Scholarship Application Strategies - Part 2 Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:13:00 +0000 Create Success: Find Money for College If you are just looking for easy money, the truth is winning scholarships may be difficult to obtain. But if you are attempting to distinguish yourself from your peers, set a standard for excellence, and ease the financial burden of funding your education so that you can focus on your studies, you have a much better chance at succeeding. Before you begin your scholarship search remember that success is created, not found. Likewise, money is earned and, not surprisingly, typically follows success. How to Create Success : Research. Research the scholarship opportunities available to you. You should have a good idea about what your options are before you begin submitting scholarship applications. There are millions of scholarships available, but you won't qualify for all of them. Gathering information about your options should help you prioritize the offers in which you are interested. Prepare. Research should give you an idea of the criteria for the scholarships for which you qualify. If you fall short in any areas like community service or extracurricular activities, get involved while you have the chance, and establish a background in these areas. Additionally, build your writing skills. This is critical because most merit scholarships require that you respond to an essay question or submit a writing sample. Prepare a couple of solid essays on vanilla topics like your future goals or interests. These are good practice, and you might even be able to use them for some of the essay scholarships for which you are applying. Organize. Many scholarships will require you to submit the following articles:
Submit. Submit your portfolios to the scholarship providers in whose awards you are interested. If you choose to send your scholarship application by mail, be sure that the address is correct. Follow the guidelines, and be certain that you meet all of the criteria for a specific scholarship so that you don't waste your time.[...]

It sounds easy, because it actually is easy to apply for scholarships. Some may require you to put in some time, but once you've completed an application or two, I think you might find it will get easier and take less time with each additional one. Don’t psych yourself out or let yourself get overwhelmed by all you need to do before you graduate high school. Start early and work diligently and it will pay off. You may even find some of the work you do can be applied to multiple scholarship applications- such as an essay or writing sample. Source information: www.scholarships.com

The Differences Between American, British, And Australian English Sat, 13 Dec 2008 12:30:00 +0000 Australia, Great Britain, and America all speak the same language, but you simply have to visit each country to realize that, while they all speak English, it is far from a universal language. The English spoken in Great Britain, America, and Australia has many similarities, but a surprising number of differences as well. The main reason for this is the vast distance between each country. Here are some of the common differences you will find between these three versions of English. Pronunciation Differences Pronunciation between the three types of English is very dissimilar. In American English the "r" at the end of the word almost always affects its pronunciation, whereas in Australian and British English the "r" is often silent. Also, the emphasis placed on the syllables of the word varies from British, Australian, and American English. In Britain, the world adult has the emphasis on the first syllable, whereas in America it is placed on the second half of the word. Australian English is unique in the fact that many words have sounds that are eliminated. Instead of saying good day, the Australian speaker says g'day. The main pronunciation difference between the three, however, is the pronunciation of the vowel sounds. Differences in Spelling Not only do the three types of English sound different, but they are also spelled differently. In some ways, the spelling reflects the difference in pronunciation. For instance, Americans use the world airplane to refer to a flying mode of transportation. In Great Britain, the word is aeroplane, and it is pronounced with an audible "o" sound. Another common difference in spelling is aluminium, which is the UK spelling, and aluminum, the US spelling. Again, the difference shows the difference in pronunciation of the two words. In this instance the Australian spelling is the same as the UK spelling. Another common spelling difference between UK English and American English is the use of -our verses -or at the end of the word. For instance, in the UK, colour, flavour, honour, and similar words all end in -our, whereas in America they are spelled with the -or ending (color, flavor, honor). In Australia, the -our spelling is almost universal. Similarly, the endings -re and -re are different between the different English dialects. In America you will go to the theater or fitness center, whereas in Britain you will visit the theatre or fitness centre. Again, Australian English follows the British pattern. There are other common spelling differences as well. For instance, in American English, words that sound as though they end with an -ize will always end in an -ize. However, in UK English, they typically end in ise (i.e. realize, realise). Also, British English often doubles consonants when adding a suffix when American English does not, such as in the world traveller. [...]

Create a Teacher Website that Works for You Sun, 07 Dec 2008 16:26:00 +0000 People today are busy, and teachers are no exception. Either are students and parents for that matter. We all want information quick, easy, and pertinent. And that is exactly what a teacher website must do. If your classroom webpage isn't making your job easier, or helping you do it better, maybe its time to evaluate and consider some changes. If it fails, then valuable time, and maybe resources, are being spent without accomplishing an important goal. One way to help you achieve this is to use a service that allows you to create your own site (such as www.silabus-rpp.blogspot.com)
Information Quick: Daily updates are a must. Remember, a student that is absent may want to check your site for the night's homework assignment. Well, he may not, but his parents will. The information must be posted promptly. Reserve time before class to update your site. If properly planned, just a few minutes should be all that is needed. If possible, get your class involved. If they can update some pages, it can become a rotating, class job. Information Easy: Don't bury the important information two, three, or more levels deep into your site. If it's important, link from the homepage or put it on the homepage. A consistent place that is easy to navigate to will ensure that users will always see your key messages. As users, we can get discouraged when we can’t find what we are looking for. That shouldn’t be the case with your students. Information Pertinent: We are bombarded with information online. Popups, advertisements, videos, and websites of every flavor are competing for our attention. Nothing is as welcome to a user as a crisp, clear message. Do away with space wasters such as visit counters and unnecessary graphics or games. The bottom line - any and all features of your web site must be there because they help you do your job in some way. As a busy educator, you probably have little time to devote to creating, and nurturing your classroom website. But it is becoming an essential tool. So, make sure that your content addresses problems, or areas you want to improve. Are too many of your students not doing their homework? Are they not getting the desired outcomes from lessons? Do you need more parent involvement? All of these, and other, questions should be considered when you are creating or modifying your website. If you take the time to make sure your website provides quick, easy, and pertinent information, your site will work for you - making your job easier and helping you do it better.

What Is A Good Teacher Lesson Plan? Mon, 17 Nov 2008 05:49:00 +0000 Writing a new and innovative teacher lesson plan for every class can be tiring, and many teachers report that this is their least favorite part of their jobs. Unfortunately, most public schools require that teachers work from plans instead of just from the top of their head. The reason for this is consistent education and, while most teachers understand this, it doesn't make the lessons any easier to write. Luckily, there are many tools available that will help even the most frustrated educator create better lessons.
Many teachers will attempt to take courses on how to write a better teacher lesson plan. This is a great way to get some templates or forms to help with the process. If nothing else, many teachers find that they need to be better organized when writing their plans. Organization is key to making the lessons flow and be something that teachers would not only submit to their supervisors but would also be proud to teach to their students. Well written lessons don't have to be difficult to write, but it is time consuming and it is easy to see how many teachers are on the verge of pulling their hair out when they are done. Other tools that teachers may use to aide them in writing a teacher lesson plan are planning books, templates, forms, and even computer programs. Programs that utilize computers are the latest craze, as many are very versatile. Many teachers like to buy programs that have all of the forms and such that they need so all they have to do is input information and teach. This is a very practical way to go about it, because the computer will help you stay organized and there is no dealing with confusing forms to make the process even more difficult. In addition to these tools, many teachers find that if they supplement their teacher lesson plan with plans that have already been created for them, they feel a lot less stressed. There are tools available to teachers right now that can provide them with the templates they need in addition to the fully planned lessons that will give them a break when they need it. These allow teachers to turn on the computer and teach instead of refining their plans again and again and feeling the stress that goes along with that. This type of teaching is becoming very popular among educators of every level. Author: Iprwire Staff Writer
Boring After School Activities Sat, 15 Nov 2008 07:53:00 +0000 Why does Lisa grumble when it is time for her to go for her piano lessons? How come Johnny abhors the sight of his skates now? After all, these children were very enthusiastic about the programs when they started off. What happened? Parents are often confused by the disturbing and often incongruous signals they receive from their children. One day the kids are excited about the new theatre class and in just a few short weeks they wail and moan when it's time to go. The first thing a family should do when a child begins resisting a previously loved activity is to listen and investigate. Do not jump into conclusions. A little bit of intelligent sleuthing is required. Ask your child what he or she does in the class. Find out what exactly is the cause of the problem. Then ask the teachers the same questions. Compare notes. You may stumble on some important clues. Usually, children start out on an activity thinking it's all fun. But when they realize that they cannot just hang out and that they need to follow rules etc, they begin to resist. Your child may feel stifled if the program is too structured. If the discipline is too rigorous or the activity too painful (like a karate class) some children balk. Use your own instincts. Does the program feel like fun? Would you want to attend it yourself? Are they offering enough motivation to keep the child interested?
The teacher-to-child ratio is also an important factor. Children need attention. If the number of teachers is just enough to handle a class, it is possible that your child is not receiving enough attention. State recommendations usually specify that there must be 1 teacher for 15 children. Children try to avoid problems they cannot solve. If there are no perceivable problems with the class and the teachers, perhaps you need to have a chat with your child. If your judgment says that the place is good and the activity engaging enough, then it's time to work with your child. More often than not, social pressures may be at work here. Does your child have friends there? If she is lonely or miserable because of the lack of friends, help her find a friend. If she finds a friend, she will get more involved in the activities If your best efforts do not pay off, and your child still resists that fantastic guitar classes, then it's time to let go. Shift your child to some other program. If he or she still retains interest in guitars, you can take it up after a few months. Never force the child, especially when it comes to extra-curricular activities. Since they are 'extra', they must bring in extra happiness and extra enthusiasm too.
Thank You Gifts For Teachers Sat, 15 Nov 2008 07:46:00 +0000 Teachers add so much to our lives and guide out children with special attention. It always nice to give an appreciation for their thoughtfulness and caring. But what gift would be appropriate and not overwhelm the teacher? Here a just a few: 1. Fill a basket with things they will need and use all year. Add pens, pencils, notepads, stickers, boxes of staples and paperclips.
2. Wrap a coffee can with colorful paper and add three or four of your favorite home baked cookies. The plastic lid will keep them fresh for days. 3. Teachers often burn the midnight candle as they read reports and grade papers. Fill a basket with bags of munchies like peanuts, chips, popcorn. 4. Make a donation to the local zoo or library in your teacher’s name. Put the donation card in with a note expressing your appreciation. 5. Teachers are always reading. Get a gift certificate or card at your local book store and enclose it in a note of your appreciation for their help. 6. Get a apple made of cloth and filled with soft fibers. Have every member of the class sign the apple in ink. 7. Teachers are always carrying books and papers. Find a satchel bag with an apple or red, white, and blue flag design. Or make a bag with all the school colors. 8. At the local bookstore, find a bookmark that says what a great teacher he is. Or one that has apples running the length of the bookmark. You may be able to find one with dunce hats or take another plain bookmark and add dunce hat stickers to it. 9. Buy a glass or ceramic mug and have your child paint an apple and his name on the side. 10. Have your child create a pencil cup by decorating a juice can with brightly colored tissue paper. www.freearticles.com

15 Secrets To Boost Your I.Q In Less Than 30 Days
Wed, 12 Nov 2008 08:16:00 +0000 The same reason that people visit the gym on a regular basis, is probably the same reason you’re interested in raising your IQ. We just aren’t challenged enough physically or mentally. Setting aside time to work your mind out and organizing your various mental muscles can help you to be more creative, solve problems quicker and focus on the things you want. Contrary to what most people believe, brainpower goes beyond inherited genes. Scientists have proven that intelligence is a combination of both genes and environment. When laboratory rats were given more toys to interact with, they ended up having much smarter rats than the ones that did not have any toys. Studies have also shown that you can grow more neurons with a stimulating environment. The benefits of being mentally fit are very obvious. You’ll be able to enjoy accelerated learning. If you’re in high school, college or attend a university, you may find yourself having an easier time of your studies and your grade point average raising. You’ll also find yourself being able to think logically more often. You’ll be able to assemble a clear line of logic and reasoning that can help you make better decisions in life. Another benefit is that of increased creativity. Whether you’re into music, art, writing or any other form of art, training your mind can definitely open the flood gates of creativity in those areas as well. In addition, your memory and focus will increase. Training with certain kinds of memory tools such as pegging and linking can help you uncover new ways to store information permanently and have an easier time of recalling things. Through meditation, your focus can improve greatly. You can start by meditating 10 or 15 minutes a day. Simply find a quiet place and sit or lay completely still, with eyes closed. Then, as much as possible, quiet your mind and focus on your breathing. If you’re not used to doing this, it may be extremely difficult. That’s ok. The more you do it, the easier it gets. As you stick with it, you’ll notice some very big improvements of being able to hold ideas and imagines in your mind much longer and stronger. So how can you boost your IQ in less than 30 days? Here are the key secrets: 1. Write – when you write down your thoughts, it can be a great tool for you to reflect and make decisions. Some people use journals to write down their thoughts, others have simple notepads or notebooks. Simply writing what you think and feel can help you have a new perspective when you go back and read those words. 2. Meditate – as already stated, you can significantly boost your IQ through meditation. It may not seem logical, that you could boost your IQ by thinking about nothing at all, but it does help you bridge a connection from your conscious to your subconscious mind. And the subconscious stores every bit of data of our lives. Nothing is lost to the subconscious. 3. Be active – if you’re not already active, start a regular exercise routine. Having a healthy body also affects the mind. <[...]
Get Started Learning English Online Free Mon, 10 Nov 2008 07:53:00 +0000 If you do not have any knowledge of English or if your exposure to the language has been minimal, you can avail of an English online free course. The course starts with the basics for beginners so that even a child (with the help of an adult) can take this course and become a fluent speaker and writer. It is not enough to be able to speak the language. You have to be able to write English as well so that you can correspond and communicate in many different ways. This will be advantageous to you if you plan to love or travel to an English speaking country and especially if you want to do business in such a country. The beginning grammar lessons in an online English course start off with the basics. You will learn how to use one of the main verbs in the English language ?to be. In this lesson, you will hear and read short presentation dialogues and then receive instruction as to how to use these verbs. There will also be a list of vocabulary words used in the lesson and the grammar exercises provide short sentences for which you have to fill in the correct verb. Then you can take the quiz to see how well you have done in the lesson. Even though the focus of the lesson is on the conjugation of the verb be? you receive exposure to other facets of the language, such as the placement of verbs in a sentence, the pronouns used with the verbs and the punctuation at the end of the sentence. The lessons in an online English course are like building blocks. Each one builds on the previous lesson, so that what you learn in one lesson will help you in the subsequent ones. You can review the material as often as you wish and complete the practice exercises and quizzes as many times as you feel you need to until you are comfortable that you understand the concept. There are listening exercises to go along with the topics as well, so in this way you get a double dose of the material as well as exposure to listening to native English speakers. Learning online is also fun with the many games and other resources available to you. Games are a part of learning English, even with native speakers. Through vocabulary and word games you increase your vocabulary with the thousands of words used in these ways. As you advance through the course, you can utilize many other resources, such as reading short books in English at your own pace. You can even test yourself with how you speak the language by recording your speech and them comparing it with the speakers for the passages.
