#585: April and the Extraordinary World / Songs from the Second Floor

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:25:09 +0000

Comic artist Jacques Tardi is little known in the U.S but revered in his native France. His expressionistic, historical graphic novels are the inspiration for the new animated film APRIL & THE EXTRAORDINARY WORLD, which just opened in limited release. Adam and Josh review, plus preview the Chicago Critics Film Festival and discuss the first film in their Contemporary Nordic Cinema Marathon – Swedish director Roy Andersson's SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR.

#584: Captain America: Civil War / 2016 Summer Movie Preview / Keanu

Thu, 05 May 2016 15:06:20 +0000

Even if you’re a comic book fan, it’s possible that you’re feeling some Marvel movie fatigue. But one of the surprising things about the dozen or so films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that two of the best films in the mega-franchise are Captain America movies. Maybe make that three. Adam and Josh review the shield-wielding patriot’s CIVIL WAR and ask their Top 5 Summer Movie Questions. Plus, some thoughts on Key and Peele's KEANU and a bonus JUNGLE BOOK review.

#583: Green Room / Top 5 Single Location Films

Fri, 29 Apr 2016 05:00:00 +0000

When they finally get around to making Filmspotting: The Movie, it will be eligible for a future revisit of this week’s Top 5: Single Location Films. Maybe Adam and Josh can convince Jeremy Saulnier to direct. Call it "Beige Studio." That top 5, plus a review of Saulnier's GREEN ROOM, Massacre Theatre and Adam and Josh finally close the book on Filmspotting Madness 2016 with results from the impossibly close third-place contest between Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese.

#582: Alien / Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room) / FS Madness Champion

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 05:23:17 +0000

Fans celebrated Back to the Future Day on Oct. 21, 2015, the date Doc, Marty and Jennifer traveled to from 1985. In that same spirit, fans of the ALIEN franchise have marked a movie date of their own. Taking inspiration from LV-426, the ex-moon where the crew of the Nostromo first encounter the famous xenomorph, April 26th has been deemed 'Alien Day.' We honor the occasion with a Sacred Cow review of Ridley Scott's 1979 classic. Plus, a conversation with GREEN ROOM writer/director Jeremy Saulnier, and the 2016 Filmspotting Madness champion is crowned.

#581: Everybody Wants Some!! / Top 5 Linklater Scenes / FS Madness Final

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 04:09:24 +0000

Richard Linlaker’s last film was an ambitious Best Picture nominee that landed on just about every critic's 2014 Top 10 list. That was BOYHOOD. The trailer for his latest would have you thinking that it's a dumb sex comedy (not that there's anything wrong with that). Adam and Josh consider Linklater's 80s-set EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! and look for signs of the Tao of Linklater among the beer, babes and baseball. Plus, their Top 5 Linklater Scenes and the championship round of Filmspotting Madness.

#580: Midnight Special / May Marathon #4 - Ishtar / FS Madness: Final 4

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 05:00:00 +0000

Beloved by critics (including Adam and Josh), filmmaker Jeff Nichols made a bid for popular success in 2012 with MUD. But when MUD didn’t catch on with audiences, Nichols-watchers had to wait four long years for his return. Now he's back with MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, a Spielberg-meets-STARMAN sci-fi family drama starring Nichols regular Michael Shannon. Adam and Josh review, plus the Filmspotting Madness Final Four and some thoughts on the much-maligned ISHTAR, the final film in their Elaine May Marathon.

Filmspotting Fix: Anomalisa

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 06:00:00 +0000

One of the most acclaimed movies of 2015 tells the story of an ordinary encounter between two strangers in an ordinary Cincinnati hotel room. Less ordinary? They’re puppets. ANOMALISA, written and co-directed by Charlie Kaufman is an unusual – and ambitious – stop-motion animated film from the creator of SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK. In this special fix edition of Filmspotting, Adam and Josh review ANOMALISA and note the passing of legendary cinematographers Haskell Wexler and Vilmos Zsigmond.

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 06:00:00 +0000

The 2015 box office has been dominated by the usual spectacle – JURASSIC WORLD, THE AVENGERS and now THE FORCE AWAKENS – but there is less consensus than usual on the best films of the year. Based on a true story and made in the same decade as Hitchcock masterpieces "Strangers on a Train," "Rear Window" and "Vertigo," 1956's THE WRONG MAN with Henry Fonda is an often overlooked title in the Hitchcock filmography – as it was until recently by Adam and Josh, who discuss for this special Blindspotting prelude to Adam's conversation with HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT director Kent Jones and their Top 5 Film Books.

#552: Mistress America / Top 5 Desert Island Directors (Revisited)

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 05:00:00 +0000

Of current actor-director combos, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are significant for their writing partnership – and for Gerwig’s impact on Baumbach’s choice of subjects. Since hooking up with the 32 year-old Gerwig, Gen-Xer Baumbach has started training his eye on 20-something millennials – first in 2012’s "Frances Ha" and with the new MISTRESS AMERICA. Adam and Josh review Baumbach and Gerwig's latest, and revisit their Top 5 Desert Island Directors.

#551: The Look of Silence / Top 5 Haunted Past Movies / M:I - Rogue Nation

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 05:00:00 +0000

With 2012's ACT OF KILLING, director Joshua Oppenheimer delivered one of the most acclaimed, innovative - and harrowing - documentaries in recent memory. His follow-up, THE LOOK OF SILENCE, is less formally ambitious, but returns Oppenheimer to familiar territory – Indonesia's bloody anti-Communist purge that left hundreds of thousands dead in the mid-1960s. Adam and Josh review "Silence," give last week's director/muse poll another shot, and revisit their Top 5 Haunted Past Movies.

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 05:30:20 +0000

Since his death in 2008 at age 46, a kind of cult has developed around writer David Foster Wallace. For proof, look no further than the existence of THE END OF THE TOUR, the Sundance hit starring Jason Segel as Wallace, along with Jesse Eisenberg as Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky. The film – from SPECTACULAR NOW director James Ponsoldt – documents Lipsky's five-day interview with Wallace following the celebrated publication of the author’s INFINITE JEST.
