gs: Lee Garlington (Claire) Pamela Brull (Laura)

A girl Jerry met on the road wants to stay with him when she comes to New York. George thinks that she is just using Jerry as contingency plan. Hoffman (Kramer) comes by to borrow a couple of pieces of meat. The girl calls and asks Jerry if she can stay at his apartment for the night, when she arrives she asks to stay for another night. Jerry is disappointed when everything is going his way until he finds out she is engaged.

b: 05-Jul-89 pc: 101 w: Larry David & Jerry Seinfeld d: Art Wolff

NOTE: In this episode, Jerry refers to Kramer as Kessler, because we later learn in "The Betrayal" this was the name on the buzzer for Kramer's apartment. This also discounts the fact that Kramer has sublet the apartment from Paul Buchman from Mad About You in an episode of that series that aired after "The Virgin." I suppose that Buchman could have sublet the apartment to someone named Kessler before Kramer had moved in. As strange as Kramer can be, perhaps he thought it best to not let anyone know he lived there and never changed the name.
In the first scene of this episode, Jerry comments George about the button on his shirt. He repeats this same comment in the last scene of the last episode! [Editor's Note: Yes, as I mention in the description of the final episode.]
In this episode, the coffee shop Jerry and George go to is not Monk's. The exterior shot reads "Pete's".
In the TV Guide entry for this episode, his character is credited as Hoffman. I assume that this is the way it appeared in the script somewhere along the way. There were probably a number of name changes for this character, while Kenny Kramer was deciding whether or not his name could be used.
In this episode, Kramer/Kessler's apartment door is not there. In its place is a picture. Also, Kramer/Kessler has a dog in this episode.
Even in the pilot episode, there is a Superman reference. When Jerry sits down to watch TV, he is wearing a bright blue pair of sweat pants, and a bright red sweatshirt.
Didn't Kramer/Kessler also knock on Jerry's door in this episode?
Check out Jerry's apartment in this episode! It's WAY different then it is in the other episodes! The walls are yellow, the kitchen cabinets are brown and are EMPTY! In the other episodes, the walls and cabinets are blue and the cabinets are filled with kitchen stuff. Another thing I should point out is Jerry has NO bedroom! In this episode all we see is a living room and a bathroom. In the other shows, Jerry has a bedroom and that and the bathroom are connected by a hallway which was also not present in the first episode. (Brandon)

I wonder why in the opening credits of this episode ("The Seinfeld Chronicles") Lee Garlington is assumed the role of a regularly returning cast member. Why did they drop her in later episodes? She would have been a great element in Monk's, along with Ruth and Monk himself. Oh, well.

Also, Jerry notes, "If this were my father he would have to have a cigarette in his mouth the entire time" Morty was never seen smoking, nor was it ever mentioned.

I think I read somewhere that they decided to use Elaine as the chief female character rather than the waitress. The delay in getting Elaine into the series is mirrored in the episodes where George and Jerry are writing the TV show and don't include her character in the pilot.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2003-12-10T00:56:03-05:00

When Jerry insists on cleaning his bathroom before the girl arrives, George says, "In a situation like this, never do what your instinct tells you. Always do the opposite."

Jerry asks him, "This is how you operate?"

and George responds, "I wish."

This is foreshadowing of "The Opposite."

The Seinfeld Chronicles

Also, at the beginning of the episode when Jerry and George are at the coffee shop, Jerry is drinking caffeinated coffee and George is adamant about getting decaf.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2003-12-10T08:30:43-05:00

Yeah, I noticed that opposite comment by George too. The episode was on last night and that's the first time I connected that.

Does ANYONE have a copy of this episode on tape? My boyfriend would LOVE this! E-MAIL at DKallbrier@aol.com if you do!!!

There's a video floating around on bittorrent. though named as "seinfeld.00x00.pilot.good.new.bad.news.pdtv.xvid.avi"
I assume whoever ripped this didn't know the episode's title and I can't find any episode by that name on your guide.
anyway, could this really be the pilot episode?.
I guess I'll know soon.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

Some sites call the first episode good news, bad news.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

The comment about the caffeine is interesting becasue we later learn from george that jerry never drinks anythign with caffeine in it. Elaine mentions when he drinks something with caffeine he gets all hyper. not so in the first episode.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-02-24T12:47:48-05:00

Stan, i watched a Seinfeld last night that was a part of the Chronicles i'm guessing. It was with the lady staying at jerry's house but i didn't see kramers door and so forth. is there different shows of the chronicles or just one episode.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-02-27T12:42:54-05:00

Jerry's apartment looked so weird, with the back of the couch facing the door. I'm glad they changed it, it was annoying. Also, the hallway is different color. I dont remember seeing the 5A his door, but I might have not been paying attention.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-05-25T14:15:12-05:00

passer-by, maybe initially Jerry and George weren't going to include Elaine in "The Pilot", but her character is definately there after Elaine convinces Russell to allow "Jerry" to continue...

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-07-19T04:13:43-05:00

Did you ever notice that when it first shows Jerry's apartment, he's wearing red pants and a blue shirt (superman colors), while eating cereal and watching the Met game? It looks like they were dropping subtle characterizations to Jerry's personality.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

It is obvious that Elaine was desparately needed after watching the first Seinfeld episode. It seems like there is a missing link when I watch this. There is not enough happening in the episode with Elaine absent. It was a smart idea on the show's part to add her to the cast.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

On my pc its called Good news, Bad news

The Seinfeld Chronicles

Sorta funny, too, how in the first episode Jerry is painted rather clueless about women with GEORGE the authority.

Also, is this the only episode where Kramer is supposed to have a dog. Or was that just a stray? :-)

Finally, and this is really a small item, Kramer seems to just partially tear out whatever it is he finds of interest in Jerry's magazine, but when Jerry gives him the snake-eye the article is fully removed and in Kramer's hand when the camera returns to him............

The Seinfeld Chronicles

When was this episode originally created?

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-08-04T04:54:26-05:00

It's the first episode.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-08-04T10:07:24-05:00

It was shown in the summer of 1989.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-08-11T22:29:17-05:00

Note: Jerry is wearing "red" sweat pants not "blue" and Blue sweat shirt not "red". Also, yes, the cabnets are brown, but how do you know they are empty??? They are never opened and you can't see through them so why do you assume they are empty??? Get your facts strait.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-08-11T22:36:14-05:00

Note: across the hall from Jerry's place is not Kramer's door, there is a painting on the wall instead. Also the number on Jerry's door is "8". Jerry also has a bay window with a telescope.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-10-05T19:10:17-05:00

in the episode of 'mad about you' where paul buchman visits kramer, he asks kramer about jerry and kramer tells him that jerry is writing a sitcom for nbc...but in 'the betrayal' he can actually seen when jerry first moves into his apartment, kramer is already in his apartment...so how did paul buchman know jerry???

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-11-30T13:39:49-05:00

The name kessler was actually the original name that they intended to cal kramer throughout the show but decided that kramer was more fitting.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-12-08T10:51:55-05:00

In this first episode, Kramer is also much more of a kook than the more outgoing hipster persona he eventually developed into.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2004-12-08T11:28:07-05:00

if you really want to get technical than the explanation that's given in "the betrayal" isn't even correct. in the betrayal, they show Jerry and Kramer meeting for the very first time. and Kramer tells jerry that his name is in fact Kramer and not Kessler. so in "the seinfeld chronicles", Jerry would still have no reason to call him Kessler, assuming that this takes place after they first met (which is obviously true).

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-01-02T10:34:33-05:00

Kessler is the name Larry David gave to the Kramer caracter initialy. The reason is that the Kramer caracter is based on a real human being (believe it or not); Larry David's neihghoor called ... Kramer. To avoid problem with the real Kramer, Larry decided to name him Kessler. But Jerry felt so much in love with the name Kramer that he persuade Larry to rename him Kramer.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-01-03T01:33:45-05:00

Also, his apartment is usually 3a, not 411.. 411 is cool tho thats my street adress :)

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-01-20T15:27:10-05:00

his apartment is NOT usually 3a. its 5a. they changed it after season 2 and it stayed as 5a forever after that

yeh seinfeld! :D

The Hand-sandwich...

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-01-24T16:18:00-05:00

For a pilot I think its pretty good.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-01-27T05:55:43-05:00

I don't know about y'all, but I like the theme music in this episode. I suppose if they'd kept it, it wouldn't have been the same but it reminds of a poppy industrial sound.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-02-11T18:30:02-05:00

Larry David had a neighbor in NYC that lived across the hall from him....his name was/is Kessler. Thus the initial reference to the name in the pilot.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-02-11T19:54:36-05:00

sorry, zing. but Larry David's neighbor was in fact name Kramer. And so, being worried that by using his name, he might ask for money or possibly sue the show, the writers decided to use the name Kessler. But jerry loved the name Kramer so much that they decided to use it!

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-03-09T02:38:59-05:00

in the coffee shop at the beginning, george doesnt drink any of his coffee during the conversation at all, he only drinks 2 sips after the waitress comes back and gives her 2 cents on the situation. im sure that the caffine in coffee takes more than 9 seconds to kick in... maybe he shouldve taken a drink earlier?
i have too much time

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-06-02T09:34:34-05:00

The pilot is so attractive, it could make people to study its own personality , this show really tell us nothing. but if we think it deeply, It will really find something. something really happened in our daily life.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-06-02T10:33:51-05:00

To get the most out of The Seinfeld Chronicles (and the first two seasons, collectively), you need to spend a year studying Curb Your Enthusiasm. I think CYE is closer to the show Larry David would've tried to make if he'd been in that NBC meeting without Jerry.

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2005-06-05T11:22:39-05:00

But remember people , "You can't over die , you can't over dry"

Any questions ?

The Seinfeld Chronicles

Seinfeld started out as a show about nothing. By Season 8 it was a butler show, with guys walking around with big neck collars.

OK....I noticed there were plenty of Seinfeld "experts" on here so I hope there is someone who can answer my question:

on what episode did George sing on his answering machine something about "I'm not home..." etc.?

It was SO funny and it is killing me that I don't know what episode it is...I NEED a copy of it so I can see it again!!

Thanks...

The Seinfeld Chronicles

I just wanted to comment on how some say that Kramer sublets from Paul Buchman.... I just saw that episode of Mad About You the other day, and actually Paul gives Kramer the apt. completely. He just hands it over to him and says its his.

In the first apartment Jerry had a skylight. Does anyone confirm that rubber duckey :-)

I am remembering a show that was BEFORE Seinfeld where Jerry and the same girl that played Elaine were living together, boyfriend and girlfriend. Someone suggested that I'm remembering a "flashback" episode of Seinfeld, but I seem to remember a whole lot more than just a "flashback" scene. Anyone???

The Seinfeld Chronicles

2006-05-13T22:09:35-05:00

According to my TIVO info, the first episode,#101 is called "Good News, Bad News"
Kramer's hair is normal and according to Jerry, he hasn't left the apt. in 10 years.
And George is in real estate and relatively skinny. It is weird with no Elaine. It is a great weird episode.

I 'taped' last week's Saturday Night Live because Jerry was guest host(David Bowie was the guest performer) and my husband inadvertently erased it off our DVR listing. Does anyone know how I can obtain a tape or DVD of this or does anyone know if and when this may be repeated? Needless to say, I was quite upset. Thank you for any suggestions. Christine
