Tue, 06 Dec 2016 16:03:26 -0500

One might reasonably question, who is this man Scott Lively and how did he acquire so much foreign influence? As we have seen in the presidential election, rhetoric is powerful. The right words at the right time to the right audience can move the most unthinkable of mountains -- for good or for ill.

Where Do the Lies About LGBTIs in Africa Come From?

Thu, 20 Aug 2015 17:48:25 -0400

The most effective way to counter lies is to tell the truth again and again: African LGBTIs are not awash with money. Declaring yourself pro-gay does not incite a tidal wave of Western cash to come your way. LGBTIs are not a foreign contagion.

A Heartbreaking Story From One of the World's Most Transphobic Places

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 16:15:27 -0400

When President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law, he changed the lives of all LGBTI people in Uganda, one of the most dangerous countries for gay and transgender people. For my friend Cleopatra Kambugu, it was one of the worst days of her life.

Fri, 27 Mar 2015 16:56:15 -0400

Earlier today a bill was signed into law in Indiana that will allow business owners to deny services to LGBT people based on religious objections. Putting It Together in 2015

Mon, 12 Jan 2015 12:00:39 -0500

We don't have to be the same to give each other credit and respect. We don't have to be bossy to teach. Our differences challenge us, but also enrich us.

Who Are We to Judge (Uganda)?

Fri, 19 Dec 2014 23:03:30 -0500

What tests my patience, what troubles me beyond all else, is our propensity for pointing the finger at others while ignoring our own flaws. The truth is that the U.S. is not yet at a point where it can self-righteously condemn others for their intolerance toward LGBT people, at least not with a straight face. Someday we will get there, and we will lead by example. But not today.

Focus on Uganda's LGBT Bill Is a Lesson in Our Hypocrisy

Wed, 03 Dec 2014 17:37:51 -0500

Surely everyone reading this is well aware of the issues surrounding the LGBT bill in Uganda. And as the world leapt to its feet, passionately denouncing this one bill in this one country, I waited for that same outrage to be directed at all the other places where this is happening in equal measure. I'm still waiting.

Summoning the Ancestors

Mon, 10 Nov 2014 12:51:14 -0500

Death stalks each generation in its own way, as activist David Mixner reminded us last week. He movingly recounted assisting the suicides of friends who were suffering through the final stages of AIDS in the 1980s. Testaments like his must be given if the new generation is to have any idea of the price that was paid by those who came before.
