Photokina 2008: SanDisk has today introduced new Compact Flash cards which offer increased storage capacity and faster read/write speeds. The Extreme III CompactFlash card now comes in a 32GB version with a speed of 30MB/s, and the Extreme IV CompactFlash card now comes in a 16GB version with a speed of 45 MB/s. Leica M8 firmware 2.00

Leica has today posted firmware 2.00 for the M8 digital rangefinder. This update adds support for SDHC cards (up to 32 GB) as well as adding an Auto-ISO option (a new feature touted for the M8.2). Installation is carried out by dropping the file onto an SD card.

Note: The choice of SD and SDHC cards in the market is already very big and is constantly growing. Therefore, Leica Camera AG is not able to do comprehensive compatibility- and quality testing with all available cards in the market. We recommend “Extreme III” or “Professional” from the leading brands such as “SanDisk” or “Lexar”. Using other card types, will not damage camera or card, but as especially “no name” cards do not respect the full SD or SDHC standards, Leica Camera AG cannot warranty full function with those cards.

New function “AUTO-ISO” with setting options for maximum ISO values and the slowest shutter speed (please see also instructions for LEICA M8.2 from page 121)

Note: It is not possible to “downdate” LEICA M8 cameras to previous firmware releases, once the version 2.000 has been installed.

Sony updates A700 firmware and processing software

Sony has issued a firmware update for its A700 DSLR. The firmware, widely distributed having been posted on the company's Japanese site, makes a number of changes, including a noise-reduction 'off' setting that may address some of the criticisms originally leveled at the camera. Other modifications include changes to bracketing, white balance and dynamic range optimization. Welcome to the Digital Photography Review Photokina 2008 show report. The Photokina 'World of Imaging' Trade Show is held every two years at the Cologne Exhibition Center, Germany. This year will mark the thirtieth Photokina, the first of which was held between 6th and 14th May 1950. Over the years Photokina has been the place manufacturers have announced some of their most significant new products.The last show, held in 2006, attracted 162,492 visitors (65% of whom were trade) and had no less than 1,579 exhibitors. This year the show will take place between the 23rd and 28th September (10 AM to 6 PM). Announcements of 'Photokina products' is already well underway and began around the beginning of August.As usual (this will be our fifth Photokina) we will be providing frequent and detailed coverage of product announcements as well as a live 'from the show floor' report which will appear here and subsequent pages during the show.Photokina 2008 preview / predictions / hopesMirrorless Large Sensor Compacts - Perhaps the most exciting thing to happen to the digital camera market in quite some years. We have already seen the Micro Four Thirds announcement and so fully expect to see products from Panasonic and Olympus. Samsung have also stuck their oar in the water and stated that they too are working on a compact system which uses an APS-C size sensor.Full frame sensors - Full frame sensors - This part of the picture is pretty much complete, however at this Photokina there will be more digital SLRs with full frame (36 x 24 mm) sensors than any previous show, and they will cost much less than they have at any time in the past. It's not inconceivable to think that the future of semi-professional and professional photography will be viewed through a big viewfinder.DSLR Lenses - Camera resolutions keep getting higher and you can't help feeling that some of the key lenses in certain manufacturer's systems - some of which date back to the days of film - are starting to lag behind and are in urgent need of a refresh. We expect to see more wide range (18-200mm type) lenses for crop cameras and we hope to see the major system manufacturers putting as much effort into lens development as they currently put into camera development.Compact camera complacency - It pretty much goes without saying that we will see a cohort of slightly re-engineered compact cameras with higher pixel counts, larger screens and multiple-color options but little else to excite the market.
