Best Winter Workout Gear Mon, 14 Nov 2011 22:57:43 +0000 Just because it's nippy out doesn't mean you need to look like the Michelin Man! When it's cold, blood flow is concentrated in your body's core, leaving your ears, hands, and toes vulnerable to frostbite. Keep 'em covered. "You can put chains on car tires—these are chains for your shoes!" says Olympian Deena Kastor. Perfect for ice and snow-packed trails. Even if you're hitting the roads, pick a trail shoe built for any surface. Wear warm socks made of a wicking fabric (like wool), suggests Galloway. Thin, fitted gloves made from a wicking fabric will keep hands dry and hold in heat. Add wind-blocking mittens on frigid days. These gloves have both features. Overdressing in the winter leads to excessive sweating. Wear thin layers you can shed based on the conditions and exercise intensity. This mesh-lined collar provides ventilation as you heat up. On wet and snowy days, a wind-resistant outer shell keeps you protected from the elements but allows excess heat and moisture to escape from the layers underneath. Look for base layers made from spandex-polyester blends, polypropylene, and merino wool. Unlike cotton, these fabrics wick moisture away from the skin and help regulate your body temperature. One lower-body layer is usually all you need. On extra-cold days or when you're heading to the hills, double up, says Anderson. RELATED: Cold-Weather Workout Tips

Memory Tricks: Now Where'd I Put That?! Mon, 03 Oct 2011 20:05:59 +0000 Umbrellas in cabs, rings at nail salons, cell chargers in hotel rooms… Whether you're scattered or organized, you've probably left something behind at some point. In fact, Americans are losing things more often than ever. For example, in 2006, the Utah Transit Authority reported that about 14,000 items were turned in to the lost and found; last year, the number jumped to about 19,000—almost a 36 percent increase. And a survey done at U.S. airports found that 11,748 laptops and other wireless devices were lost in the past year. "In this tech-driven, multitasking world, we are more likely to get distracted and lose things as a result," says Florence Meleo-Meyer, a director at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Formaldehyde in Cosmetics: What’s the Verdict? Mon, 03 Oct 2011 18:35:46 +0000 Content safe cosmetics Metadata Formaldehyde in Cosmetics: What’s the Verdict? Toxic chemicals in cosmetics are a real threat to your health. Here's what has experts worried about formaldehyde in cosmetic treatments such as the Brazilian Blowout safe cosmetics database, chemicals cosmetics, cosmetic chemicals, formaldehyde, formalin BYLINE Lisette Mejia Jupiterimages/ThinkStock It's no secret that some cosmetics contain chemicals, although recognizing which ones are harmful at what levels may be as difficult as pronouncing the chemicals themselves (just try saying phthalates out loud). But cosmetic treatments like the Brazilian Blowout are under heavy fire lately for their use of formaldehyde, a chemical the U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially classifies as a carcinogen. So are you hair treatments, manicures, and even lotions giving you cancer? Here, your formaldehyde questions answered: What is formaldehyde? Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas often used in cosmetics. (FYI, it’s also often used in the production of fertilizer, paper, and plywood, as well as used as a preservative in antiseptics and medicine, among other products.) It’s most commonly used as a water solution called formalin, rather than in its pure form. With the help of preservatives, formaldehyde is released in small amounts over time to help protect cosmetic products against contamination by bacteria during storage and during continued use. Common formaldehyde releasers include quaternium-15 and DMDM hydantoin. What cosmetics contain formaldehyde? Formaldehyde can be found in nail polishes, nail hardeners, eyelash glues, hair gels, soaps, makeup, shampoos, lotions, and deodorants, among other products. An article published in the April 2010 volume of Contact Dermatitis looking at products from the FDA’s Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program database found that nearly 20 percent of products contained formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. The two known categories of products with the most formaldehyde are hair straightening treatments and nail hardeners. What are the dangers of formaldehyde? The most common side effect of formaldehyde in cosmetics is skin irritation, including scalp burns and hair loss, according to Alexandra Scranton, Director of Science and Research for Women's Voices for the Earth, a national organization that works to eliminate toxic chemicals impacting women’s health. But that's not very likely with the low levels typically found in cosmetics, unless a person is highly sensitive to the substance, she says. Plus, low levels of formaldehyde have been found to cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. But the major concern is that formaldehyde causes cancer. The National Toxicology Program’s June report classified formaldehyde as a carcinogen under conditions with high or prolonged exposure—conditions typical for industrial workers and professional groups, including embalmers and even salon workers. These exposures typically do not occur in cosmetic and personal care products. Hair smoothing treatments like the Brazilian Blowout came under fire earlier this year when the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration warned that its products contained unacceptable levels of formaldehyde. In some cases, salon workers complained of nose bleeds, eye irritation, and trouble breathing after using the products. In September, the FDA sent a lett[...]

Running Safety: Reese Witherspoon Hit By a Car While Running Thu, 08 Sep 2011 17:35:09 +0000 Content running safety Metadata Running Safety: Reese Witherspoon Hit By a Car While Running Reese Witherspoon was hit by a car while running. Here are running safety tips from Women's Health. Reese Witherspoon, running, running safety, women's health, women's health magazine BYLINE Susan Rinkunas photo: Splash News Listen up, outdoor exercisers: Actress Reese Witherspoon was hit by a car Wednesday while running in Santa Monica but luckily, she suffered only minor injuries. According to the L.A. Times, Witherspoon was running in a residential area when she was struck by a car traveling around 20 mph that failed to yield to her at an intersection. Witherspoon was taken to a hospital for treatment and was released a few hours later. The 84-year-old driver was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. US Weekly reports that the actress has a quarter-sized gash on her forehead and that a large tree near the intersection could have impeded the driver's view. No reports mention whether Witherspoon was running with earbuds, as she has often been photographed doing. Sadly, runners, walkers, and cyclists get hit by cars more often than you'd think—and sometimes with greater consequences. Here's how you can stay safe while getting your sweat on outdoors. How to Stay Safe on the Roads 1. Run or walk on the sidewalk wherever possible. Though it’s legal in many states for pedestrians to use the roads or sidewalks, it’s always good to have some space between you and multi-ton moving objects. 2. If there is no sidewalk, run facing traffic. In the absence of a sidewalk, the safest place to run is on the left side of the road, where drivers can see you and you can see cars approaching. Cyclists, on the other hand, should bike WITH traffic. 3. Turn down the music. A lot of runners listen to music, and that’s fine—it can even help you run longer or faster. But do yourself a favor and keep the volume low or only use one ear bud so you can hear approaching cars and people. Running with headphones can also draw your attention away from the ground in front of you and you could end up tripping over an unnoticed branch or rock. 4. Assume that drivers don’t see you. Even if it’s broad daylight and you’re running in a marked pedestrian crossing, it’s best to wait to proceed until A) you make eye contact with the driver and they stop or wave you on or B) you wait for them to pass. 5. Beware of blind turns. If you can’t see around a curve, neither can a driver coming the other way. About 300 feet before the curve, cross to the right side of the road. When the road straightens (and traffic permits), return to the left side. 6. Carry ID. If something were to happen on a run and medical professionals were called, most people would be unidentifiable. Tuck your driver’s license in a pocket or get a bracelet or shoe pouch with an ID plate from sites like RoadID.com. This is even more important for people with medical conditions or drug allergies. And, if it makes you feel safer, carry your cell phone. 7. Wear bright or reflective clothing. If you run in the early morning or evening, wear clothing that’s bright or has refl[...] |
