Chatting with a Biker

Sat, 31 May 2014 22:18:58 +00002014-05-31T22:18:58Z

The conversations I've had with bikers in town for the Republic of Texas Biker Rally have been some of the most entertaining I can remember. First of all, many of them are engineers and software geeks who just dress up to look tough on weekends. But some of them are the real deal, people who live the biker lifestyle year-round. They are wanderers and artists and lost souls, and I highly recommend buying one of them a beer when they're in town. You might just learn a little bit about yourself in the process. Take a look at this Beginner's Guide to the ROT Rally.

Fear of Adult Stores

Sat, 31 May 2014 22:14:54 +00002014-05-31T22:14:54Z

It seems crazy that in 2014, anyone would still be uncomfortable walking into an adult store. But I'll admit it: I still am. There are several different kinds, with varying levels of kinkiness, and it's hard to know in advance which one you're gonna get. Well, never fear, because I've put together a handy guide to Adult Stores in Austin. I can't guarantee that you won't find a creep or two lingering in the back corner somewhere, but for the most part, these stores are committed to helping people live fun, healthy sex lives with the help of a few toys.

The X Games Texas Contingent

Sat, 31 May 2014 22:10:09 +00002014-05-31T22:10:09Z

I didn't have a real appreciation of how varied the X Games are until I started reading about the Texas competitors. They range from fresh-faced skateboarders to leathery-faced off-road truck racers. The facilities they're building out at Circuit of the Americas look truly amazing from what I've seen so far. The Skateboard Park competitors have what essentially looks like a massive concrete, above-ground pool to skate in. And Stadium Trucks drivers are racing on a track that looks like a piece of desert in the middle of a concrete jungle. Whatever the setting, I'm sure the Texas Athletes at X Games will rule.

Killer Bees Are Upon Us

Sat, 31 May 2014 22:04:22 +00002014-05-31T22:04:22Z

The killer bees from South America seemed like an urban myth when I was a kid. No one knew when or if they'd actually arrive in Texas. But guess what? They're here!

What's Your Favorite Breakfast Joint?

Sat, 31 May 2014 21:59:14 +00002014-05-31T21:59:14Z

My favorite used to be Trudy's, but I don't understand what's going on with their hours lately. Most locations are open only in the evenings now, except for weekends. I'm sorry, but my migas cravings sometimes need to be satisfied on a weekday morning.

6th Street Safety

Sat, 31 May 2014 21:55:33 +00002014-05-31T21:55:33Z

The recent videos of fist fights on 6th Street have been a little unsettling, but the area is still remarkably safe. Virtually all of the brawls have occurred around closing time, so it might be a good idea to be long gone by then.

Have a Meaty Father's Day

Sat, 31 May 2014 21:50:50 +00002014-05-31T21:50:50Z

I have many vegan and vegetarian friends, and I love all sorts of animals, so I periodically wrestle with the issue of whether or not I should become a vegetarian. After the first time I visited Fogo de Chao, I postponed that decision for a long while.

My First Visit to COTA

Sat, 31 May 2014 21:45:20 +00002014-05-31T21:45:20Z

I recently attended a media orientation session for the upcoming X Games at the Circuit of the Americas track. After I drove onto the property, the guy at the gate told me to drive into tunnel 2. Am I going underground, I thought? No, it was just sort of an opening between the stands, but the track and the surrounding grounds are huge! I had no idea.

Go Local or Go Home

Wed, 30 Apr 2014 22:11:45 +00002014-04-30T22:11:45Z

(image) Austin has a long history of fanatically supporting local businesses: Threadgill's, Chuy's, Amy's Ice Creams, P. Terry's, Sandy's Hamburgers. Some of them, such as Chuy's and Whole Foods, have expanded far beyond Austin's borders.

Ping Pong Comeback

Wed, 30 Apr 2014 22:04:18 +00002014-04-30T22:04:18Z

I was the ping pong champ of my block as a kid. At least that's how I remember it. I was small and fast, and I practiced a lot because we had our own table. It was crammed into a room that was barely big enough for the table, so my skills were mostly focused on staying very close to the playing surface.
