Changes and an offering . . .

Changes and an Offering . . .
Happy New Year! I trust that 2015 will be a year like many others - full of challenges and blessings, comings and goings, beginnings and endings. May we all have the capacity and wherewithal to handle it all with grace, compassion and presence.

Notice that I changed the name of my blog to Mindful Meanderings? I found the Body Prompts context too limiting for the range of topics that are on my mind and in my heart. That being said:

Touching the Heart of Love

Touching the Heart of Love
Last November my Dad took my Mom to the hospital for what seemed to be a minor problem that resulted in a downward spiral for both my parents. Mom was in and out of the hospital, finally going to rehab because she was so very weak. She never regained her strength and ended up in full nursing care on plenty of pain meds to keep her comfortable. Dad would not and could not reconcile being away from her - mind you, she was only a couple of halls away - he could not stop grieving the loss of living together. He wept constantly; turned belligerent and unyielding; was confused and unable to think clearly.

Resistance Is Futile

Resistance Is Futile
For as long as I can remember, I have had an undercurrent of pain that flows wide and deep through my life. Sometimes it flows swift and hard, other times it softly meanders – but it is always there. I have hated it, loved it, sat in it, avoided it, embraced it, controlled it, identified myself as it, distracted myself from it, judged myself for it, used it, agreed with it, argued with it, resisted it . . . suffered it.

Happy, Healthy Body
In a recent Yamuna® newsletter, the founder of Body Rolling spoke of an interview where she was asked how she defines a beautiful body. She gave a dynamic and thoughtful response. I found her words inspiring and important and want to share them with you . .

Who Do You Want to Be?

Who Do You Want to Be?
Have you ever been in a situation where it seemed justified to act like a horse’s pa-toot? You know, those situations where someone is being completely out-of-line, obnoxious, rude, unkind, insensitive, bullying . . . so much so that you feel justified in being a horse’s pa-toot right back at them. This can be as minor as someone cutting you off in traffic or a full-on battle with a spouse. I’ve had several of these situations come up recently and boy did I want to react in-kind – and no one would have faulted me for it. They deserved it - right?

A Tribute

A Tribute
The article below was written (and first published) in 2009. Up to that point I had always attributed my fierce independence to my Dad, which is only half the story. Through interviewing my Mom, diving deep into this moment in her life, I was able to see her more clearly.

Resilience
A last minute change in plans, a canceled meeting, a postponed phone call, a friend that doesn’t show up or shows up without notice, a class gets canceled, a deadline is changed, you show up for a meeting to find that it started an hour ago, the weather is uncooperative, your normal route home is closed, your spouse is late for dinner . . .

No Bullying Allowed!

No Bullying Allowed!
Usually when we think of bullying, we think about kids being picked on, shoved around, made fun of, criticized, intimidated, humiliated, beat up. There are big campaigns, movements and special anti-bullying days and weeks to educate people and to attempt to stop this behavior. That’s all good. Self-bullying is a much more pervasive and destructive form of this tendency . . .

Steady On

Steady On
Being a two-legged human being is quite the balancing act. There have been many hikes on uneven terrain where I wished for four legs instead of two! Not that I don’t enjoy being upright, having arms and hands with opposable thumbs (miracle!) – I do! But two legs come with a unique set of challenges, and maintaining balance is definitely one of them.
