This invention provides kilometer-long, endlessly parallel, spontaneously piezoelectric and thermally stable poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) ribbons using iterative size reduction technique based on thermal fiber drawing method. The PVDF ribbons are thermally stable and conserve the polar γ phase even after being exposed to heat treatment above the melting point of PVDF. A single PVDF ribbon has an average effective piezoelectric constant as −58.5 pm/V. PVDF ribbons in the invention are promising structures for constructing devices such as highly efficient energy generators, large area pressure sensors, artificial muscle and skin, due to the unique geometry and extended lengths, high polar phase content, high thermal stability and high piezoelectric coefficient.

At least 70% of the second phase includes droplets with an aspect ratio, when viewed in the plane of the surface of the substrate, of less than about 3.

A disposable strip in the assembly, upon wear, adheres to the skin and serves as a barrier to minimize transfer of particles. This low cost invention is stackable, easy to carry, suited for routine use and facilitates easy wear of the barrier strip by placing selective regions of the palm on the cards. The invention complements other common methods such as hand washing and hand sanitizing which are routinely used to maintain hygiene and differentiates itself from other related inventions. The strips after wear promote hygiene and minimize direct contact with particles, thus addressing some of the limitations of the existing methods.

The invention also pertains to a chemical installation comprising a metallic or concrete surface provided with a lining of a cured coating composition and to a coating composition suitable for providing a metallic or concrete surface of a chemical installation with a coating. It has been found that the coating composition of the present invention shows a wide application spectrum and a high chemical resistance.

The present disclosure provides a white ink comprising an aqueous ink vehicle, a white colorant, and latex particles. The colorant can consist essentially of metal oxide particles present at from 2 wt % to 50 wt %, can have an average particle size from 100 nm to 1000 nm, and can have a high refractive index from 1.8 to 2.8. The latex can be present in the ink at from 2 wt % to 20 wt %, can have a glass transition temperature from 0° C. to 130° C., and can have a low refractive index from 1.3 to 1.6. Borosilicate glasses are disclosed having (in weight %) 66-76% SiO2, 0-8% Al2O3, 10-18% B2O3, 0-4% Li2O, 0-12% Na2O, 0-12% K2O, 1-1.5% Ag, 1.5-2.5% Cl− and 0.01-0.06% of a summed amount of CuO and NiO, wherein the glass composition is bleachable upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation from a stable state color or shade to a lighter color or shade. Such reverse photochromic borosilicate glass compositions may be thermally darkenable. The borosilicate glasses may be strengthened via ion-exchange strengthening treatment. The borosilicate glasses may retain their reverse photochromic and thermally darkenable properties even after ion-exchange strengthening treatment.

Disclosed are methods for decapping single wall carbon nanotubes and purifying the decapped single wall carbon nanotubes. The disclosed methods include the steps of oxidizing the single wall carbon nanotubes to remove the terminal end cap and subsequently acid washing the single wall carbon nanotubes to remove the catalyst particles. The resulting carbon nanotubes have improved BET surface area and pore volume.

Co-cured urethane and vinyl ester, epoxy, or unsaturated polyester gel coats having improved toughness and flexibility compared with conventional polyester gel coats are disclosed. The gel coats, which have 10-50 wt. % urethane content, adhere well to structural layers and can be used in a traditional in-mold process. Co-cured elastomeric coatings comprising from 50 to 95 wt. % of a urethane component and an unsaturated polyester, epoxy, or vinyl ester are also disclosed. Unlike conventional urethane coatings, the elastomeric coatings adhere well to structural layers and can be used in a traditional in-mold process. Castings or structural layers comprising a reinforced thermoset of co-cured urethane and vinyl ester, epoxy, or unsaturated polyester components, including 10-95 wt. % of the urethane component, are also described. The invention includes in-mold processes for making laminates that utilize the gel coats, elastomeric coatings, and/or structural layers. The in-mold process gives flexible, durable, urethane-containing laminates having good interlayer adhesion.

A process for forming a film for dynamically vulcanized alloy comprising at least one elastomer dispersed within a thermoplastic resin domain wherein the film is characterized by low shrinkage rates after completion of the formation of the extruded film. The film has a shrinkage rate, measured at not earlier than 96 hours after formation of the film, of less than 1.5% relative to the film width as measured just after film formation. During formation of the film, the extruded film is subjected to a cooling rate of less than 97° C. per second and the frost line of the extruded film is greater than 135 mm.
