I'm inclined to think that there was something functionally wrong with the machine in the first place--maybe a bad wire? Why don't you send an e-mail to the company and ask them if they have any ideas.
When my bread machine died, I never replaced it. I have a Kitchenaid too, and haven't tried to make bread yet. But I did make homemade pretzels last week, and it was so easy. I've been planning to make bread--all I have to do is figure out where I put the yeast I bought, LOL!
