Re: The Popdose Guide to Journey

Tue, 05 Jul 2011 10:13:55 -0000

I'm still very much a fan of the record, although in my heart I know it's because it was one of the first albums by the band that I ever owned. Still, as I've said elsewhere within the Popdose universe, I still think "Suzanne" remains one of Journey's greatest and most underrated pop songs.

Thanks for that. You're right, it's more likely that he's referring to Ms. Romano. But Jean MacCurdy is still awesome. :-)

Hard to really call Brian a guest on Orange Crate Art, given that the album is actually co-credited to him.

You'll get no argument from me.

Thanks! That at least explains how it came to pass. I'm still not sure why the collaboration lasted a sum total of 39 seconds, though.

He's coming to my neck of the woods later this year, and I admit that I'm kind of excited about it. I've never seen him before.

Re: Aveeno Prize Pack Giveaway

I NEED to try the Aveeno Positively Ageless Complete Starter Regimen. I just turned 41 and my skin and I are both feeling it!

The last time we needed ink, it was cheaper to buy a new printer that came with it. It seems so wasteful but money wise it was cheaper!!

Search "coupon" and the page will pop up

Re: TV on DVD: “Growing Pains: The Complete Second Season”

Fri, 29 Apr 2011 23:16:38 -0000

Screw you, man. *I* watched 'The Oldest Rookie'!

I also watched 'The George Burns Comedy Week' during the 1985 - 1986 season, but what did that get me? Same thing: nothing but goddamned heartbreak.

Re: Remembering Poly Styrene

Wed, 27 Apr 2011 12:37:17 -0000

A lovely farewell, Kelly. I'm sure there are a lot of Poly fans who would be horrified to hear that I first discovered her work via a male-fronted band singing a cover of one of her songs - the Candyskins tackled "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" as a B-side once upon a time - but, hey, it served to put X-Ray Spex on my radar, so how can you complain, really?

Re: The Popdose Interview: Luke Goss

Tue, 26 Apr 2011 18:08:40 -0000

I think Luke's a fine actor, and I certainly didn't dwell on Bros, but as that was my entry point to his work, I'm hard pressed to miss a chance to talk with him about that era at least for a moment. Plus, it's not as though I had anything disparaging to say about the music. I quite like "When Will I Be Famous?" and always have.

Re: Listmania: Never Mind The Parodies, Here’s 20 Weird Al Yankovic Originals

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 16:17:25 -0000

No argument here. You never forget your first Al album, and "In 3-D" was mine.

Re: Listmania: Never Mind The Parodies, Here’s 20 Weird Al Yankovic Originals

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 09:45:45 -0000

Yeah, I like "I'll Sue Ya," and I think "Germs," which is straight from the Trent Reznor playbook, is pretty fun, too. But what can I say? My pop sensibilities clearly come shining through in my selections.

I stand by "Twister." It's a spot-on Beastie Boys homage.

Re: Name That Tune, Game Forty-Eight

Whoops, sorry, it's #7, not #8.

Re: Name That Tune, Game Forty-Eight

Thu, 14 Apr 2011 15:11:13 -0000

Had to be that way, didn't you? My apologies: that should indeed have been Adam & The Ants. :-)

Re: Name That Tune, Game Forty-Eight

Thu, 14 Apr 2011 15:04:21 -0000

#5 - Pet Shop Boys, "Home and Dry"
#8 - Adam Ant, "Stand and Deliver" (I think)

Re: The Three Strike Rule: “The Middle”

Thu, 31 Mar 2011 23:13:32 -0000

P.S. I forwarded the link to your piece to DeAnn. Figured she'd enjoy the praise. :-)

Re: The Three Strike Rule: “The Middle”

Thu, 31 Mar 2011 23:03:40 -0000

I'll second your praise of "The Middle" as a great family show, Scott: it's literally the only live-action sitcom that Ally (who's 5) will have anything to do with.

BTW, I interviewed DeAnn Heline last year, and she's extremely nice. It's been great to watch the show continue to find its groove since our conversation:

Speaking of "Grace Under Pressure," am I the only one who gets silence when he hits "play" on "Distant Early Warning"?

Re: The Very Guest Of… Kirsty MacColl

Fri, 04 Mar 2011 15:07:50 -0000

Oh, and, yes, Kirsty *does* embiggen "Interesting Drug," now that you mention it. :-)

Re: The Very Guest Of… Kirsty MacColl

Fri, 04 Mar 2011 15:04:18 -0000

Excellent piece, Herr Medsker.

BTW, I just this second remembered that, in addition to "contributing some of the more off-the-radar songs," I'm also the one who gave you that copy of "From Croydon to Cuba." :-)

Re: The Popdose Interview: Gunnar Nelson

Fri, 11 Feb 2011 22:16:50 -0000

It's all relative, I guess, given that a lot of this stuff was going on simultaneously. But Nelson had been doing country covers back in the '50s and '60s, went full-on country for a couple of albums in '66 (with Glen Campbell and Clarence White in tow), then revisited it with the Stone Canyon Band in '71 and really set sail.

Re: The Popdose Interview: Gunnar Nelson

Fri, 11 Feb 2011 11:53:48 -0000

Wow, I'd never heard that about that Nelson / McCartney collaboration that never happened. If it's true, talk about depressing...

When Gunnar was talking about how Nelson was now in the same position that their dad had been when he started the Stone Canyon Band, I was surprised to find myself thinking, "Well, he's kind of right about that." Of course, they've arguably been in that position ever since their deal with Geffen ended, but it's still a valid parallel.
