Google Adwords Secrets

Getting More Blog Readers and Twitter FollowersOf people who both blog and tweet, the majority would overwhelmingly prefer to have more blog readers than followers on Twitter. This is according to surveys conducted by Darren Rowse who runs ProBlogger and TwiTip. Would you prefer more blog readers or Twitter followers? Tell us.This is not entirely surprising, since generally, much more effort is put into a blog post than a 140-character or less tweet, but there is certainly a gold-rush for Twitter followers. Jason Calacanis for one is willing to pay a pretty penny for them. Rowse polled both his ProBlogger audience (which is presumably comprised mainly of bloggers) and his Twitip audience (which is made up of Twitterers). As expected, the Twitip crowd favored Twitter followers slightly more, but there was still a very clear majority wanting more blog readers. Rowse provides the following graphs:There are certainly arguments for the value of both categories, and Rowse covers them pretty well here. There are some pretty obvious ones for blogs:- they require more time/effort - they provide more info- they are most likely not going anywhere, while Twitter may be hot right now, but who knows where it will be in the future?- the more blog readers you have, the more times your posts are likely to be linked to on Twitter anywayThere are obvious benefits to having Twitter followers too though, particularly for marketers.- More followers is a good indication that there is demand for what you offer as a business, and that people are interested in your product(s)- relationships easier to form (yes blogs have comments, but typically not the real-time conversation factor, and people are at Twitter to talk...they're not necessarily at your blog to do so)Of course people who both blog and tweet know they don't have to choose between one medium or the other. They compliment each other, and ideally can work to each other's benefits. Twitter can gain you more blog readers, and a blog can gain you more Twitter followers. It's all in the execution. Write good content that Twitterers want to link to. This has plenty of potential for getting you more readers. Include chiclets on your posts, making it easy to share your content (this shouldn't be limited to Twitter). Include a prominent link for people to follow you on Twitter (a Twitter logo here will help draw attention). Link to good content from others when you Tweet. If people like what you're pointing them to, you'll likely gain more followers. Who would've guessed it all comes back to content? You could also mention your blog casually from time to time. This may increase awareness of it. Just because someone follows you on Twitter, does not mean they know about your blog. That said, you probably don't want to ram it down their throats either. So, blogging Twitter users, would you rather have more blog readers or Twitter followers? Tell us. Tips for using blogs & Twitter together? Share with WPN readers.Facebook Testing New Ad Format?Update: I contacted Facebook asking for more details on the testing, and I was given only the following official statement from the company:Facebook recently began testing a module that appears periodically in the right-side ad space that show relevant content in addition to the ads that would normally appear there. This content includes Facebook Pages of which a user's friends have become a fan, Events that a user's friends are attending, and people who are friends of a user's friends. While the advertisements are paid placements, the content is not, and is part of Facebook's ongoing efforts to surface relevant content and friend information in more places on the site. As with all tests, Facebook will evaluate user responses and make ongoing modifications to the features of the module.Original Article: AllFacebook's Nick O'Neill received a screenshot of what is supposedly a new advertising layout Facebook is testing that shows 5 ads instead of 3 and has a wider layout. Google Suggest Goes Worldwide

Google Suggest was released in the U.S. about seven months ago, and when it came to search terms like "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," the tool could be a helpful, allowing you to type just seven letters instead of thirty-four. And now, people outside the U.S. will also be able to benefit, with some neat region-specific twists tossed in.

Yes, if you type "superc" into the main search box of Google UK, Google Ireland, Google India, or a number of other localized versions, you'll see the full Mary Poppins word given as a suggestion. On the Official Google Blog, David Kadouch explained, "Google Suggest now covers 155 domains in 51 languages."

But the really neat part is this: "We've localized our suggestions to account for various cultural and local factors to offer suggestions that look familiar to our users."

Google Suggest

So if, for example, you type "liver" into the Google.com interface, you'll see recommendations related to various health issues. But try it with Google UK interface, and the suggestions lean towards the city in England and the Liverpool Football Club.

You can test Google Australia with "kangaroo" and Google Ireland with "pubs," too, if you please.

Although Google Suggest wasn't too impressive when it first came out, this is a fairly interesting turn of events.

Google Says It Helps Newspaper WebsitesGoogle says it does not misappropriate newspaper content and actually helps them by driving traffic to their Web sites.AlexanderMacgillivray"We drive traffic and provide advertising in support of all business models -- whether news sources choose to host their articles with us or on their own sites, and whether their business model is ad-supported or based on subscriptions," wrote Alexander Macgillivray, Google's associate general counsel for products and intellectual property, on the Google Public Policy Blog. "In all cases, for news articles we've crawled and indexed but do not host, we show users just enough to make them want to read more -- the headline, a "snippet" of a line or two of text and a link back to the news publisher's website."The blog post comes after The Associated Press announced yesterday it was working on system to protect its content from being misappropriated online.Macgillivray said some readers, journalists and users wondered if the AP's latest announcement was directed at Google."The answer is that it doesn't appear to pertain to Google since we host those articles in partnership with the AP," Macgillivray wrote."We announced that partnership in 2007 as part of an experiment in hosting articles on our site. In hosting agreements such as this, we pay news agencies and display the entire text of articles."Macgillivray went on to defend Google's actions concerning newspaper Web sites. "Once a reader is on the newspaper's site, we work hard to help them earn revenue. Our AdSense program pays out millions of dollars to newspapers that place ads on their sites, and our goal is that our interest-based advertising technology will help newspapers make more from each click we send them by serving better, more relevant ads to their readers to generate higher returns."Google maintains that its practice follows U.S. copyright law and that newspapers that disagree with fair use can ask to have their content removed from its index. Google To Eliminate 200 PositionsGoogle represented something of a bright spot during the past few months; while other tech companies made layoffs, the search giant just slowed its hiring spree. Unfortunately, Google became part of the downsizing pattern this afternoon, announcing the elimination of 200 sales and marketing positions. Omid Kordestani, Google's senior vice president of global sales and business development, didn't sound happy about the move in a post on the Official Google Blog. Kordestani wrote, "Making changes of this kind is never easy - and we recognize that the recession makes the timing even more difficult for the Googlers concerned."There are a couple of potential silver linings, though. First, from a business perspective, it may be that Google isn't suffering from the effects of the recession. Although he mentioned misleading growth trends, Kordestani claimed, "In some areas we've created overlapping organizations which not only duplicate effort but also complicate the decision-making process. That makes our teams less effective and efficient than they should be."Then, the exec - who has declined bonus payments and equity awards - promised that Google is trying to shuffle people around instead of fire them.
