How To Water Your Plants.

2009-10-21T18:16:30.592-07:00

Water you plants using watering can.

Watering Can
Watering plants to your garden or pots sounds an easy job. But, the fact is that, your plant will appreciate much from you if you have a little bit of knowledge in doing it correctly.

The simplest way of watering plants to your pots or garden beds is by using watering can. Watering cans, which usually have long sprout are handy for you to reach any corners or cramp area at you home small balcony or within small pots. The flexibility in usage helps many gardeners for over many thousand years.

When selecting a watering can, keep in mind that small containers require many trips to the tap. However, if you choose a larger can, it may be difficult to fit under a tap, and it's heavy when filled.

Which one would you choose?

Tips

Always remember that if you are using watering can to water plant, the roots must get wet by giving enough water to the whole plant. Wetting the top layer soil is insufficient. Give a few sprinkle, slowly to all parts of soil so that the water has tome to soak into the soil. I would recommend any gardener to get a can with strainer, or the rose sprout. This help to evenly spread the water gently.

Bear in mind not to use a watering can that can distribite weed killer. Place the can at different place and label some notes so that other chemical will be introduce to that same can.

I will post more topics on watering plants using a hose soon. Look out for that too!

Growing vegetables with raised bed.

2009-05-29T11:40:25.212-07:00

Growing an ideal vegetables garden such as lettuce, spinach or snap beans are everbody dreams. Growers who own a large yard or a garden will be able to grow anything themselves as long as it benefit them for their own kitchen.

However, those who only have a balcony or a small yard space, you can still grow your own vegetables. This can be achieve by designing or plan a proper raised bed garden to grow common vegetables such as lettuce or cabbage.

The most advantage of using raised bed in gardening is that it helps to reduce soil compaction. The plant roots get good flow of air sufficiently and drainage to excess water or moisture is much better. If you are doing your daily gardening chore, you may not able to step on the soil as it is has already raised nicely just for the plants need.

As I've said earlier, raised bed garden also helps grower with their limited space of land. For a start, you can start constructing a 2 feet by 4 feet planting bed area. Narrower bed make it easier for you to reach the plants. You can add soil by buy potting soil from your nearest garden store for the whole area of planting bed. If insufficient or too expensive, you may mix some ground soil. Disadvantage is that there might be weeds from the ground soil.

Once you have decide on the vegetable or herb seeds to plant, place and sow the seeds in a straight row. By growing in a straight rows, it is easier to tell it is your plants or weeds. In further, you just need to add fertilizer or compost as required in that area for certain amount. Excess watering will be controlled too.

In conclusion, you will experience more yield of vegetables using raised bed garden compared to ordinary ground bed. You can find more techniques and advice on gardening successfully at www.hobbyfarms.com/crops-and-gardening/default.aspx

Growing Plant Yourself

2009-04-19T07:45:08.939-07:00

By now, whoever is growing plant yourself from seeds, you found joy and lot of fun to raise the little plants yourself and watch them grow amazingly. You can grow certain species or cultivars that are hard to find as young plants by cultivating. It is more easier to grow.

Anyway growing balcony flowers from seed on your own is not a way to save money. This is so because plants that are available commercially is actually quite inexpensive.

For starting plants from seed, you need a warm, bright spot. Usually a window sill is a good choice for this. If it is possible, the best position is not to face south-facing window directly in the blazing sun because the seedlings and young plants do not tolerate such conditions well. Till the young plants growing steadily with strong stem, you can proceed or continue to place them at direct sunlight.

Seed Germination

2009-03-17T07:50:59.829-07:00

If you wish to grow any flowers, herbs or vegetables from seeds, you must understand that every seed has its own germination rate. Which means, they have different period to change to seedling.

In fact germination process will also vary according to whether it grows in the cold of mountains or the humid tropical climate. Does this mean that if I live in tropical climate country, I do not have the chance to grow lovely Lavender which needs cold temperature? Every seed has its own possible way to germinate no matter where you wish to grow them.

The best way to obtain success in germinating seed is to try to mimick the natural conditions of the seed will experience in the wild. Copying method will improve the chance, especially with seeds that are difficult or are erratic germniators.

For example, some seeds have hard cover coats that are resistant to water. Germination rate will take a longer time if you plant this seed direct to your pot or garden. One of the example is Canna seeds. Naturally in the wild, the seed coating can be broken by a sudden change in temperature or seed falling from its plat and being step by humans or animals.

To expose this seed, what you can do is to file the seed coating by rubbing rough ground or using sand-paper. This method is called Scarification.

Another way is to soak seed in the water about a week till you noticed the inner skin expose. Once the seed exposed, gently press the seed into the surface of the substrate. Either in pot or tray, let it under the white light for at least 6 -8 hours straight. Seeds need water to penetrate the outer seed coat to begin germinating process. But make sure not to overwater and keep well drain.

Methods to Improve Flowering.

2009-04-19T07:51:53.607-07:00

There are a few ways if you would like to extend the flowering period of your plants. These techniques are best practise on perennials.

Pinching out

When plants reach one-third of their height, pinch out the stem tips, to encourage sideshoots to develop.

Deadheading

Encourage more flowering shoots to develop by removing flowers as soon as they start to fade.

Cutting back

After flowering, when new shoots are visile at the base, cut back the flowered stems to the ground level.
You can remove flowers before they set seed stimulates a plant to produce more blooms. Also, thin out spindly and weak shoots. This will encourage new stems to develop from the base.

As my neighbour are Malays, they gave a few cuttings from their plant to my father to plant it behind my backyard. We did not care much of this plant actually, as it is very easy to grow either from seeds or cuttings. Now it grows as high as our second story bedroom. Photo taken from our window.A Common tropical flower plant - Lipstick plant. This plant is related with African Violets and Cape Primrose. It actually requires high humidity levels. If the leaves begin to brown and dry out or the tiny flowers turn black, the plant is not receiving enough humidity. The Lipstick Plant does best when provided with bright, indirect light. Do not allow this houseplant to be in a lot of direct sunlight. It can burn the foliage, especially in younger plants.Do you know that you can grow grapes in Malaysia too? Orchid Care

2009-04-19T18:16:46.844-07:00

My aunt has luck in propagating her orchid plant. Most orchid are suitable to grow successfully indoors. Indoor orchids are almost similar too epiphytic jungle plants. These plants receive their nutrient from the air, rain and any decaying vegetation which the roots can contact. So, what she did was to immitate the native conditions of her orchid and apply it to the surrounding at her balcony area.

The only trouble with the orchid is the soil. The soil is not allowed to remain wet or moist for more than a day or two at a time. My aunt just spray the leaves and soil once a week when the soil becomes dry.

The light requirements for orchids actually vary depending on an individual plant. Minimum requirement is four hours of sunlight. In the absence of natural sun, you can provide the necessary light with the use of flourescent 'grow' lights.

Even though my aunt has not try other varieties, she found success in planting orchid well after reading Orchid Care Expert Guide.

Portulaca Grandiflora - Moss Rose

2009-01-22T02:45:54.827-08:00

It's been hot and windy these days, I have left a few, small stalks of Portulaca on my dining table. Mine has not much variety of colours.

Portulaca Grandiflora or Moss Rose is well known for its brilliant colour flowers. I found this flower is unique as it usually blossoms fully during the day time where there is bright light or sun shines.

It is quite easy to grow Portulaca as it does not need so much attention to the soil. If you would like to grow from seeds, just sow them by scattering to any soil. Cover seeds lightly with soil. Good sunny area with lean soil is the best. It can take hot and dry places. Just water them regularly. Germination may take 2-3 weeks.

The beautiful bright flowers of Portulaca are attractive especially in rock gardens, parking strips, hanging baskets, or containers.

Growing Periwinkle

2009-01-09T14:45:49.345-08:00

Some Periwinkle has pinkish flower while others are blue. The fresh leaves spread along and creeps if you planted them in the garden. Once planted, you will find that it's small branches will trail along the ground and new roots are easily grow itself and continue to creep.

Periwinkle grows best in sun or shade, it does well too if you do not plant them in direct sun. You can grow Periwinkle in pots too. As it grows, you will see more leaves and flowers oveflowingly grow out of the pots, almost covering all the sides till the end of the pot. This plant looks unique wrapping around the pots.

Water them several times a week during very hot and sunny days. For those who grows them on the ground, remember to cut the vine between the roots. Dig the roots and place them in another part of the garden to replant. Decide first where you want to replant them.

I hope you enjoy growing periwinkle as much as I do. This plant is not only beautiful but form unique trail especially grow them in pots. Have fun!

Simply, moisten the pot of soil.

Place the pot in a bright or clear light. Sheltered sunny position is the best.

Unexpected Petunia

2009-02-14T17:41:40.827-08:00

Lovely Petunia, with charming, bright colours spreading well in a small yard.
Unfortunately, this is not my yard or garden of petunia. Last year my husband just happened to empty unlabel packet of seeds to my aunt's yard. He did not know what seed was that at first. He was just merely throwing them on her barely digged soil without her knowledge.

Actually my aunt had been calling us a few months ago wanting us to visit her again. We are so busy on those months that we hardly come back there. So, since it is a long school holiday we decided to bring our kids too for a visit. My aunt was so excited to tell us about her beautiful plant which she lately knew it's name - Petunia. She's been asking around and her grateful neighour mentioned that she had petunia garden. The mix colours of petunia bring a live to her small yard.

Plants in containers need a growing medium that is water retentive and well aerated. Potting composts (soil mixes) come in various formulations that are suitable for different plant requirements.

A standard potting compost is usually peat-based and is suitable for all purposes. This is how it looks.

However, regular watering is vital when using peat-based composts as once they are allowed to dry out completely they are very difficult to re-moisten. Different composts can be mixed together for specific plant needs.
