SDR-1000 Setup Assistance

Fri, 11 Oct 2013 15:18:16 GMT

I recently got an SDR-1000 with an FA-66 sound card. I have downloaded and followed all the instructions, I think. I have a docking station for my Thinkpad T61 that has a parallel port. I have a cable that has all the 25 pins connected through.

When I try to start up PowerSDR 2.5.3 or 2.4.4, I get error messages (e.g. "High SWR") and no spectrum. One message says something about the transmit filter settings is out of range. I have tried the following:

1. Went into Device Manager and found the Printer Port (LPT1). In "Properties," found “Resources” and noted the “I/O Range” setting. Copied this down and used it in the PowerSDR parallel port setup.
2. Installed vv1.18.6 and install it. Someone said it installs something needed by the newer versions.
3. Went into the bios and set the parallel configuration to ECP.
4. Tried downloading "PortMon," but it shows no activity.

How can I get the parallel port working and how can I tell that it is working?

Apart from the printed SDR-1000 manual, do you have step by step instructions for the parallel port setup?

Tracking Notch Filter

Fri, 16 Aug 2013 12:32:37 GMT

The tracking notch filter is very effective once it is set.

How does one make fine adjustments to the width and center frequency of a filter?

I have expanded the display and zoomed in as much as I can.

Width - When I left click on the filter, and want to make a small width adjustment (say from 20 Hz to 25 Hz), generically the "expanded display" pops up (in 1 second), and then I am unable to adjust the width. If I am fast enough to successfully get the width adjusted, I have moved the center frequency of the filter.

Center Frequency - Even on the "expanded display" pop-up, moving the slider left and right to adjusts the center frequency in steps of 8 or 10 Hz - it seems to vary.

Has anyone else encountered this issue?

I am thinking a pop-up window that allows the user to manually enter text to change the settings would be nice.

Squelch slider movement

Sun, 11 Aug 2013 01:22:13 GMT

I have a similar issue to one already posted in March, but still without a reply.

The earlier issue stated "Flex 5000A Anyone have any idea why the squelch slider has a habit of self adjustment? This is without the squelch button activated. This is not the squelch level display, only the slider. I'm running PowerSDR 2.5.3, but it did the same on earlier versions. It doesn't affect anything, but I'm puzzled as to why it happens".

In my case - I think I am describing the same issue - as I scan across the band, the squelch slider moves by itself (even if the squelch is OFF), as if to indicate that a previous squelch setting on a particular frequency is remembered by SDR. But of course what squelch was set on an earlier occasion has no relevance to what setting is appropriate for today's band condition.

Is it true that SDR will remember the squelch setting from a previous occasion, and if so, how can I "clear all squelch settings" across an entire band.

So, in short, why does my slider move by itself. How do I stop it from doing this?

Peter - Sydney.

Frozen FlexControl Knob

Sat, 22 Jun 2013 19:28:33 GMT

[b]I recently purchased a brand new Flex 1500 radio with FlexControl. Unfortunately the tuning knob began binding shortly after I received my shipment. Now it has gotten very hard to turn and it won't smoothly change frequencies on the radio. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so, how did you overcome it? I think I need to return the FlexControl for a replacement.

USB Headset and Flex ......

Sun, 02 Jun 2013 08:44:15 GMT

Have asked this also in the german Flexradio forum but no responde.

I have buyed a USB PC Headset to work with the Flex. All Signals from and to the headset are o.K and it has a great Audio. But there is a latancy Problem. Not a big Problem in SSB but if i try CW and use the Headset there is a difference between the monitor tone from the transceiver and the monitor tone wich comes over the headset. Have installed Asio4all drivers and using Windows WDM-KS in the PSDR setup that i cane use Lateny < 120 ... 0 is the lowest latency but it´s to high for using CW. I have problems with clean CW when the tone comes later than the paddleaction.

Anybody a USB headset at work and have an idea how to eleminate those latency ???? ;);)

Using an autotuner with PSDR and VSPE - anyone done it?

Sun, 26 May 2013 12:02:08 GMT

I posted a response in the Flex-1500 forum in response to another posters question. I said I didn't know if it worked but realize that someone MAY have done it, so here is the question:

Let's say you have a brand specific auto-tuner that reads the CAT setup on your rig and pretunes the antenna so you don't have to transmit. Now here's where I want to know if you've done THIS. Have you used VSPE and set up a 1 to many port where your computer puts out the CAT signal from PSDR to a real Com port and you have taken this com port / CAT signal and fed it to your autotuner and this sets up your tuner without having to transmit?

Notebook batteria TOSHIBA pa3817u-1brs

Fri, 24 May 2013 01:53:05 GMT

Tune Step, keyboard shortcut?

Wed, 30 Jan 2013 15:08:43 GMT

Is there a keyboard shortcut to cycle through the Tuning Steps?

Is there a way to program the Griffen Knob, so when I turn it, it cycles through the tuning steps?

CPU use

Tue, 20 Sep 2011 15:01:03 GMT

Since installing PowerSDR 2.2.3 on my newly formatted PC and Flex 3000 that previously ran the previous version at 12-25% it now runs at 80-100% and is stalling and stuttering, has any one experienced this issue. My other PC much lowered spec (Also newly installed), is running at around 45-50% with my Flex 1500 with 2.2.3
System Spec
Flex 3000
Intel Core 2 Quad 6600
4 Gb fast ram
System drive 60 Gb Crucial SSD
Software drive 500 Gb Sata
Onboard firewire
Complete new install Win 7 Ultimate 64
V2.0.19 12-25% cpu use V2.2.3 80-100%

Flex 1500
AMD athlon 64 x2
2 Gb ram
500 Gb HD
Complete new install Win 7 Ultimate 64
V2.0.19 45-50% no problems

Previously with 2.0.19 i ran both radios, tv software, email and web browsing at the same time and never ever got near 80% cpu usage, now with dedicated PC's for both radios the "High Spec" one will not run 2.2.3, the radios even run better on my Samsung N150 550 atom netbook. Any ideas from experienced users?

Grounding a notebook computer.

Sun, 06 Jan 2013 23:23:26 GMT

The instructions for the Flex 1500 say to ground the 1500 to the computer. I have a common ground in the shack. I will be grounding the Flex 1500 to that common ground. However, my notebook computer power supply does not have the third (ground) pin.

Should I worry about this?

Can (or should) I plug in a USB cable and then connect its pin 4 (Ground) to the common ground?

Apple MAC Mini Computer

Sun, 17 Mar 2013 07:15:03 GMT

[b]I am a FLEX 5000A user, my question is since I have now shifted from Windows Operation systems to the Apple OS X Mountain Lion operating system, I was wondering if there are any of the FLEX SDR users operate the 5000A with the Apple MAC Mini. This computer has a Firewire 800, Thunderbolt Port and Intel Core i5 operating core. Also, was wondering if the new FLEX 6500 SDR Software would run on the OS X Mountain Lion platform.

Distortion on my 3000 Wave file link provided.

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 22:06:22 GMT

This is my Flex-3000 This is an example of the distortion I can not get rid of after owning it for just under a month. I bought this from Flex.
You are listening to a Electro Voice RE20 plugged directly into the mic jack on the Flex. I can plug any of my mic's into the Flex, and use their respective TX profiles. And I get the same result
The first phrase is into a dummy load with 3 watts. The second phrase is into my dipole with 100 watts. The receiver is a Kenwood TS-950S. I set the audio chain up with Rob's W1AEX excellant information from his web page.
Your comments are appreciated.

Intermittent audio noise in any carrier mode

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 09:17:44 GMT

Running a Flex-5000 under Win 7 64 bit I-5 processor. Everything has been fine for the last 2+ years. I recently upgraded PowerSDR to 2.5.3 and when I transmit in either the AM or FM modes, I get a very intermittent clicking in the transmit audio. It almost sounds like it could be going into a little RF feedback but even running extremely power power into a dummy load it does this. The audio on SSB is absolutely perfect ... everything works great there. It is only the AM & FM modes where I have the problem.

I didn't notice the problem before I upgraded PowerSDR but it might have been there then.

FLEX-1500 - No audio from headphone jack

Tue, 23 Oct 2012 10:07:03 GMT

I don't have any audio from the headphone jack on my FLEX-1500.

- Mixer Settings are OK (Output --> Phones --> checked & level to max. Mute All Outputs OFF)
- Using a stereo 1/8" jack/headphone... no audio
- Connected to computer audio in port... no audio

Audio is OK through the VAC/USB port

Is there a "pico fuse" or something inside the F-1500 that would mute the RX audio from the headphone jack?

5k Both VFO show Out of Band

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 12:26:56 GMT

I have a problem with my new 5K and PSDR 2.5.3. When I switched on this evening, both VFOs are showing 'Out of Band' no matter which band is selected and when the frequency is clearly in band. This has only happen this evening. It was fine this morning.
Anyone know what might have caused this and how it can be corrected? I've tried the obvious of rebooting and powering down/up.

What are the shifting numbers at the lower right of the display?

Mon, 04 Feb 2013 18:18:08 GMT

Can't find it anywhere in the manual. Are these numbers measuring the I/Q balance or some such? Chuck

Using Flex 3000 with 2 different versions of power SDR, firmware updared

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 22:03:21 GMT

I migrate my Flex 3000 between two computers for fixed and mobile operation, and right now both are running the same version of pSDR (v2.2.3 in this case). If I update to a Windows 7 (64) machine and load pSDR2.4.4 or pSDR 2.5.3, which will update the Flex firmware (and change to the new Firewire drivers), will I have a problem if I then move my Flex 3000 back to my Toshiba laptop WinXP SP2 which is still running pSDR v2.2.3? (For some other reasons, I prefer to not have to put SP3 on my laptop.) Or more generally, what versions of pSDR work with what firmware version; and is the FireWire driver an issue? I'd like to figure this out before I start down this path. Thanks.

I believe i have VAC setup correctly as DM780 can decode psk31 just fine

Fri, 18 Jan 2013 00:05:30 GMT

But i can't seem to hear it on the speakers of my pc. Should i be able to? is there a trick to that?

Flex5000 Band Database Question

Thu, 10 Jan 2013 19:49:52 GMT

Good Evening!

I just installed the latest PowerSDR v2.5.3 on a new computer. I then went through the procedures for setting up my Flex 5000. Everything went well and the system operates as expected. However, on 80 meters I am getting an "Out of Band" message when I am not out of the band (3.700 for example). This does not happen on the other bands, in fact they all read correctly. Somehow I have managed to corrupt a few fields in the database. Is there an easy way to fix this? I did search the knowledge-base but did not find anything helpful.

All the best,

Chris Moller, K3CCM

Driver Error : Device is not accesible

Sun, 06 Jan 2013 17:38:31 GMT

I was having choppy receive audio on Flex 3000 using the built in FW port of Dell Laptop
Flex support suggested that it maybe the FW itself, in my laptop

So I purchased a new Firewire card:
This is the same card with TI XIO2200 Chipset :
(Please see under best connectivity) as recommended by Flex

I installed this new card and Win 7 64bit recognizes the card.

However now the FlexRadio firewire driver (DPC checker) says i don't have any hardware installed
The radio is powered up and running.

The error I get:
Driver error: Device is not accessible
Check the driver configuration or device connection

Along with a new FW card i am also using the god 6 pin (both ends) FW cable

As a test, i switch to the built in firewire port on Dell Laptop
I start the DPC checker and it problem
I am using a 6pin to 4pin FW cable as my laptop FW is 4pin port

Any suggestions?

PSDR Tuning Step Doubles

Mon, 31 Dec 2012 10:09:09 GMT

Since updating to ver 2.5.3 I have noticed an occasional undocumented feature in PSDR, at least while using my 1500 and FlexControl. When "tune step" is set to any value, rotating the knob tunes in TWICE the step value. So, with 50 Hz selected, I get 100 Hz steps.

Doesn't always happen, doesn't seem band/mode specific. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

73 & Happy New Year,

Choppy receive audio

Thu, 27 Dec 2012 19:45:19 GMT

I just installed PSDR 2.5.3 on a new Dell Latitude E5320 laptop (i7, 4 core, 8GB RAM) running Win 7 64bit
After i hit the START button, i get choppy Rx audio within 15 to 20 secs of tunning in a clear and loud station

I am running a buffer of 2048 (under Setup, DSP, Options) and processor priority as high (not real time) (under Setup, general, options)
I have also tried a buffer of 4096
Also Safemode 2 is being used.

What am i missing here?

How to TX a Pre Recorded CQ Message?

Sun, 23 Dec 2012 12:19:03 GMT

I´m trying to figure out how those recording functions work. Until now I was able to record and playback signals for reports purposes in the front panel REC/PLAY buttons, and even a message in the WAVE menu which is transmitted if I hold down the PTT. But I want to have a CQ message just like I used to have in the Yaesu FT-950 and with just a hit of a button it will play back which I´m sure is hiding somewhere.

Can´t find anything in the manual. Someone can give me a help on this?

Can´t activate the VOX check box in Flex-3000

Sun, 09 Dec 2012 18:15:32 GMT

I´m new with Flex radios. I just bought a Flex-3000 and I tried to activate the VOX option check in the Audio Menu but even not being grey, I can´t check it. Any suggestion or idea why this is not available?

Thank you!

PK-232 and Flex-5000

Sun, 30 Aug 2009 09:56:17 GMT

I am trying to connect a PK-232 TNC to a Flex-5000A. According to the PK-232 manual, the PTT line is puts out a positive or negative voltage ("+/- Push-To-Talk (PTT) (+25 / - 40 VDC)"). But of course the PTT connector on the back of the radio is expecting a switch to provide a short. These do not seem compatible... Should I be using a relay or maybe a transistor here?

Short beep meaning ?

Sun, 30 Sep 2012 18:22:03 GMT

I'm finally going to ask about an occasional short, middle frequency beep I hear coming from my Flex 5000 at apparently random times. Sometimes I don't hear it for hours and sometimes I'll hear a couple within three or four minutes of each other. It doesn't affect anything as far as I can tell, and I haven't been able to find anything about it in the manual or in the forums.

Can anyone enlighten me?

FlexControl and Windows 8 Pro x64 - Crashes USB???

Wed, 28 Nov 2012 20:21:57 GMT

I need some help. While running PowerSDR 2.4.x with my Flex-1500 in Windows 7 Pro x86, I was encountering USB crashes upon reboot (BSOD). As it wasn't catastrophic it didn't bother me.

Move forward many months and I now rebuilt my computer and it's running Windows 8 Professional x64. Everything installed properly until I got to FlexControl. Although it works, I now encounter the same USB crash whenever the computer reboots (new "friendlier" BSOD LOL). I confirmed this by unplugging the FlexControl and no more USB crashes on reboot.

As this was probably the cause of the BSOD in Win 7 Pro x86, it looks like it is also the same with Win 8 Pro x64.

I have more USB3.0 ports than USB2.0 so I added a 7-port USB2.0 expansion. At this time, the Flex-1500 is direct to the computer while the FlexControl was in the USB2.0 hub (only FlexControl and Microsoft HD camera are connected to the hub. I rebooted after uninstalling the camera drivers and unplugging it but the USB crash continued).

BTW, if I connected the Flex-1500 to a USB3.0 port, it refused to be recognized although it is supposed to be backwards compatible (go figure?)

One last note... I have NOT installed VAC or any other virtualization software yet (I was using VAC in Win 7)

Any ideas???

Bose speaker choices?

Sun, 27 Jan 2008 06:18:33 GMT

I'm considering speaker choices for the new 5000a, and note that the
Bose Companion 2 is on the list at

The Bose box says "TruSpace stereo processing circuitry adds spaciousness."

Would this do anything to mono audio from the 5000a, to 'simulate'
stereo? (I would like to find the technical details and be able to turn this

The Bose ad says:

> > Proprietary TrueSpace® stereo signal processing circuitry Creates a
> > wide stereo soundstage designed for computer listening, enabling
> > fuller enjoyment of music, movies and games.

I wonder if any of the other speakers on your list have circuits like this.

I would rather have conventional speakers than something that tries to
'simulate' stereo.

The Bose Companion 2 is on sale this weekend and I would like to sort
this out.

6000 Series TX Relays

Anyone know if the TX relays on the 6000 series will provide floating contact closures, or will they take the center pin of the RCA to ground?

Will LOGic (Logging software) run with PowerSDR / Flexradio ??

Does it work proper (i.e. automatic fill in the frequency etc)?

Problem with loading Flex 3000 Drivers.

Wed, 24 Oct 2012 18:58:53 GMT

I am hoping someone can help me with loading PSDR 2.4.4. I'm running windows 7 home premium. I have tried several time to load PSDR 2.4.4 with no luck. the install goes well until after the reboot. I wait aprox. 1 min. and turn the radio on. the install gets to where it is loading the drivers and then says drivers not installed properly. I go to device manager and the radio shows up there but there are no drivers listed. Is there anyway to load the drivers manually?

I have uninstalled everything rebooted and reinstalled still the same thing. I'm at a loss here not sure what is going on. Any help would be great. Thanks!

I have found the answer myself. It helps if you read the other posts. Legacy drivers.
