Our Central America animal for February is a coati, also known as a coatimundi or pizote. Coatis are members of the raccoon family with flexible noses, expressive tails, and rascally personalities. One time in Costa Rica, a coati grabbed our lunch bag from our hands and scurried into the forest!

Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua is one of Central America's most unique destinations. It's an island. In Central America's largest lake. Made of two volcanoes. One of them active.

It's also an amazing (and undertouristed) place to visit. Easily accessible via ferry from Rivas, Nicaragua, Isla de Ometepe offers hiking trails, volcano trekking opportunities, archaeological sites, lush coffee plantations, and beaches -- many of them empty.
