Keefe Health Center Closed Jan. 19


The Keefe Health Center will be closed next Monday, Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Health Center office will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 20. UMass University Health Services is open to serve Amherst College students when the Keefe Health Center is closed. Those with medical emergencies should proceed directly to Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Career Center Drop-in Hours During Interterm


Due to overwhelming demand, our Peer Career Advisors will be holding drop-in hours for help with resumes, cover letters, navigating Quest and more. They will be available at the following times and locations: Wednesday, Jan. 14, noon to 2 p.m., Career Center; Thursday, Jan. 15, 1 to 3 p.m., Career Center; Thursday, Jan. 15, 7-9 p.m., Frost Library; Friday, Jan. 16, noon to 2 p.m., Career Center; Tuesday, Jan. 20, 7 to 9 p.m., Frost Library; and Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2 to 4 p.m., Career Center.

Registration is open for the seventh annual Gerald R. Fink '62 Bioscience Symposium, to be held on Thursday, Jan. 15, in Cole Assembly Room of Converse Hall, starting at 3 p.m. This year's theme will be "Health Care: The Crossroads of Science, Disease Treatment and Public Policy Initiatives," and the speakers come from a range of medical fields and health care policy areas. New Message Center Coming Soon to My Amherst


The new Amherst Message Center will launch mid-January. It will replace Intranet announcements and the Tuesday e-Digest. The Message Center will enable you to send news to students, faculty and staff directly, and to customize how and in what format you receive such notices. Messages will appear in My Amherst where Announcements currently appear. Under a new "Message Center" tab that will appear in My Amherst, you will be able to customize your settings and search all notices at any time-- and find simple instructions on making the Message Center work for you. Working on Wellness: Drop-In Group for Staff and Faculty to Improve Wellness


Working on Wellness (WOW) is an informal peer group for staff and faculty who are interested in improving well-being and trying out a variety of wellness practices. WOW has drop-in meetings open to all Amherst faculty and staff on the third Thursday of every month in one of the Val terrace rooms. At each meeting, the group selects a wellness practice to focus on in the upcoming month and discusses the previous month's practice. Take the Wellness Challenge, Feb. 2 to March 2!


Do you want to boost your well-being, have fun and earn a $10 gift certificate? Sign up for the Wellness Challenge to be held Feb. 2 to March 2! Last year 55 students, staff and faculty completed the Challenge and showed significant improvement on several measures of well-being. Participants select weekly activities to practice on their own from a menu based on the weekly themes: physical wellness, emotional wellness, spiritual wellness and social wellness. Activities span a broad range, so you can choose practices that are interesting and enjoyable to you. Time commitment is approximately one hour per week. Grant Support for Humanities and Social Sciences Senior Projects: Application Deadline Feb. 6


The Alpha Delta Phi Fund is designed to support senior essay writing, special topics and other comparable independent projects. All seniors in the humanities and social sciences may apply, but first priority is reserved for English majors and others working in literary studies, creative writing, theater and dance, or film. Monies from the David P. Patchel Memorial Fund can be used for projects having to do with the moving image specifically, whether essays, theses or production projects. Student Workers Needed for Men's Ice Hockey Game Management Over Interterm


We are looking for student workers to help manage the men's hockey games scheduled over break. You do not need any experience in order to work. You will be instructed by your supervisor prior to the game. Most positions require showing up an hour prior to game time. Each game lasts around two hours. Valley Mindfulness Offers Discount to Amherst College Faculty and Staff


Valley Mindfulness, in conjunction with the Department of Athletics, is pleased to announce that they are offering a 10 percent discount (off the current sliding-scale fee) on all Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) courses this winter and spring. All classes will take place at Indigo Yoga in Florence, Mass. There are two different eight-week courses starting in January, as well as more courses beginning in March. Interterm Wellness and Lifetime Fitness Classes!


The Department of Athletics is pleased to announce it will be offering a small number of classes this Interterm! Each week there will be yoga (vinyasa, "Start Your Day the Right Way," restorative), circuit training, H.I.I.T., "Skip to the Beat," "Weight Training 101" and "Tennis 101." Amherst College Fellowships Application Now Available-- Apply by Feb. 10


Seniors and recent graduates who wish to apply for an Amherst College Fellowship for graduate study in 2015-2016 may now access the application on the Office of Fellowships website. The deadline for application is Feb. 10. Prior acceptance to graduate school is not necessary for application, but you must be in the process of applying. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic merit and financial need. There is one application for all the different fellowships, and descriptions of each one are located in the Amherst College Course Catalog. This year the Kellogg Fellowship will be awarded. Selection is based solely on academic merit and provides significant funding for three consecutive years of graduate school. More information...

2015 Hitchcock Fellowship: Apply by Feb. 13


The Department of Physical Education and Athletics invites applications for the Hitchcock Fellowship for the 2015-2016 academic year. The Hitchcock Fellowship is awarded to a graduating senior who wishes to pursue a career in the field of athletics, primarily teaching and coaching. The Hitchcock Fellow will teach in the elective Physical Education program and be an assistant coach in at least two intercollegiate programs. The Hitchcock Fellow may be assigned and elect additional assignments in other areas of inquiry.
