SanDisk Extreme IV CF cards have undergone internal testing with many leading manufacturers’ cameras and DSLRs, such as Canon’s EOS series, Nikon’s D300 and D3 cameras, the Sony Alpha A700, and the Olympus E500 and E3 cameras.Depending on the camera used, the increased performance of the SanDisk Extreme IV memory card line may help reduce the delay between shots, enabling photographers to take more photos overall. The high-speed cards let all photographers save time and improve their workflow with faster card-to-computer data transfer speeds.Rob Galbraith, a professional photographer and an independent digital imaging reviewer, tested the 16GB SanDisk Extreme IV memory card and released his review on www.robgalbraith.com. Following performance testing with the Nikon D700 and Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III digital cameras, Rob states that the 16GB SanDisk Extreme IV card offers the fastest write speed of any card at the 16GB capacity. He adds that such top-line performance can be expected when using the card with most or all current Canon and Nikon digital SLRs.The new high-capacity, high-performance SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash cards are ideal for professional photographers who typically shoot in RAW or RAW + JPG formats, which require up to ten times more card capacity than JPG images. In addition, photographers who regularly use burst or continuous shooting mode during high-action situations such as sporting, wildlife or fashion photography can also benefit from the increased capacity and performance.“The new 16GB SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash card at 45MB/s demonstrates SanDisk’s commitment to providing serious photographers with the high performance they require,” said Susan Park, director of consumer product marketing for SanDisk’s performance cards. “Our goal is to help photographers maximize their productive output by equipping them with cards that offer ample storage space and fast data transfer rates.”“Hasselblad and SanDisk have a long working relationship in advancing digital photography,” said Christian Poulsen, the CEO of Hasselblad. “The 16GB SanDisk Extreme IV card’s increased storage capacity and high speed deliver the performance required to optimize our Hasselblad digital backs and H3D digital cameras for professional-grade uses.”SanDisk Extreme IV cards carry a lifetime limited warranty and hold the industry’s widest guaranteed operating temperature range, from 13F (minus 25C) to 185F (plus 85C). Fuji promises better than F31 performance Sat, 27 Sep 2008 17:33:00 +0000 Revolutionary sensor blazes the way to a new era of high image quality “Super CCD EXR”Pre-Photokina 2008: Fujifilm's second technology announcement of the day is the latest development of its Super CCD sensor, Super CCD EXR. Designed as a 'three in one' sensor combining the benefits of high resolution, high sensitivity and wide dynamic range, Super CCD EXR uses a totally new color filter array and has the ability to process half the pixels separately. This should, according to the press release, get Fujifilm closer to the holy grail of compact camera design; small sensors that don't sacrifice noise and DR for resolution. Again there's no product this time around.A ‘three-in-one’ sensor for high resolution, high sensitivity and wide dynamic range Made by photographic specialists for photographic specialistsPHOTOKINA 2008, COLOGNE, GERMANY, September 23, 2008 FUJIFILM Corporation, on the anniversary of 10 years of FinePix cameras, has developed “Super CCD EXR,” a revolutionary new sensor developed in the rigorous pursuit of high image quality. There is strong demand in the digital camera market to increase the number of pixels on a sensor, which, all too often, is used as a convenient yardstick for image quality. While introducing excellent 12-megapixel cameras such as the FinePix F50fd and the FinePix F100fd, Fujifilm has had great success in increasing pixel density while at the same time controlling noise and optimizing sensitivity. Fujifilm’s campaign to improve overall image quality, while at the same time increasing sensor resolution, has been coordinated under the program of ‘Real Photo Technology.’‘Real Photo Technology’ is underpinned by the belief that experienced photographers, many brought up using famous reversal films like FUJICHROME Velvia or PROVIA, understand that true image quality is about a combination of many factors like tone, hue, color fidelity, dynamic range, sharpness, and resolution. It is well known that increasing the pixel count on a sensor actually makes it more difficult to achieve high sensitivity and wide dynamic range. As the photodiode gets smaller, the problems of increased noise, blooming and clipping increase. Super CCD EXRIt is widely believed that ‘high resolution’ and ‘high sensitivity’ are irreconcilable opposites, and impossible to optimize on the same sensor, particularly for compact cameras, where sensors are necessarily smaller. High quality pictures are dependent on the subject. Excellent low light pictures need high sensitivity; high contrast pictures need wide dynamic range, while fine details, like the leaves of a tree or strands of a model’s hair, depend on high resolution. Fujifilm engineers set about the task of building a Flexible sensor to match the demands of the photographer. The end-goal is to produce a sensor that works as close to that of the human eye as possible. Whatever nuance of color or sensitivity of tone that makes the scene so special to the photographer should be the continual challenge of the sensor engineer. The EXR sensor is essentially a switchable sensor; changing its complex electronic behavior to suit the subject, changing its characteristics as the photographer demands, and producing the very best picture without making compromises.“Super CCD EXR” is the latest new generation of Super CCD to be produced by Fujifilm. Over the years, Fujifilm has excelled in high resolution sensors through ‘HR’ technology (F50fd, F100fd) and high sensitivity/wide dynamic range through ‘SR’ sensors (S3 Pro, S5 Pro). The direction in the future will be to combine HR and SR technology together to produce one universal sensor suitable for all high quality photography.> more Technology of Super CCD EXR [...]

Leica M8 firmware 2.00 Sat, 20 Sep 2008 16:45:00 +0000 Leica has today posted firmware 2.00 for the M8 digital rangefinder. This update adds support for SDHC cards (up to 32 GB) as well as adding an Auto-ISO option (a new feature touted for the M8.2). Installation is carried out by dropping the file onto an SD card.Click here for the Leica M8 downloads page Firmware version 2.000 - The update adds these improvements to your camera: Compatibility to memory cards in the SDHC standard up to 32GB capacity. Note: The choice of SD and SDHC cards in the market is already very big and is constantly growing. Therefore, Leica Camera AG is not able to do comprehensive compatibility- and quality testing with all available cards in the market. We recommend “Extreme III” or “Professional” from the leading brands such as “SanDisk” or “Lexar”. Using other card types, will not damage camera or card, but as especially “no name” cards do not respect the full SD or SDHC standards, Leica Camera AG cannot warranty full function with those cards. New function “AUTO-ISO” with setting options for maximum ISO values and the slowest shutter speed (please see also instructions for LEICA M8.2 from page 121) Note: It is not possible to “downdate” LEICA M8 cameras to previous firmware releases, once the version 2.000 has been installed.

Photokina 2008 Show Report (preview) Fri, 05 Sep 2008 17:09:00 +0000 Welcome to the Digital Photography Review Photokina 2008 show report. The Photokina 'World of Imaging' Trade Show is held every two years at the Cologne Exhibition Center, Germany. This year will mark the thirtieth Photokina, the first of which was held between 6th and 14th May 1950. Over the years Photokina has been the place manufacturers have announced some of their most significant new products. The last show, held in 2006, attracted 162,492 visitors (65% of whom were trade) and had no less than 1,579 exhibitors. This year the show will take place between the 23rd and 28th September (10 AM to 6 PM). Announcements of 'Photokina products' is already well underway and began around the beginning of August. As usual (this will be our fifth Photokina) we will be providing frequent and detailed coverage of product announcements as well as a live 'from the show floor' report which will appear here and subsequent pages during the show.Photokina 2008 preview / predictions / hopesMirrorless Large Sensor Compacts - Perhaps the most exciting thing to happen to the digital camera market in quite some years. We have already seen the Micro Four Thirds announcement and so fully expect to see products from Panasonic and Olympus. Samsung have also stuck their oar in the water and stated that they too are working on a compact system which uses an APS-C size sensor.Full frame sensors - Full frame sensors - This part of the picture is pretty much complete, however at this Photokina there will be more digital SLRs with full frame (36 x 24 mm) sensors than any previous show, and they will cost much less than they have at any time in the past. It's not inconceivable to think that the future of semi-professional and professional photography will be viewed through a big viewfinder.DSLR Lenses - Camera resolutions keep getting higher and you can't help feeling that some of the key lenses in certain manufacturer's systems - some of which date back to the days of film - are starting to lag behind and are in urgent need of a refresh. We expect to see more wide range (18-200mm type) lenses for crop cameras and we hope to see the major system manufacturers putting as much effort into lens development as they currently put into camera development.Compact camera complacency - It pretty much goes without saying that we will see a cohort of slightly re-engineered compact cameras with higher pixel counts, larger screens and multiple-color options but little else to excite the market. It really is time for the manufacturers to sit up and realize that this can't go on for very much longer, the compact market is crying out for some real innovation, and bravery (fewer megapixels, better / bigger sensors, better lenses) in the face of what they (or rather the big buyers) think they we want. Before during and after the showThis page serves as the index for our final show report and will be the page for you to bookmark for regular updates from now until after the show has finished. This page will be updated live from the show floor during show hours. The 'New Product Index' table below provides a summary of what has been announced including some CES products. The unfolding story of Photokina 2008Below you will find the 'New Product Index', this constantly updated list provides a very quick overview of products announced either for or during Photokina. During the show itself this page will also carry an index to our live show reportThe most hands-on previews / reviews, anywhereIn the mad run-up to Photokina we've been working very hard to bring you detailed hands-on previews of some of the key cameras at Photokina.
