Encoding video with Azure Media Services

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 12:59:07 GMT

In one of my previous tutorials I showed you how to livestream video from your desktop PC and serve it to viewers on internet. What happens if you already have a video that was recorded though?

What problem does this solve?

There are a variety of video formats available for streaming online, but it can be a bit of a project to determine which platform your video player is running on (iOS, Android, HTML5, etc.), as well as the appropriate encoding configuration. Just take a look at a handful of them below:

Imagine having to create all of those formats and configurations on your own. With Azure Media Services, you can upload a video, either from Azure blob storage or from your computer, and Azure will handle all of the encoding for you.

In the past, I'd have to do all of the encoding by hand using a tool like HandBrake, and even then, it will not spit out an .manifest file for adaptive streaming.  Additonally, it's a CPU intensive process, so it can often lock up your machine for the entire time you are encoding the video.

Going through the steps

The video tutorial below illustrates how I took a 3mb Big Buck Bunny .Mp4, uploaded it to Azure Media Services, and had it encode the video in various formats so that I could easily distrbute it across the internet. You can also find the step-by-step text instructions on how to do this on the Azure website.

Here's a full list of the tutorials in this series:

How to watch our videos on the site

Wed, 30 Oct 2013 18:18:35 GMT

When you go to watch a Channel 9 video, there is a lot of magic that happens to get you to the right format of video for your device and browser. Essentially though, you can end up watching videos on our site in one of a few different ways:

  • HTML 5 with H264 video (MP4): If your browser supports HTML 5 video, and the H264 codec, then you are set for Channel 9. A small number of our oldest videos may not have a MP4 version, but we are fixing that up as quickly as we can.
  • HTML 5 with WebM video: If you are running Firefox, especially on a non-Windows OS, then this is for you. We provide both a MP4 and WebM source in our HTML 5 output, so you'll be playing whichever one your browser supports.
  • Silverlight: We never force you to use a plugin to watch our videos, HTML 5 should always be an option, but if you already have Silverlight installed, then we'll happily use it to play the video.
  • Flash: Just like with Silverlight, Flash is never a requirement, but if your browser/OS doesn't support HTML 5 and you have Flash installed then we'll happily use it as well!
  • Click to play, or download... If all else fails, on our side or yours, we'll offer you a direct link to our video file in MP4 or WMV format. You can click that link and you'll either be prompted to download it or to open it up in a video player (exactly what happens is up to your browser and your settings).

You can also right click to download any of the video links we have on our pages. Generally we should always have a few different sizes of MP4 and an audio only version in MP3 format available for each and every one of our videos. Downloading is always a great option, especially if you want to grab the highest quality file (which we don't use in our streaming player) or if you want to have the video available offline.

Need an HTML 5 compatible browser?

I may have a personal preference, but any of these will work: IE9+, Firefox 4+, Chrome 5+, or Safari 4+

Can't install a new browser, but still want to watch the videos on the page?

For that, you'll need Silverlight or Flash installed.

IE9 HTML5 Video and Site Pinning

Wed, 23 Mar 2011 03:53:56 GMT

As part of the recent MSDN Unplugged event I presented around New Zealand demonstrating some of the new features of IE9 and emerging HTML5 capabilities.

This video shows how fast IE9 is using hardware acceleration for Canvas, SVG and video and compares to other browsers Firefox 4 RC, Chrome 10 and Chrome 12 canary builds.

This video introduces site pinning in IE9 and HTML5 video and shows you how to apply it in your web applications.

I have published a full description of the demos and links at http://bit.ly/dF0b6I

Xbox Kinect – It’s Not Just About the Games

Thu, 07 Oct 2010 14:04:46 GMT

We’re only a month away from the launch of Xbox Kinect, and whilst a huge amount has been written about some of the kick ass, motion-controlled games that are coming down the line (Kinect Adventures is definitely my favourite), there’s another really cool feature that hasn’t has as much limelight – live video chat.

Xbox LIVE Video Kinect (to give it its full name) allows you to chat via the Kinect’s video camera with friends who are also using Kinect, or on Windows Live Messenger. It includes an Auto-Zoom Focus which instantly finds you and follows you around the room (if you’re moving about) so you’re always in frame. Kinect’s integrated microphone means that there’s no headset required too.

When you go into the Video Kinect menu, you’ll be shown a list of your friends who have recently been online. Some will also be on Kinect, others on Windows Live Messenger, but you’ll see an integrated list.

Once you’re chatting with a friend, you can choose to watch a video together, which will open up in a separate box on screen – you can choose Movies, Sports, News and Music videos all from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

Video Chat on the TV used to be the stuff of science fiction, but next month, it’s all yours. Check out Video Kinect in action.

Major Update for Fav Media Center Plugin, TunerFreeMCE

Fri, 13 Aug 2010 13:53:00 GMT

The popular Windows Media Center plugin, TunerFreeMCE, has been updated in a release the developer, Martin Millmore, is calling a “major” upgrade. The new plugin is now Windows 7-only, forgoing Vista support in order to allow for the numerous improvements it includes.

Vista users can continue to use the older version of the plugin, though. The developer says that two-thirds of the plugin’s users are on Windows 7, so he made the decision to make improvements the majority can enjoy.

So what’s new in this release?  Things users have been asking for, including:

  • A new popup screen for managing the TV programs, allowing you to play the program, set a timer recording to record other showings of the program if you have a TV tuner configured, and if the program supports it you can add it to a playlist or download it (the last two work for BBC WMV programs, but not flash).
  • When playing flash content, sometimes the mouse didn't click in the right place. Now you can mode the cursor round the screen with the remote by pressing the cursor keys, and OK to click. This allows you to play even the most troublesome programs.
  • The interface is now touchscreen enabled, so if you have a touchscreen media center you can easily navigate through the screens.
  • Plugins are now directly available within the application. When you go to preferences you will see a list of plugins. When you pick one, the system will take care of installing and updating it to keep you up to date with your favorite content.
  • MSN has been removed. This is because there is now a native media center app to support MSN.
  • Improved memory management - only one instance of TunerFreeMCE will be active at any one time

If you’ve never tried TunerFreeMCE before, I recommend checking it out. It’s a great plugin for watching streaming Internet video on your PC and Media Center extender, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Five for UK users and Hulu support for US users. Believe it or not, the plugin is actually free. However, donations are accepted.
