the flower out to form your flower.

To give your flower a center simply use a hot glue gun and attach a pom pom. The glue only takes a few moments to dry and you are all done.

My niece took her flower and turned it into a ring by wrapping the end of the flower stem around her finger.

Love Cotton by Dawn

I'm not the only one in my family who is talented when it comes to crafts. My Aunt Dawn just started her own website to sell and take orders for items created using 100% cotton. You can check out the site here: Love Cotton by Dawn

I should just add a disclaimer that I don't gain anything by telling you about my aunt's website. I just believe in her products and know how much love and hard work she puts into making them. She is a loving mother to 8 grown children and over 20 grandchildren.

Some of the items you'll find on my aunt's website include bibs, rope baskets, baby blankets, quilts, and ornaments. If you have something special in mind that you'd like her to make, all you have to do is send her an email. She does take special orders.

Pussy Willows

Sat, 26 Apr 2014 14:11:04 +00002014-04-26T14:11:04Z

(image)

When I was growing up, my great grandmother had pussy willow plants (Salix cinerea) all over her house. My kids didn't even know what one was until I began to tell them stories about my great grandmother. I thought it might be fun to talk about planting a pussy willow branch and then constructing a few pussy willow crafts.

Ask a friend that has a pussy willow bush for a 12-inch pussy willow cutting. Have your child set the cutting in a clear vase filled at least half way with water. Change the water every few days and after two or three weeks you should be able to plant it. You'll know it's time because you can see the roots forming through the glass vase.

Take your pussy willow branch outside and locate a spot that receives full sun. Pussy willow plants do well in almost any soil type, but you can mix some compost into your soil to give the plant a good start. Now all you need to do is keep the soil watered until the pussy willow bush is well established.

Once your child has started his or her own pussy willow plant, you can change the focus to creating a pussy willow craft.

You will need cotton swabs, scissors, thin twigs, glue, and some construction paper.

Pick one piece of construction paper to be your background. The next sheet of construction paper should be cut into the shape of a vase or flower pot. Glue the vase onto the bottom center of the background piece of construction paper.

Find some thin twigs outside and glue them so that they are coming out of the vase.

Cut a few cotton swabs to resemble the pussy willow's catkins and then glue them coming off of the twigs.

Wait for the glue to dry before displaying it in the house.
