I've mostly administered Linux, with some OS level administration on Solaris. My new position requires more comprehensive Solaris Administration, including patching.

Over the past few months I’ve put up with Sun's proprietary attitude, but charging for (critical) patches goes too far; how unfriendly. From now on I'm pushing Linux.

Someone here compared Sun to Microsoft and I agree. How petty of Sun.

hmm, well that stinks, I was a longstanding customer with my company before but now am independent. They say a registered user is entitled to "free patches" but I guess it is only the patches they choose?? Everyone wants to be like MS (i.e. validation patch)Yuk! RHLinux (3.5) requires a contract or license to get access to patches. I am going to look for other ways to update my latest Sol 10 install. If anyone knows of a way, drop a post here. Gratzi!

yes, I agree! pay USD$324 for a " basic" service plan.....Solaris is unfriendly now...I can use AIX or Linux!

When we were buying their systems Sun Microsystems stated that I have already the license to run and upgrade Solaris that was sold TOGETHER WITH THE HARDWARE.
Now they require to buy some kind of service plan in order to access RECOMMENDED patch clusters that always were free for EVERYONE WHO BOUGHT SUN SOFTWARE LICENSE.
Why?
Is patching bugs in own software the company sold is now considered as a service?

No wonder why the industry goes to Linux today...

i can't download one even though i am a registered sunsolve user. They now want you to buy a service plan to download a solaris 10 cluster patch. This is terrible! Is there anyone out there who can supply the cluster patch. I'm just trying to study solaris 10 at home, for F*(#'s sake. Why do we have to pay now ??
