Harbinger and Holiday are 100 percent correct that the current climate in podcasting is not only unsustainable but hurts the credibility of those that are very successful in the space.

Best Practices for Internal Podcasting

Sun, 29 Jan 2017 09:00:00 -0500

In 11 years of podcasting, I have produced all kinds of content, mostly for marketing/public relations/thought leadership. But there’s another constant: internal podcasts.

We do not hear about these podcasts very often, because they are hidden behind a firewall and consumed only by employees or association members. Organizations as diverse as IBM, Whirlpool and Disney are purported to be producing podcasts for internal purposes.

Why the Conversational Power of Podcasting Is the Future of Advertising

Sun, 9 Oct 2016 13:04:24 -0400

Podcasting is the digital medium built on the power of conversation. Although undoubtedly with a genesis in the American radio tradition, there are none of the literal bells and whistles of shock-jock morning radio, nor the pressure to deliver impact in 3-minutes-or-less: Listeners are engaging with podcasts for 20, 30, 40 minutes—somtimes longer—at a time. The lack of strong scripting creates a spontaneous flow, which leads listeners to repeat these conversations to their peers, their friends and their families, creating their own versions of the discussion and making new connections.

Two proponents for each medium came together to battle it out, but in the end, both were deemed the winner.

Podcasting Studio Head Phones

Wed, 24 Aug 2016 09:00:00 -0400

Headphones can be useful while recording or editing a podcast and the right headphones can be invaluable. No matter if you are guesting on your first podcast or if you are a seasoned podcasting veteran, audio separation between the microphone and the rest of the sounds from your podcast such as co-hosts, incoming Skype calls, Blab discussions, fellow Google Hangouts on Air presenters or a soundboard are key to a clean listenable finished podcast. Monitoring your recording live also prevents many issues later including potential distorted recordings.  And of course if you are editing in even a slightly noisy environment the right headphones can make a difference between total aggravation and getting the podcast produced as accurately as possible in a timely and frustration free fashion.

Mon, 22 Aug 2016 09:00:00 -0400

Make yourself the public expert. Do not let others define who you are.

Branding is a foreign concept to most attorneys. This is true for most forms of marketing in the legal field. Attorneys simply do not have time to brand themselves, or take branding into consideration when operating their firm. Who can blame them?

Of all the mediums out there, I recommend that you use digital media and podcasting. I also recommend obtaining authorship on various publications, which ultimately makes you the go-to expert or authority for publications and media.

Best USB Microphones for Podcasting

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 09:00:00 -0400

USB microphones provide one of the easiest routes to graduate from your computer's onboard mic to something with better sound quality. Many musicians use USB microphones for at-home demoing, and more and more, these devices are being deployed in the world of podcasting. And this usage makes perfect sense: USB microphones take the standalone audio interface out of the equation for a one-and-done solution that takes up less space and is even easier to configure. The result is a plug-and-play setup that brings better, clearer sound to your podcast and eliminates the risk of warding off listeners with inaudible talking and random noises on your latest episode.

Podcasting Has an Ad Skipping Problem

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 09:00:00 -0400

Web advertisements face ad blockers. The DVR lets viewers bypass television commercials. Now, podcasts must contend with the 15-second skip button.

The decade-old podcast industry has been reawakened in the past two years as producers create new shows and more listeners tune in on their mobile devices and in their cars. Stitcher Sold

Tue, 5 Jul 2016 09:00:21 -0400

Stitcher, the platform that has helped turn millions of people into podcast lovers, has officially traded hands and now has a new owner.

The E.W. Scripps Company announced recently that it has acquired the podcast-focused company for a cool $4.5 million, which seems like a fairly low figure considering how popular Stitcher is. In fact, with over eight million registered users, that amounts to around half a dollar per user, which could be considered a deal when it comes to bulking up the total user count for Scripps. The newly-purchased service will become a part of already-established Midroll Media, which Scripps also owns, and all twelve Stitcher employees will also be brought over to the podcast advertising network as well.

This Could Be the Future of Podcasting

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 09:00:00 -0400

It also was not in the slightest bit mainstream: according to Edison Research, in 2006 only 22% of Americans were even familiar with the term podcasting, and only 11% had ever listened to one. Both numbers have slowly but steadily grown over the years (55% have heard of podcasting as of this year, and 36% have listened to one, and there actually isn’t a readily apparent ‘Serial’ bump), aided in large part by the smartphone: by removing the need to sync with iTunes it was much easier to have fresh podcasts at the ready. Still, there remained the challenge of creating compelling content, discovering content worth listening to, retaining listeners and, of course, paying for it all.

Niché No More: The Podcast Comes of Age

Fri, 24 Jun 2016 09:00:00 -0400

Here in the UK the growing cultural buzz around podcasts means now is a good time to explore how they could be monetised. Dax, known for their championing of digital audio, and media agency the7stars, have collaborated on the UKs first piece of independent research designed to explore consumers attitudes to podcasts and what commercial possibilities podcasts offer to marketers.

Strong weekly share and a young and engaged urban audience are just two opportunities podcasts offer brand owners, according to our study. In the UK, 3.6m Britons have listened to a podcast within the last four weeks and 11m podcasts are now listened to each month.

According to industry data source MIDAS, podcasts reach 7% of all audio listeners every week. And when combined with listen again/catch-up radio services, many of which include shows packaged by their makers as podcasts, the market opportunity is as big as on demand music services which currently command a weekly reach of 14% of all UK audio listeners.

Podcasting? Why Now?

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 09:00:00 -0400

Remember what you thought of podcasting when it first launched on iTunes? Have you considered it as a medium for either extending your content or aligning your brand?

While Serial’s runaway success catapulted podcasting into the mainstream, the industry has been growing and maturing into a viable promotional platform well beyond the breakout hit. More than 57 million Americans listen to podcasts each month—thats about 10% of the U.S. population, and growing at about 20% annually. Podcasts are resonating with the millennial-and-under sets and are quickly becoming the audio track to a large percentage of those generations.

Does the world need more podcasts?

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 09:00:00 -0400

Are there too many podcasts?

I do not think there is such a thing as too many podcasts. In order for a podcast to be successful they do not have to have massive listenerships. So there might be someone who wants to do a podcast about crocheting and they might be able to find sponsorship from a company that sells yarn, for example. And they might have 20,000 extremely devoted  listeners who listen to the podcast and then go buy that yarn.
