The End of Industrial Training

2008-08-27T20:12:31.197+08:00

Okayy... I know it has been a few ice ages ago since I last blogged but heres the thing...THERE WASNT MUCH TO TALK ABOUT AFTER THE FIRST 4 WEEKS OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING!!! WHAT THE HELL COULD I BLOG ABOUT? e.g. This week was a routine week. I went to the production line and with my trusty stopwatch and clipboard and measured the cycle time.... every day i measure the production lines cycle time.... after work i would key in this data in to Excel spreadsheets blah blah blah.... NOOOOOO I DUWAN TO WRITE A BLOG LIKE TAT!!!Ahem.... Now that i have cleared my throat a little on that issue, let me try to summarize as much as I can think about the final 7 weeks of my 11 week long industrial training.... Hmmm lemmme see.... Well there was an endless pile of spreadsheets, there was the final presentation in which for the first time in my life, i didnt know what to present in front of the whole line up of engineers on the production floor leaving them with an impression that I SUCK at presenting but the truth is there was nothing to present at all as all I did was collect data by pressing the stopwatch and recording it on paper and transferring the measured data to Excel spreadsheets, wrote my industrial training final report in the final few days there, and the last day of work was spent looking at the engine testing department giving the S80 engines a full power run and approving documents.Within the final few weeks though, there was this interesting "training" on Volvo's image rebranding which basically sums up why Volvos couldnt sell as well as Mercedes or BMWs. In this "training" we were told that Volvos problem was its brand image as it wants to be a premium car brand but couldnt seem to succeed in doing so. Failing to do so, it is sandwiched in a really unfavourable position where it in the middle of nowhere, not premium but not cheap.... A bit of a more expensive Toyota Camry price range but much cheaper than BMW. As it is not perceived as a premium car brand, it is naturally crossed off the list of cars to consider when buying a new car, as in when you buy a car, even before you think about how big of a car you want, you would first decide on whether or not to buy an expensive car, or just settle for a cheap car right? So during this decision process making, you would cross out Volvo right after you decided you wanted an expensive car as Volvos arent premium and expensive cars. And if you decide on cheap cars instead, you would still cross out Volvos as they are kind of expensive. Hence being in the middle of both classes would really put a company in a disadvantageous and even possibly dangerous market position where your products would get crossed out of the list of possible choices to consider when buying a car.For example, lets say you have RM 200,000.00 and you want to buy a car with that money. Which one you would rather have? A Toyota Camry / Honda Accord or a Volvo S40? And if you are in for expensive cars, choose between S80 (Volvos Camry sized sedan) or a BMW 3 series or a Mercedes C class. Which one would you want? This is clearly a problem for Volvo right now, hence the rebranding of its vehicles to make them more desirable and placing them in the premium car market. Lets hope Volvo succeeds as I would feel that it would be a loss to the industry if they were to lose their leader in vehicle safety innovations right?Well, here is my honest confession... I stopped taking the production line cycle times for real from the 7th week onwards.... Why? Well my cousin Fred gave me an invaluable piece of advise... "Work smart boy... Give your boss what he wants lah... Learn to work like them la.... Just enjoy your Industrial Training while it lasts". That was indeed a great piece of advise as it gave me an idea. I should make good use of my strengths la! I can visualize and imagine pretty well when it comes to moving parts i think... And I have been observing the vehicle assembly process long enough to actually imagine them assembling the car in real time quite accurately. Combining these traits, I tried measuring the cycle[...]

Week 4, another bland and simple week. More time measurement. More of the hot and humid assembly lines with no engine sub assembly in sight. And more Excel data entry. This week proved to be a very long week as it is the second week I have to endure this ceaseless boredom with out a Friday lay off day. Well, at least there IS an end in sight as my time as a trainee here is quite short indeed.

This week while i was at work at the sub assembly lines where small bits get put together in to bigger pieces of the car e.g Dashboard, Engine, Axle etc etc, I found some really nice people. They were willingly cooperating with me in my attempt to measure the cycle time of the sub assembly lines. For instance there is this uncle at the radiator sub assembly whom is in his late 40's who would tell me his cerita2 lama and do the operations step by step so that i could catch up and note it all down on the list. The mute guy and gals would also do the same and they even paused a while and pointed to me which step in the list they had just done and waited for me to write down the time and then only continuing. I wished the rest of the ppl at the assembly line.
That would help me a great deal and I would've had the complete data by now. But no~ they just did what they pleased and made life so difficult for me on the main assembly line.

To the ones who were of great help to me, I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to these nice and helpful people! YAY and now to some of the more humourous things i found during week 4 of industrial training. The following picture is the product of a "dialogue" that i had with one of the mute workers at the sub assembly line called Syafinas. Very helpful person who signalled me when she started a process and signaled me to stop the stopwatch when she is done with it and points out which item in the list was it. She asked me what I was there for and i answered that i was there to take the cycle time for the dashboard sub assembly.

(image)

She then told me that she is doing the S80 dashboard sub assembly just in case I didn't know in line 2 and then i asked her whether she is also in charge of the door panel sub assembly in line 3. In line 4 she claims that she not do work. Hmmm.... Is this the confession from a worker that she slacks off during work? Hahaha i hope not...

The following picture is a material requisition form (obviously) that my colleague asked me to send to the stockist to acquire the listed items. What instantly caught my attention was the units for the items in the list.

(image)

WD40 for those who have never heard of it or used it, is an aerosol lubricant that is sprayed to loosen rusty metal such as your pad locks, nuts and bolts. So naturally, they come in CANs right? But it seemed that my colleague got it slight wrong by determining that WD40s should be punished and "disebat" 3 kali untuk sex offense against women.

I finished the week with quite some data and am quite pleased with the nice people whom showed their invaluable cooperation to aid my data collection.

This week is the week where my industrial training got from kinda boring to BBBOOOORRRIIIINNNGGGG.........Yes its the week of boredom for me in Sweedish Motor Assemblies. On Monday i printed out a 3 inch thick stack of spreadsheets that I have painstakingly prepared throughout the first 2 weeks of my industrial training. It took me a whole damn day to print out these spreadsheets as the printer was acting up, printing only the first column and moves on to the next page to pring the next column and so on.After wasting the whole morning messing around with the printer settings and getting the print outs right, it is already time for tea break. I went up to the cafeteria to grab some "char bee hoon" and Nescafe (really sleepy waiting for the bublejet printer to get along with its business of printing) and then went to the toilet to take a leak. Out of curiosity, I ventured in to another cubicle and found some more interesting artwork done by grownups which I included in this post below for your viewing pleasure:The artist seem to have a deep liking for the female body, especially the breasts for that matter which can be seen by the art piece on your left but the poor fellow's artwork got defiled by other busybodies whom think that the picture wasnt complete and added stuff behind the female. On the right are artist impressions on what happens to breasts if they are fondled with too much and the depictions of breasts sagging along with the before and after labels show how much sagging the artist thinks breasts would undergo. This one is a horizontal view of 2 people having penetrative sex. I am unsure about who this "Zaiton" is but i have a hunch taufik here refers to the senior HR Manager in SMA.So after spending the rest of the day printing out the spreadsheets and sorting them out, it was time to staple them together. Problem was, some were more than 25 pages thicktoo thick for a normal stapler to staple together. The next problem is there aint no big staplers in the whole factory!! OMFG!! We are talking about a factory that prides itself with its ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certification here and it turns out, they did not have one of those BIG staplers that we usually c in the photocopy shops. This factory has more than 5 photo copy machines and still no sign of BFS (Big F***in Stapler)I had to resort to brute force. Went to the tool shelf and got the hammer out! Hammered the stapler quite hard to cause successful penetration and then hammer the ends of the staple down to strengthen the tie. This process is repeated 3 times in parallel direction to increase tie strength, hence creating a durable booklet to endure the ravages of the production line.In one of my trips to the office, I met up wiht my supervisor's boss (my boss oso la) and she asked me to go see her the first thing the next morning. And so i did as she told me right after morning stretching. Sadly the reason she asked me to see her was to make me photocopy the Operational Sequence Summary for 2 trucks that are going to be produced on contract here in SMA.Hence i spent the half a day by the photocopy machine and the other half of the day at the table stamping the "Controlled Document" stamp on the documents and then filing them up accordingly. After this rather unamusing day of easy labour, I continued on with the cycle time measurement for the rest of the week feeling rather lost trying to keep up with more than one person at the same station who not only does the assembly a few steps at a time, they seem to even share jobs as well making it a real mess to measure the cycletime.[...]

Second week of industrial training in KL and I was all alone at home as my causin went to Shanghai with this Girlfriend to visit his mother there. I know this is kind of late to post this but i was kinda busy over the weekend so heres the round up for week 2 of my industrial training....

My week started off as usual with my supervisor (Azril) asking me to hurry up with the OSS (Operational Sequence Summary) list that I have been painfully updating since day 2 of the training. The whole weeks worth of working days were spent in the cold but cheerful CMM (Computer Measuring Machine) room labouring away the hours as the OSS list slowly reaches completion.

This week was particularly nice as it has a public holiday (Labour's Day) as well as Friday lay-off day, hence reducing the total working days for this week to a meager 3 days of work!! WOOHOO!!! SUPER LONG WEEKEND!!!

In theory, this is supposed to be syiok giler la rite? But as it turns out it was a really taxing weekend. When I habis kerja, I made my journey home (where else la..) and when I got home, I quickly ran upstairs, flinging my bag to a side and went in to the shower. My old class mate who is still studying at Taylor's College had bought tickets to Iron Man at 8pm. Reached Sunway Pyramid at 6.30 pm and met up with him and Teoh and we had McDonalds for dinner after a lengthy, undecided, unsure and confused discussion on what to have for dinner. Used some coupons and got a free Fillet O' Fish together with my McValue BigMac... Nice and filling.....

Iron Man was nice and exceeded my expectation (was expecting the usual cheesy Marvel superhero mambo jumbo) as it turned out to be quite intresting. Hope they do not screw up the sequel though... After the movie we parted ways and I headed to Sungai Long to watch Chelsea vs Liverpool or was it MU vs Chelsea??? either way they are the same to me as it was so boring i fell asleeop at the mamak stall and they had to bring me back to Julian's house and continued watching there.

When i woke up the next afternoon, we had Dominos Pizza for lunch and played some PS2 games. I went home in the evening and had dinner with my aunt. After dinner I bathed for the first time in 24 hours and started work on the OSS lists again. Feeling too tired and bored from all those senseless numbers, I ended up chatting online and went to sleep.

When I woke up the next morning, after having ample sleep, I smsed Julian and Teoh whom were already working on friday morning to taunt them and got to work on the spreadsheets finishing them around 12am that night.

I started packing up some clothes to attend the Incovar Graduates Camp (I know i havent graduated yet! You dont need to tell me that!) and thats when Teoh called me and asked me if he could bunk in at my place for the night as it was nearer to get to the camp rendezvous point the next morning.

I will leave the details on how he got lost and then I got lost in KL and ended up reaching home at 2.30am. All I could say was, the camp was really informative and tiring as the camp schedule was really jam packed like some intensive training.

When the camp ended there was no crying or hugging due to the hectic camp schedule that reduced human interaction. Had dinner with some friends (that I have already known before the camp) and reached home a tired person. Chatted with my causin about his Shanghai trip and then went to bed.

Intresting, informative, intensive, tiring and inspiring weekend. Nice.... Looking foward to my next weekend here and the escapades that are possible as my causin will be in Singapore to see his girlfriend the whole weekend....

After I checked in for work on the second day, my supervisor discussed with me the details of my industrial training activities. Because Swedish Motor Assemblies Sdn. Bhd. is an assembly plant and does not involve themselves in the manufacture of plastics what so ever, all my knowledge of polymers arent of any use there. So he gave me the suggestion that I should do what all the other trainees do when they come to SMA..... (No not sit there, wander around and rot) I am going to do a small scale project alone, to gauge the manufacturing cycle time for 3 Volvo models, namely the S80, XC90 as well as the S40.So he gave me a stack of files that I am supposed to work on by the end of the week. What I am supposed to do with those files then are to use them to update the PII list of the cars. The PII list (it is p i i not p 2) is a list that specifies each step a worker who assembles the car should do in order at each station. So the idea of this project is to time the time taken for each of the steps to be completed. Once that is done, the times used for each process can be used to streamline the assembly line in a process called "line balancing" which is to ensure that all the produciton lines finish the required steps at a particular station at the same time.Basically, sometimes all the stations are already done with their work but the assembly line couldnt move foward because one station still has yet to complete the given set of tasks. This is a major wastage of labour as all the other workers are idle while waiting for that particular station to complete the task at hand. With the data on the time used for EACH and every step involved in the assembly process, the tasks can be divided equally amongst all the 10 stations or so. This would not only streamline the process and increase efficiency, it would also mean that all the workers have the same amount of work to do, hence they wont get grumpy that they are doing more work than the others. The first step in this project, is to update the PII list as I said earlier. This meant that i have just spent the first week of my industrial training doing Exel spreadsheet after spreadsheet of lists pertaining the code of each step in the assembly process. This is certainly a boring task i must admit, but I am glad for the air conditioned office that i get to work in, the linient supervisor and the other friendly colleagues in the office. Well it isnt exactly an office strictly speaking. Its called the CMM (Computerized Measuring Machine) department, room that holds the CMM machine, 2 Dell pcs and a host of people who work there who makes quite a bit of noise to relieve their working stress. A lively bunch of people then. Work aint that bad with them around. And since the boss of the Audit and Engineering department (the department which I am stationed at) is in the office beside the production line, she doesnt come by to breathe down my neck to make me work harder and faster than what I already am doing.Truth be told though, I think 3 big 2 Horse power air cons to cool one CMM room is kind of overkill. I am not really afraid of cold weather. I could walk around the Genting Theme Park in my bermudas and t-shirt. I go for movies in that too. But my supervisor has even greater resistance to cold (in fact he likes it cold) always switches on all the other 2 air cons to full blast when he enters the room making it a chill room. I put on my jacket in the office while doing the spreadsheets as the cold is slightly more than i am capable of bearing.A whole week of spreadsheets have passed along with some side activities such as attending the training that is conducted by the Audit and Engineering department head which the power point slides were prepared my yours truly and some wandering around to explore the factory (really liked the engine assembly section and the testing section) to kill boredom. But the one thing I found intresting is the male toilet.I thought offensive graffitis [...]

Latihan Industri Minggu 1, hari 1

2008-04-27T21:24:13.447+08:00

Today is the first day of industrial training and strangely i fell asleep during the working hours several times. This has been attributed to a lack of sleep that has snowballed since the night before i came to KL up till now. Another factor is the lack of mental stimulation during the training.

I got there half an hour early at 7 am (yes my working hours starts at 7.30 am) and signed in at the guard house. After waiting on the bench and getting sized up by the steady stream of managers and engineers signing parking and flashing their ID cards at the guard house, the HR manager finally reached the factory and she asked me to follow her to the meeting room where i waited some more.

There i was briefed on some pertinent issues and then assigned to an engineer which i would be sticking to throught the 10 weeks of training. The engineer is called Azril and he just started working for about 6 months.

He brought me around the factory for a bit, asked me about what I intended to do for training and then the senior engineer asked me to help her on her powerpoint presentation which i did as it was the first "real" work that i got for the whole day. Thanks to that i didnt dozed off.

2 meal breaks during working periods sounds good but the food at the canteen is so teruk that i dont really feel like eating hence i just scooped a bit here and there to tahan lapar a little.... Which made realized. Thats y Arzil didnt want to go for lunch.... He might hate the food there too.... Swt at least i will just have to endure it for at least 10 working weeks lar...

10 working weeks aint that long thanks to the economic slowdown, people arent buying that many volvos and the factory had to reduce production by putting in to place some "lay-off" days where i wont need to go to work on alternate fridays. I sure hope they add more of those in the near future after i know my way around KL more... Would like to lepak at One-Utama or MidValley or the Pavillion lar....

Overall, today was a boring and unproductive day. In fact i felt even more productive if i woke up at 12 pm and read MalaysiaToday, friend's blogs, checked my mail, eat lunch and watch anime during for the rest of the day during my study break. Did i really get in to the right place for latihan industry?

The Do Re Mi of my Rectum

2007-10-15T18:30:59.890+08:00

When my room mate fell quite heavily sick i brought him to see the doctor twice in a week and that whole week he was really unenergetic, lying on the bed as like a terminal disease patient waiting to expire but of course he didn't expire as his illness wasn't terminal. The interesting thing though is the poster that i came across at the clinic. At first glance it looked as though a children's chart teaching them to read ABC or to identify objects but upon closer examination it turned out to be a poster of the manure hardness scale so i took a picture of it so that i could blog about it someday and that day wasn't that far off apparently as i suffered from a stomach wrenching pain early last friday morning woke me up from bed at around 7 am in the morning despite the fact that i have only started sleeping at 5 am. It felt as though my intestines were about to rupture as it tries to force bowel movement with some violent peristalsis that seem to just increase the internal pressure of my intestines.I made haste to the toilet where I tried hard to empty my bowels to no avail. Apparently i had some low fiber meal some time ago and the solid low fiber content shit caused a traffic back lock where the higher fiber content shit had difficulty moving forward. This traffic back lock has caused me to become shitless (as in restless but this applies to shitting) for the whole 5 days that i have been here in USM. In the ever intensifying pain, I tried to push hard in an attempt to get the slow moving shit to travel faster but after squatting there for more than 15 minutes only a few marble sized pieces of shit got out. The pain subsided a little but a new pain has already manifested. My knees are just aching from squatting so i washed my butt hole with the but hole washing pipe and limped back to the comfort of my bed to resume sleepy... for a while before the next wave of pain arrives. After 15 minutes of nursing my aching kneed and back, the painful feeling as my rectum pressurizes itself starts again hence making me rush to the toilet again to open my rectum overpressure release valve. This time i noticed a reduction in shit hardness and a perceivable overall increase in shitability of the shit. This endless cycle continued until i finally got to shit hardness number 5 (refer figure 1 above) which was the easy part as all the shit started flowing and the hardness subsided from 5 to 6. After that my woes are solved and i washed up and went back to bed at 12 pm after more than 4 hours of toilet patrol.Observing my shit hardness gradually reduce per dumping session, i guess my stomach really was kinda doing a vocal test like in an ochestra where the singers start with the low notes first and gradually progress to the higher notes like the picture below:It is a waste though that the 8th note, "To" is not able to fit in the shit hardness index but upon further analysis i believe the missing note from this chart is actually FART. Yes the methane rich stinking gaseous form of excrement evolved from feces. So when you take a dump some time soon you can see your rectum singing in perfect harmony with the toilet bowl as it releases different notes and pitches in tandem with your fiber and water intake that corresponds to it. Kinda think of it, its also like the ice samples drilled from the polar ice caps that tells scientists the situation of the earth, tens of thousands of years ago just that this happens in time scale of a few days.[...]

On Full Moon's Day...

2007-09-27T03:50:50.363+08:00

5 thousand years of chinese astrology couldn't go wrong... the full moon on the 8th lunar month will always be the brightest full moon of the year. Chinese culture has traditionally been closely related to the moon as the Chinese calendar IS based on the cycles of the moon. For generations, the Chinese people have been farming and holding their annual festivals based on the lunar calendar and it has not let us down.Tonight is especially special as the full moon is at its best. So bright, so serene yet it reflects upon us a sense of sorrow and melancholy. I do not know about you but I am certainly feeling a little melancholiac right now.I was about to download the attachment on my email which is a copy of the assignment that we are suppose to hand up today and i was in charge of doing the final editing. Unfortunately, before i clicked on the link to download the file, as though the moon beckons people to get out of their dorms and get a break from their busy lives to experience its magnificence, the whole campus suffered from a blackout. Only the emergency lights that were fully charged all this while kicked in to action and dimly illuminated the corridors, the staircase and the toilets.Annoyed i packed up my notebook as i was in my friends room and i asked them whether they want to go out for mamak or just to have a stroll around the hostel area to soak up the atmosphere of this special night. Their answer was a resounding NO as they prepared their beds and bunked in. I can barely tell what they were doing on their beds with the dim moonlight coming in from the windows that were now opened wide to let the cool breeze of the night come in.Feeling a little let down, i climbed up the stairs to my room to keep my notebook and lock it up in the closet just in case of theft as the incidents of theft are really high in the past month. I took along only my room keys that were attached to the bicycle lock keys and my handphone and off i went down again to get a bike ride and soak up the view of the full moon just like what i have always done without fail as a little kid. Back then i went out of the house with a lantern of course but since i do not have one with me at the time, my bicycle would suffice. I cycled around at a relaxed pace feeling the breeze blowing on my face and taking deep breaths of this cool and refreshing air while making phone calls at the same time. Number after number i dialed and all of them refused to join me in my 'cycle as you enjoy the night'.This lack of friends during such a great time to kick back and chat makes me feel the emptiness of this place again all of a sudden. Just as the moon's serene light shines upon my gaze, i feel the serene melancholy of being without friends that would join me to do something crazy just to feel young and alive again. The human atmosphere here is almost as though every person for him/herself. As i cycle past other people who are taking walks because they couldn't sleep like me, i gazed at them trying to make out who they were, looking at their blurred out faces in the dark. It was as though i was dead and all i could see were faceless people walking around. The only thing that reaffirms that i wasn't dead was the fact that the other people also looked back at me trying to make out who i was just as i was doing the same to them. The fun of cycling alone in the darkness only illuminated by the moonlight quickly fizzled as there were no one to share the joy with. So is my main reason of feeling sorrow in this place where not only god, but men forsake.I locked back my bike at its place and i ascended the same stairs tat greet me every week and every day as i come back to this place of grief, sorrow, frustration and bitterness. Although life's experiences are suppose to make us better and not bitter, how can i be better when everyone else here is bitter?[...]

Blog Taggers

2007-09-18T15:26:30.139+08:00

It seems tagging is quite rampart or should i say, widespread in the blogging scene these days. I guess the term "Tag" came from the children's playground game of "Tag" where you chase down someone and touch him/her and say "TAG!! You're it!" and run off to avoid being chased down by the "Tagged" person to be tagged again to be "it". Thus the idea of tagging stems from. But i don't quite get the idea of "Tagging" your blogger friends as they can't run off somewhere to avoid getting tagged and you don't get the adrenaline rush of hunting down your prey to "tag" him/her so that he/she can be "it". This children's game is especially good to build muscles, balance, stamina , hand eye coordination, judgement of distance and the hunters instinct but tagging bloggers who cant run away from you takes away the fun of sharpening that hunters instinct and getting the adrenaline rush. Thus I personally do not see the point of tagging people besides being something like e-mail spam such as friendship messages, sad imaginary sobers who will get a cent for every email forwarded, or some ghastly story that ends with a threat of death, impotency or something lame like that to get people to feel that it will not hurt to forward these spam mails. Tags are about the same. Spam email is the worlds no. 1 loss of internet productivity. NOT viruses or malicious worms. The people who forward spam themselves are as terrible as a virus in your Windows. I believe tags are just going to be the no. 1 loss of productivity for bloggers pretty soon. Since Huay Phing INSISTED that I do her tag, then i shall right here, right now. Initially i just planned to ignore those wee wang wang that she told me yesterday night but just now I saw a 1.5 m long biawak which reminded me of the old days where some one used to call some one biawak or was it cicak... Eh?? I'm not really sure about that la... But nevermind lets get down to business.Tag : 5 things.....5 Things In My Bag1. Notes2. File3. Pencil Case that i have been using since form 24. Panadol5. The Evils of Education

2007-08-30T14:10:03.636+08:00

Education is a never ending and continuous process to equip the subject with knowledge in certain fields and to imbue the subject with living skills, morals and culture in order to produce a person whom is not only learned but also well behaved. In short, education produces people complete with knowledge and virtue. In today's social topography, education is said to be the very driving force for a nation's human resource development. Without a proper education system, a country will not make it as a developed country in the foreseeable future. Education gives the subject a better chance at life in his/her future whether its to land him/her the perfect dream job or to improve competitiveness in climbing the corporate ladder or just simply to meet ones own means. Education is also the core of social development as it grooms young leaders to succeed the current the leaders of today and to lead the country to further heights. Education is so essential to youth these days, parents are willing to fork out a lot of money just to send their children overseas in their search of higher standards of education. So i believe that everybody should be convinced that education is the very embodiment of all that is good, the training grounds for the saviours of the needy, the candle for the young to light their path to realise their future, and the vanquisher of all evils right? It is true as long as the whole concept of education is practiced and carried out in a proper balance between academic excellence and human development. As religions, nations and leaders had strayed from their original path blinded by various side distractions, so did education itself. The education system of today places tremendous emphasis on academic excellence that the basic meaning behind the whole concept of education has been lost. The students go to school day in and day out only to find themselves in tuition centers later the very same day just to make sure that they do not miss out on what is included in the syllabus that has been released by the Education Ministry. They spend more time at school and in tuition centers than with their family. Their whole aim in their education is to succeed to score fantastic results in their final exams no matter what the cost. This is partly because of the examination orientated system that is practised in this country and partly because of the crumbling societal values.Gone are the days where neighbours were nice to each other and even give each other food occasionally. These days neighbours do not even know each other. They just get back home and lock the gate and doors behind them, clambering in the safe heaven that they created for themselves which is their house. I say their house is their safe heaven and not their homes because to make a home, you also need strong family ties besides a house. Families today are also not as "family" as it used to be in the good old days. Kids have their own room which they lock themselves in and retreat from the need to interact with their own family. Parents on the other hand are just too busy leveling up in the make or break game called their "career".The crumbling societal norms has paralyzed the very process of education in which the role of family is completely nullified. Without the values imparted from the family unit itself, discipline has become rampart in schools. Parents blame the teachers for not teaching their children properly without realizing that they themselves were in the wrong when they neglected their own role in the education process of their own children. Parents who are so engrossed in the highly addictive MMRPG (not MMORPG cos its not played online) called "career" are so used to seeing their results in terms of figures that they deem the subjective elements of education unimportant because they cannot be put in t[...]

Unimaginative Consumerism

2007-08-27T21:42:36.278+08:00

Ahh... Consumerism. We have always heard campaigns yapping about it in our ears litterally. But what really is consumerism? Consumerism is defined as the happiness from purchasing material possesions and consumption. Unfortunately consumers these days do not have the grace to literally enjoy the product that they bought. Everyday the moment you walk out of your house, turn on the TV or the radio, read the newspapers and surf the internet, you will be bombarded with a bewildering pleathora of advertisements aimed at brainwashing you.The government's propaganda are usually anti-consumerist & genereally aimed to reduce inflasion by causing fear amongst consumers from buying products that might be deemed unnecessary. Products tat you will just buy because you feel like having it and then subsequently just putting it aside after you have just purchased it. Because of these campaigns, cosumers have become so fearful that they might have just bought something that they wouldnt need. Something that will turn out useless. Something that will not perform to their requirements and thus this fear manifests itself in hesitation when purchasing a product from a sector that they do not know about very well. For instance, when you want to buy a flash drive for the first time, you will observe the people around you. What brand do they generally buy. Which model? And since a lot of people have heard of the brand Kingston in the RAM business, they just get ouy there and end up buying a Kingston DataTraveller USB 2.0 flash drive. The result? In just one assignment group that i was in, almost all my group members are using Kingston DataTravellers. Even the group beside my table!! Bluddy hell!! And whats even more amusing is that everyone have a different model so we compilled them all up to form the complete product range of Kingston's DataTraveller 2 series. From 256Mb all the way up to 2Gb. Amazing isn't it? Its just so mind boggling that everybody just goes out and get one of these without any tought of the possibility that there might just b other alternatives to this boring product. I mean come on la... Sometimes people mix up each others thumbdrives just because they all have the same one. They cluth their thimbdrives so securely in their fists fearing that they will mix it up with someone elses.GET A DIFFERENT ONE for crying out loud. Dont act like zombies and just get what everyone has. Just because everyone has one it doesnt mean that its the only one out there. Since this is not Ajinomoto or Tupperware which other companies can only make inferior copies of, we can freely choose other brands as they offer the same product but packaged better, suiting your individuality. Do you want to become a robot, a zombie or even a stereotype? If the answer is a resounding NO, then when you are buying something that you are unfamiliar of again, remember this blog. You can be different!Just remember go do your research on the internet before hand. Its easy and al you have to do is to go to websites by third party independant reviewers like PC magazine who independantly test products. Read their reviews and decide for yourself which suits you best. Besides, the stuff you use SOMETIMES DOES reflect your personality.Another problem in consumerisme is consumer stupidity. Small amounts of it is good news for the manufacturers but in large doses it can be a real problem. When i saw this label on a washing machine in Harvey Norman, Queensbay Mall, I couldn't help but wonder why they have to put it on the washing machine. Besides this sticker, there was also a sticker that warn you against dipping your hand in to the water because it might be hot. Then the picture of the dumb American who managed to sue GM because of his accident came to my mind. That dumb ass managed to sue GM for not [...]

Connectivity cut off again....

2007-08-17T23:35:08.216+08:00

For the past 2 days, i find myself suffering from incurable boredom yet again... The cause is due to another disruption in the internet connectivity. Not just the internet suddenly stopped working all together, the entire network was shut off for 2 full days. Studying in this campus is already boring due to its shortage of activity, facilities and places to eat and hangout but the loss of the world wide web and DotA for 48 hours was the final nail in the coffin. It was excruciatingly boring and dull. Assignments also were disrupted because now i have to walk to my group member's rooms with my thumbdrive to copy the parts and edit & print it out back in my room. We used to send emails with attachments or use MSN Messenger to get this menial task done which further proves the point where all humans are now so hopelessly dependent on the Internet that we actually suffer in its absence.

I asked around a bit for the reason of this troublesome disruption and apparently the gals told me that when they went to the Computer & Communications Center to lodge a service disruption report, all the technicians went "Balik Kampung" because its convocation week and wont be around to jaga the server. So they shut it all off. "-_- MCB MCH LCK they all!! How can they do this to us!! Nasib baik all the info for the assignment were saved from the internet before the thing got switch off. If not i wont have an assignment to hantar today already. Those B@$T@&)#$!! At least leave the network on when you people balik kampung la!! Dun need you to jaga it to keep it running oso!! Nobody wanna hack the server oso!! Pandai suruh kita orang balik China tapi sendiri saja tau balik kampung!!

Dumb Charity People

2007-08-11T03:03:49.709+08:00

Recently one of my friends came to me and asked me to help starving children in third world countries by chipping in a few bucks to raise a fund. The title of this fund is Hungry for Hope and what i especially find disturbing about is what's written in the donation leaflet itself. Besides from the usual self introduction like what all other charity funds would do, they also stated their intention to make their peak event this year even bigger as i have highlighted using a highlighter that i could instantly dig out out of one of my female coursemate's stationery bags (its really convenient that gals have all kinds of stiff in their stationary bags ranging from markers, highlighters, cutting tools, rulers, pens and pencils these days in contrast to guys whose pencil cases [note the use of pencil instead of stationery in this case] which you would be lucky of you could even find a highlighter in it) and highlighted the phrase which i find amusing. It reads "To mark this milestone, the famine will be bigger than ever before -5000 participants- combining Chinese and English in one exciting camp!"Here is a picture that i took to prove it to you readers that those idiots actually said that:Before I start telling you why this shit is worrying let me quote the definition of famine. In my dictionary that i have here, they defined famine (noun) as "a state where there is an extreme scarcity of food. A shortage or archaic hunger". So when my friend handed me this donation leaflet and asked me to support the charity fund, I donated RM 3 (hey what the heck if its for the starving people rite?) but after i gave her the money, I got curious about the whole thing so i read through the leaflet and what I saw made me burst out in laughter. I really dont know whether its about the wrong usage of the word famine or the other "implied meanings" that that sentence held. But whatever the reason, I told her that i actually donated RM 3 to make more people starve.Of cause she defended her actions by telling me that people that reach the target RM 100 would be able to join the "famine camp" *LOL!! on a first come first served basis and only a "LIMITED" number of "privileged people" (5000) could join it. She says its good for her as she was planing to lose some weight anyways. In this "Famine Camp", people will get to gather at a place and not be served food but only water for 30 hours!! WTF!!! My other friend quickly rebutted that statement by telling her a medical fact that shook her decision. When you starve especially for 30 hours, your body goes in to starvation mode. Once in starvation mode, whatever proteins or carbohydrates that you eat while you are still in this mode will ALL BE TURNED IN TO FAT AND STORED IN YOUR BODY. This means, the big delicious and hearty meal that you are bound to eat after the "Famine Camp" will top up the glycogen stock in your liver and the rest of it ALL goes under your skin. So much losing weight huh? What in the world are those people thinking? What does that line actually imply? It can actually be interpreted as the "charity foundation" shall use the money and make more starving people or it could also be interpreted as this charity are actually going to round up 5000 "fortunate" Chinese and English nationals and starve them to the point where they experience famine & cannibalize each other in an exciting game of survival of the fittest. *LOL the language used here is kind of disturbing la... Can somebody please tell the person who designed that leaflet to go back to school? Marketing is one thing, this leaflet is exaggerating. If you really wanna help starving kids i think there are other more productive ways besides starving yourself and making yourself wanna eat the person beside [...]

Limited connectivity... yet again

2007-08-06T23:49:09.022+08:00

Sien nya~ 2day i wanna blog bout some bull shit i came accross during lunch break. Took pictures of it but when i wanna upload to Picasa that time t turns out that USM has blocked it yet again.... Haih... just when i got free time and mood wanna blog they block Picasa, when i no mood blog they unblock picasa.

Today, Finally

2007-07-18T16:36:00.331+08:00

Wah I almost went crazy from the deprivation of connectivity the past few days. Although my roomie lodged a complaint about the absence of internet connectivity last week, today oni they connect the room port. The past week i felt the weight of cyberspace addiction in the form of the inability to casually surf the web and also get info to do my assignment. Yes so early in this new semester I oledi passed up one assignment ade..

Had to go to my friends room in the middle of the night when he duwan to use the line tat time oni can do my assignment. Thankfully it is kinda short. 2 pages to type out and I used 1 hr + to kau tim. In the previous blog, there is no mention watsoever about my new roomies because when I blogged that, they havent moved in to the room yet!!

One of my roomie is a rather quiet kuai chai who is in Tzu Zhi USM and the other originally not suppose to live here 1 but since he prefers living in the top floor where this room is less occupied so he moved in lo.. I kenal him previously from the Debate Union and when he just got back from Australs Debate Competition, he was roomless because he reach on the 3rd day of the semester so he bunked in for the night as there are only 2 people including myself in this room and the other 2 beds comes bed sheets... "-_- USM memang got favourism for 1st year students but unfortunately they refused to show up in this place to study so he just stayed in the room oni la~

Better for him and for me la cos I really dun hav much to tok to the kuai chai cos he is kinda nerdy and to tell u the truth, I still dun know his name and phone number :P~ hahaha since when have i become so unsocialable? Or was i like this from the start but was just putting on a social mask to mask my unfriendly and inward self which i hide from others??

Seriously, I think that almost everyone has their alter ego, their other side, their dark side or maybe i am just speculating too much just because i am like that? Well according to horoscopes, Geminis like me always have a ,multiple facet personality. Am I in doubt of the very essence of who I am??

Jibunwa Noob Blogger Desuka?

2007-07-06T19:26:33.199+08:00

I have finally made the faithful move from live spaces to blogspot already... Problem is, i cant find a skin that i like... Even though Huay Phing recommended blogskins.com but i still couldnt find one that would suit what i want... Shit lo dun tell me i will hav to b stuck wif this not so good looking skin meh? Nvm stay tuned as i ban2 find a skin to suit my blog lo..... Kesiannya saya... My blogger since March 2005 status gone ade... Swt now it says here i am a brand new blogger....

Transfered my 2 more recent posts from live spaces and will slowly build my blog from here lo.... Besides that, I am planing to edit a photo for my head line as well....

New life begins again in USM, new subjects and a new deputy dean as well.... Strange thing that the ex deputy dean got demoted to become just another normal lecturer. Sometimes its quite strange how even supposedly learned lecturers indulge themselves in the dreadful game of Office Politics.

This made me think back of another case not too long ago in my campus where the Dean of Areospace Engineering got demoted to become a normal lecturer and an Average Joe Masters Degree Graduate became the new Dean. Masters man!!! Not even PhD become Dean.... The Deputy Dean resigned from Aerospace Engineering USM as a result of this because he was unable to acknowledge the new Dean (or rather the ungainly ways he used to achieve it)

Now i sincerely hope that this new semester wont b another period of my life I would rather not recall... This is Chung Hwa your once in a quite a number of blue moons blogger signing out for now to eat dinner. Till then, Cheers!!

A Senseless Sign

2007-07-06T19:02:35.332+08:00

Recently i went to a Indian food joint to have my dinner because that place always has a queue in front of the shop even before its open. Then I though hmm.... It always has a queue because it might be delicious. So when i actually went to try it out. Well the first thing that hit me was how uneconomical it was.... Well obviously because its Indian Food!! Its always cut-throat priced!! I just got some beef with vege and eggs and they charge me freakin RM 4.50 and my friend who got confused between chicken and Quill got his Jugular arteries slit big time wif RM 6.00!! and to imagine MIC crying foul about the wealth of the nation not being evenly distributed, the Indian community is being undermined etc etc but just look at the price of their food restraunts!!! How can the owner of that place be poor!!! Look at the Indian scrap metal shops!! They earn a bomb man!! There is just a large gap between the rich and the poor with little middle class Indians around.. My hypothesis, well if an Indian restaurant owner can sleep well at night knowing that their food is actually that expensive i suppose they just don't mind oppressing their own kind which has been done since the old days with their caste system where the "Brahmins" oppress the other castes and deem the inferior.

Well the food this time was just so so only though (shit.. cant believe i payed that amount of money for food that doesn't taste good and above that i found out why there was a queue in front of the shop at all times... The service is freakin slow for heavens sake!! I got the daylights sucked out of me by a oppressive dude who has no compassion and i end up with not so good food!!) To make my point that the owner has NO compassion what so ever i even took a photograph of a really senseless sign that i saw for the very first time in my life.....

(image)

"Jangan Mengemis" (don't beg) is stated clearly at the wall of the restaurant... What is the owner stupid?? Like the beggars who come begging for money have a choice man?? Hmm wait a minute some beggars are still physically able right... Okay I retract half my statement... Hows bout this for good measure...

(image)

Conditional allowance... Other peoples needs are different because we cant just label all beggars as lazy people who just don't want to work... Some of them do not have a choice really... Perhaps some old people are thrown out of their homes by their nasty children.. Some have no family and when they got too old to work, they had no choice but to become a beggar and to live off sympathy... So this is my call to all you nasty throat slitting, own race oppressing bosses out there. Have some sympathy for the needy. Its not like some of them had a choice you see... Some of them are so arthritis ridden they cant even work as a dishwasher at a restaurant.. Who knows your children will learn from your example and throw you out of the house in favour of his wife due to their ZSHY nature (refer to http://www.leaxx7.blogspot.com/ the Zhong Sek Heng Yau blog) and when that time comes you will be at the receiving end.

Mango Flavoured Pizza Anyone?

2007-07-06T19:05:38.842+08:00

A few days ago I and two other unknowing friends went to Pizza Hut Parit Buntar to try out Pizza Huts newest offering ; Tropical Delight or something lah.. We ordered the Tropical set 2 which comes with a garlic bread, 4 bowls of soup of the day, 4 glasses of iced lemon tea (which tasted more apricotish than lemonish if you ask me) and a large pan of Tropical Delight pizza. We got swayed to get it because it comes with garlic bread instead of those inferior Breadstix that come with the usual set meals.

We found the "Tropical Delight" pizza quite undelightful to be polite to it. In truth it was dreadful. The so called "mango" tasting sauce base used in this crap is so awful and tastes so strong that it nullifies whatever flavour there is left in the other ingredients to spare the creators and the tasters of this pizza any dignity.

At first we didn't know what that awful flavour actually was. We just know it originates from the sauce base and it tastes weird. I thought it tasted like Apricot Jam. My two other friends reckoned it was a well disguised BBQ sauce and a tomato based modified puree. We even went to the stage that we were arguing about what awful sauce it was while stuffing ourselves with this blasphemy of a pizza. It feels as though some idiot in the Pizza Hut R&D Department couldn't think of any new flavour to make, grabbed some Apricot flavoured BBQ sauce jam from the fridge in his desperation and spread it under the cheese and the ingredients of this pizza and there u have it! Tropical Dreadful Pizza!

To confirm our suspicions, we stopped one of the waiters to inquire the true origin of the sauce and to our horror, it was actually mango flavoured sauce. We were bemused and laughing sarcastically in the restraunt looking at whats left of the Pizza

(image)

So in an attempt to reduce its "awfulness" we tried to dip the pizza in the remaining soup that we had left and that turned out terrible. The mango flavour completely replaced the flavour of the soup and all we had was a mouthful of pizza and soup that tasted like some bad tasting mango syrup that you can buy from the stalls on the side of the road for 20c. Crap! Someone fire the jack ass creating these lousy flavours for Pizza Hut! First the Satay Pizza and now this! Pizza Hut Sdn. Bhd.; if you are reading this heed my call... Fire or demote the jack ass and only serve cream of mushroom for the soup! That will give your companies reputation that is currently in tatters a boost!
