Tue, 27 May 2014 09:00:33 +00002014-05-27T09:00:33Z

Amsterdam Architecture: The Tower on the Corner

Mon, 12 May 2014 09:00:56 +00002014-05-12T09:00:56Z

This week, we'll revisit some landmarks preserved from Amsterdam's medieval city wall, which represent the oldest secular architecture in the city. The Schreierstoren, a former defensive tower in the city wall, was so called because it sat on a corner (archaic Dutch schrei) of the wall; in time, its name because popularly misconstrued as the "Weeper's Tower", thanks to the similarity of schrei 'corner' with Dutch schreien 'to cry'. Find out more about this misunderstood tower on Amsterdam Travel.
