Nostalgic Friday: Dr. Seuss Favorites

2012-03-05T00:44:20.290-08:00

Welcome back to Nostalgic Friday! Since I love all things historical (culturally, physically, and personally) I do a post on Fridays honoring some awesome book that is a bit older. Many of them are books I enjoyed in my teens and others are books that I discovered as an adult that I think are relevant to YA readers. This week I am featuring 3 of my all-time favorite Dr. Seuss books: And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street (first published 1937), Oh the Places You'll Go (1990), and The Lorax (1971). I truly believe that while Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel intended most of his books for children, there is something that everyone can take away from one of his books. And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street has become a recent favorite of mine because of my "Lil' Sis" class from my alma mater. MC Class of 2010's senior year Cornhuskin' theme was based around this book and after seeing their beautiful and humorous twist I checked out the original. The story follows a young child as he walks down Mulberry Street. He's been instructed to keep his eyes open for anything interesting, but all he sees are the daily standards. So he starts dreaming up all the wild and crazy things that could happen on the street. It's a wonderful book about children's imaginations and what they're capable of.Oh the Places You'll Go is a fantastic book about moving on. It was first read to me on the first day of 10th grade. That year changed my life and there's no way I'd rather have it. This book started that year off right. But it doesn't really matter if you're changing jobs, graduating (from anything) or if you're getting married, everyone can take away a new perspective on their future after reading this book. A quote:You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourselfany direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. This book means so much to me and I read it whenever I'm feeling down about where life is taking me. It's really helped me adjust to stressful changes in my life. Finally, my most favoritest Dr. Seuss book ever is The Lorax. Ever since I was a child, and saw The Lorax short film on t.v., I have been in love with this story. The destruction and devastation were a necessary evil in order to create a story for the lorax. It was amazing to see how the lorax never gave up no matter how much his enemy ignored him. Even in the end, he leaves a bit of himself behind so that the fight will continue on long after he has given in. Something about that just really stuck with me as a kid and I tend to agree with the lorax. An amazing story that I love, I think I might even incorporate it on my literary half-sleeve (tattoo) that I've been planning forever.A classic writer with much more to offer, there's a Dr. Seuss book for everyone. What is your favorite or if you haven't read any, where would you like to start?[...]

Author Event: Estevan Vega at my library!!

2012-03-05T00:44:20.291-08:00

(image) Can I tell you all how amazing and wonderful it was to host the enigmatic, witty, & amusing Estevan Vega at my local library?! This guy was on fire (no pun intended) about his book Arson. He talked about his writing style, how he came in to writing (who knew parents could use peer pressure in a good way?), what he's up to in college, & what he foresees in his future work.

After writing short stories with his father, Estevan decided to write out his first novel at the tender age of 12. He was fortunate enough to have Servant of the Realm published at the ripe old age of 16. His next endeavor, The Sacred Sin, was published just two years later. Finally, his first teen novel appeared this year and is the subject of much acclaim. While he is considered by many a rising star that audiences should keep an eye on, Estevan is very humble about his work. He says that sometimes "there's just a story itching to come" and that sometimes it's "just not time for the story to be written yet." The time for Arson began four years ago & he is thrilled to have come full circle on his wish to have it published.
(image)
Estevan was very engaging with the audience as he would ask and answer questions all over the place and really made his visit more like a friendly chat. It was quite informal and the audience just ate it up! There were questions regarding the "metaphor of the mask on the book cover" and more basic questions like "do you use pen and paper or a laptop". He even brought a gift for two lucky audience members. They received a signed movie poster of the Arson cover!

Overall it was a wonderful event and I truly appreciate Estevan (and his driving cohort Travis!!) coming all the way down to Raleigh. Hopefully I can have him back down here when the sequel to Arson gets published. :D Check back for my review of Arson soon!!

Waiting on Wednesday: Claire de Lune

2012-03-05T00:44:20.291-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

(image) This week's selection is Claire de Lune by Christine Johnson and is set to be released May 18, 2010.

Christine Johnson’s CLAIRE DE LUNE, in which a teenager learns that she is a werewolf, descended from a long line of female werewolves, and must balance her human and werewolf lives, while tracking down the rogue werewolf preying upon the people of her town.
-From Goodreads

I am a fan of werewolves more so than vampires and I love female leads. The fact that this book combines both of those (and an amazing song title as the book title) leads me to have high hopes for this book. Also, I am interested to see what kind of werewolves these are. There are different mythologies that exist depending on where the story "originates" from and when. Shiver for example threw us a curve ball with its mythology, while Never Cry Werewolf was more of the traditional mythology. Here's hoping!

MENTAL MONTAGE: The Rat-Race of Race

2012-03-05T00:44:20.291-08:00

The integration of different races into our cinematic culture has been a lengthy and complicated battle. The appearance of racial minorities in early film was both rare and heavily stereotyped. It comes as no surprise that in the days of segregation, movies too were segregated, thus the faces from the golden studio era that we remember are only intermittently peppered with non-Caucasian faces. Even when a role called for a specific race or ethnicity that was outside of the Anglo-Norman norm, the character was portrayed for the most part by a white actor in make-up. Lon Chaney was praised for his incredible metamorphoses in Shadows, Outside the Law, and Mr. Wu, in which he defied stereotype and inserted great humanity and depth into his portrayal of different Chinese characters. Warner Oland (left) for years made his career by portraying Charlie Chan, and even Myrna Loy cut her teeth in cinema by playing Asian temptresses in films like The Mask of Fu Manchu opposite Boris Karloff. While these performers are to be commended for their sensitive interpretations, it does not take the edge off a rusty blade. For example, Chinese actress Anna May Wong (above in Piccadilly)was forced to watch as the heroine O-Lan in The Good Earth was portrayed by Luise Rainier in "yellow-face" rather than by herself, an authentic Chinese woman. (Rainer won the Oscar for her performance). Anna was primarily offered the roles of venomous villainesses; the lead roles of long-suffering heroines went to white actresses in makeup, who could legally perform in love scenes with white actors. Anna was unable to engage in interracial romances on the silver screen, even if the actor performing with her were portraying a Chinese character. Still, Anna May paved the way for future Asian actresses, heightening her place in film through her nuanced and insightful portrayals. In a great show of character, she turned down the role of "Lotus," the evil siren of The Good Earth, after the role of O-Lan, which she craved and rightfully deserved, went to Ms. Rainer. Anna had talent, but she also had pride! Even after an actor or actress such as Anna May Wong, Paul Robeson, or the lovely-- and already greatly missed-- Lena Horne had established themselves as respected and accepted members of the acting community, they faced their trials. Hattie McDaniel (left) was the first African American to win an Academy Award (for her supporting role as "Mammy" in Gone with the Wind). Her charismatic nature and jovial personality defied her stereotyped roles and endeared her to audiences so much that she became as famous and adored as her Caucasian contemporaries. Even her contender for her 1939 Oscar win, co-star Olivia de Havilland, would admit that the prize was rightfully bestowed. Despite all of this, Hattie would still have to combat prejudice. Her one wish upon her death was to be buried in a shiny, white coffin at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the same place where so many of her acting contemporaries and predecessors had been laid to rest. However, even in death, Hattie's skin color did not qualify her as an equal. She was denied interment at the cemetery, and instead was laid to rest at the more racially friendly Angelus Rosedale Cemetery (ironically, the same place where Anna May Wong would be buried). Years later, to correct the terrible wrong that was done, Hattie's relatives were offered the opportunity to have her finally placed at Hollywood Forever, but since so much time had passed, and they did not wish to upset her body, she was left at Rosedale, buried not far from her brother Sam and actor Dooley Wilson, remembered best for his role as Sam in Casablanca. Instead, Hollywood Forever, and more specifically new owner Tyler Cassity, placed a monument dedicated to Hattie right next to the cemetery's pond, so at least in this small way justice could be done to one of cinema's most charming individuals.Hatties resting place [...]

Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols

2012-03-05T00:44:20.292-08:00

Blue-haired, girl-felon seeks hard-working, semi-stable cop. Wait, huh? Meg is just your typical teenage rebellion with a wild side a mile long and more arrests and tickets than any parent wants to believe. Her bad attitude and outlandish hair keep everyone at bay so she can have some peace. Doing what she wants, as she sees fit, is just part of life to her. That's where Eric comes in. The rebellious, drug-imbibing, son of a lawyer gives Meg what she wants when she wants it. That's exactly what they were up to the night they got arrested.Officer John After routinely patrols the "No Trespassing" bridge that trains cross over. It's a compulsory habit. So the night he catches Meg, Eric and two other teens out on the bridge is no coincidence. Officer After wants to make sure these teens learn their lesson about following the law. So he strikes up a deal with the DA to make them all ride along with the local emergency service crews during Spring Break; except for Eric, whose daddy gets him off the hook. Lucky for Meg she gets stuck on the overnight shift with Officer After.Pretty soon though, Officer After is revealed to be Johnafter from high school. He's only a year older than Meg, but he's already graduated from the police academy and is on patrol duty. This provides Meg with an endless supply of ammo to poke holes in his armor. She knows that he was captain of the track team and quite decent at art and starts questioning his choice of immediate profession. Over the course of the week, Meg and Johnafter start to develop an understanding of one another based on her passive aggressive (and sometimes out right aggressive) tactics and his bob-and-weave maneuvers. It's clear that something's gotta give between these two if their little town is to survive.A no-holds-barred, anti-punch-pulling novel, Going Too Far is in a word: amazing. Meg is such a badass chick who apologizes for nothing. I found her tough outer appearance very abrasive (which was the point) but it also set up an alarm that there was something else going on behind that front. I have found that people are not usually that rough and tumble unless they are hiding something. And boy does she have a whopper of a secret!Johnafter was as secretive and mysterious as Meg, only in a different manner. He wasn't as "in your face" about much, except when it came to the law. He took his job and himself very seriously and it was something that I rarely see in a character. There was so much too him and yet so little at the same time. The base storyline was kind of obvious, but the execution of action was more nuanced and unexpected. I kept thinking that it was going to go one way and then it ended up going another. Their situation was a unique one in that, only in a smaller town would a suitable punishment for trespassing in a dangerous area be to ride along with emergency service crews for spring break. The character interactions were colorful and entertaining, while still maintaining a sometimes serious tone. This book is great for fans of realistic fiction (obviously) and those who have enjoyed other books like Perfect Chemistry, Lock and Key, or The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove will find this story very much to their liking. I couldn't put it down and read it in less than a day, I truly recommend this to anyone and everyone.[...]

Nostalgic Friday: Nancy Drew

2012-03-05T00:44:20.292-08:00

(image) Welcome back to Nostalgic Friday! Since I love all things historical (culturally, physically, and personally) I do a post on Fridays honoring some awesome book that is a bit older. Many of them are books I enjoyed in my teens and others are books that I discovered as an adult that I think are relevant to YA readers.

(image) This week I am featuring one of the most popular children's series for girls that dates all the way back to the 1930's. That's right, Nancy Drew. The quintessential sleuthing gal has been around for eight decades and has yet to lose her charm. I don't think the original creator (Edward Stratemeyer) knew what he was getting into when he created the lovable and wildly entertaining Nancy Drew in the late 1920's. He had already created the Hardy Boys series and wanted to create something like that for girls and that's exactly what he did. The novels have been ghost-written by many different authors over the years all under the same pseudonym of Carolyn Keene.

These stories, and their many incarnations, revolve around the mystery-solving 16 year old (18 depending on the year of publication) Nancy Drew, daughter of lawyer Carson Drew, in the fictional town of River Heights. Nancy either stumbles on to mysterious goings-on or picks up the cold trail on one of her father's cases as a way to pass the time because we never see her in school or with a job. Despite her lack of a maternal presence, as her mother died when Nancy was quite young, Nancy manages to be accomplished at almost everything she tries. Cooking, sewing, driving, motorboating, and even marksmanship seem to come naturally to her. All these things, along with best friends/co-conspirators, like Bess Marvin & George Fayne, allow Nancy the freedom and ability to pursue her sleuthing hobby. Some of my personal favorites are: The Hidden Inheritance, Nancy's Mysterious Letter, & The Spider Sapphire Mystery.

What's truly amazing about Nancy Drew is her ability to work in multiple formats. Not only has she appeared in multiple book series, sometimes even crossing over with the Hardy Boys, she has movies, video games, and graphic novels. Her constant morphing into new formats has kept her accessible and open to each generation. Check out one of them if you haven't yet. They're so worth it!

Rules of Attraction by Simone Elkeles

2012-03-05T00:44:20.292-08:00

Potential mild-spoilers may follow if you haven't read Perfect Chemistry. Be sure to check my review of that here before continuing. Just in case.Carlos Fuentes likes to think he is nothing like his brother Alex. Carlos is tougher, is taking better care of the family in Mexico than Alex did in Chicago, and Carlos is a one-man show with no extra baggage to worry about. So then why is it so hard for Carlos not to follow in Alex's footsteps. After getting in trouble with the local gang in Mexico, Carlos is sent to Alex in Colorado to be straightened out and finish up his last year of high school. Carlos of course has no intention of listening to his brother's warnings and decides to continue living his life on the edge and doing whatever makes his feel numb. Unfortunately those activities land him on the local drug lord's radar. When Carlos is caught with a substantial amount of drugs, he's sentenced to completing an after-school enrichment program and living with a guardian, who just so happens to be Alex's former college professor. The professor has a lovely home with a tea-house-running wife, a rambunctious six-year-old son named Brandon, and a frumpy-looking senior-in-high-school daughter named Kiara. Things are starting to look up for Carlos. As he continues to rebel and push those nearest to him away, Kiara dares to push Carlos back. She's certainly not afraid of him and manages to pique Carlos's interest. Too bad the local drug lord isn't letting Carlos go easily. Can he protect those he cares for without having to destroy everything? This is the exciting second volume in the Perfect Chemistry trilogy starring the mesmerizing and scrumptiously yummy Fuentes brothers. While each book can be read as a stand alone novel, it helps to have read the first one for the back story that is referenced in this book. Simone Elkeles really knows what she's doing with this series. The characters are hauntingly accurate and enticingly fascinating. They are all very unique individuals with their own hidden talents. Believe me, there were a few surprise abilities that were showcased in this novel. The storyline was along the same lines as the first novel with a change in setting and ending mostly. I found that, while basically the same, Carlos was more ardent in his need to prove himself to everyone than Alex was in the first novel, but the girls were opposites. Kiara was much more personally vulnerable than I ever imagined Brittany. Yet in a way, Kiara's vulnerability made her more accessible to the reader. The strength that emanates from the main characters is just phenomenal and something that I think more people should possess. While there were a few plotlines that dropped off and left me wondering what happened to them (the obligatory mean girl went poof, etc) I found that they didn't bother me as much as usual because they allowed Simone to focus more on the important part of the story. A pleasurable read that I'm sure I'll visit time and time again, Rules of Attraction is a wonderfully pleasant book that I think fans of Sarah Dessen and Jennifer Echols will appreciate. Be sure to check out my thoughts on Perfect Chemistry if you haven't already.P.S. I LOVE this cover so much. I really want a poster size version of it, but haven't managed that yet. Next on my to-do list after moving. :)[...]

Feminine Cute & Sexy Tattoos For Women - Tattoos Designs For Girls on the Foot, Ankle & Wrist

2012-03-05T00:44:20.292-08:00

Every girl wants to have a great looking tattoo design that enhances their overall look. However, finding feminine and cute tattoos for women can at times be frustrating. Searching online or at your local tattoo shop for the right ankle or foot tattoo can be hard. It sometimes takes hours of searching to come up short. Here is a list of ideas to get your own thoughts flowing. It is not a complete or exhaustive list of tattoo designs for girls by any means but it at least gives you some great ideas and locations to get a tattoo design and how to make it cute, feminine and sexy all at the same time.Possible DesignsThere or course are a ton of designs out there and what you pick is a matter of person choice. What one person thinks is cute or sexy might be different then another person. So whenever choosing a tattoo design it is important to pick something for you and not for anyone else. In other words don't pick a tattoo because your friend likes or doesn't like it but pick a design that you think is feminine or sexy or whatever look you are after. These are just some popular ideas.Cherry Blossoms - Cherry blossoms make a great tattoo that can be done in a pretty small location such as a wrist or foot or even around an ankle. Cherry blossoms are a beautiful lower that symbolizes the beauty and shortness of life and it is a symbol that is meant to remind the person to live life to the fullest.Fairy Tattoos - Fairies work great in just about any location on the body. If you are not sure about the foot or ankle a fairy design can easily be done on the hip, shoulder or just about anywhere. The other great thing about a fairy is it doesn't necessarily have a meaning already ascribed to it. It is more about the design and look of the fairy that you choose. You can go for a shy coy fairy or a sexy hot fairy or even an evil scary looking fairy if you want something tough.Tribal Designs - Tribal designs are typically more the domain of men. However, more and more women are choosing traditionally male designs and femininzing them. It is not really a word but it best describes the process of taking a tattoo and adding a cute feminine touch to it. So instead of a think black line tribal design one might chose something with more swirls and color to it and make it look cute. Tribal tattoos make good bracelet designs that wrap around an ankle or wrist but can also be done on the top of the foot or just about anywhere else.Star Tattoos - Star tattoos have always been popular among women. You can get a cute cluster of small stars just about anywhere on your body. Stars typically are mysterious and represent beauty. If you want something a little bigger you can always opt for a shooting star or a nautical star design for something with a bit of an edge to it.Think SmallWhile the design is important it is not the only thing that can make a tattoo design for girls look sexy or cute. It also has to do with size and typically women tend to get smaller designs to make them look cute. However, you are not locked into that and a big design can also look very cute depending on the location and the chosen subject of the tattoo. Just keep in mind you are free to be creative and have fun with the design and choose a size that express something about you and something that looks great to you.Think LocationAnother important part of choose a sexy tattoo design is the location. Choosing an intimate or hidden location can often make the tattoo the perfect adornment. Something like the top of the foot, the wrist, ankle, back of the neck and hip are all areas that you might want to consider. Putting a tattoo in these areas accentuates the natural beauty and sexiness of the area.Think SexyMost importantly no matter what tattoo design you choose the ultimate goal is the design should be som[...]

Hot and Sexy Japanese Tattoo Designs For Females - The Best in Feminine Tattoo Designs

2012-03-05T00:44:20.293-08:00

Those who have a few tattoos probably know how hard and the time and effort it can take to find the perfect tattoo and the perfect design. It can almost be down right frustrating at times. It seems people are always wanting to find something that is different, unique, sexy and original. Well, right now is a great time to get a tattoo because the world of tattoo designs for women is growing at a super fast pace. In fact female tattoo designs are growing faster then any other segment of the industry. Thus has lead to a lot of new developments in tattoo designs for women. One of those is the use of traditional Japanese tattoo designs. The AdaptionWhen most people think of Japanese tattoos and their designs images of the hardened Yakuza gangsters with full body tattoos comes to mind. yes for centuries tattooing was done in Japan on Yakuza and criminals. That is where many of the traditional and very beautiful designs came from. However, these designs have gone through a rebirth of sorts or a renaissance as of late. The designs have been taken apart and broken down and then brighter colors from new inks have been added in to make smaller, cute and feminine tattoo designs. For example the Koi fish was a very traditional Japanese tattoo for males. Yet many women are getting koi fish for the beauty and strength but they are not doing them on the whole back for the most part. Instead they are using bright colors of the koi fish and then adding in beautiful full color waves and splashed into a quarter sleeve design. The point here is one can easily take part of a much larger and more traditional design and adapt it to fit in a smaller and sexier area.Popular ThemesThere are a lot of very popular themes among Japanese tattoo designs. The symbolism and meaning behind these tattoo is very deep and rich and often embedded into the Japanese culture and religion. For those of us getting a Japanese tattoo here in the west it can be smart to find out about the meaning and symbolism of the tattoo before getting it inked on your body permanently. Here are some of the hottest and sexiest designs for females right now.Koi FishTypically one would not think of a fish as beautiful. Unless of course you are a fisherman or love to eat fish. However, for the Japanese and many westerners the Koi fish represents the spirit of individuality and going against the norm or status quo. It is believed that koi fish typically swim back up stream to mate. Thus makes them very unusually int he fish world and an obvious sign of strength on their part. Therefore they can make for a wonderfully symbolic tattoo and design. Also with the new brightness in the inks available the water and gold of a koi fish really stand out.Cherry BlossomsCherry blossoms are another deeply historical and symbolic for the Japanese. They are also seen as a thing of great beauty. In fact many Japanese will go and visit a local park just to see the Cherry Blossoms. However, they also represent the impermanence of life and how life like a flower can be very beautiful but also fragile.Finding An ArtistAnother very important thing to consider if you are wanting to get a sexy and feminine Japanese tattoo is the artist that is going to ink the work on your skin. You want to find someone who will not only listen to your ideas but also provide feedback and input to help you refine your ideas. It is also beneficial to try and find someone with background in Japanese tattoo designs. Thus they can help you understand the symbolism behind certain parts of the tattoo and certain designs.Sexy LocationsOf course there are a ton of locations that are very sexy on a females body and also many areas that work well with a tattoo. Of course there is always the lower back design.[...]

Hot and Sexy Tattoo Designs For Girls - This is Why I'm Hot!

2012-03-05T00:44:20.293-08:00

(image) If you girls ever wanted guys tripping over with their jaws dropped every time you walked past, then you ought to get hot. And how? Well, why don't you try on some hot and sexy tattoo designs for girls?

More and more of the hottest women out there, are adding more sex appeal to their images by sporting a hot and sexy tattoo on their skin, on various parts of their bodies! One of the most noticeable things however, is that the definition of cool tattoos by these women is surely changing. You are more likely to find these sexy tattoo designs off a male tattoo studio than one for females. Why? Because more and more girls prefer bold tattoo designs than the usual cute and chic ones these days.

The Tattoo Design:

Hot tattoo designs would translate to exotic, dangerous, bold, and, you got it, erotic! Never, ever mix "cute" and "hot". A smiley or a butterfly would not make your man go gaga over your new tattoo design. The design needs to be strong to give out a feeling of sexiness and power. A dragon tattoo, perhaps toned down a bit, by accentuating its other features like face and eyes, could translate to sexy and dangerous, but being bold and different at the same time!

The Tattoo Size:

The tattoo size is quite a toughie. If you're one of those extra bold, macho women, then you wouldn't really mind covering your entire back with a sexy tattoo design, then there you have it! However, if your idea is to keep more skin, then you could perhaps go in for a medium sized tattoo, or a tattoo that's a tad bigger than the average "cute" design.

Sexiness is all about being bold and standing out. What better way to make a tattoo statement about your sexiness than flaunting a strong tattoo that you're not afraid to show off? Besides, if people need to notice it, it needs to be big!

There are many, many tattoo designers out there, but you need to be very careful while picking your design, deciding its size and picking the colors. Remember that a tattoo will be with you for the rest of your life, so you must make sure that you use the help of a professional tattoo designer to help you pick your tattoo than your randomly Google'd tattoo website. Someone who really knows their tattoos will be able to gauge what kind of a response a particular tattoo would even give you from people in general, and the effects of a particular design size, or what colors to pick for your skin tone.

Mermaid Tattoo Designs - Where to Get a Look at Great Mermaids

2012-03-05T00:44:20.293-08:00

(image) Do you have a love for water? Do you have a love for mystical beautiful women? Whatever your desire, mermaid tattoo designs are very popular. There is such a wide variety depending on your gender and where you want to place the tattoo. If you find some good designs to start with, you can use your imagination and come up with a unique tattoo design. In a bit I'll tell you where you can go to get good mermaid tattoo designs.

You can do a lot with mermaid tattoo designs. They can be a small, delicate ankle or foot tattoo. You can also do a larger arm or leg tattoo. Because of the tail, it makes a good design to wrap around a body part. If you want to make the tattoo larger, add some other water animals like dolphins or fish to the design. It's your tattoo, use your imagination and create something you will cherish.

When people ask about your tattoo, you want to have a good story to tell. If the tattoo doesn't mean anything personal to you, you'll get tired of it soon. Unlike many things in our lives, you can't get rid of a tattoo very easily. One out of 4 people have some type of tattoo regret. Don't let that happen to you. Take your time and don't get rushed into getting a design that you're not 200% sure of.

A good online tattoo gallery is where you should go to design unique mermaid tattoo designs. If you join a membership gallery you can have unlimited downloads for the price of two downloaded designs at some other online galleries. The best way to make your tattoo unique is to combine pieces of different tattoo designs that you like and put them together.

Let's say you want to combine dolphins and a mermaid. You can print off a few different dolphin designs that you like and a few different mermaid designs. Sit down with them and try different designs together to see which ones look best. You might find that you like a part of one mermaid and a part of another. That's fine, put together your puzzle and make your unique design. You can take it to a tattoo parlor and the artist will put the finishing touches on the design. You'll be leaving with a special unique tattoo that you designed.

It will go into some design ideas for Leo zodiac tattoos.Leo Tattoo Ideas: The LionLions are the animal most closely associated with the Leo sign and it of course is no mistake that lions are the king of the jungle. This fits perfect with a Leo's personality of living life large! Therefor a very natural tattoo idea is to incorporate a large lion. Their great main can be flowing in the wind making for a rather large and majestic tattoo design that almost any Leo would be proud to wear. Also being king of the jungle means you get to wear a crown something most Leos will love so you might want to include a crown on your lion tattoo design.Leo Zodiac Tattoo Ideas: FireAnother great theme that can be used alone to develop a tattoo or in conjunction with other parts of a design is flames and fire. Fire is the element that rules the Leo sign and therefore is closely connected with it. There are a lot of really great tattoo designs that incorporate fire and flames and they look incredible. There are lots of bright colors and strong bold lines making a flame tattoo incredibly attractive. There is always the flames from the wrist extended up the arms but you can also choose to use flames behind the lion. It is up to you but flames always make for a great tattoo design.Leo Zodiac Tattoo Ideas: The SunIt really can't get any better then this can it? The Leo's is ruled by the sun and this is yet another great image that can easily be made into all kinds of really great looking tattoos. You can do a tribal sun design, a sun with a lion or just a beautiful sun with a face and rays coming down across the body. There are so many different tattoo designs for the sun that this is a perfect tattoo for any Leo it is also strong and bold.Leo Tattoo Ideas: The Astrological SignAs another option for your tattoo design you can always easily include the astrological symbol for the Leo. It is a sort of snake looking U shaped figure that can be done by itself but also will look great if it is incorporated into any of the above designs. It would work well with a background of flames behind it or possibly below a sun or Lion. Whatever you choose you might want to consider adding in the actual zodiac symbol for extra flare.Leo Zodiac Tattoo Ideas: WrittenIf you are not sure about any of the above ideas and none of them really stand out for what you want to do then you might be thinking about getting a written tattoo. There are many different beautiful script styles and things a tattoo artist can do to supplement a written tattoo. Just getting the words Leo written in a beautiful script is a great idea. You can of course do this when combined with any of the other designs also.Who Should Get A Leo TattooOne of the best thing about astrological and zodiac tattoos is they are not gender specific and they look incredible on both men and women. Of course women might not want a big black tribal of a lion on their back but there are many lion tattoos that can be done with a beautifully flower mane that would work well for women also. Really any of the designs can be done in a variety of ways to suit both males and females that is th[...]

Butterfly Tattoo Designs - Get Lost In Mother Nature

2012-03-05T00:44:20.295-08:00

(image) Tattoo art form are increasing in popularity especially in the US and European countries. Trendy and decorative tattoo designs are a choice of every next person. Moreover, the choice is not less. Tattoos are available in several design and sizes, so you need not worry about how to decorate your body. Few of the most fashionable contemporary tattoos are butterfly tattoo designs, dragon tattoo designs, tribal tattoo designs, cross tattoo designs, henna tattoo designs, and religious tattoo designs, the list is long!

Butterflies have essentially been thought of as a style statement for years together. Be it garments, accessories, baggage, or jewellery, this lovely creature has managed to form a creative idea. The vibrant colors of the butterfly sported on you would make you look hot. Butterflies tattoo designs are very colorful and have a nice blend of eye-catching colors.

Tattoos with butterfly pictures will leave you in confusion for the selection. Some of the coolest butterfly tattoo designs are tribal butterfly tattoos, fairy butterfly tattoos, lower back butterfly tattoos, animal butterfly tattoos and Celtic butterfly tattoos. Tribal butterfly tattoos are generally influenced by ancestral art from local and native tribes. The tribal art comes from the large clans or tribes from Ireland and Scotland and even some of the tribes of Borneo. Butterflies since many ages have been linked with fairies. Butterfly wings are considered fairy wings and vice versa. A butterfly really represents a multi-colored picture of Mother Nature itself. Hence, these fairy butterfly tattoo designs are even more famed especially with females and modern males.

These butterfly tattoo designs have held a special place in a woman's heart. Amongst the preferred designs, the butterfly tattoo designs are one of the favorites. Butterfly tattoos come in wide-ranging designs and color formats, from two toned ones to multicolored. Normally, its are tattooed on the arm or on the shoulder blade no matter it is permanent or not. There are the energetic ones who have butterfly tattoos positioned on their neck or ankle if they can take the pain of the needles for lasting and permanent tattoos.

They are a subject of creative expression and the blending of colors is very unique and expressive. Butterfly tattoo designs are all about taking butterfly in the kingdom of fashion and combining it with art forms. The butterfly tattoos not only interest the lady world, but are amongst the chosen designs of the artists too. Permanent or temporary stick ones, even body painting; the tattoo designers love to play with colors that make the butterfly wings.

Some butterfly tattoos survive just a few days and can be cleaned off by any paint remover, some of them just need soap and water to vanish. Body painted butterfly tattoo designs are not very lasting and thus give a better chance of variety. Irrespective of the type a butterfly tattoo design, it is always amongst the finest designs as one can have fun with colors which are not likely with any other design.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Tension of Opposites

2012-03-05T00:44:20.296-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week's se(image) lection is The Tension of Opposites by Kristina McBride and is set to be released May 25, 2010 by EgmontUSA.

It’s been two years since Noelle disappeared. Two years since her bike was discovered, sprawled on a sidewalk. Two years of silence, of worry, of fear.

For those two long years, her best friend Tessa has waited, living her own life in a state of suspended animation. Because how can she allow herself to enjoy a normal high school life if Noelle can’t? How dare she have other friends, go to dances, date boys, without knowing what happened to the girl she thought she would share everything with?

And then one day, someone calls Noelle’s house. She’s alive.

A haunting psychological thriller taken straight from the headlines, The Tension of Opposites is a striking debut that explores the emotional aftermath of a kidnapping on the victim, and on the people she left behind.

From Goodreads

Oooo. A psychological thriller is always exciting. This book looks quite intriguing; the grief and guilt I think will play a big role in this storyline. If it can be pulled off without sounding whiny, this can be another realistic fiction triumph. In a way I can imagine this along the same lines as Jandy Nelson's The Sky is Everywhere, minus the death; the guilt, grit, and confusion is all there. Who knows, I

So what are you waiting on?

STAR OF THE MONTH: Mae West

2012-03-05T00:44:20.296-08:00

After showering our April tears for John G, let's move on to happier things and celebrate May's flower: Mae West!!!Mae West is in a category all her own. When she first came around, there was no on like her, and now that she's gone, it is clear that there never could or will be another. Mae was a calculating businesswoman and a born entertainer. Her greatest joy in life came from giving the better parts of herself to others . So devoted was she to this cause, that she never let up on her own facade, even in her private life. She knew that, just as you can't have your cake and eat it too, you can't keep your idols when you bring them down to earth. In a time of financial and social depression, Mae remained the dependable diva, delivering sharp one-liners, decking herself out in diamonds, and lusciously curling her lips whenever a devious thought entered her head. To men, she was a sexy, no-nonsense dame who could give as well as she got. In other words, she was a turn-on. To women, she was a soul-sister, spreading a message of empowerment and liberation, and kicking down the wall between accepted male and female gender roles. There were no cliches in Mae's world, just honest, true-to-life characters played to the exaggerated limit! With her films, she invited hope and proved to the world that no matter what, no matter who you are or who people think you are, you deserve the best, and you can have it; all you have to do is reach out and grab it!It's hard to see behind the caricatured remembrance that is Mae West. Today we seem to remember only a sex-crazed old lady who lived obliviously in her pink palace at the Ravenswood Apartments with boy-toys in tow. But this was not Mae. This was the illusion she created to loosen us up, relax our morals, and get us to enjoy life instead of waste it. Not that she didn't practice what she preached! But above her love of men or jewelry, Mae loved her work. One of the hardest working performers to set foot on the New York stage or the Hollywood sound stage, every effort she put forward was to create the best possible product for her fans. She was dedicated to doing something new and different and entirely her own, never settling for second best. For this, her audiences adored her and she them. She never refused an autograph; she never left a fan letter unanswered. She embraced all aspects of her career and her image, and for all of her 87 years did not disappoint. Now, when watching I'm No Angel (above, with Cary Grant) or My Little Chickadee, the stories seem cheesy and the comedy is a bit outdated, but Mae remains as fresh-- and I do mean fresh-- as the day she set foot before the camera. Her one-liners are legendary, her attitude is indefinable, and her personality is unmatched. Mae was all woman, but she let us see that she could play with the big boys. She doesn't slink around like some precious, demure leading lady-- she struts into frame and takes command! With her charismatic energy, she's not a spitfire or a firecracker, she's a whole damn volcano! At heart though, she was a kind friend, a giving soul, and a precious American treasure. Her passionate drive and her unstoppable smarts enabled her to go through life with a wink and a smile, justly achieving any goal she dared to dream. For all she gave, she has rightfully earned her place in the Hollywood heart. She was a class act on screen and in life. In Night After Night, Mae responds to a coat-check girl's remark, "Goodness, what beautiful diamonds!" by saying, "Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie." At her funeral in 1980, the presi[...]

Nostalgic Friday: The Body of Christopher Creed

2012-03-05T00:44:20.297-08:00

Welcome back to Nostalgic Friday! Since I love all things historical (culturally, physically, and personally) I do a post on Fridays honoring some awesome book that is a bit older. Many of them are books I enjoyed in my teens and others are books that I discovered as an adult that I think are relevant to YA readers. This week's selection is one of my favorites. I almost always recommend it to middle grade kids who like intrigue, mystery, and realistic fiction. The Body of Christopher Creed by Carol Plum-Ucci was released in 2000.The often-tortured class weirdo has disappeared, leaving an enigmatic note on the school library computer. Is he a runaway, a suicide, a murder victim? Sixteen-year-old Torey Adams and his friends remember beating up Chris Creed when his gentle but obnoxious ways exasperated them. Now that he is gone, they joke uneasily about him to ease their guilt. The town is full of ugly rumors, as Torey's lawyer mother tells them "See, guys, this is what happens when a kid suffers a personal tragedy. Nobody wants to take responsibility. Nobody wants to admit they had a part in it. So, they spend a lot of time pointing the finger, and things just get worse and worse." Suspicion of murder conveniently falls on big, tough Bo Richardson, an outcast "boon" from the boondocks edge of town. Torey's smug assumptions about people are rattled when he discovers that his childhood friend Ali is secretly romantically involved with Bo, who displays surprising tenderness and maturity in caring for her. The three try to solve the mystery of Chris's disappearance by attempting to steal his diary, but only succeed in implicating themselves, as the town is consumed with rumors and the revelation of adult secrets. Torey begins to find himself distanced from his other friends by his growing understanding of the importance of compassion toward those who are different.-From GoodreadsCan I just tell you how much this book influenced me? Of all the books I read as an adolescent and teen, this is in the Top 5. The characters were so memorable and it kind of reminded me of another favorite, To Kill a Mockingbird. The "bad guy" from the wrong side of the tracks and the mystery surrounding the truth. I found myself identifying with many of the characters, not just one. We all know what it's like to be bullied and picked on and we all can imagine what it's like to be madly in love with someone and not be able to tell anyone. This book seems especially relevant in light of recent headlines (examples here and here). I'm not one to usually drag the news into my blog, but this book really strikes home the effect that bullying can have on an individual. Kids can be very cruel and I found that The Body of Christopher Creed really focused on lessons that can be learned from such tragedies. The writing was also spot on and I really felt like the author understood the plight of teens. This is one of a few good novels from this time period when YA was still an up-and-coming genre. This is a great thriller/mystery that I think fans of Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher will appreciate.[...]

BITS OF COINCIDENCE: Part Two

2012-03-05T00:44:20.298-08:00

Time for more random encounters! Hope you find these entertaining ;)When Louise Brooks and her new husband, director Eddie Sutherland (above), finally made the move from New York to Los Angeles, they were looking for a bungalow to call their own. While out house-hunting, they found an apartment that seemed to be a good fit. However, they got a shock when they knocked on the landlady's door: it was Mary Miles Minter (below), the reclusive actress who had gone into hiding, and slightly mad, after the scandalous death of William Desmond Taylor! How the mighty had fallen... Though Mary seemed harmless, albeit a bit loopy, Louise and Eddie decided to look elsewhere, settling down in the luxurious Laurel Canyon near soon-to-be pals John Gilbert and King Vidor.~   ~   ~Clara Bow was a huge success when she began filming on The Plastic Age. The entire American population seemed to have fallen in love with her, as well as her co-star, Gilbert Roland, with whom she would have an on-again-off-again affair for years to come. Though Clara was the current talk of the town, there was a man destined to be an equally huge star lingering in the crowd of extras. Knowing Clara's eye for attractive men, it is quite possible she noticed the young and handsome Clark Gable, but the two never had any kind of relationship. The same could not be said of Gary Cooper, who later had a bit part as a reporter in It and the male lead opposite her in Children of Divorce. These two became lovers, and Clara didn't mince words when describing just how "huge" a  star Coop really was! ~   ~   ~ Wallace Reid (above with pal Adela Rogers St. Johns) was slowly making his name in the business when he made the film The Ways of Fate in 1913. People had begun to take notice of the handsome leading man, but it would be another two years-- after he took his shirt off in Birth of a Nation-- that his star really began to rise! However, with his good looks and charm, he seemed to be a shoe-in for success, unlike the quiet, character actor who was milling about the Fate set as an extra. It would take another six years before Lon Chaney (below) crawled to fame as the contorting, "crippled" con-man, Frog, in The Miracle Man. After this show of gut-wrenching acrobatics, the entire world would know his face, or rather faces. All 1000 of them!~     ~     ~When Vivien Leigh (right) was attending the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Roehampton, England, she was already certain of her future. She knew that she wanted to be an actress, and she had no qualms about telling pretty much every one within ear shot that she was going to be a star! Imagine her surprise when, as a struggling actress, it was one of her old classmates who made it to the big screen first: Maureen O'Sullivan (below with Johnny Weissmuller)! After seeing Maureen in Tarzan the Ape Man of 1932, Vivien was more determined than ever to make it! She used her friend's success to re-light the fire in her own belly. She worked hard and tread the boards of the stage before making an on-screen debut in 1935's Look Up and Laugh. She would have to wait another 4 years for the role of a lifetime in Gone with the Wind.~     ~     ~The Baby: Jean HarlowMost stage mothers push their children into the business to fulfill their own desires to be famous. Such was the case with Jean Harlow's mother: Jean Harlow! The younger Jean's given [...]

The Mark by Jen Nadol

2012-03-05T00:44:20.298-08:00

If you have the ability to know someone is going to die within 24 hours, do you have to help? When sixteen-year-old Cassie finally pieces together that the fuzzy, light glow around people is the mark of death, she doesn't really know what to do about it. She lives in fear of it because she feels powerless to stop it. Orphaned as a toddler, she has lived in rural Pennsylvania her whole life with Nan, her maternal grandmother. While Cassie's had a fairly normal childhood, her easy going time is cut short when one day she sees the mark on Nan. Nan has always believed Cassie about the mark and decides to accept her fate. After Nan's death, Cassie learns that in order to obtain the large sum that Nan has stored for her, she must go back to Bering, Kansas (where she was born and her parents died) and live with her estranged aunt for 90 days. This is obviously a total shock to Cassie. She's got her friend Tasha and the ever-present and gorgeous Jack to keep her company, why should she go somewhere she's never been, to live with a woman she's never met, just to satisfy some legal mumbo-jumbo? Either way, Cassie decides to look at it as an opportunity and goes ahead.Bering, Kansas is a college town and Cassie quickly finds things to occupy her time. She obtains a job at the local coffee nook Cuppa, takes a Philosophy 101 class as an audit student, and fills her extra hours with Lucas, the TA from her class. As the summer continues on, Cassie starts to see more and more marks. At Lucas's prodding she tries to warm some of them, with varying results. Confused, hurt, and very lost, Cassie stumbles upon a bit of truth that changes her whole outlook and her future. This was an interesting book. It reminded me of Numbers by Rachel Ward, only Cassie didn't have to see everyone's death date. Cassie just had to know that there was only one chance to let them know that they wouldn't survive the day. It posed an fascinating dilemma that I found myself debating, about the responsibility of this power. In general I found Cassie to be a mostly likable character, although she seemed a bit childish at times. I really found that she grew on me as her character developed and she stood on her own in Kansas. The guys in the novel were a little too pushy for my tastes and very obviously macho, but you never really get to know them. I kind of would have liked to see more of the personal side of Lucas and Cassie's relationship. We kind of just got to know them as almost anyone who ever saw them would have. It would have been preferable to see them in a more intimate manner (growing up stories, family stories, really describing a daily scene, etc). The story really didn't seem to be going much of anywhere, at least no where visible, until Cassie went to Kansas. I really think her time spent there was what made up my mind to like the book as a whole. She was so out of her element and on her own that it really made me appreciate what was going on more. It's not too fast and not too slow, really a short read. Take a chance on it![...]

Waiting on Wednesday: After the Kiss

2012-03-05T00:44:20.298-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

(image) After the Kiss is set to be released May 4, 2010 by Simon Pulse.

It's a different kind of book from her last one, Pure. This time it is a love story, with a twist. It's a novel in poems and it is about two different girls who are connected by the fact that one is the girl with whom the other's boyfriend hooks up! Drama!

This moment changes everything.

Becca has been head-over-heels for Alec from the instant they met. He's a brainy jock with a poet's heart—in other words, perfect for her.

Camille is careful with her words and protective of her heart, especially since Chicago. Then a new boy in her new town catches her off guard with a surprise kiss.

Too bad that new boy is Becca's boyfriend, Alec.

Camille and Becca have never met, but their lives will unravel and intertwine in surprising ways as they deal with what happens after the kiss.

From Goodreads

Very interesting. I'm looking forward to the poetry of this book. What are you waiting on?

Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey

2012-03-05T00:44:20.298-08:00

Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey is set to be released May 3rd by Harcourt Children's Books and the ARC was provided to me by Around the World Tours.Destiny is a right pain in the tuckus. Jill Jekel and Tristen Hyde are living proof of that fact. When her father is murdered, the mysterious and elusive Tristen shows up at his funeral to offer comfort and tell her that everything will be alright one day. That was at the beginning of spring semester. Now that it is fall of her senior year, Jill has focused her eyes on the prize of college. She's been handling the finances at home since her mother started slowly falling to pieces, but soon the truth emerges; Jill's father spent all her college savings and now she's on her own for tuition money. Fortunately there is a great opportunity awaiting her in chemistry class. There is a science contest with a huge grand prize that would allow her to go to college with very little worries. Now to come up with a project.Re-enter Tristen Hyde. The London-transplanted bad boy really does operate on his own schedule and within his own terms. Son of a brilliant psychiatrist, he's a little high strung, but reasonable enough; at least from the outside. Inside he is keeping the beast caged and at bay so that it doesn't fulfill it's wish to spill an innocent girl's blood. The blackouts when the beast takes control are less frequent, but the damage caused during that time is no less severe. The science contest provides a perfect cover for him to approach the late Dr. Jekel's daughter Jill to see if she can help him contain the beast.Jill and Tristen begin to work in secret, late at night at the school. They use the secret formula papers that her father kept locked away. It turns out that they really are the notes of the infamous Dr. Jekyll. As the ill-fated pair work together, things begin to change: between them, between their classmates, and especially between their parents. These teens are cooking up more than just a suppressive antidote to the beast, they're messing with nature. And on that last fateful night, nature fights back. This wild ride was so much fun!! I really loved the Jekyll/Jekel and Hyde play in this novel. It was so much easier to understand that dynamic since the story was told in the alternating voice of Jill and Tristen. They were both very entertaining and engaging. I found myself really drawn to Tristen and his pain, while still holding on to the thought that his pain and suffering were, in a way, self-inflicted. His torment really showed through in Fantaskey's writing. I think she really captured his essence. And Jill was phenomenal as well. While I don't usually like the uptight, good girls in books (especially if it's the good girl goes bad scenario) this was different. It really was like she was a child transforming as she had to mature. Sometimes that happens later in the teen years, especially when there's never been too much to overcome, and I found this to be the case with Jill. She was honest and fair, while trying to remain accessible to others. The characters' interactions, between themselves and others, allowed their personalities to really manifest and blossom. This was especially noticeable between Jill or Tristen and their parents.A fun and rather quick read, Jekel Loves Hyde is a nature next step for anyone who likes a little science and a little magic mixed in with their fiction. Enjoy![...]

Interview with Beth Fantaskey, author of Jekel Love Hyde

2012-03-05T00:44:20.298-08:00

I am so pleased to welcome the awesome and amazing Beth Fantaskey to Tattooed Books! Beth is the mastermind behind the terrific Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side (my review) and the soon to be released Jekel Loves Hyde (May 3rd, Harcourt Children's Books). She's worked all kinds of jobs, but her favorite by far is being a Young Adult author. A part-time professor at Susquehanna University, you can hopefully catch her on tour this spring! Without further adieu I give you, her interview. What do you consider your main genre? Urban fantasy, paranormal teen, etc.?Although I didn’t know much about genres – aside from the two broad categories of “mystery” and “romance” – when I wrote Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, I would say I’m now a paranormal, young adult, romance author. I don’t know if that will always be my genre, but I’m happy there now! What do you think about these new classics with a twist (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Jane Slayre, etc)? Do you think your novels, while not as direct a replication as these, are considered under this umbrella?I am honestly not sure... I haven’t read either of those yet. In fact, I hadn’t heard of Jane Slayre – although the title definitely made me laugh out loud when I just read it. I love it! If I had to take a guess, though, based on what I do know about Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I would say Jekel Loves Hyde is different in that it’s not so much a retelling or parody of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as it is a novel about two young people whose families were influenced by the original work. It’s a modern day interpretation, and there is the element of a personality changing formula in there, but aside from that the plots are very different. What made you choose the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for your novel? One day this phrase – Jekel Loves Hyde – sort of flashed through my brain, and I liked it so much that I hurried to see if anyone had ever used it as a title. When I realized there had never really been any kind of young adult adaption of the story, I started thinking that it would be interesting to show how a shy, young girl’s life might be changed by exposure to a dangerous, personality-altering formula. I especially loved the idea of setting the story in a high school because your teen years are all about discovering who you are. Given a choice, would a very introverted, moral girl choose to stay good – or succumb to the temptation to be wild and bad? What was your favorite part about writing Jekel Loves Hyde?I liked writing the parts in which quiet Jill Jekel unleashes her aggressive, vengeful alter ego. I’m a very shy, rule-following person, myself, and it was fun to imagine what it would be like to shed every inhibition and break every rule, just for the heck of it, without any regret or fear of repercussions. After Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side you took their story to the online world. Are you planning to do something similar with Jill and Tristen? No, I don’t think so... I think Jill and Tristen’s future will remain in the imaginations of readers. It’s definitely more of a “stand alone” book than Jessica’s Guide. You love to travel the world, any plan to go on tour with your books (both locally or internationally)?I am starting to get a pretty full travel schedule th[...]

(image) A "Tattoo" is a permanent or non permanent design which can be done on any part of the body. While non permanent tattoos are the simplest way to get a design on your skin, permanent tattoos are a painful experience with needles puncturing the design on your skin.

Non-permanent tattoos are designs that come on flimsy sheets of paper and the designs can be easily transferred on to the skin by applying water on the backside of the surface with design. This can also be washed off according to the convenience of the user. Other ways of acquiring a non permanent tattoo are henna designs or designs made with silver nitrate. Both these type of tattoos fade only after 10-15 days.

Permanent tattoos are of artistic nature and acquiring a permanent tattoo requires, patience, ability to with stand pain, choosing a good tattoo artist and ensuring hygienic practice of this art form. One can choose from a wide variety of tattoo designs that are categorized as: angel tattoos, Chinese tattoos, Celtic tattoos, Aztec tattoos, astrology tattoos, evil tattoos, fantasy tattoos the range is ever widening. The choice of your design reflects the style statement you wish to make with the design now being a permanent feature of your body.(image)

Tattoo designs can be ornamental in nature as reflected by modern youth to indicate interest in body art while tattoo designs can also be indicative of religious or community symbols. Excessive tattoo and body art designs were initially used by criminals to indicate their psyche and criminal behavior. Therefore, employment in various fields may not take too kindly to visible tattoos and body art on account of such notions.

Permanent tattoos also run the risk of infections and allergies that rise from the kind of needles used by tattoo artists. Modern methods in tattoo design have done away with such fears. The electric tattoo machine now commonly used by tattoo artists insert the ink into the skin with the help of a group of needles that are held together by a bar which is attached to an oscillating unit. The needles used are single use needles which ensure safe and sanitary practices. One should also ensure that the tattoo artist wears gloves and uses disposable wet towels as and when required.

Complex Rose Tattoo Design Ideas

2012-03-05T00:44:20.299-08:00

(image) A very popular tattoo image is a rose tattoo design. This can appear in many different styles and designs with some images looking like single roses and others looking like bunches of flowers. Sometimes the rose tattoo design appears as a border around other tattoo designs as ornamentation. Almost every tattoo shop in the world has this sort of flower design within their tattoo image catalog. Because of its popularity the rose tattoo design is very familiar to these tattoo shop artists. For many years the rose tattoo was one of the most popular designs for men and women tattoo shop customers alike.

Some tattoo artists become specialists at this sort of tattoo deign and have many customers that return for additional flower tattoos over the years. The flowers may all be the same type of flower or some people even get tattoos of various types of flowers on their bodies. As the vibrant colors start to fade over time as all tattoo images do, the customers will go back to the tattoo shop artists and have the tattoo image re-inked to bring back that vibrancy and sharpness of color to the images. This is becoming a very common thing for many people to have done to keep the vibrant colors in their tattoo images. It doesn't take nearly as long to recolor a tattoo as it does to have one done initially. Sometimes the whole process takes only an hour or so to accomplish.

If you want to have a rose tattoo design on your body you can search online for any web site that has these sorts of images, whether the images are drawings or photographs. Any photos can be brought to the tattoo shop and the artists can create a tattoo image from the photo and add any elements the customer wants to add in. The artists can also remove any elements that don't fit in the design or to make it a better tattoo image for the customer. The customer may also want to have the rose tattoo design as a border for another tattoo image which is always popular with customers.

It's no longer only women who have flower tattoos on their bodies. Many men have started having flower tattoos inked onto their bodies though the design may be part of a larger design which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with flowers. Maybe it's a tattoo image of a dragon with roses in its teeth or a scene of a castle with roses flowing down over the sides. The main thing to remember is that the rose tattoo need not be just for women or just for men either. There's no reason that both sexes can't have a rose tattoo design on their bodies.

The Bright Art of Sun Tattoo Design

2012-03-05T00:44:20.299-08:00

(image) A very popular design for many customers coming into a tattoo shop is a sun tattoo design. The design may be part of a much larger image that can also feature moon designs and star motifs along a celestial theme of images. Many people choose the sun tattoo design because the sun signifies life and power and that's what many people want their tattoo choices to convey to others. The design can be a small or large version of a sun image and the tattoo can be a symbolic and traditional image of the sun or it can be a more relaxed and artistic view of the sun with perhaps a smiley face across the design.

Almost every tattoo shop in the world has images of sun, stars and moon as offerings for their customers. These designs come in a wide range of styles, designs and sizes as well as colors. Some customers prefer the traditional sun tattoo design while others are quick to choose anything but the traditional sun design jut to be more unique. This is why many tattoo shop artists have a lot of choices for their customers in the tattoo shop catalog. When a customer comes in and wants a tattoo design like this, the tattoo shop artist can simply take out the catalog and show off the many designs already drawn up. If the customer wants a more unique design the tattoo shop artist can modify the design for the client very easily in many cases.

The customer can find an image of the sun design either in a magazine or online by using one of many search engines. The images the customer finds can then be taken to a tattoo shop artist and he can create a tattoo design from these images. The created design will be much more unique than if the design was simply chosen from a tattoo design catalog. This ability to have a unique design created is what keeps many tattoo shops in business as many people are looking to have more personal and unique designs created for their tattoo images.

For many people getting a tattoo for the first time, the sun tattoo design may be one of the first choices they make for a personal tattoo. It is simple and easy to have tattooed onto your body and there's generally only one color to the design which means that the tattooing will be over and done with fairly quickly. For the first tattoo design, this may mean a great deal especially if the person isn't very good at tolerating any amount of pain. Most people do very well their first time getting a tattoo because they're more aware of the fact that there will be some degree of pain involved.

Tattoos For Women - Top Foot Tattoo Designs

2012-03-05T00:44:20.300-08:00

Foot tattoo designs are a great option for someone looking to get a tattoo or add to their tattoo collection. They are often small, less expensive and they are very easy to cover up. So they make a great tattoo. However, deciding what to get for your foot tattoo design can be difficult. This article will help you identify some ways to locate wonderful foot tattoo designs and also potential areas to watch out for if you are considering getting a foot tattoo.Locating DesignsLocating the right design for you tattoo can often led people to a lot of frustration. It is common to hear people sigh with exasperation and throw their arms up in the air (well can't "hear" that one but you get the picture) and state they are giving up. They have the ideal tattoo design in their mind and they are looking everywhere for the last six months to try and find the design and they just don't see it anywhere. This is so common and I see people asking for help online out of pure frustration. So in order to put this type of pain and suffering or frustration to an end here is some advice. First of all don't look for the exact tattoo you have in your mind. You probably will never find it. It is not out there and that is a good thing. It means you have thought of something original and unique which will make your tattoo that much better. So instead use the following resources to help you locate research materials to aide the tattoo artist. Then express what you are looking for and turn over your samples to the tattoo artist and let them do their job!InternetThe internet has both paid for sites that have high quality designs then then free photo galleries of tattoos people have already gotten. These both work very well to find sources and ideas for your design. Do not search for free tattoo designs as you will only get back a lot of junk. Instead either pay for a membership site or look at the free gallery sites where people post their own pictures of tattoos they have.Tattoo ShopThis is the best place to go and a huge help. Make sure you find a shop where you can talk easily with the artists and find people that will listen to your ideas. If the artists in the shop are snotty or rude in anyway just thank them for their time and walk out.BookstoreAnother location to find tattoo designs that people don't often think about is the local bookstore. You can look through tattoo design books, art books in general, tattoo magazines or even general books that fit in with the theme you are wanting to get. For example if you want a Lord Of The Rings tattoo then you can look for art from that movie in a book and it doesn't necessarily have to be a tattoo oriented book. Just find photographs, artwork and pictures of things you like that are close to what you want.Potential DownsidesThere are some potential downsides to getting a foot tattoo. First of all the foot can be a pretty painful area to get tattoos done. They foot is always moving and often under a sock and shoe and there is a lot of friction and rubbing in the area. Thus the actual time spent getting the tattooing and the healing process can be more painful then with some other tattoo designs. This should not stop you from getting a foot tattoo but if it is your first tat[...]

My Trip Back to Middle School (or my 7th grade book talks)

2012-03-05T00:44:20.300-08:00

Last week, in celebration of National Library Week, the public library I work at was invited into a local middle school to talk. We presented information about general library policies, events and opportunities for teens, and of course BOOKS to over 300 7th graders!Pictured above are the 19 books I took with me. While this was a few too many, let me just tell you that there were some quite popular titles above that I think some of you may not be familiar with. Why I Fight by J. Adams Oaks is a very unique book. It follows 6 years in the life of prize bare-knuckle fighter Wyatt Reaves. Starting from the tender age of 12, after his Uncle Spade "rescues" him from living in a homeless shelter with his mother, the story tracks Wyatt's place in society. His uncle sees the potential to makes lots of money off Wyatt's natural talents and chooses to chase that track. After years of fighting though, Wyatt starts think that maybe he wants more from his life. Does he just deserve the seedy hand he's been dealt or does he deserve something more form life? It's a great book for reluctant readers and young guys. It's written like one would expect a teen to speak, so it makes the story very accessible to readers.Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson is perfect for those who love historical fiction. I find this storyline fascinating and a definite twist on the traditional characters. The year is 1776 and the story is about 13 year-old Isabel, a slave. She has watched as her entire life has been decided for her. Who owns her, where she sleeps, when she works, and so much more. Isabel has no real control or rights in her own life or that of her sister. So when they are sold to Loyalists, instead of being set free as they were promised, Isabel must make a very tough decision. She can spy on her owners for the American revolutionaries or she can keep quiet and live her life, as miserable as it may be. This book is a great retelling of what might have actually happened during the American Revolution. Isabel is just a servant girl, but she had the right to freedom just the same as everyone else.30 Days Has September by Chris Stevens is the best book in the world for students of any age and any subject. It has all sorts of nifty tricks and tips from how to remember the order of the great philosophers (go think of the SPA: Socrates, Plato, then Aristotle) to the rhyming song about the 6 wives of Henry the VIII (Kate, Anne, Jane, Anne, Cate, Kate who were divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, and survived). It also have math, grammar, commonly mispelled words, chemistry, and nifty factoids. It's a cute little book full of trivia facts and easy ways to help you keep on top of all the information there is to know. Many of the others are ones that I have reviewed already (Candor, The Hunger Games, The Sky is Everywhere) and some are of little interest to me, but were appropriate for the audience. I had a blast talking with these kids and it was really easy to engage them. I loved asking "So, which do you want to hear about giant cockroaches or zombies?" (Gregor the Overlander and The Forest of Hands and Teeth) and hearing some kids squea[...]

HOT SPOTS... On the Internet!!!

2012-03-05T00:44:20.301-08:00

As any movie lover knows, in this modern age of consumerism it is never enough to see a movie just once. When you fall in love with a film, just like any other romance, you are filled with an unquenchable need to possess the object of your desire. Unfortunately, we true movie-buffs find this difficult, because sometimes the most sought-after and adored films of all time are unavailable to the general public. Sure, there's the occasional re-release of a beloved classic and great venues like The Egyptian or The Silent Movie Theater that will unlock the vault of cinematic past for our present pleasure, and there is nothing like seeing a feature on the big screen. However, if you are as compulsive as I am, when you see something you like, you want it! Even though you know your bank account is low; even though you know buying new shoes would be a wiser choice of expenditure.I have sought in vain for many a film, particularly when I am deep in researching a certain individual. The number of titles that are either completely lost or being held hostage astound and frustrate me every time. So many great storylines and brilliant performances have either deteriorated, been burned for silver, or are sitting in a lonely vault somewhere. But, through my diligence i.e. obsession, I have been able to find quite a few sites that can offer the needle-in-a-haystack pieces that even the almighty Amazon.com cannot provide, (though praise be to Allah that such a site exists too)! Since I consider us comrades in arms, I want to aid you in your common quest. Here is a list of sites for the most loyal of you movie-hunting lovelies. I would say don't spend your money all in one place, but if you live in a glass house, you shouldn't throw stones! Haha ;)See it through the Grapevine:When I randomly stumbled onto Grapevine Video's website, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! So many films from the silent era, starring its biggest as well as its lesser remembered stars, are here for the plucking! Salivating at the mouth, I managed to put 4 movies in my cart before I remembered that I had rent to pay and should probably restrain myself. The great thing about this site, aside from the number of titles and the great quality of the films, is that the majority of the discs are double-features or include some sort of short film or comedy, so it's more bang for your buck. The site is also easy to navigate, because it allows you to search by title, director, genre, or performer, so if you have a favorite actor, he and his work will be easy to find. If Rudy's your man, look no further. If you're partial to Blanche Sweet (above, left), it doesn't get any sweeter! They accept credit or Paypal, so the money exchange is a cinch.  Vintage is always in fashion:Vintage Film Buff has quite the plethora of forgotten 1930s and 1940s productions. If you like B-movies, horror films, westerns, or noirs, you will find great flicks and hidden jewels at this website. Overlooked stars like George Raft, Miriam Hopkins and Anna May Wong (right) are finally given a chance to shine here, and there are fabulous and scandalous pre-cod[...]

Wine Spa Treatment

2012-03-05T00:44:20.301-08:00

"Come! I am tasting the stars!"   --Attributed by legend to Dom Pérignon (1638-1714)   Outdoor Wine Spa Treatment cabana overlooking ocean   I had my first wine spa massage today – it is the hottest new trend in the spa industry. Grapes, grape seeds and grape vines contain some of the nature’s most powerful antioxidants. The French have known the rejuvenation properties of grapes for centuries, and recent studies are showing that the French suffer less heart disease due to a regular intake which confirms that wine not only tastes good - it’s good for you on the inside, and now on the outside.   To start off the wine spa massage treatment you arrive 45 – 60 minutes before your appointment for your ‘guided relaxation sequence’: 10 minutes in the steam room or sauna relaxation; pressurized rain shower cooling-off and rinsing; 10 minute Jacuzzi immersion; cold plunge immersion for blood pressure stabilizing; 15 minutes in the relaxation lounge. The “La Vin” Massage is a personalized anti-stress massage using the unique therapy of Chardonnay oil containing antioxidant grape seed extract oil. The Merlot massage claims to treat sunburn and extreme dehydrated skin. After the wine spa massage I was escorted to the relaxation lounge where the Wine Spa Sommelier had designed the perfect pairing between “Haute Signature” canapés, and a perfect glass of wine from Valle de Guadalupe.    Wine Spa Therapy Relaxation Lounge / Wine Spa Therapy Facility Patricia Gray Inc is an award winning Interior Design firm  in Vancouver, Canada who blogs about WHAT'S HOT  in the world of Interior Design. 2010 © Patricia Gray | Interior Design Blog™ [...]

Waiting on Wednesday: Caleb + Kate

2012-03-05T00:44:20.301-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This week's selection is Caleb + Kate by Cindy Martinusen-Coloma and is set to be released May 4, 2010 by Thomas Nelson. Private school, rich friends, vacations in France--Kate has it all, except a belief in love. When Kate's family purchases a hotel in the Pacific Northwest, she enters a world that is wholly unknown to her. She never has any privacy because of the constant flow of guests. And as the hotel owner's daughter, she struggles to make friends. Then she meets Caleb, a strange combination of working-class, Hawaiian culture, and Christian bad boy. He talks about love in an all new way that she finds so alluring. But the two have nothing in common. He rarely smiles, rides a motorcycle with a rough crowd from town, and worst of all, he totally ignores Kate. But Kate has something that he needs and she resolves to prove to him that what she has doesn't define who she is.From GoodreadsI always say I don't like romances and yet so many of them draw me in! I think it's the way many of them are portrayed. The love story is kind of in the background building up while they deal with one another. It reminds me of the Simone Elkeles books I love so much like Perfect Chemistry and Leaving Paradise. Kate sounds like a pompous brat, but hopefully that will be tamed by the fiery and fiestiness of Caleb. Woot for more realistic fiction! So what are you waiting on?[...]

Welcome to the Hotel California

2012-03-05T00:44:20.301-08:00

Yesterday I set off to visit the legendary Hotel California in Todos Santos, Mexico.  The Eagles made this song famous in the 70’s|(listen to it here on YouTube as performed at the 2007 Grammys.)  According to the locals - Todos Santos was a town that the Vietnam draft dodgers escaped to in the late 60’s.  When communicating with home they would discreetly say they were staying at ‘The Hotel California’, hence the words of the song: “We are all just prisoners here Of our own device…… You can check out any time you like But you can never leave……” The drive to Todos Santos from my Hotel (on the Los Cabos Beach corridor) is approximately 1 hour, on the two lane Highway 19.  I bravely rented a car for the day and set off on my adventure only to get lost before I left Cabo San Lucas.  It turned to to be an interesting diversion, as I got to see the area of town where the locals live, which I might not have seen otherwise. Back on Highway 19, which is undergoing construction, the speed limit is posted at 60 km per hour or 80 km per hour.  I soon found out that was only a ‘suggested’ speed limit, as I had huge semi transport trucks right on my bumper and passing me on this narrow highway on a solid yellow line.  Once I sped up to the going speed of 110 – 120 kms per hour I fit in nicely. There were two stops that my Mexican Personal Assistant told me that I had to stop at:  Art & Beer for their famous drinks & decor,  and Miguel’s for authentic Mexican food.  Visiting the Hotel California was the anti-climax of the trip as it was very touristy, but the Pina Colada and appetizers at Art and Beer, and the Chili Reno at Miguel’s were unforgettable. The bartender at Art and Beer making his famous Clamato drink (above.)  It has 17 ingredients and could constitute a entire meal.  These are the ingredients, if you want to give it a try: Tomato juice, orange juice, worchester sauce, soya sauce, lime juice, hot sauce. wasabi, dijon, horseradish, oyster sauce, small scallops, clams, cracked shrimp, celery, celery salt, Vodka, ice.  Me with my Pina Colada - it was sooooo good / Appetizers of squid & scallops and clams on the half shell The Pina Colada was served in a pre-frozen half pineapple, with appetizers of fresh clams on the half shell, and a separate plate of baby squid and the smallest, tenderest scallops – both were topped with Mexican hot sauce.  In Mexico when you order a drink you automatically get something to eat with your drink.  This time I got a full meal with my Pina Colada.  The seafood was fresh caught locally that morning. Art & Beer on Highway 19 – Todos Santos in distance        The seating area at Art & Beer / Umbrellas from drinks along with business cards placed on the posts throughout Art & Beer        You can lounge in hammocks while enjoying a Margarita[...]

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

2012-03-05T00:44:20.301-08:00

(image) How perfect would it be to relive the last school day before Valentine's Day? You get to wear a cute outfit, hangout with your friends, be showered with flowers from admirers, go to a great party, and then die in a car crash. Wait; that last bit's not quite right. Sadly though this is what 16 year-old Samantha Kingston relives. Seven times! Each time she hears the squealing tires, sees the car roll over, and then wakes up in her bed to the same morning over and over.

After a time or two, Sam starts to realize what's happening. She also discovers that by changing the smallest thing, she can change events that happen in that day. Can she change the outcome of that night? Is she strong enough to do what's right instead of what's easy?

I must admit that I wasn't as big a fan of this book as I was hoping to be. The premise sounds fascinating and weird, but it just didn't pan out so easy for me. Sam was such a revolting character to me. She was so shallow and unlikeable that I just couldn't relate to her. She spent a good deal of her time talking about the pending loss of her virginity (do people really plan it out like this?) and ignoring anything of real importance or value in her life. She was quite flippant in her care of life and I just kind of found her insufferable. Her friends were no better, but as the story progressed I did notice a change in many of them. They were all very individual people who stood out in their own rights and I enjoyed watching them alter their behavior and personalities accordingly.

The writing was quite eloquent and well thought, with attention paid to every possible detail. I guess when you're repeating the same day again and again you really need to make sure you get your details down. I found that while the day was continually repeating, that I wasn't getting tired of it. I was looking to see if I could spot the differences myself between the days. It was amazing to watch the chain of events set off by altering one little thing each day. I'm still not quite sure what I think and feel about the ending, so I'll let you decide. Don't let the hefty page count scare you off, give it a shot!

Have You Heard of The Marvelous World Saga?

2012-03-05T00:44:20.302-08:00

I received a very interesting e-mail about a book series that I have some how missed. I don't expect to know every book that comes out, but this one seems right up my alley and I haven't ever seen it in a book store. Hmmm...

The book series is called The Marvelous World Saga and it's written by Troy CLE. The first book, The Marvelous Effect, was first published in 2007 and has even won awards! Just read this blurb:

Louis Proof is an ordinary kid.

He loves listening to hip-hop, racing radio-controlled cars, and hanging out with his best friend, Brandon. Then a mysterious letter invites him to visit the local junkyard. There he finds a secret, underground amusement park like no other in existence. This is the best day of Louis's life. The park even has the most amazing race course for radio-controlled cars. Louis starts racing right away. It's a close contest; he's about to activate his nitro boost to take the lead, when...

This is the worst day of Louis's life. Without warning or reason, thirteen-year-old Louis Proof falls into a coma due to a virus of a mysterious, celestial origin. When he awakens three months later, the world that he once knew and loved is totally out of control. He will learn that his illness is connected to everything that is wrong, and that it's not only his responsibility but his destiny to set things right.

This story is a megadramatic, remarkably true, super action fantasy. Get ready!

-Goodreads

How awesome does that sound? There's even a trailer for it!

That sounds fascinating to me! This is a different kind of fantasy novel and, I don't know about you, but now that this is on my radar, I'm hoping to read it ASAP.

Take your time and think about what you are going to do. Find several pictures of what you want on your back before you go in to the tattoo shop. It can cost up to ten times what you paid for a tattoo to have one removed later.[...]

Star Wars and the Holy Grail of Tattoo Designs - The Search is From Within, Luke

2012-03-05T00:44:20.302-08:00

Stars Wars Tattoo Art Tattoo DesignTattoos have always been about being different and sticking out from the crowd. This has lead just about every person seeking to get a tattoo to want to get something different than what others have gotten. Yet paradoxically this search for something unique and different also leads to creating hot trends in tattoo designs. You see for a while it was the tribal arm band tattoo, then it was the lower back tattoo for women. Before that it was the nautical star, the butterfly and on and on. One could go on forever tracing the "hot trends" in tattoo designs. However, when you research tattoo designs trends you begin to discover that they all started out of the desire to be unique and different. One or two people get a tattoo design that at the time is different and ground breaking. Then other people see the tattoo and they want to get one like it. Thus leads to more and more people getting a similar tattoo and leads to a developing trend in tattoo design. It is always fueled by the search for something different. For example the female that first got full sized angel wings tattoos has become famous in tattoo circles. She did this years ago and it was a very unique and original design at the time. However, it fueled a hot trend for angel wing tattoo designs. Now they are pretty common as a tattoo design for women these days. Thus is kind of like the search for the Holy Grail is it the never ending story or the never ending search for perfection. Everyone is searching for something that is different and unique and yet this leads to people getting what others are and it leads to hot trends in tattoo designs. So how do you differentiate yourself and your tattoo designs from every one else and how do you end up with something that is unique and cool at the same time. The Artist WithinWell, the way to come up with an award winning really cool tattoo design that is bold, daring and beautiful all at the same time is not easy. It is a creative process that takes a lot of work, thinking, research and time. Don't think that you are going to end up with a really cool and unique tattoo design by going to Yahoo Answers and asking others a question that asks others what you should get tattooed on your body. Unfortunately I see that all the time people that want a tattoo so badly just to have a tattoo and brag to their friends they have a tattoo that they forgo the whole creative process behind creating a design. Instead they just get a design because their friends say it is cool. Worst yet they end up getting a design because someone on line told them it was cool. If you don't believe me just check out any tattoo forum or Yahoo answers and look at all the questions people ask what kind of tattoo should I get here.Instead a much better way to go about getting a really cool design is to realize that it is a c[...]

How to Take Care of Your New TattooYou'd been thinking about getting a tattoo for a long time, and now that you've taken the plunge you're excited about what you're seeing. You know that the pain you went through getting the tattoo was nothing now that you see the results. Don't make the mistake, though, of thinking your job is complete. Without the proper care, your beautiful new tattoo can end up being your worst nightmare.A new tattoo is fragile. It is prone to infection, it could lose some of its beautiful color, or you might lose the design completely unless you take the proper precautions to take care of it. After finishing your design your tattoo artist took certain steps to protect it. And before you left, he gave you instructions for its care. If you're smart, you'll follow his instructions to the letter in order to avoid possible problems. You know you didn't go through all of that pain and expense just to allow your new tattoo to self-destruct. By following the techniques in this article you'll be sure you're doing your best to protect the investment you made in your tattoo.Step One - Leave the Bandage on OvernightRight before you left the tattoo parlor, your artist most likely bandaged your new tattoo. He did this for your protection. The tattoo was created by poking a needle into your flesh. It broke through your skin and drew blood with every poke. Therefore, at this point in time, your new tattoo is more of an open wound that a finished work of art. While some artists may tell you that you can remove the bandage after a minimum of two hours, most will advise leaving the bandage on overnight. That way you continue to keep your wound free from dirt, lint, and air-borne bacteria.Step Two - Removing the BandageIn the morning, it'll be time to remove the bandage. Prior to getting the tattoo you should have purchased a liquid-based antimicrobial or antibacterial soap that is also very mild. After removing the bandage you will want to gently wash the tattoo and the area around it with the soap and lukewarm water. Take care to wash away any remaining dried blood or ointment applied by the artist. The best way to wash the tattoo at this point is with your hand alone. If you use a washcloth, it might damage the tattoo. After carefully washing the entire area, dry it completely using firm pats and a paper towel or a clean bath towel.Step Three - Taking Care of the TattooAfter your still-vulnerable wound has been cleaned and dried, you need to cover it with a protective antibacterial medication. Either Bacitracin or A&D Ointment will do the trick, and both can be found at your local drugstore.Instead of recommending antibacterial ointments, your tattoo artist will probably sugg[...]

Hola from Los Cabos

2012-03-05T00:44:20.304-08:00

Warning: Depending where you are when you are reading this, you might feel a tinge of envy, but let me preface this post by saying that this vacation is just what I am needing to recharge and ‘smooth my feathers’... I am sitting on a beautiful sunny beach in Los Cabos, Baja Mexico sipping a Margarita and eating a pizza with Mexican hot sauce ....two weeks of bliss….with lots of  time to waste away in Margaritaville.  The resort I am staying at is situated on a magnificent private coral beach with 6 swimming pool, 3 restaurants, and a world famous Wine Therapy Spa with treatments called vinotherapy (more on that in another post.) I arrived late Sunday, and on Monday I did not leave the pool deck. I was totally mesmerized by the warm ocean breeze, the sound of the surf, and the reflections in the infinity pool. Mexican Pizza with Hot Sauce & a Lime Margarita The bird in the background was trying to get a bite of my pizza.   Wildlife at the pool. This iguana has a good thing going. He slinks under the deck chairs and waits in prey for any unattended food that he can pilfer. The first time I noticed him (or may it is a ‘her’) he had a slice of tomato in his mouth, bigger than the size of his head, and was scurrying across the pool deck back to the safety of his rock to devour it. It quite shocked me the first time I saw him, but over the course of a few days the more I saw him the more familiar he became.   The resort is at the bottom of a high outcropping of rock. Walking back to my room these are some of the view corridors to the ocean. My favourite time of day is in the late afternoon, when the sun is lower in the sky and casts dramatic shadows.          Shadows on the trunk of a palm tree One of the restaurants is situated on the edge of the ocean and is lit entirely by candle light where Chef Gerardo Rivera reigns supreme. The service staff bring flashlights to look at the menu. For my main course I had the most delectable local Sea Bass firewood cooked with tomato chunks, lemon grass and cilantro accompanied by a glass of Chateau Camou, El Gran Divino”, (Late Harvest). For dessert I waited patiently for the 20 minute cooking time for the Chocolate Bomba scented with Cardamom and Bitter Chocolate, which was baked in a wood oven. In Spanish -  Bomba de chocolat amargo y cardomomo. Chocolate Bomba baked in a wood oven. Best Japanese Symbol Tattoo

2012-03-05T00:44:20.304-08:00

(image) Japanese Symbol Tattoo
Japanese Kanji Tattoos are fast becoming the most popular tattoo design. Japanese Kanji characters are so incredibly artistic and have such mystique that it seems as though they were created ideally for the purpose of tattoos. When you think about the best qualities of a tattoo many words come to mind such as symbolic, mysterious, and meaning.
(image)
The beauty of Japanese Kanji tattoos is that each Kanji symbol is an ideographic character, which means is represents an entire object/meaning/symbol. Japanese Kanji symbols have such elaborate definition; each stroke of the symbol must be done in the correct direction and order. Japanese Kanji Tattoos can easily represent nearly any meaning you want. Words such as love, peace, freedom, strength, unity are very popular Japanese Kanji tattoos, as well as loved one's names.
(image)
It is a good idea to research your Japanese Kanji Tattoo before visiting your tattoo artist. There are several reasons for this - firstly, Kanji is a different form of language to English, and if you were to choose a Kanji sentence, the order of the words will be in different order to English. Secondly, many tattoo parlors have Japanese Kanji tattoo designs which have been altered by westerners and you will not know until it is too late. Finally, some Japanese Kanji characters have several meanings, and you may think your symbol means one thing, where in fact it means something completely different. Luckily there are websites out there that can help you get the perfect translation.

Many people get tattoos for many different reasons; some for authority and others for respect, but what happens when the tattoo you get is not the right one, or what if you get it but a few moments later you realise that you don't really like it? A lot of people are flocking to the tattoo parlors these days to get inked. Why do people get inked in the first place? Some say it is for recognition, other for attention, & yet some people need to follow the crowd. No matter what your reason is for getting inked, be sure you actually browse through a reputable gallery of designs before you select on what you need. You cannot erase a design you don't like so think carefully. If you need to check out tons of butterfly tattoos,
Humans have had their bodies inked for thousands of years so this is not something new at all. Designs have been used as a way of expressing personal religious belief, signification of a tribe or group, cultural status, punishment, or out of love. There's been mummies found from 5,200 years ago that have tattoos on them.

The earliest known examples that plenty of people site for tattoos were on plenty of female mummies which date back to about 2000 BC. As stated though, there was a recent discovery along the Austrian border which found a mummy that dates back about 5,200 years & this mummy also has patterns designed on it. So these "inks" go way back!

On top of this, in 1948, a 2,400 year elderly body was found in the frozen ice of Siberia. This ancient male was covered in tattoos on his limbs & torso, representing ancient mythical animals & beliefs. So as you see, tattoos, whether they be butterfly tattoos or otherwise, are a sizable role in society - both past & present.

Body adornment was the main form & reason for tattoos in the ancient world. Today, symbols like butterfly tattoos are merely a form of joy or are done because the person wants that look. In ancient times, women used to have a sure arrangement of dots across their stomach, to symbolize some sort of stature in society.

HISTORY LESSON: Elinor Glyn gives "It" away

2012-03-05T00:44:20.305-08:00

Hollywood owes a great debt to the many superb, female writers who contributed to the growth of cinema. Frances Marion and Anita Loos both had strong careers from the silent area through the golden age, and they penned some of the most popular and classic films of all time. Of course, authoresses like Ayn Rand and the always-in-fashion Jane Austin had their books adapted for the screen, providing compelling and intricate character pieces for many an ambitious actor. But there is one very interesting lady who took Hollywood, and thus all the world, by storm with her provocative and sexually explicit literature.Elinor Glyn was a well-bred but rebellious English girl who grew into an envelope-pushing misfit and cultural icon. As an author, Elinor was the Jackie Collins of her day, penning erotic novels that unapologetically explored female desire. In Three Weeks, for example, she describes a sexual tryst between a very entangled couple on a tiger-skin rug. It caused quite the uproar and became the topic of many a fiery church sermon, but Glyn knew what she was doing. After releasing some sentimental romance novels that fell flat with the public, she spiced things up with a more scandalous brand of literature and coincidentally made a lot more money. She stuck to the new formula and never looked back. Women devoured her books like chocolate-- living out their sordid and impassioned fantasies-- largely due to the fact that the heroines in Glyn's novels were never shrinking violets, but the predators of assorted male prey. This early example of female empowerment came at just the right time, as the twenties really started to roar... and the women too! As a result, the public came to depend on Elinor as a source for all things romantic, sensual, and cultured. Her built-up, exaggerated persona developed into an almost cartoonish fiction, like the Cher of the literary world, yet people identified her as a person of great class and worldliness. She took the bate, shamelessly self-promoting herself and becoming famous for her lavish wardrobe, fake eyelashes, and flame-red hair (ahem, wig). After willfully crafting herself into a social celebrity and a literary gold mine, it wasn't long before Hollywood came calling to get in on the deal.Hollywood's poaching of this author made sense. If Glyn's saucy novels transferred to film, they were sure to reel in the big bucks. Elinor saw the possibilities as well, reali[...]

Taken by Storm by Angela Morrison

2012-03-05T00:44:20.306-08:00

Isadore took everything from Michael. She was vicious, brutal, and unrelenting. In her wake she left Michael friendless and orphaned. That is how he came to live with his paternal grandmother in the small rainy town in the Northwestern US rather than in sunny Arizona or balmy Florida. After the hurricane killed everyone on the scuba-diving boat trip, Michael didn't have anything left. He kept his dive log and used it as a type of therapeutic journal when Isadore became too much for him to bear.Until he meets quiet, enigmatic, Mormon Leesie (dubbed The Ice Queen by fellow classmates), Michael thought he might need to give in to what Isadore told him. He finds himself drawn to Leesie's presence despite her very strike moral and religious guidelines. At first it appears that they won't work out due to his volatile nature as a result of his grief. He's trying to overcome something that seems insurmountable and Leesie wants to help him, both spiritually and emotionally. They spend all their free time together, despite what they are hiding form one another. In the end, their secrets may be too great for them to bare alone. Can they manage to rescue each other before one of them is gone?Taken by Storm is not only told in alternating voice, but by multiple means. When it's Michael's turn, we're reading his entries in his dive log. They tell so much and yet not always enough. He's very clipped and refers to himself as "i" rather than "I" insinuating that he is less important that others. When Leesie is narrating, she speaks in either a chat log with Michael or her poetry critique partner or uses her actual poetry to convey action. Her work is very literal with less symbolism than one encounters during English class, but there is still rhythm and measure to it. It was very pleasing. The religious aspect of this book added a whole other dimension that I enjoy authors exploring openly. Leesie is like a lot of girls, both religious and not, who are abstaining from physical intimacy (of most kinds) and is trying to do the morally appropriate things in all situations. Naturally, Michael plays the sinner attempting to be saved by this girl, but really it's deeper than that. She's not necessarily concerned with saving his immortal soul and converting him, but really she just wants to open his mind to other ways of thinking. A very unique experience I must say.Overall though, th[...]

Waiting on Wednesday: Jekel Loves Hyde

2012-03-05T00:44:20.306-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This week's selection is Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey and is set to be released May 3, 2010 by Harcourt Children's Books.Jill Jekel has always obeyed her parents’ rules – especially the one about never opening the mysterious, old box in her father’s office. But when her dad is murdered, and her college savings disappear, she's tempted to peek inside, as the contents might be key to a lucrative chemistry scholarship. To better her odds, Jill enlists the help of gorgeous, brooding Tristen Hyde, who has his own dark secrets locked away. As the team of Jekel and Hyde, they recreate experiments based on the classic novel, hoping not only to win a prize, but to save Tristen’s sanity. Maybe his life. But Jill’s accidental taste of a formula unleashes her darkest nature and compels her to risk everything – even Tristen’s love – just for the thrill of being… bad. From GoodreadsSo, how could this not be awesome?! With all the "remixes" of classic literature flying around, I think this one will be better suited to what I like. Don't get me wrong, I loved Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I want to read Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter, but this one is different. It's not telling the story again and adding in paranormal elements, it is simply taking the basic idea and applying it to today's world. While I was not thrilled with Fantaskey's last book, Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, I think this one is more suited to my tastes. It has mystery, intrigue, a little romance, and danger. Let's hit it!So what are you waiting on?[...]

Best Temporary Tattoo Ink

2012-03-05T00:44:20.306-08:00

As the popularity of airbrush tattoos and body art increases around the world, more and more companies are developing their own airbrush tattoo ink. Being an airbrush tattoo artist for over 6 years now, I have had the opportunity to try out many different brands of temporary tattoo ink. Outlined here are my findings from my own independent experiments. When shopping for temporary tattoo ink, the first thing you should look for are companies that use only FDA approved ingredients. As of this writing, the FDA does not regulate temporary tattoo inks, so be wary of any company that says their inks are actually FDA approved. The next point to watch out for is companies advertising concentrated ink. You do not want to change the chemistry of the inks you are spraying by reducing them yourself. Buy inks that are ready to spray. Sometimes you will still have to slightly reduce these airbrush ready inks in order to spray properly, but these minor adjustments will be far more consistent than having to reduce the inks from a concentrated form.Temporary Tattoo InkOkay, now let's get into looking at some actual inks. The first brand of ink I tried was Nazille sold by TATstore. Nazille is a very thick alcohol based ink. The ink requires 25-30 PSI to spray well. It stays in solution well, but still needs to be shaken occasionally. The durability of the airbrush tattoos sprayed with Nazille is very good. I used this ink at a resort pool where I set up frequently, and it was not uncommon for tattoos to last a week or more even with the kids swimming extensively in chlorinated pools. The next ink I tried out was OCC temporary tattoo ink. This ink is very thin, and settles quickly. There is a good variety of colors. The ink sprays very easily, but tended to clog the airbrush up a bit when I did not shake it enough. The colors were vibrant. However I found this ink to not be very durable for airbrush tattoos on the general public. I think it is much better suited for professional applications such as photo shoots where the longevity of the artwork is of little concern. But tattoos did last an average of 3-5 days.Another ink trial was done using ABA temporary tattoo ink. This ink is the cheapest name brand airbrush tattoo ink on the market that I know of. While not as thick as the Nazille ink, it is thicker than the OCC, and spray[...]

2012-03-05T00:44:20.306-08:00

Thus go on playing, meliorate you know the trick, meliorate you’ll become out as the winner of situations. This card tattoo is an excellent visual representation of that great saying. Here is something rattling bizarre and scary. Hooded skulls however adorn his arms, connected with a few graveyard crosses. No wonder, every this makes him popular enough! Real zombies beware! As for whatever art, the substance is what matters most with tattoos. Tattoos are every about dedications; and that is here. As the tattoos are prefabricated for whatever perseverance and the pain gives pleasure; there has to be whatever purpose. This is a very unequalled tattoo with the text expressing the feelings of the heart. With the water droplets in the body; this is rattling a chilled tattoo that module attain you feel hot. I rattling appreciate this simple idea of keeping ‘a example of heart’ in such a sexy position. The colouration of the body makes it countenance more spicy and attractive. You rattling have to wager it deep. With the bikini on;[...]

Restoring Harmony by Joëlle Anthony

2012-03-05T00:44:20.307-08:00

Restoring Harmony by Joëlle Anthony is set to be released May 13, 2010 by Putnam Juvenile and was provided by Around the World Tours.Love can drive people to do many things. It drove Molly McClure from her tiny island home in Canada all the way to Gresham, Oregon in search of her grandparents. This included crossing the Canadian/US border underage and illegally, having to sell whiskey on the black market to raise the funds to come home, and fighting the Organization for survival. But let's start at the beginning. After the Collapse, when the oil dried up and became strictly government property, and with most major cities now in tatters, Molly and her family get along as well as can be expected on an island in Canada. They farm and raise livestock that they both eat and sell for profit. The main way of communicating with the mainland is through electronic correspondence like CyberSpeak and e-mail. Snail mail still runs, but it's slower than ever. It's through this last form that the McClure family learns that Molly's grandmother has had a stroke and is in the hospital. When they finally got through to the hospital to find out if she's okay, the connection is lost and unable to be found again. Molly's heavily pregnant mother goes into to shock at the non-information surrounding her own mother's life and falls into bed-rest.It is decided that Molly must cross the border illegally and retrieve, at the very least, her doctor of a grandfather and her grandmother, should she still be living. Along the way she meets a couple of very kind people who help her in their own special way to keep her out of trouble in, what is to her, a foreign country. Molly finally arrives at her destination, barefoot, penniless, and exhausted. While she is thrilled to discover that her grandmother lives, if a little off due to her condition, she is soon dismayed to find her grandparents wasting away with no money and very little food. But that's not all, her grandfather staunchly refuses to go back to Canada with Molly as it's too dangerous for them to travel with the grandmother and there is no money.Molly has to decide whether she's going to let them stay in her grandparents' home and possible die of starvation or if she's going to make something happen. With the help of a somet[...]

Best Design Of Evil Tattoos

2012-03-05T00:44:20.307-08:00

Evil TattoosWhen people talk of evil tattoo designs they are usually referring to either horror tattoos, as the one shown in the picture, or tattoos that use pagan symbols. This latter category of tattoos mainly deals with the fact that what may be called as "occult". These images are in association with the white witchcraft which has another name called Wicca, the Viking Runes, The Tarot and other magic craft and prophesy. Images like the pentacle which is a five pointed star, or the Athame which is a double edged blade that is used for white witchcraft. There are also images in relation with the four elements which are the fire, water, earth and air. All of the above mentioned images fall under the Wicca tattoos. Many people tend to think that these occult gothic tattoos are evil tattoos. For all those who think like this let me make you clear that what you think is absolutely wrong. These images neither have evil qualities nor do they have anything to do with so called ‘Satanism’. These images are just the signs of prehistoric religions in the medieval period, which gothic tattoo lovers dig out and celebrate by getting these designs etched on their bodies in ink. And the horror designs are not evil tattoos either, nor they do they represent a serious sociopathic personality. It’s just a design that’s cool and shows one’s love for the horror genre.Evil TattoosWhen the topic of evil tattoos are mentioned in public circles, it’s usually in reference to classic horror designs depicting demons and ghouls or tattoos that are of an occult nature. The former characterization is what the grim reaper design in the photo alludes to. It’s a cool design but is far from being an evil tattoo. The grim reaper is a potent symbol of death and a graphic reminder of the transitory nature of life. The grim Reaper and the skull were often used as symbols in medieval and renaissance art as a stark reminder of the fact that life is finite and hints powerfully at the afterlife that awaits us. The grim reaper is often associated as an agent of Satan or the devil, but this is not necessarily the case. The grim reaper is death. Whether the soul goes to heaven or hell or ends up in purgatory depends on the kind of life lived by the recent[...]

Best Tattoos Sexy - Sexy Tattoo Placement

2012-03-05T00:44:20.308-08:00

By Mat FayYou have decided that you want a tattoo, and are ready to pick out a design. Before you do this though, you need to figure out where you are putting your tattoo, as it will affect the size and context of your design. Most women like to place their tattoos somewhere sexy so they can attract attention from the opposite sex. And why not, that’s pretty much what tattoos are for right? Here are some of the sexiest places to put a tattoo:1.Lower back: with low-rise jeans still in style, this is the perfect place for a tattoo. Most designs in this area use somewhat of a triangular shape with the point facing down, so the eye is drawn to your lower half. This is also a great surface to put a large, sprawling tattoo, and is easy to cover up if you are going to work.2.Upper breast: since most guys are looking there anyways, why not give them something to look at? Tattoos in this area are generally smaller, with symbols such as flowers, bees, dragonflies and butterflies being very popular.3.Ankle: if you have great legs then an ankle tattoo is perfect, it will draw the eye to that narrow part of you and then go on from there. Again you will probably want to stick to a smaller tattoo in this area.4.Wrist: slender, soft, and usually lightly scented, the wrist is an overlooked sexy place on our bodies. Place a small tattoo on the inside of your wrist and notice the attention you get!5.Shoulder: show off your inner Playboy Bunny with a sexy tattoo on the back of your shoulder, and then go buy some strappy tank tops. You have a great surface where you can place a nice-sized tattoo and get noticed.6.Back of Neck: As long as you stick with something small, this is a great location for an Asian symbol or something unique. Of course the neck is supremely sexy, and having a cute or interesting tattoo there is a great conversation starter. There are other, more risqué place where you can put a tattoo, it just depends on who you want to see it. Here are a few suggestions:1.Above pubic area: perfect for a small, sexy tattoo that your special someone can see.2.Hip: low rise jeans or a bathing suit can let you show off your little fr[...]

Nostalgic Friday: The Outsiders

2012-03-05T00:44:20.308-08:00

Welcome back to Nostalgic Friday! Since I love all things historical (culturally, physically, and personally) I do a post on Fridays honoring some awesome book that is a bit older. Many of them are books I enjoyed in my teens and others are books that I discovered as an adult that I think are relevant to YA readers. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton was originally released in 1967. I picked this up on a whim after catching the 1983 film of the same title, staring very young versions of Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Diane Lane, and many others, on tv.The Outsiders follows the struggle and strife of life on the outskirts of 1960's Oklahoma society. Ponyboy Curtis is a Greaser (lower middle class kids known for their long, greasy hair) along with his brothers Darry & Sodapop. Darry became their guardian when they were orphaned by a tragic car accident. Ponyboy's best friend Johnny is a shy, quiet greaser with a terrible home life. They all mostly do what they want, while trying to avoid confrontations with the Socs (Socials, the upper mid-class kids from the right side of the tracks). One night after seeing a movie together, Johnny & Ponyboy are seen walking with two Soc girls who also saw the same movie. The girls' boyfriends don't take too kindly to the Greasers messing with their girls. While there isn't a fight immediately, later that evening when the boys are blowing off steam after fights at their respective homes, their are caught by some Socs in a local park. The boys start getting the snot kicked out of them and soon Ponyboy blacks out after nearly being drowned in the fountain. He comes to next to a shell-shocked Johnny and a dead Soc.They flee the city because they know there's no way they'll get a fair shake in court. While hiding out in an abandoned church, they gather information from town from a fellow Greaser Dally. Eventually, when word comes that the Greasers and Socs are going to go toe to toe in a rumble, the guys decide it's time to return and face up to their actions, after the rumble. When they're getting ready to grab their stuff and head out, someone completely unexpe[...]

Content and Age Appropriateness

2012-03-05T00:44:20.308-08:00

It seems that everyone is ranting these days, but really I just want to ask a question. How young is too young to read some books? I know that YA is a very broad genre encompassing books that are appropriate for almost any age and maturity level, but where is the line drawn? As someone who works mostly in YA in the public libraries, I get asked a lot if something is "appropriate" for their children. If I know the book, I'll ask them what they're concerned about and then tell them how this book reflects their concerns or I'll just give them the basic rundown of any "questionable" content. This can be tricky because I don't want to discourage reading and I don't want to lose the trust of either the child or the parent, but I feel that there are somethings that some readers just aren't prepared for yet. Although, as a teen myself, I always found a way around my parents to read what I wanted and I'm sure these kids are doing the same thing.I really do hate being put in these positions most of the time because I feel it's awkward for everyone involved. Then again, sometimes I think it is warranted and needed. I mean, I had a woman bring in her 8-year-old daughter to get some books and the child wanted: Twilight, The Clique, and The Last Song. She wasn't really worried about the content of the first two (!!) but when I mentioned that the last one is actually an adult book, she looked surprised and asked, "Well do you think it's inappropriate?" I was shocked for about 2 secs as to why the child even wanted the book and how I should respond, until she reminded me "We're going to see the movie with Miley Cyrus this weekend." I told the mother a basic run down and explained that the book really is intended for older teen and adult audiences. What's happened to kids wanting to read what's made for them? I mean, just because Miley Cyrus stars in the movie version of a book, does NOT mean that your Miley fan should read it!! Give her Hannah Montana books, those are on her level. Luckily this mother at least asked and then took my advice by not getting t[...]

CAST-AWAYS: Part Two

2012-03-05T00:44:20.309-08:00

Time for more battles of the casting couch! Next up, of course, is April's Actor: John Gilbert. GILBERT VS. GABLEThere was an unconscious and lengthy war waging between these two silver screen giants. As one's career was burning out, the other's was just starting to catch fire! As a result of the great depression and changing social attitudes towards the male image, John Gilbert slowly found himself being usurped time and again of various roles and always seemingly by the new MGM macho, Clark Gable. At first, the studio didn't know what to do with the hulking, big-eared actor. But they knew that he was a star, for when they put him in front of the camera, audiences reacted with relish! Gable more accurately symbolized the prototypical modern man to 1930s audiences. He was gruff, a bit dangerous, and "liberal" with his morals. As a result, when it came time to cast the scandalous films that were being slipped past the censors, Gable seemed to fit the bill more than the eloquent Gilbert, who was more recognized for romantic leads in period pieces. John was all man, no doubt about it, but his image was identified with a more distant past. He knew how to handle a sword and could win the day with heroic daring-do, but his success was the result of skill and wit, whereas Gable simply used brute force... and guns. When it came to the opposite sex, John would woo and win over a woman with his sensitivity and boyishness; Gable would simply manhandle. Thus, in 1931, when Gilbert was up for the role of the sinister and magnetic male lead opposite Norma Shearer in A Free Soul, he found himself unceremoniously intercepted by Gable (above, right). Audiences wouldn't have responded with as much ravenous lust had it been John who had thrust Norma down onto the couch. That is not how the "Great Lover" would treat a lady! The same followed when Clark was cast in both Susan Lenox: Her Fall and Rise and Red Dust (above), both of which were originally slated to be Gilbert vehicles. What would it have been li[...]

Waiting on Wednesday: Anxious Hearts

2012-03-05T00:44:20.309-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This week's selection is Anxious Hearts by Tucker Shaw and is set to be released May 1, 2010 by Amulet Books.“Evangeline,” he repeated, calling at a whisper. “Evangeline.” He was not calling that she may hear, he was calling that somehow her soul might know that he was devoted entirely to her, only to her. “Evangeline, I will find you.”Eva and Gabe explore the golden forest of their seaside Maine town, unknowingly tracing the footsteps of two teens, Evangeline and Gabriel, who once lived in the idyllic wooded village of Acadia more than one hundred years ago. On the day that Evangeline and Gabriel were be wed, their village was attacked and the two were separated. And now in the present, Gabe has mysteriously disappeared from Eva.A dreamlike, loose retelling of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s famous love poem “Evangeline,” Anxious Hearts tells an epic tale of unrequited love and the hope that true love can be reunited. From GoodreadsI am a sucker for good poetry and "Evangeline" is one of those good ones. It is a beautiful epic poem from the mid-19th century. This story has great potential just because it comes from a great source. Granted, even in the synopsis, it's called a "loose retelling" I still think there is hope. I really enjoyed the film Tristan + Isolde and it was a "loose retelling" of one version of their story. The premise of this book looks promising and I hope I can get my hands on a copy. So, what are you waiting on?[...]

Best Tattoo Suppliers

2012-03-05T00:44:20.309-08:00

Getting started in tattooing is not like getting started in any other industry. It is more on par with old fashioned times, wherein which a person who wanted to learn a skill or a craft would have to find a mentor and apprentice underneath them, picking up the skill the old fashioned way: by doing it!This is mostly still the case for the tattoo industry. One side effect of this is that it is a bit harder to come upon information on all the "tools of the trade" so to speak. There are no textbooks out there called Tattoo Supplies 101! With this in mind, this article will look at the basics involves for tattooing supplies, with the beginner in mind as the reader. When discussing the basic tattoo supplies involved in this line of work, there are a handful of key pieces. Let us look at them one by one.1. The Tattoo Machine. Also sometimes called a tattoo gun, a term usually shunned by profession artists, the tattoo machine is the central tool used to give tattoos. They are a ton of different tattoo machines of not just different quality, but of different purposes and even size and shape. On this note, it is very important to have a tattoo machine that fits correctly into the hands of the artist!2. The Power Supply. Tattoo machines are not battery powered. This means they require an external source of power. Many prefer the power supplies that affix via a cable to the machine and then are turned on and off from an attached foot pedal. This is similar in technique to a sewing machines set up with a foot pedal.3. The Needles. Needles are what pierce the skin and deposit the ink into the skin itself, creating the tattoo. Artists use shader and liner needles to create different effects of various depths to create the tattoo. Needles are to be used once and then thrown away.4. The Different Types of Ink. Of course ink is also needed to make a tattoo. Tattooing ink is available in all colors, although black is the most readily available and read[...]

Runaway by Meg Cabot

2012-03-05T00:44:20.310-08:00

Runaway by Meg Cabot was graciously provided by Around the World Tours and is set to be released April 20, 2010. WARNING: This is the final book in a trilogy, so there are MAJOR spoilers below. I have already reviewed the first two books, Airhead and Being Nikki, and you are more than welcome to read those reviews to get caught up!The insanity has got to end!! Who knew that having your brain transplanted into the body of the most important teenage model would be such a pain? Well, that should have been obvious, but anyway. Em Watts has been parading around as Nikki Howard for a few months now and has kind of gotten into a routine. Unfortunately, the truth about what really happened to Nikki, and the fact that she's still alive and in someone else's body, has thrown a kink into the routine.Nikki learned the truth about what Robert Stark, the evil patriarch of the Stark Coporation, was doing with his new line of Stark Quark laptops. A secret that almost got her completely killed. Brandon Stark, the father-hating son of Robert Stark, is determined to find out this secret is and so he steals everyone away to his South Carolina villa to try bribing them into telling him what he wants to hear. Little did he expect a kidnap/rescue by Em's little sister with the help of Em/Nikki's BFF Lulu, and Em's sometimes boyfriend Christopher. When the truth is revealed about what the Quarks are capable of and how Robert Stark will use their capability, everything begins to crumble. Em has to find a way to save everyone she loves while trying not to get herself killed in the process. Yeah, because that's the easiest thing ever when you've already died once. This was a GREAT conclusion to this series. I gotta say that it had me worried at times with where it was going because I could feel it sliding off track, but it tied up the loose ends quite nicely. Watching Em grow into her new skin and learn to work with her new body, ins[...]

Best Tattoo Schools

2012-03-05T00:44:20.310-08:00

Tattoo SchoolsTattoo SchoolsThere are two schools of thought (excuse the pun), on this subject. The first - tattooing should only be taught the old fashioned way of doing a long term apprenticeship, with no pay and filled with months of cleaning the shop, being somewhat of a slave to the working artists, and sometimes being treated in a worthless manner. You can get an idea of the process from Miami Ink. I have talked to a couple of local shop owners and not only is this their method of teaching but it usually requires a substantial fee from the apprentice. Eventually, the future artist is allowed to practice the art and progress from there....The second - and more current approach is to actually attend a school or take a course in this popular art. These range from a quick 2 week course to months in duration. And yes, they are costly also, but the focus is on teaching the art of tattooing and using a hands-on approach. I am more familiar with this method and think it is a straight forward and valuable option to people searching a way to break in to this popular vocation. Unfortunately, some people are of the opinion this way is lame and not a reputable approach.Tattoo SchoolsI believe both approaches are valid and the idea of "tattoo schools" does not deserve the criticism it currently gets. There are a lot of people that have to work for a living and taking a course packed with instruction is their only option[...]

Whisper by Phoebe Kitanidis

2012-03-05T00:44:20.310-08:00

Whisper by Phoebe Kitanidis was provided by Around the World Tours and is set to be released April 27, 2010 by Balzer + Bray.Joy has grown up listening to other people's desires and not in the conventional manner. Joy can Hear what others desire. It's a kind of telepathy that has been passed down through the female generations of her family. Both Joy and her older sister Jessica ("Icka") have this ability but neither of them use it the same way. Joy likes to do just what her name suggests, she Hears people's desires and finds joy in giving them what they want. Icka can't seem to Hear anything but the worst from people, which is why she is an outcast in society. She can't seem to make or keep friends because of her Hearing issue.Icka received her nickname due to her foul attitude. And this foul attitude has gotten on Joy's last nerve. After years of ruined birthdays, the family has decided that this year is going to be different and disaster-free. Of course Icka manages to get some jabs in that morning, causing ruffled feathers among Joy's friends. This is the straw that breaks Joy's back. She tracks her sister down and blows up at her, making sure that Icka understands that she never wants to see, hear, or Hear her sister again. So when Icka doesn't come home that evening, Joy is content to be placated by her mother's explanation that Icka has gone to visit a local college. But by the next morning, following random clues, Joy realizes that Icka's not okay. And that she might just get her wish never to see Icka again. Now, with her newly-discovered, juvenile deliquent confidant, Joy must rush to find Icka before her sister does something to permanently silence the Whispers.I must say that this was a spectacular book! I really enjoyed this form of telepathic communication as it was different than many of the others that I've read about in these types of b[...]

Nostalgic Friday: Flowers for Algernon

2012-03-05T00:44:20.311-08:00

Welcome back to Nostalgic Friday! Since I love all things historical (culturally, physically, and personally) I do a post on Fridays honoring some awesome book that is a bit older. Many of them are books I enjoyed in my teens and others are books that I discovered as an adult that I think are relevant to YA readers. This week's selection is Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, which was originally published in short story format in 1959. It was turned into a book in 1966. I remember reading this in 7th grade and loving it because of the moral of the story. Be careful what you wish for, because you might not like it when you get it.Charlie Gordon is a mental handicapped adult (IQ of 68) who works a menial job. Not completely content with his lot in life, Charlie takes reading and writing classes at the local institution for retarded adults. As he improves, his teacher recommends that he be a candidate in an experimental surgery to improve mental function. The surgery has been proven a success on a small scale with the increased intelligence of the mouse Algernon. After the surgery and recovery, Charlie's IQ sky rockets to 185 and he begins to experience the world in a way he never has before. Unfortunately, it's not what he wants. Almost none of his experiences are positive as he had grown up understanding and interacting with the world one way and now that system no longer works for him. He can't relate nearly as well to other people or they to him.Soon thereafter, Algernon begins to reject the operation and after reverting back to his former intelligence, he dies. Charlie realizes that this is where he is headed and scrambles to try to repair the damage he has caused. While the subject matter is more serious and a little more sad than usual, I find that this book still[...]

STAR OF THE MONTH: John Gilbert

2012-03-05T00:44:20.311-08:00

Happy April Fool's Day! Don't worry, no pranks here. However, to commemorate the day, I have chosen to feature John Gilbert, a man who in the history of Hollywood most closely resembles fortune's fool.John is not recalled for being a gifted actor, a handsome heartthrob, or a gallant gentleman. He is referred to in the history books as the symbol of the silent-talkie disaster. The story is thus: when films made the transition to sound, Gilbert's career was "ruined," because his voice recorded at too high a register. He stood in the crowd at a screening of His Glorious Night, listened as the audience laughed at him, and ran away in tears. His career was over... What a bunch of bull!!! In truth, there was nothing at all wrong with John's voice, which-- according to his own ex-wife Leatrice Joy-- sounded closer to Joseph Cotten's scotch-coated drawl than to a pipsqueak girly-man. This fact becomes obvious when one watches any of his sound films: Queen Christina, Redemption, The Hollywood Revue of 1929, etc, (the latter two of which were released BEFORE His Glorious Night). As for his running out of the movie theater in embarrassment, John was on his honeymoon in Europe with Ina Claire when the film premiered and wasn't even present to witness it!! Any laughter exhibited by viewers was a nervous reaction to the now spoken, romantic dialogue, which was received with awkwardness during every sound film at the time. Lovey-doveyness is always better on the page. In Flesh and the Devil with Greta Garbo--the film on which they fell in love. So, what's the big idea? Why is John remembered incorrectly as a wash-out? The answer: because Louis B. Mayer wanted it that way. Mayer and Gilbert never got along, for reasons I referred[...]

13 Treasures by Michelle Harrison

2012-03-05T00:44:20.311-08:00

Tanya has seen the fairies her whole life and they've never been very kind to her. They have teased her and tormented her because she is the only person, that she knows of, who can see them and they don't take kindly to being exposed. After months of questionable incidents that have caused injuries to Tanya, and that she has had to explain away, her mother has had enough. Tanya is sent to her grandmother's estate to work out her "issues" while her mother takes a break in their home in London. Not in the least thrilled about being banished to the boring countryside with her stand-offish grandmother, Tanya is determined to make the best of her situation for as long as she can. The estate has fallen into disrepair as time has gone on. Very little of the house is used anymore as there are only four human inhabitants that live there. Florence (Tanya's grandmother), Warwick (the current groundskeeper), Warwick's father Amos (the now insane, former groundskeeper) and Warwick's son Fabian all share the space, unknowingly with several fairie creatures who love to cause mischief. As Tanya is the only one who can see these creatures, she does her best not to anger them and stay out of their way. Unfortunately it's not enough. As Fabian and Tanya begin to explore the more closed off portions of the estate, they make some interesting finds: secret passageways (and not just the servant kind), blocked off rooms, and forgotten promises. The house isn't the only thing hiding secrets though. When the two become lost in the woods while chasing Tanya's dog Oberon, they stumble upon a young girl with her own secrets. And her secrets are the dangerous sort that people never recover from. This was a classical fairy [...]

Waiting on Wednesday: Feed (Newsflesh, #1)

2012-03-05T00:44:20.311-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This week's selection is Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant and is set to be released May 1st 2010 by Orbit. The year was 2014. We had cured cancer. We had beat the common cold. But in doing so we created something new, something terrible that no one could stop. The infection spread, virus blocks taking over bodies and minds with one, unstoppable command: FEED.NOW, twenty years after the Rising, Georgia and Shaun Mason are on the trail of the biggest story of their lives-the dark conspiracy behind the infected. The truth will out, even if it kills them. From GoodreadsI'm a pretty big fan of books and movies dealing with "utopia creation" and "diseases gone wrong" like 28 Days Later (movie) or I Am Legend (book, the movie wasn't the same). Nautrally, this one seems right up my alley. Nothing like a good "fight to survive" to get your blood pumping. I find that these scenarios work better for me in book format because the mind has limitless capacity for visualizing action, whereas in a movie, you are stuck with the writer/director/actor's vision. Hopefully Feed will give me the good thrill I'm looking for in and expose teens to the wide and varied world of horror. So what are you waiting on?[...]

Queen of Secrets by Jenny Meyerhoff

2012-03-05T00:44:20.312-08:00

Queen of Secrets by Jenny Meyerhoff was supplied by Around the World Tours and is set to be released June 22, 2010.Esther "Essie" Green is ecstatic to be a sophomore on the cheerleading squad! She's been dreaming of getting to do this for quite some time and believes that it will help her place in the high school hierarchy immensely. She's starting to learn her place when she gets a shock: her cousin, Micah is on the football team. As if that's not bad enough, Micah is quite staunch in his religious beliefs and wears his kippah even while playing football. Essie is mortified, until she realizes that no one knows they are related. She decides to keep that a secret, so it won't hurt her chances of moving up in station. As the school year progresses, the football team members continue to pick on Micah for being "weird" and even manage to toilet-paper his house. Essie doesn't know what to do with herself. On the one hand, she has gained popularity and even attracted the attention of her longtime crush Austin, but at what cost? Is getting to be popular and feeling overly-cherished more important than standing up for what's right?I really wanted to like this book. I really did. I went in thinking that this was an interesting premise (especially with the religious element) and that I could really get behind it, but I found this book lacked a lot. The characters were very... predictable. Almost cliché actually. There didn't seem to be any real emotion behind the characters' actions other than jealousy and guilt. While I did enjoy watching Essie grow as a person, I felt it took way too long. The story was just dragging along waiting for her to fin[...]

My Invisible Boyfriend by Susie Day

2012-03-05T00:44:20.312-08:00

My Invisible Boyfriend by Susie Day was supplied by Around the World Tours and is set to be released April 1, 2010.Heidi is accustomed to being odd-girl-out. With parents who like to flit across the country in search of the next struggling school in dire need of their assistance, she is used to being the new girl who never quite fits in. Fortunately, at the latest stop she has managed to find a gang of kids quite like her. That is until after summer vacation.Heidi comes back expecting that everything will pick up where it left off, but the party changes everything. At the annual "let's get rid of our stashes so they aren't confiscated" party, Heidi turns down a guy. Automatically her friends assume that she is seeing someone; and just so she doesn't feel left out, she doesn't correct them.So she makes up an amazing sounding guy, complete with an online profile. Everyone tells her how amazing he since, this motorcycle-riding, Shakespearean sonnet-writing Romeo. He's so amazing, that her friends start contacting him for advice about everything; including what to do about Heidi. As if your friends not liking you as much as you thought they did isn't bad enough, someone has discovered the truth and is threatening to uncover her secret. Heidi is now thrown headfirst into the truth. She must decide whether her friends deserve to hear the truth from her or if she just doesn't care anymore. Her lies are about to catch up to her and there's nothing she can do about it. Or is there?Sadly, this book was not as great as I thought it was going to be. Heidi was just too wishy-washy for my tastes. She is triumphing over her f[...]

CAST-AWAYS: Part One

2012-03-05T00:44:20.312-08:00

The acting business is very competitive. Many assume that once an actor has reached some sort of acclaim or stardom, his scrambling for work is over. Not so. All kinds of tangled bits of politics go into casting films. Sometimes, an actor may pass on a role, leaving it open to someone who previously would never have had the chance. (The former actor normally winds up kicking himself)! Sometimes, an impassioned actress rallies for a part only to be told by the studios that she isn't big enough box-office, right for it, etc, and it is handed to someone else. But, there are merits to the decisions some of the big-wigs make, and though it is a rough biz, the people on top often do make the right decisions, casting the perfect person for the perfect role. Happy accidents and calculated risks... It's all movie history. But, just for fun, let's play a game of imagination called: What if?Jean the Scene-Stealer:It seems that some people are chosen for fame, even if they don't want it. Jean Harlow is one of those human phenomenons who was born to be a movie star-- beautiful, talented, charismatic-- despite her own wishes.  She didn't have her eyes on acting when it came after her. Unlike the other young ladies dying to be discovered, this lovely little sexpot from Kansas City became a sensation without even lifting a finger. Her fame was predicted by leading lady of the silents, Clara Bow, herself. When Clara saw the svelte and sexy extra on the set of her film The Saturday Night Kid, she panicked! The bombshell was a definite threat. At first, Clara wanted Jean[...]

Waiting on Wednesday: Whisper

2012-03-05T00:44:20.313-08:00

Waiting on Wednesday recognizes that we as bookies pine for books. This post is about what I am impatiently waiting for right now. It was started by Jill at Breaking the Spine. This week's selection is Whisper by Phoebe Kitanidis and is set to be released April 27th 2010 by Balzer + Bray.Joy is used to hearing Whispers. She’s used to walking down the street and instantly knowing people’s deepest, darkest desires. She uses this talent for good, to make people happy and give them what they want. But for her older sister, Jessica, the family gift is a curse, and she uses it to make people’s lives—especially Joy’s—miserable.Still, when Joy hears a frightening whisper from Jessica's own mind, she knows she has to save her sister, even if it means deserting her friends, stealing a car and running away with a boy she barely knows—a boy who may have a dark secret of his own. From GoodreadsSo, yeah. This sounds very mysterious. I get the whispers and that both the sisters have the gift, but I really want to know what would cause Joy to "desert[ing] her friends, steal[ing] a car and run[ning] away with a boy she barely knows." That just sounds far out there. I can't imagine something (other than murdering someone or committing a MAJOR crime) that would cause me to do all that. That being said, this synopsis has peaked my interest in "hearing voices." Hope it's going to be a good one.So what are you waiting on?[...]

Shifters Series by Rachel Vincent Mini-Reviews Part 1

2012-03-05T00:44:20.313-08:00

I did a similar post on the Mercy Thompson series that I love so much by Patricia Briggs a few months ago. Well seeing as how I have managed to fall in love with yet another shifter series, I figured I would do a post about it as well.Rachel Vincent's werecat Shifters series, staring the completely fallible and wonderful colorful Faythe Sanders, is a fun, quickly-paced series covering six novels. We meet Faythe when she is summoned home from grad school for her own protection. Needless to say, she doesn't go back to school what with all the kidnappings, attempted murders, oh and over-protective ex-fiances hanging around. The books follow Faythe as she tries to navigate her very modern self-existence within the rather 1950's view of a tabby in her pride. She's smart, she's sassy, she's stubborn, and most of all she just wants to live her life without it being dictated to her. I feel that all women can relate to her, and even some men can, on some level or another. Below you'll find a synopsis/mini-review for the first three books. The other three will be provided in a later post.See my full review of Stray.StrayAll Faythe wanted was to be left alone. She was working on her graduate degree, but the werecat community just couldn't leave her alone. After fighting off a stray (a once human, made into a werecat through an illegal attack; no pride) Faythe is summoned home for safety. Someone is snatching tabbies and they're not giving them back. Despite all precautions to the contrary[...]

Beautiful Dead: Jonas by Eden Maguire

2012-03-05T00:44:20.313-08:00

Darina is seeing ghosts. Literally. Her recently deceased boyfriend Phoenix is following her around. The doctors say it's normal to see someone you love, who has recently died, in places that you associate with them. So why does she see him where he has no business being?Darina stumbled upon the old farmhouse while out for a drive to clear her head. Not only does she find Phoenix there, but she also finds the three other kids form their high school who have died this year and a few others. They are the "Beautiful Dead." These people have unresolved issues and have been chosen to come back, with phenomenal powers, for one year to clear any misgivings they have with the human world.Unfortunately, the "Beautiful Dead" cannot do their work on their own. They have chosen to have Darina as their contact with the human world. She will be their eyes and ears and search out the wrong-doings keeping them on Earth. First up is Jonas. He died in a motorcycle accident that they town has labeled as his fault. Jonas knows better and so does the other person who was on the bike at the time. Can Darina unlock the clues in the little amount of time she's allotted? What does it mean if she succeeds? And what will it cost should she fail? This fast-paced novel was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end. Honestly, a girl who can see and talk to those beyond the land of the living sounds very mundane, but the powers that they have and the fact that she is still influe[...]

Nostalgic Friday: Nectar in a Sieve

2012-03-05T00:44:20.314-08:00

Welcome back to Nostalgic Friday! Since I love all things historical (culturally, physically, and personally) I do a post on Fridays honoring some awesome book that is a bit older. Many of them are books I enjoyed in my teens and others are books that I discovered as an adult that I think are relevant to YA readers. This week's selection is a book I read my sophomore year of high school. Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya was originally published in 1954.The story follows the thoughts of Rukmani, an elderly Indian woman, as she looks back on her life from childhood through adulthood.Rukmani was the four daughter of a former wealthy family. Unfortunately, after so many dowries and the decline of her family's status, there is very little to offer to any prospective suitors. Thus Rukmani is married off to a poor tenant farmer named Nathan. In a stroke of luck, he is a kind, lovely man who is content to have someone to work alongside him and bear his children. When Rukmani has trouble delivering the sons that are needed in order to bring honor to her family, she secretly begins fertility treatments with a local doctor. The treatments are an enormous success. A little too much so as the little family of three that was scraping by with a little leftover, is now a huge family of eight. The family continues to creep along, but times are changing. No longer is working the land enough to get by, especial[...]
