Sat, 8 Apr 2017 09:00:00 -0400About a year ago we asked whether or not podcasting can finally make money. That’s settled: It is. Today, the money is enough to make a few people rich but not enough yet to register in the global economy. Still, every year, the medium grows, largely driven by shows that get people talking, and podcasts are not even easy to play in cars yet.

Wed, 29 Mar 2017 09:00:00 -0500You might be asking how podcasts are different from radio shows. On a podcast, you will often hear information and music that you usually can not find anywhere else. They are often aimed at niche audiences. Though some podcasts are distributed live like radio shows, many are not. They are recorded for later listening, or added to a listening queue on Soundcloud, iTunes, or other syndications, making for a completely different kind of listening experience.

Podcasting, or audio blogging as it was called in the early days, has been around since the 1980s but took off with the rise of the iPod and versatile MP3 audio format. Since then, podcasting remains on the rise. According to Mother Jones, a third of the podcasts listed on iTunes appeared after 2014, and according to an Edison Research survey, 21 percent of Americans reported listening to podcasts monthly in 2016, up from 17 percent in 2015. The popularity of podcasts has grown for a variety of reasons.

Mon, 23 Jan 2017 21:59:16 -0500AirPods are on the naughty and the nice lists. Susie loves the build quality, the sound, even how they look like funky alien earrings. Tue, 29 Nov 2016 09:00:00 -0400How do you write about podcasts? This is a question that has been vexing me for almost as long as I have been listening to them. To be more precise: for nine years, because that is how long it is since I first pressed play on one.
Sun, 27 Nov 2016 09:00:00 -0400Does it make sense for The Times to be directing its talent and money toward podcasts when newsroom cuts are imminent and every position is precious? If you buy into the prevailing in-house theory, the answer to that question is yes. Audio is part of the future because it attracts young people who aren’t typically Times subscribers. So the idea is to lure them with free podcasts, with the hope of getting them to take paid subscriptions.
Fri, 25 Nov 2016 09:00:01 -0400A professional podcast requires a professional host. Mon, 21 Nov 2016 09:00:00 -0400NPR has the equivalent of a podcast testing lab that is now starting to reap huge financial dividends. For instance, the media organization late last year wanted to launch a new politics podcast, so it pitted a week-in-review concept versus a controversial/shocking programming idea on NPR One, its streaming news and podcast app. Results trickled in, akin to a classic A/B split test, and a podcast called NPR Politics was born.

ESPN is right in the middle of the action, some would say they are leading the podcasting charge. At a Radio Show panel on Wednesday, Keller said in August ESPN’s 47 shows were downloaded 54 million times, and he expects that number to be over 60 million in September. Sun, 9 Oct 2016 13:04:24 -0400Podcasting is the digital medium built on the power of conversation. Although undoubtedly with a genesis in the American radio tradition, there are none of the literal bells and whistles of shock-jock morning radio, nor the pressure to deliver impact in 3-minutes-or-less: Listeners are engaging with podcasts for 20, 30, 40 minutes—somtimes longer—at a time. The lack of strong scripting creates a spontaneous flow, which leads listeners to repeat these conversations to their peers, their friends and their families, creating their own versions of the discussion and making new connections.
Fri, 7 Oct 2016 10:37:53 -0400The Internet has made spreading faith significantly easier. Fri, 9 Sep 2016 09:00:00 -0400While some of those dollars will likely be new to audio, a big chunk of them will also come from that other platform with well established listener metrics: Radio.
Wed, 7 Sep 2016 09:00:00 -0400I have been consistently producing and editing a podcast for a tad more than eleven years, and like most podcast producers, I listen to more than a few podcasts. Wed, 24 Aug 2016 09:00:00 -0400Headphones can be useful while recording or editing a podcast and the right headphones can be invaluable. No matter if you are guesting on your first podcast or if you are a seasoned podcasting veteran, audio separation between the microphone and the rest of the sounds from your podcast such as co-hosts, incoming Skype calls, Blab discussions, fellow Google Hangouts on Air presenters or a soundboard are key to a clean listenable finished podcast. Monitoring your recording live also prevents many issues later including potential distorted recordings. And of course if you are editing in even a slightly noisy environment the right headphones can make a difference between total aggravation and getting the podcast produced as accurately as possible in a timely and frustration free fashion.

Wed, 17 Aug 2016 09:00:00 -0400USB microphones provide one of the easiest routes to graduate from your computer's onboard mic to something with better sound quality. Many musicians use USB microphones for at-home demoing, and more and more, these devices are being deployed in the world of podcasting. And this usage makes perfect sense: USB microphones take the standalone audio interface out of the equation for a one-and-done solution that takes up less space and is even easier to configure. The result is a plug-and-play setup that brings better, clearer sound to your podcast and eliminates the risk of warding off listeners with inaudible talking and random noises on your latest episode.
