Hello, some small upset here earlier as i just found out things didn't add up at my first post today, and i'm re uploading as i write this. Things happen, earlier i found out why i had no tv this weekend the connection cable had come lose as i shifted the new decoder forward..all on my knees under my big desk, ah yes the simplest of causes. Now, i still have to organise the channels as there's too much i dont bother with, and favourite channels at position 40 or higher, luxury duh. Today were still in Mali a stable democracy these last decades and their age old music tradition is certainly a stabilising factor. We've had a guitariist a Kora player and today it's one of the countries most famous voices...xxxxxKassé Mady’s timeless music is borne out of the West African tradition of the griot, a cultural figure and oral historian whose role is to record cultural identity and knowledge through oratory, lyricism and musicianship. Kasse Mady's family, the Diabates of Kela, were the traditional singers for the emperors and their descendants of the royal Keita lineages. They can trace their role back 700 years and are still considered among the most important and authoritative griot families across the seven West African countries where Mande culture predominates. Kela is the capital of the griots, the Mecca of musical tradition. All of Kassé Mady cousins, brothers, sisters, know how to sing without micro before thousands of people, but Kassé Mady is different because of his sweet and gentle though powerful voice. Kasse Mady Diabate was born in Kéla, Mali, in 1949. At 20, he was already famous in Kangaba, the old Mandingo capital. Demba Diallo, the governor of the Kangaba district formed an orchestra and asked him to join it as a singer. For the first time, Kassé Mady experienced electric music. Within a few years he has become the premiere Malinke singer (dominant ethnic group in Mandingo country). His fame reached Bamako, and in 1972 the Youth Ministry named him as singer in the Badema National Orchestra. Until 1988, Kasse Mady led a double carrier of griot for men in high places and in popular parties and polyvalent singer with an electric orchestra in the capital. Apart from the large amount of the Badéma's tapes dispatched in the Mandingo country, Kasse Mady had had no other opportunity to make an album in solo. In 1988 Ibrahima Sylla, the producer of many African hits asks the famous arranger Boncana Maïga to record a solo album with Kasse Mady. Throughout the 1970s he played in Malian fusion bands before emigrating to Paris where he recorded his first solo album in 1988. Albums since have included 2003’s Kassi Kasse, recorded in Mali and featuring guest appearances by kora player Toumani Diabate and bass player Orlando Cachaito López (Buena Vista Social Club). It was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album. He has also guested on albums for Toumani Diabate and Taj Mahal. His solo album Manden Djeli Kan was recorded in France in 2008.Kassé Mady Diabaté - Kassi Kasse (02 163mb)01 Eh Ya Ye (4:21)02 Kaba Mansa (4:09)03 Maimouna (3:43)04 Nyamalo (3:33)05 Jon Kunandi (4:50)06 N'i Ma Sori (3:16)07 Namanike (5:02)08 Fununke Saya (4:33)09 Naaren (5:44)10 Balomina Mwanga (4:54)11 Balakono (6:06)12 Lafia Jeli (6:57 )13 Madu Jeli (6:09) 14 Danya (3:38)xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxHe's a griot, descended from a long line of traditional musicians, and there's a confidence and sense of authority to his powerful singing, which can ease between the conversational and declamatory. Most of his songs are self-written and medium paced, with variety provided by his impressive backing musicians, including members of the Symmetric Orchestra. Toumani Diabaté makes an appearance playing kora on the exquisite and passionate Nankoumandjian, while the Symmetric's Fantamady Kouyaté provides some impressive guit[...]

Charlie Sheen At The Oscars

2012-03-04T01:47:32.562-08:00

I know, I know. You're expecting a fashion filled extravaganza which reflects last night's Academy Awards ceremony, aren't you? (Don't get me wrong. I see no reason to not include pictures of the astonishingly lovely Sandra Bullock in this post. Different doesn't have to mean crazy or short-sighted!) Well, you would have gotten it if it hadn't been for my cousin who suggested that I pay attention to a little Twitter fad that took off during the Super Bowl. It seems as if someone had started a hashtag on Twitter called JaneAustenAtTheSuperBowl. And it was just what it sounds like. It was Jane Austen musings as if she were at the Super Bowl. (By the way, just so I'm not too hip for the room, a hashtag is this symbol: #. It designates a specific topic on Twitter. And also, just so I'm clear, Twitter is pretty useless most of the time. My participating in this nonsense should not be interpreted as any sort of indication that I think Twitter is cool. I don't.)Thus, with that sort of seed planted in my often empty noggin, I thought that the Oscars would need a voice. Maybe not a Jane Austen sort of voice, as a friend of mine was completely appalled that anyone would disgrace the works of Jane Austen (she's really into bonnet movies and bonnet books), but a voice none the less. Then it hit me. Or I fell down because I was drunk. Whichever it was, I had a revelation. What the Oscars needed was more Charlie Sheen. Thus, I created the hashtag #CharlieSheenAtTheOscars and twat periodically throughout the telecast which I occasionally watched. What? Twat is the past tense of tweet, right? I will tweet. I am tweeting. I have twat. Sounds right to me. And don't think that I ever expected anyone to notice this little method of amusing myself. I didn't. And I think I succeeded by setting my expectations as low as I usually do for things like this. So, since I know you missed it, allow me to take you through the Academy Awards show as seen through the tweets of a very real, yet very fictional Charlie Sheen. Behold! At Kodak Theater. Walk w/me side by side as we march up the steps of justice to right this unconscionable wrong. #CharliesheenattheoscarsRoll out that red carpet if you want, but I'm rolling out magic bro and I must save it for my family. #CharliesheenattheoscarsNo one has acknowledged me yet. I should have been walking in to sandwiches, massages and hand jobs. #Charliesheenattheoscars No one has even said hello. I feel like an unwelcome relative given cold coffee every night at nine o’clock.#Charliesheenattheoscars Showtime! Find the most comfortable seat in the house, lean back and watch—it’s about to get really gnarly. #Charliesheenattheoscars Can't believe they didn't ask me to host. These two suck. I've got poetry in my fingertips.#Charliesheenattheoscars Screw hosting because that’s where you get slaughtered. That’s where you get embarrassed. From the prom queen. #Charliesheenattheoscars My tux is uncomfortable. It doesn't fit because my chest and my biceps are too big. #Charliesheenattheoscars I have effortlessly and magically converted your tin can into pure gold statuettes. #Charliesheenattheoscars First award of the night handed out. Winning! #CharliesheenattheoscarsThe first statuette is free. The next one goes in your mouth. #CharliesheenattheoscarsNo one at my table has won anything. I'm dealing with fools and trolls here. #CharliesheenattheoscarsTo all the losers: I have real fame, you have nothing. You have zero. I probably have syphilis. #CharliesheenattheoscarsI don't care who wins. I will forget about them as the last image of them exits this beautiful theater. #CharliesheenattheoscarsThere's Natalie Portman. It might be lonely up here but I sure like the view. #CharliesheenattheoscarsI am special, and I[...]

2012-03-04T01:47:32.562-08:00

Hello, for the coming 3 months not an audio book series but 12 lectures/talks held by one of the greatest American writers/thinkers of the last century, i hope you take some time to listen to what he has to say to us all. xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxRobert Anton Wilson (born Robert Edward Wilson, January 18, 1932 – January 11, 2007) was an American author and polymath who became at various times a novelist, philosopher, psychologist, essayist, editor, playwright, futurist, civil libertarian and self-described agnostic mystic. Recognized as an episkopos, pope, and saint of Discordianism, Wilson helped publicize the group through his writings, interviews, and strolls.Wilson claimed in Cosmic Trigger: Volume 1 "not to believe anything", since "belief is the death of intelligence". He described this approach as "Maybe Logic.". Wilson saw his work as an "attempt to break down conditioned associations, to look at the world in a new way, with many models recognized as models or maps, and no one model elevated to the truth". His goal being "to try to get people into a state of generalized agnosticism, not agnosticism about God alone but agnosticism about everything". Wilson suffered from polio as a child, the effects remained with Wilson throughout his life, usually manifesting as minor muscle spasms causing him to use a cane occasionally until 2000, when he experienced a major bout with post-polio syndrome that would continue until his death. He attended Catholic grammar school, subsequently Brooklyn Technical High School to remove himself from the Catholic influence. While working as an ambulance driver Wilson attended New York University, studying engineering and mathematics. He worked as an engineering aide, a salesman, a copywriter, and as associate editor of Playboy magazine from 1965 to 1971. In 1979 he received a Ph.D. in psychology from Paideia University in California, later he reworked his dissertation, and it found publication in 1983 as Prometheus Rising. Wilson married freelance writer and poet Arlen Riley in 1958; they had four children. Their youngest daughter Luna—beaten to death in an apparent robbery in the store where she worked in 1976 at the age of 15—became the first person to have her brain preserved by the Bay Area Cryonics Society. Arlen Riley Wilson died in 1999 following a series of strokes.Among Wilson's 35 books, and many other works, perhaps his best-known volumes remain the cult classic series. The Illuminatus! Trilogy (1975), co-authored with Robert Shea. Advertised as "a fairy tale for paranoids," the three books--The Eye in the Pyramid, The Golden Apple, and Leviathan, soon offered as a single volume—philosophically and humorously examined, among many other themes, occult and magical symbolism and history, the counterculture of the 1960s, secret societies, data concerning author H.P. Lovecraft and author and occultist Aleister Crowley, and American paranoia about conspiracies. Wilson wrote two more popular fiction series. The first, a trilogy later published as a single volume, was Schrödinger's Cat. The second, The Historical Illuminatus Chronicles, appeared as three books. In between publishing the two trilogies Wilson released a stand-alone novel, Masks of the Illuminati (1981) A play by Wilson, Wilhelm Reich in Hell (published as a book in 1987 and first performed at the Edmund Burke Theatre in Dublin. In the nonfiction and partly autobiographical Cosmic Trigger I: The Final Secret of the Illuminati (1977) and its two sequels, as well as in many other works, Wilson examined Freemasons, Discordianism, Sufism, the Illuminati, Futurology, Zen Buddhism, Dennis and Terence McKenna, Jack Parsons, the occult practices of Aleister Crowley and G.I. Gurdjieff, Yoga, and [...]

Step Away From The Chicken

2012-03-04T01:47:32.566-08:00

I think that it's safe to say that most of us here have been drunk at one point or another. Like Thursday, for example. But timelines aside, I think that for those of us who have been overserved (by ourselves or by the kindness of others), we've all done things that we weren't exactly overly proud of the next day. And while I might have had some...interesting antics, I've gotta say that I have never been so drunk that I defiled the poultry section of a Kroger. Wait. You never...what now?You heard me. I never defiled the poultry section of a Kroger. Then again, I am not a one 58-year old (and old enough to know better) Jerry Patterson of North Little Rock, Arkansas. According to MSNBC, "Police were called to the (Kroger) to investigate a report of a drunk man who was being verbally aggressive with store workers." You know, the being aggressive with other folks really isn't compulsory drunken behavior. Why must so many people behave as if it is? Be happy drunks! Don't be mean. Mean behavior only results in the cops being called and you likely going to jail. When the cops got there, they found what many would consider to be your typical drunken symptoms. The unsteadiness on one's feet. The reeking of alcohol. The incredibly bloodshot eyes. And in this case, they also found an individual with a recently emptied bladder and ham breath. You see, it would appear that Mr. Patterson had allegedly "...urinated on $500 worth of chicken". Five hundred dollars worth? That's an awful lot of chicken. If it weren't so disgusting, I'd be pretty impressed. The police report also indicted that Mr. Patterson "...also ate a large package of ham". OK, see, the chicken peeing? That I don't get. Being famished when drunk? I totally get that. There's something about all of the drunkenness that makes feel as if they are absolutely starving. And that's when everything sounds good. Hershey bars dipped in marinara sauce? Delicious. Frozen fish stick sliders (with the fish sticks still slightly frozen)? Awesome. Low-fat potato chips dipped in a jar of pre-made gravy? Breakfast! The behavior itself is totally understandable and acceptable. The arena in which this chap chose to practice this behavior, while still understandable, is not quite as acceptable as when you're doing it in the comfort of your own drunken palace. Mr. Patterson was arrested and charged with a variety of offensive offenses, including "...public intoxication, theft of property, and criminal mischief." Criminal mischief? Geez, I'd say! I wonder when he ate the ham? Do you think he was peeing at the time of the ingestion of one of the tastiest of all of the cured and salted meats? Sometimes when you're drunk you get really obsessed with multi-tasking. Maybe he thought that he'd just go to the store, get something to eat and relieve himself all at the same time. And it worked, but it got him arrested in the process. Always thinking ahead. Always. And never pee on the chicken in the grocery store. Once you get home with your chicken, you can do whatever you'd like to it. Just don't get caught and don't be telling me about it. Weirdo.[...]

Sundaze 1109 Cosmic Space

2012-03-04T01:47:32.566-08:00

Hello, i was somewhat in dubio if this album fits the Sundaze label, there's some fridaynights groove bleeding thru specially on disc 1 but i have to be broadminded here, besides i wouldn't know where else to post this labour of love by 2 artists that have given us so much Sundaze as Future Sound Of London or the moniker in use here, Amorphous Andronygous. It's obvious thesse guys have been into psychedelics for a long time now and some of what they picked up along the way is shared here. Don't be put of by the fact you hardly reckognize a name, I just knew 24 of the 44 which goes to show there's always more to learn.Jung described the "psyche" as containing both conscious and unconscious mind, so you would think that a lot of the tracks on a "psychedelic" collection like this would really stir things up, shake you by the bootstraps and bring weird creatures and landscapes bubbling up from the primitive unconscious....Hmm well let me know if it tickles..xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxWell it's not often you come across a rockstar praising other peoples albums on camera so i thought i'd grab the 2 min clip for your infotainment. title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4X97xCzMrxU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>Since the late 90s, Amorphous Androgynmous AKA The Future Sound Of London AKA Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans have been weaving together two-hour broadcasts of their favourite records that could be loosely classed as 'Cosmic Space Music'. After ten years of messing with our heads via the wireless, they now pick their choicest mind-melting moments on what promises to be a fine series of double cds. It's a collection that perfectly runs the gauntlet from kitsch to uber cool. The boys are, of course, expert at weaving this stuff into a pleasing journey through the backroads of your mind with, yes, the odd wrong turn. For every Nick Nicely ersatz psych moment there's the messed up funk of Miles' Rated X; and the cod Jamaican nonsense of something like Donovan's twee Riki Tiki Tavi is easily negated by the wah-wah moonstomp of Can's Flow Motion. The pleasure is in the bumps, twists and turns. In thee end the mix of old and new material is great, especially when the ancient and modern coalesce in such a way as to muddle any era identification.Despite the occasional transitional discrepancy, this is definitely a consciousness expanding mix. Not Working Means You Don't Work

2012-03-04T01:47:32.568-08:00

If you ask anyone other than Charlie Sheen, they will tell you that Charlie Sheen seems a little crazy these days. In fact, most folks will tell you that it sounds as if Charlie Sheen has gone completely off the rails. But they would only say that because he sounds exactly like that is what has happened. He sounds like a crazy man. And he keeps calling into various radio talk shows to try to profess that he's not a crazy man, but I really think that's doing him more harm than good at this point. Really, I think that what would help him the most is just to keep quiet for a little while and stop irritating people who pay his salary. The other thing that would help him to not look so crazy is for him to stop saying that he's going to show up for work on Monday when there is no work to show up for. Wait. What?Correct. See, for some reason, the guys that are in charge of the gold mine that is the television show Two And A Half Men have decided to cancel the remainder of the production season. The show has already been on hiatus for a few weeks while Mr. Sheen is supposed to be trying to kick his unhealthy ways. Apparently, things like trashing hotel rooms because you think a $20,000 hooker stole your watch and going on weekend cocaine binges coupled with unlimited sex with various mattress actresses really gets the attention of your "superiors" and causes them to think that you might have "a problem". Go figure. But the other thing that catches the attention of your "superiors" are saying things in interviews that aren't exactly complimentary to those who are in charge. Most people, in charge of anything or not, would not take kindly to being called, among other things, "...a stupid . . little man and a p***y punk." And "This contaminated little maggot can't handle my power . . . Clearly I have defeated this earthworm with my words." (By the way, in that first quote, the redacted part does not say 'puppy'. I thought I should throw that in there just in case you were confused as to why he would be calling someone a puppy. He wasn't. It was more of a feline insult, if you will.) So after all of this attention getting and even after all of the times that Charlie Sheen has been saying that he doesn't have a problem with anything, the New York Post reports: "Claiming he is completely sober, actor Charlie Sheen said today he plans to show up for work despite CBS's decision yesterday to pull the plug on the top-rated comedy "Two and a Half Men" this season." OK, see, those are not the actions of a person who is completely sober. Or maybe they are, but the person is just sober AND crazy. You see, Charlie, there's no work to show up for! That's part of what they mean by they have cancelled the remainder of the season! There's no more work there. It's done. And your showing up is only going to serve to make you look crazier than you already do. Please don't show up for your non-existent job/work on Monday, Charlie. Please. I realize that the show's character was sort of written just for someone like you, but even the character wouldn't show up for work when there was no work there for him. He'd stay home. You should do the same. Stay home with one of your female porn enthusiasts and stop giving interviews that make you sound like your brain is riddled with a late stage syphillitic condition. [...]

Cameron Diaz on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live': "I love porn!"

2012-03-04T01:47:32.569-08:00

Cameron Diaz visited 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' Thursday night to promote her upcoming movie 'Bad Teacher,' in which she smokes pot, gets lathered up at a car wash in Daisy Dukes and chases her real-life ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. But it was her love of adult movies that kept Kimmel's attention.

"I love porn!" she exclaimed. Cameron went on to talk about how easy it is to order porn on the sly in hotels.

"You know what I love about hotels? How discreet they are," she said. "They always give you that little thing at the bottom - 'Your room will be charged the same as any other room, no titles will be used.'"

It's not the first time Cameron has talked about her raging libido. Last year she told Playboy she is "always traveling for cock."

Kim Cattrall Plays Pole Dancer in New Movie

2012-03-04T01:47:32.569-08:00

After spending most of her career as the saucy Samantha in Sex and the City, Kim Cattrall is set to raise some eyebrows again in her latest movie role playing the ageing porn star Monica Velour - a part which includes a pole dance scene.

Not that Kim Cattrall appearing in a risqué scene is particulary news worthy, of course, but it does breakaway from her famous stint as SATC's Samantha. And The Daily Express also reliably inform us that the film's director, Keith Beardem, asked Cattrall to put on weight and lose some of her trademark glamour for the role.

"(I told her) 'You need to gain weight, and the goal is to blow people's image of you into tiny little pieces'," said Bearden. "'I'm going to make you look bad at every turn.'"

So although playing a character that has lots of sex won't be much of a departure for the actress, it seems that she is taking a bold step away from the glitz and glamour of New York's best known party girl and opting for something a bit grittier.

The film is about a chap called Tobe (Dustin Ingram) who goes on a quest to meet his favourite porn star, Monica Velour, and is already being hailed as a return to the Weird Science school of 80s comedies. The film was first shown at the Tribeca Film Festival last April and is set to be released in the US in a couple of months (no confirmed UK release date as yet).

Diana Ross

2012-03-04T01:47:32.569-08:00

Diana Ross, the daughter of Ernestine (née Moten) (January 27, 1916 – October 9, 1984), a schoolteacher, and Fred Ross, Sr. (July 4, 1920 – November 21, 2007), a former United States Army soldier, was born at Hutzel Women's Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Ross said she didn't see her father until he returned from the service. Much has been made of whether her actual first name ends in an "a" or an "e." According to Miss Ross, her mother actually named her "Diane". A clerical error resulted in her name being cited as "Diana" on her birth certificate. Her high school yearbook lists her first name as "Diana". At The Supremes' first Copacabana engagement in 1965, she introduced herself to the audience as "Diane." Later that year, according to his autobiography, "To Be Loved", Berry Gordy suggested Ross begin introducing herself as "Diana".

After living at 635 Belmont Avenue in Detroit's North End for several years, Ross's family settled on St. Antoine Street in the Brewster-Douglass housing projects on Diana's fourteenth birthday in 1958. Ross aspired to be a fashion designer, and studied design, millinery, pattern-making and seamstress skills while attending Cass Technical High School, a four-year college preparatory magnet school, in downtown Detroit. She was a majorette, on the school's swim team, studied cosmetology in the evenings & modeling(via a loan from former neighbor, William "Smokey" Robinson)on the weekends. In her late teens, Ross worked at Hudson's Department Store where, it was claimed in biographies, that she was the first black employee "allowed outside the kitchen". Ross graduated in January 1962, one semester earlier than her classmates. Ross' parents had a difficult marriage and separated when Ross was still in her teens.

Hello, well i got a new provider, the telephone works, internet does, though speeds are far from promised yet, but the 50 tv channels are yet to come thru, there's always something... Anyway you might have heard the news that LCD soundsystem is no more, considering their latest album not really a surprise, as they say "the thrill is gone", us ironic dance-music fans will have to fall back on something else, meanwhile todays to order compilation does a good job. Some promo hardcopy's made it into the world aswell..go figure, oh well they sure were a party ensemble. Second offering today is an odd one out but not really. Kraftwerk were committed to acquiring the latest technology when it became available in the 1970s and 80s, Moore's Law means that those machines could eventually be roughly approximated for very little cost. It's at times striking to realize how closely these 8-bit artists with their Gameboys and Commodore 64s can come to Kraftwerk's sound when so inclined. For you to find out...xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxPost-punk post-funk punk-funk, new wave that also sounds like no wave, tunes that make dancers confused as to whether they should pogo or do the pelvic thrust, music that incorporates all other musics. LCD Soundsystem debuted with Losing My Edge, a single that became one of the most talked-about indie releases of 2002. , the track was also one of the first released on the DFA label. Several magazines and newspapers would eventually declare James Murphy, the man behind both LCD Soundsystem and DFA, to be one of the coolest people on the planet. Whilst in the studio working on the official second album, James Murphy has been kind enough in the meantime to compile a remix album that's good enough. Introns, a collection of b-sides, remixes, and other rarities, is a fresh spin on the breakout success of their 2005 self-titled release. With some of the biggest names in electronic music onboard, well-known tracks like the siren-heavy "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House (Soulwax Shibuya Mix)" get high-energy updates for the dance crowd while others, such as "Tribulations (Tiga's Out of the Trance Closet Mix)", are washed with a darker mood, and "Your City's A Sucker" and "Slowdive (xfm session)" represent the more dissonant, experimental side of the project. All flawlessly executed, the range of styles are also a testament to James Murphy's ingeniously laconic vocals.LCD Soundsystem - Introns (142mb) 01 Yr City's A Sucker 5:28 02 Daft Punk Is Playing At My House (Soulwax Shibuya Mix) 6:33 03 Disco Infiltrator (FK's Infiltrated Vocal) 7:46 04 Disco Infiltrator (FK's Infiltrated Dub) 7:18 05 Slowdrive (Xfm Session) 4:10 06 Tribulations (Lindstrom Mix) 7:56 07 On Repeat (Xfm Session) 6:48 08 Thrills (Xfm Session) 3:32 09 Too Much Love (Rub 'N' Tug Mix) 8:30xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxThis Kraftwerk covers compilation was somewhat unique in the fact that Kraftwerk's Ralf Hütter selected the final track line-up, Later Hutter said he enjoyed it and even offered some editing suggestions. How To Organize Your Computer Cables

2012-03-04T01:47:32.570-08:00

I hate cable and cord mess! But I haven't been able to conquer it. I'm thinking about it and while I'm researching the question I thought I would show you some of the wonderful ideas people have come up with. For those of us who are thrifty there are hair clips, pipe cleaners, a cut trouser sock, binder clips, toilet or paper towel rolls, rubber bands, plastic baggies, and bread ties. You can make things work. And you can purchase items specifically for corraling cables.I have a couple of priorities1) I need to be able to unplug and transport easily. If I need to take the laptop to the library; or the desk top to be repaired; or purchase a new computer the cables have to be able to unplug and go easily. So some of these ideas are a little too permanent. For instance, I take my power cord and mouse with my laptop so I have to be able to unplug and throw in the computer bag easily. The Girl Scout Scissor Stabbin' Badge

2012-03-04T01:47:32.571-08:00

I think that we can all pretty much agree that Girl Scout cookies are freaking delicious. Just how delicious might be up to personal interpretation, but there isn't much denying that they're delicious. That they come around only once a year can be a bit stressful. You really need to ration your cookies and, more importantly, you really need to be prepared for when they are gone. Because when they are gone, that's it. They're really gone. Therefore, if you were expecting to still have some Girl Scout cookies left and found out that you suddenly had none, that could make an individual rather angry. I don't know if I could justify that it's the stabbing someone sort of angry, but angry none the less.Let's go down to Flori-duh where this sort of crap seems to always be occurring and see what happened in the case of a one Hersha Howard. (Hersha? All right. I guess.) According to the folks over there at MSNBC, Ms. Howard noticed that her Thin Mints were gone. Eaten, if you will. She then "...confronted her sleeping roommate and accused her of eating the box of treats." Her roommate, a one Jasmin Wanke (Wanke? That's a pretty name.), told her that "... she'd given the cookies to Howard's kids, who were awake and hungry around 1 a.m." Huh. These folks seem to live a very different life than the one I currently live and the one that I grew up living. I'm sure that, as a small child, I was awake on occasion at 1 a.m. I'm also sure that I was never given Thin Mints cookies due to all of the being awake. Yeah, didn't happen. And I'm not sure why it's happening in this scenario, but I can take a guess. (Here's a hint: Responsible parenting does in no way factor into this equation.) Well, the news of her eaten Thin Mints was apparently a bit too much for Ms. Howard to take. This is when Ms. Howard jumped on top of Ms. Wanke and began pummeling her in the face. Man, there is so much to like about this story! Oh, but wait! Did I mention that Ms. Howard is four hundred pounds? I didn't? I apologize. She's four hundred freaking pounds. It's amazing she could jump on top of anything, let alone a woman sleeping in bed. I've seen folks that appeared to be pushing the four hundred pound mark and they needed a Rascal scooter in order to become ambulatory. So I have to say that I am a little impressed that this big ol' gal was so mobile. Now, they apparently fought on the bed for a little bit before Wanke's husband pulled Ms. Howard off of her. Wait. He's in the same bed as her and this chick just walks on in and starts asking about cookies? I don't know about you, but I'm thinking I'd prefer the man that I'm sleeping with to stop things a little bit before they got to this point. I'm thinking just a brief, "What are you doing in here?" followed by a short "Get out!" would be sufficient. But he let it get to the point where he had a four hundred pound woman in his bed on top of his wife. If it weren't for the four hundred pounds, it sounds like most guys' fantasy.Ms. Wanke fled and Ms. Howard took off after her. Again, incredibly mobile for such a behemoth giant woman. She allegedly grabbed a pair of scissors and threatened to kill Ms. Wanke over the now consu[...]

She was raised on a farm, and was the eldest girl of seven children. By five she was singing weekends in her family's band. At age eight, she was struck by an automobile in front of the family home, and her legs suffered multiple fractures. Recuperating for months in a wheelchair, she continued singing to help pay her medical bills. When she was 16, she began performing at a nightclub near Columbia, Missouri, a gig that lasted two years.Evans moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1991 to be a country music artist, where she met fellow musician Craig Schelske. She then left Nashville with Schelske in 1992, when they moved to Oregon. After the couple married in 1993, Evans returned to Nashville in 1995, where Evans began recording demos. Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard was impressed by Evans' demo of his song "Tiger by the Tail". Howard decided to help Evans' music career, which led to a signed contract with the RCA NashvilleIn 1997, Evans released her first album for RCA, Three Chords and the Truth. Critics praised the album for returning to traditional country and included it in many of their year's "top 10" lists. The video for "Three Chords and the Truth" directed by Susan Johnson director was nominated for awards from Billboard Magazine, CMT and the MVPA. The album included a cover version of an older Country song, Patsy Cline's "Imagine That", which originally reached No. 21 for Cline on the Country charts in 1962. None of the three singles made the top 40. It would be another year before Evans gained full popularity. In 1998 Evans released her second album, No Place That Far. Critics slammed her on choosing a more pop-country sound. Her first single, "Cryin' Game", hardly made a ripple on the charts though the music video, which re-teamed Evans with director Susan Johnson, did very well in rotation. However, it was her next single, "No Place That Far", a duet with Vince Gill, that brought Evans massive success, reaching No. 1 on the Country charts, as well reac[...]

She Needs To Have A Job First

2012-03-04T01:47:32.572-08:00

(image) People could learn a lot from the little girl in the video that I'm about to link to because Blogger is being just totally awesome and not letting me post videos right now. She appears to be around 4 or 5 years old and has some definite ideas about the decisions that she is going to be making in her life later on. Her main point is that she will not and is not going to get married until she has a job. And she is adamant about it, too! She doesn't even care if her needing to have a job first makes the man go away. She says, "Fine. I'll just find a different man! This is my life." I'm telling you, I know people that need to listen and learn from this kid. She could give seminars to a select segment of society. How To?

2012-03-04T01:47:32.573-08:00

My nephew left a brand new gallon bottle of clothes detergent on top of the washing machine. Unfortunately he didn't secure the lid and the vibration of the washing machine knocked the detergent bottle off. This is the mess I had to clean up.
(image)

How do you clean up liquid detergent on brick floors? The floor is not a flat surface. We do have a sealer on the brick but all those nooks and crannies?

I thought about it for a minute and then decided to gather up some towels and try to sop as much up as I could. If my floor had been a flat surface, I would have tried a dry sponge mop or squeegee and a dustpan to sort of squeegee up as much as I could but that wouldn't work on an uneven surface like a brick floor. I had to use dry towels because once you add moisture it's going to suds and be harder to get up.

After I used up the towels, I threw them in the laundry sink. I didn't want to just throw that much detergent in my washing machine so I rinsed the towels out as much as I could before tossing them in the washer. Meanwhile I blotted up as much as I could with paper towels. Once I got it as dry as it was going to get, I used my sponge mop and water. I mopped and rinsed, mopped and rinsed, mopped and rinsed. Fortunately my laundry sink is right there. I didn't even have to make a step. So I mopped and rinsed in the sink with clear running water. But, the wet mop made it sudsy.

So I changed my strategy a little. I mixed some vinegar and water and poured it on the floor in little bits. This seemed to really help with the sudsing. Kept it from foaming up. So I continued to pour some vinegar water on the floor and mop it up and kept rinsing the mop out and doing it again.

After I got as much up with a mop as I could, I did my last thing. I pulled out the wet/dry shop vacuum. I made sure the vacuum bag was out and then I poured vinegar water on the floor, used a soft brush to brush it around and then vacuumed it up. I figured this would be sure to get it out of even the nooks and crannies of the brick. I did this for about 2 gallons of water/vinegar.

So it was a little bit of a process, but it worked and my floor is good as new. It just smells a little like a soapy salad in there but that will pass. LOL!

Spring Cleaning Has Started

2012-03-04T01:47:32.573-08:00

The last couple of weeks, the weather has been beautiful here. It's made me feel better and energized me to start Spring Cleaning. But it is only February. I have the dreaded yellow pollen season coming up that usually lasts a month. There is no use doing a complete cleaning when yellow, dusty pollen will coat everything. So I hold off on washing walls, windows, etc. During that pollen season, I won't even open my windows to try and keep as much of that dust out. But there are things that I can do in my Spring Cleaning efforts. Inside closets, cabinets and drawers I can clean. So I got started last week.I have extensive china and crystal that I've collected over the years. I've purchased some and I've inherited some. I have a set for each season of the year. I have a Winter set, Fall set, Christmas set, Spring set and Summer Set. I also have punch bowl, cups and plates, crystal and silver. I have 4 china cabinets, 2 are built in oak cabinets, in our dining room.It took me 3 days to take everything out of the china cabinets and wash them. I ran the dishwasher the whole time and I hand washed the stuff that was too delicate or old for the dishwasher.I polished my silver. As long as it stays in the cabinet, it doesn't tarnish badly. I used to have it on open shelves and I would have to polish the silver every quarter, but since I've put it in a closed cabinet I polish once a year.BeforeAfterMy Spring Cleaning Lists.[...]

Hello, no Aetix yesterday as my connection was down, it's still shaky, troubles should be over next week, meanwhile RhoDeo Roots Toumani is fully present and i hope i'll get by the rest of the week.

(image) Todays Goldy Rhox mystery album was released 40 years ago ( April 1971) and has sold over 7 million units worldwide, making it the bands best selling album. In 2003, the album was ranked number 337 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock, the album came #7 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums"
The first side of the album contains several character sketches, including two of people of questionable repute and two autobiographical tracks . The second side, "My God," contains three tracks that address religion in an introspective, and sometimes irreverent, manner. However, despite the names given to the album's two sides and their related subject matter, Anderson has consistently maintained that it's not a "concept album".

Don't Name Your Kid That!

2012-03-04T01:47:32.574-08:00

I'm very happy for the folks in Egypt that their revolution was successful in getting their dictator to step down. Congratulations! Go out and celebrate, Egyptians! But don't get all carried away and start naming your newborn children wacky names after social networking sites may have played a pivotal role in all of the revolutionizing, OK? Dude that named his daughter Facebook, I'm talking to you.

That's right. According to the Daily Mail, some Egyptian man named his new daughter Facebook. Her full name is Facebook Jamal Ibrahim. Yeah, that's pretty. Um, but seriously now. Facebook? That's not a name! That's a thing! And even if it was going to be a person's name (and it is not), it certainly wouldn't be a little girl's name. That's an asinine boy's name if I've ever heard of one.

But apparently the thinking of the little girl's father (image) was not along the same lines as my own thinking. Shocking, I know. See, "He is said to have called her Facebook because he was so happy with the role played by the site in organising protests in Tahrir Square and other cities throughout Egypt." OK, then. Couldn't he have commemorated the events by naming her Tahrir? That's kind of a cool name, actually. I wouldn't mind being named Tahrir and then being able to tell people about why I was named that. I would absolutely mind being named Facebook and then having everyone look at me funny when they first heard my name. Hey, wait a minute! Why is the father the only one who I am hearing about being the one to name her? Wasn't there a woman attached to the uterus that this child popped out of? Doesn't she have a say in any of this? What's that? Oh. Right. They're not quite like that. Dictator or not. Bummer. Sorry, little Facebook.

But I guess it could have been worse. She could have ended up being Facebook Twitter Yahoo! News Ibrahim.

Battle of King's Mountain, NC

2012-03-04T01:47:32.575-08:00

Battle of King's Mountain, NCThe Patriots (Whigs) were entirely volunteer forces who fought under men that they chose to follow which were John Sevier, William Campbell, Frederick Hambright, Joseph McDowell, Benjamin Cleveland, James Williams, John McKissack, Isaac Shelby, Joseph Winston and Edward Lacey. Major Patrick Ferguson led the Loyalist troops. In this battle, Major Ferguson was the only British regular which meant that Americans were fighting Americans. Unlike most British officers, Ferguson was convinced that Loyalist militia could be trained to be as effective as British regulars.Cornwallis had invaded NC on September 9, 1780 and came into Charlotte, NC on September 26, 1780. Ferguson followed and established a base camp at Gilbert Town and issued a challenge to the Patriot leaders to lay down their arms or he would, "Lay waste to their country with fire and sword." Col. Ferguson's warning was the result of his frustration over the refusal of most of the Overmountain men (east Tennesseans and southwestern Virginians) to take the loyalty oath and to stop providing safe harvens for militiamen from the Carolinas and Georgia. They had eluded him after the August 16th defeat of American General Gates and the American army at the battle of Camden by retreating "overmountain". The message was delivered to Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Tennessee) to Militia Colonel Isaac Shelby who went to Washington County, NC (now Tennessee) to confer with Colonel John Sevier. The tough-talking words only outraged the Appalachian Americans and Shelby and Sevier decided to march quickly over the mountains and surprise Ferguson. They gathered with Colonel William Campbell in Sycamore Shoals, near Elizabethton, TN at Watauga and crossed over the mountains to face Ferguson. They were called the "Over Mountain Men" and were 900-1,000 strong. They included John Crockett, the father of Davy Crockett.A captured deserter and spies told Ferguson about the approaching Patriot force. Ferguson and his troop of 1,100 men retreated toward Cornwallis in Charlotte, NC but stopped at King's Mountain to face the Patriot force. King's Mountain was one of many rocky forested hills in the upper Piedmont near the border between North and South Carolina. It is shaped like a footprint with the highest point at the heel at 60 ft, a narow instep, and a broad rounded toe with a flat plateau at the top that provided a good 'high ground" campsite. Ferguson was confident that his position rendered him secure against any untrained and unorganized force which might attack him. His Provincial (Loyalist, Royalist, Tory) Corps were trained in the use of the bayonet and were commanded by competent leaders.Camping on Kings [...]

Could You Please Keep It Down?

2012-03-04T01:47:32.575-08:00

I don't like it any more than anyone else does when people make noise in a movie theater. What is wrong with those people? Why is it so hard for them to be quiet when they're in a big room filled with a bunch of other people being quiet? I mean, being quiet is pretty easy. You just sit there and don't talk and you've done it! You're quiet! It's the making noise that takes some effort. Granted, not a lot of effort, especially if everyone else is being quiet, but some effort. So, why not just be quiet? And if someone does ask you to be quiet, just do it. Simply stop the offending behavior and watch the movie. Please, whatever you do, do not resolve the issue by shooting and killing the person who was offended. That's really not going to help much.According to our friends across the pond at The Guardian, a couple of folks at a cinema in Latvia had an encounter after one of the patrons was accused of eating his popcorn too loudly. I am not quite sure how that's possible. Popcorn isn't exactly the loudest of all of the concessions offered. Then again, some people are just pure ruffians when it comes to eating. They'd be much better off just snapping on a feed bag. Might even be quieter. Who knows?Apparently, "The assailant, 27, reportedly had a brief argument with the man, aged 43, who was sitting next to him during a screening of Black Swan". Two guys, at the movies, watching Black Swan? Were their wives or girlfriends with them? I'm just saying. If they were each there alone, then maybe it was an unwelcomed advance gone horribly awry. Stranger things have happened. Like what happened next, for instance. It seems that the 27-year old didn't take too kindly to the 43-year old telling him to keep his popcorn chomping down. So when the movie was over, the 27-year old pulled out a "legally registered firearm" and shot the 43-year old dead as can be. After that, he just stood around and waited to be arrested (which he was). I find it amusing that he waited until the end of the movie. It's like he was thinking, "I am going to kill that guy, but first? I need to know what's up with these little ballerinas." Very strange. Not as strange as killing the guy, but strange none the less. Note to self: Don't go to the movies in Latvia.[...]

Hello, well i'm having some odd connection troubles tonight, off /on off / on, hope i can post later hmm. Meanwhile that crazy colonel lives up to his reputation whilst us outsiders don't get that this has become tribal warfare, with one side holding all the guns, they cant lay those down because the other side has decades of grudges that need to be settled. I hope not, but this could become a huge bloodbath, which will show how incapable the UN is, meanwhile NATO is playing hide and seek in Afghanistan.Prioritease... Last week it was Ali Farka Toure, this week it's his fellow music star from Mali Toumani Diabaté , they made a couple of albums together but Toumani carved out his own place in music history, that said i don't think there are many musicians alive that come from a 1000 year long line of artists. A bit of Sundaze on a TuesdayxxxxxMali's Toumani Diabaté has played his kora--the 21-string harp/lute--with Taj Mahal, Peter Gabriel, Spain's flamenco-fusion band Ketama, the 52-piece, Japanese/Malian Symmetric Orchestra, and countless jazz musicians who have sought him out in Bamako where he lives. The select fraternity of West African kora players embrace Toumani as a prodigy--the prince of the kora- Diabaté comes from a long family tradition of kora players including his father Sidiki Diabaté, who recorded the first ever kora album in 1970. His family's oral tradition tells of 71 generations of musicians preceding him in a patrilineal line. His cousin Sona Maya Jobarteh is a premiere female diaspora kora player. He developed a style of playing that, while being strongly rooted in the Malian tradition, is also open to a wide range of other influences, such as jazz and flamenco. He has subsequently sought out other musicians from around the world who are willing to experiment with him, even performing a concert in Amsterdam with a classical harpist. His 1989 debut, Kaira, made history as the first-ever solo kora album to be released. Stark, haunting, and full of breathtaking improvisational flourishes, it made him a star in his homeland and an in-demand performer internationally. In the same year, Songhai, a highly acclaimed collaboration between Diabaté, the Spanish flamenco group Ketama, and British jazz-folk bassist Danny Thompson, also released their acclaimed debut. Over the next six years, Diabaté performed at festivals and concerts all over the globe, doing much to broaden the appeal of the music of Mali, in general, and the kora, in particular. In 1995, a second Songhai album was released, as well as Djelika, on which he led a group of musicians featuring Kélétigui Diabaté (a veter[...]

Oops, forgot to post it last night

Hello, well as i mentioned yesterday that todays phone playback AAC a format pushed thru by Apple who rejected the opensource (free) Ogg format and decided to develop their own heavily patented format, they just love a closed shop policy, wonder where that cancer came from Steve ? Fear ! Any way AAC sucked big time and has only recently caught up with MP3, meanwhile the itunes shop has forced other tech companies to buy in to (literally) the AAC format, hopefully Android will give us OGG playback because at 320 it's quality is still way ahead of that of AAC or MP3 ! People are smarter than companies. and computers as our story tells us, however that doesn't mean we always make the best choices..alas. As for me i will continue with OGG .

The Setting

Some years before the story opens, the huge Earth starship Challenger, on a mission to find Earth-like planets for colonization, encountered a meteoroid shower that killed all of the adult crew and seriously damaged the ship. The only human survivors were four babies - two boys, Telson and Darv, and two girls, Sharna and Astra. The four have been raised from childhood by androids and tutored by two disembodied voices called Angel One and Angel Two.

Just Say No

2012-03-04T01:47:32.576-08:00

I'm not necessarily against scams. The thing about most scams is that it's fairly obvious they're scams. It's a wonder (to me, anyway) that they ever work in the first place. Therefore, as a proponent of "A fool and his money are soon parted", I have a hard time being overly sympathetic toward people who get taken to the cleaners by people who aren't even cleaners. You need to pay attention. If it's too good be true, it probably freaking is! Thus, don't do it! And I know that some softhead out there is going to be thinking "What about the elderly?" The elderly need to pay attention to! I understand that they're all nice and want to help and always have those weird peppermint candies in their purse that they're always trying to give away, but that's no reason to try to take advantage of them. They need to THINK. (And this is coming from someone (me) with an elderly mother. Lemme tell you, that old broad isn't going to help anyone with anything. And that could not make me happier. I don't know if it's because she doesn't want to get scammed or just because she's mean, but I really don't care. It's an effective strategy against evil-doers.) But not everyone has any sort of built in B.S. beacon in their head. Let's look at a story from the Orlando Sentinel. Yes, it should come as no surprise that this goes on in Florida, but it can (and does) happen anywhere. Here's the scam: Someone who is over 60 years old and Hispanic is approached by two Spanish speaking people. The two people tell the person that they are in possession of a winning lottery ticket. How exciting! To make it even more exciting, it is, of course, a multi-million dollar lottery ticket! Oh, but then comes the sad news. The sad news is that the lucky couple are in this country illegally. See? Sad! But the person (about to be known as "The one with no more money") can help make this situation not so sad by cashing the ticket for the Spanish speaking foreigners. Now, to me, I can see that situation occurring. The part about where a couple of illegals buy a lottery ticket and win the friggin' thing. I can also see them needing someone else to cash the ticket for them. Both of those things make perfect sense to me. Everything else, however, does not. They don't have any friends who are legal? What about the nice lady at the welfare office who I'm sure helps them get benefits? She couldn't do it? (These are rhetorical questions because, as you know, the whole situation is fake. Please don't email me with answers to these questions. I un[...]

How Not To Move A Mattress

2012-03-04T01:47:32.578-08:00

Today, we have a case of an event gone awry. But not just any event. It's an event which you wonder why it ever took place to begin with. It's an event which more than one person needed to concur that it was a good idea. It's an event in which both of those things seem completely impossible. They're definitely hard to explain.Take the case of a one Timothy Lee Walker, 48-years old (and old enough to know better) and a one 42-year old Stella Thomas (also old enough to know better). According to MSNBC, one or both of these dimwits bought a mattress and were taking it home themselves. Naturally, they had neither the vehicle, nor the equipment with which to transport a mattress from one place to another. (Why is it that nine times out of ten, if someone is moving a mattress, they do not have a truck? I've never understood that. It's like some weird unwritten law of nature that if you don't have a truck, you're going to have to move your mattress. It's practically guaranteed.)Now, most people, when transporting a large object that they have to put on top of their vehicle, tend to use some sort of tethering utilities to secure said object to said vehicle. Those can range anywhere from rope and twine to nylon cords and bungee cords. And that's just to name a few. You know what is noticeably absent from my list? That's right. The human body. See, Mr. Walker decided that a good idea for keeping the mattress on top of the vehicle was for him to lie down on top of the 1996 Ford Explorer while Ms. Thomas drove the moron and the mattress to their destination. You want to guess how that turned out? Poorly, that is correct. Surprisingly, Mr. Walker "...fell from the vehicle when...Stella Thomas, 42, rounded a curve, causing the mattresses to slide off the roof". I don't know how they thought that was ever going to work. Mr. Walker's condition was such that he "...was taken by helicopter to a hospital". At the writing of the scant article (which is probably about as extensive as Mr. Walker's problem solving skills) "His latest medical condition wasn't known". Well, while his latest medical condition wasn't known, I'm guessing that his latest mental condition could probably be guessed at with a great degree of accuracy. What a maroon. I wonder how she ended up getting the mattress home after he went to the hospital? [...]

Sundaze 1008

2012-03-04T01:47:32.578-08:00

Hello, i wondered what to post because i didn't want to distract you all from all that great Cabaret Voltaire music i posted these last days. But then, this is how it goes, everything in our existance is fleeting, holding on just leads to mental disease. Have to mention here my first big disappointment with my new phone, those silly Koreans put in 4! different videoformats, but just 2 for music aac appleshit and the ancient mp3 format. I had hoped that, as so many mp3 players do that don't mention but still play the ogg format,it would play ogg.. alas no such luck..duh Well to be honest i do have some 40 gig of mp3's but having to encode good music in an inferior format hmm, i did grab the latest Radiohead in mp3 20 earlier although i already scored it in flac last night--check the link in comments--such trifling problems hmm, back to Sundaze and there's 2 sides of the tripping kind here today space-gaze-guitar and the XTC floaters who actually put some serious thought into what they were doing..just read the liner notes..xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxAll of the music on this album was actually written by three people under different aliases: Kim Casone, Don Falcone and Paul Neyrinck. We trace our deepest reactions to the ambient sound around us through non-invasive imaging. Highlighting the blood, so it can be seen in the brain at the moment of listening, we can study the patterns that emerge over time. Patterns formed during a single listening experience (e.g., a song) can be considered a "map" to understanding our aural sensors. By placing various maps side by side, we discover similar maps, similar reactions. This repetition may suggest a plural intelligence within each of us, or the revelation of past lives, or astrological potentials, or simply a like moment in time of which we are an integral part.In this spirit exists Spice Barons, Patternclear, Satellite IV, etc., combining natural and electronic sounds so that they make a perfect sense. All that we are emanates from the same seed. But how the flower is picked and assimilated remains random. In listening to the ambience that surrounds us, there is always the potential for individualized impressions which are constantly redefining the ambience. This occurs when an aural composition moves further and further from the maps formed by its initial listener[...]

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy & History - Week #8 - Technology

2012-03-04T01:47:32.578-08:00

52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy History by Amy Coffin is a series of weekly blogging prompts (one for each week of 2011) that invite genealogists and others to record memories and insights about their own lives for future descendants. From Geneabloggers.52 Weeks of Personal Genealogy History - Week #8 - Technology. What are some of the technological advances that happened during your childhood? What types of technology to you enjoy using today, and which do you avoid?A lot has happened in my lifetime. I went from a home with a black and white TV with 3 channels to flatscreened color TV's in every room with 200 channels. I've seen the old black telephone with a party line and the first cell phone that was the size and weight of a car battery to super slim cellphones that can surf the Internet at the same time you talk on the phone! I've used paper spreadsheets on a desk with a calculator and now computerized spreadsheets that can be shared online. I went from no computers to computerized everything! In 1986 I graduated from Spartanburg Technical College with an Associate's Degree in Accounting and Computer Operations. We had one room with personal computers and I remember only having one class in that room. The rest of the computer classes were talking about simple DOS programming, how to change tapes (on computers that filled an entire room), how to use punch cards, etc.My mother bought a "word processor." The machine could only do word processing and the software program was on a floppy disk in a floppy disc drive and the data was saved on another floppy disk in a 2nd floppy disk drive. There were no hard drives. At work, my first computer was an IBM like this one:This did not have a hard drive but 2 5 1/4 floppy drives. It was neat that I was able to find these photos of old computers on the Internet.Soon I got a modification to my office computer. They removed one of the floppy drives and added a 10 Megabyte hard drive! I thought this was so coo at the timel! It was about this time Stan and I bought our first personal computer for home. It had a 25 Mb hard drive and a 5 1/4 floppy drive. It had a primitive color monitor. It cost us about $2,500! It looked something like this:Every couple of years I bought a new computer and upgraded to the newest and latest. Today I have 2[...]

Coming To A Relationship Status Near You

2012-03-04T01:47:32.579-08:00

You politically correct types are going to be the end of me. I swear. I know you're going win in the end, but I'm going to try and fight it as long as I can. And while I've got a lot of fight left in me, this sort of stuff really tires my ass out. According to a Huffington Post article, Facebook is branching out and giving you more, yes, more choices for how to describe whatever your relationship status might currently be! How enlightened of them! Apparently, "Facebook has added two new relationship status options users can include in their online profiles: "in a civil union" and "in a domestic partnership." OK. So, why does this bother me? Well, you know I'm going to tell you, so what say you just calm down a minute there, Sparky? (Sorry. I'm a little cranky. Stuff like this just gives me a full head of steam.) Before all of the enlightening, the choices were "limited" to: Single, In a relationship, Engaged, Married, It's complicated, In an open relationship, Widowed, Separated, and Divorced. OK. That's all fine and good. Are you seeing my problem with including "in a civil union" and in a domestic partnership", yet? The answer is: It seems unnecessary to me.And it's not just the new ones that I have a problem with. How is "In an open relationship" any different from "It's complicated"? What the what is "It's complicated" supposed to mean anyway? Is it like, "I'm going to break up with him, but I'm waiting until after my birthday to see what he gets me"? Or is it "I haven't found anyone else to sleep with without emotional attachment, so I'm waiting for that first"? Or is it simply "I'm cheating on him and he doesn't know it yet"? (Did you like how in that example I made the woman the cheater instead of the man? See? I can be progressive, too!)But back to the new options. Isn't "In a relationship" good enough? You'd think (back when the whole gay marriage debate was going on in California) that the civil union and the domestic partnership options would have been frowned upon by gay marriage proponents. Good Lord, that's all we heard about was how nothing less than a marriage would do! I mean, I guess if folks who it applies to are OK with it and everything, then I suppose it's fine. Maybe I'm just irritated that I never know what's fine and what's not [...]

Sorting Saturday - Making a Scrapbooking Area

2012-03-04T01:47:32.579-08:00

Sorting Saturday is a daily blogging prompt at Geneabloggers.com used by many genealogy bloggers to help them post content on their sites. Any tips on how to go about sorting through a closet or box of stuff, what to do with what you find, organizing, supplies and tools you might need, etc.I do scrapbooking which goes hand-in-hand with my other passion, genealogy. I used to do all paper scrapbooking but now I've gone digital. If you do digital and paper on the same page layout, it's called hybrid scrapbooking. I now have a wide format printer that prints 12 x 12 scrapbook pages but you can also have them printed by companies online like Shutterfly.com. Our niece, Jenny, came up with funny things to the tune of Twelves Days of Christmas about little Brett. I had to scrap it. I did a hybrid page. I printed part of it as 8 x 8 on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and then put it on a 12 x 12 scrapbook paper and added embellishments around it.Why did I change to digital? Because all my supplies are in the computer on a hard drive and I can do away with all the supplies and equipment I used to use. That opened up a lot of space in my study. But some people love handling the paper and will not go digital. For them......I searched the Internet for scrapbooking rooms. Scrapbook rooms have to be highly organized to be effective. There are just so many papers, embellishments, stickers, equipment, etc to keep up with. Some women only have little scrapbook areas like using a closet, their dining room table, or a corner. But serious scrappers have a dedicated room, or scrapbook studio. If you aren't organized then you forget what you have and duplicate. This is a waste of money. Some people get really too many supplies and equipment. Their inventory is too heavy. They end up with every new doodad and stuff gets shifted to the bottom or is no longer in fashion so it's a waste. If you have a local scrapbook store, let it be your warehouse. You don't have to keep 50 sheets of red cardstock on hand. But, if you don't have a scrapbook store near you, then you really might need to keep a good inventory. Also if you have scrapbook parties at your house or you are in the scrapbooking business, then you might need all that stuff. But try to keep a healthy balance...[...]

RhoDeo 1107 Beats

2012-03-04T01:47:32.579-08:00

Hello, a rare RhoDeo Beats post today, and rare is the operative word here as the music today lacked decent distribution, specially on their hometurf. The UK labels and music press alike shunned Cabaret Voltaire, dare i say most undeservdly so. I would go as far as to say that it was sheer incompetence and groupthink that let a proven force like Cabaret Voltaire fall thru the cracks. Ultimately it meant the end for CV , the Conversation a final attempt, but the UK remained mute. Luckily in the US and in Belgium there was at least interest enough to release and distribute their final 3 albums, even though there was a very limited marketing push. That goes to myself aswell, even though being in the socalled scene, i just relativly recently became aware of these albums when i came across them at a sale of a recordshop that went out of business. I picked up a few dozen titels, among them all that was left in their Cab Voltaire section. It took me another couple of months to get around to listening to them, and i have to say i was amazed. Even almost 2 decades later the music was fresh enough to enjoy and frankly i don't understand why they were so badly shunned there wasn't that much better around at that time. I can only assume CV were seen as a threat to all the new acts that were sprouting and needed the loving attention of the music press high on xtc, who needs dark overtones. Well these days we know better...3 albums, 4 hours and 41 min , and i promise you won't be bored.xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxx xxxxxRe-emerging with a much more original sound after their 1990 house album, Kirk and Mallinder for the most part rely on abstract electro-inspired ambient-techno with extended voice-over samples for Plasticity. It certainly wasn't the first time CV had remade themselves without losing elements of their past work (even re-sampling a passage originally recorded over ten years earlier on "Soul Vine [70 Billion People]"), and Plasticity was an excellent reworking of the house blueprint into the growing fringe of techno not necessarily produced for the dancefloor. The tribal flourishes of "Deep Time" and the obvious signal track "Inside the Electronic Revolution" showcase the duo as continuing visionaries.Cabar[...]

You Never Know When...

2012-03-04T01:47:32.579-08:00

We're friends, right? You...me....friendly, yes? Yes. I think we are. And as a friend, I am going to do you a favor. Well, it's not a favor now so much as it would have been about 60 years ago. So if you could pretend it is somewhere around 1950 that I'm helping you out with this, that would really be beneficial. Apparently, at one point, it was seen as useful to make a charming, short, black and white film for educational purposes and show them to students in class. PSAs, or Public Service Announcements, is what they were known as. And they do just that. They provide a public service which is announced via the film. And I am here to share one of these with you. Feeling lucky? You should. Because I'm going to let you in on some very important information to which you would be wise to heed. See, you may not have been aware of it up until now, but you never know when the homosexual is about. Wait. What? Correct. See, the the PSA below warns about the dangers of the homosexual. We "learn" vital information about the homosexual. And if you thought that it was just a stereotype that the homosexual had a pervy pencil-thin moustache, was balding and wore weird sunglasses, well, you'd be wrong! According to this depiction, that is exactly what the homosexual looks like! Watch and learn, folks! title="YouTube video player" width="325" height="274" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/v3S24ofEQj4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>[...]

Un-Beliebable

2012-03-04T01:47:32.581-08:00

Is there any way that we could get away from asking questions of certain people who have no idea what they're talking about and have no business answering certain questions that they're asked? And by "certain people" I mean celebretards and Justin Bieber. It was all I could do not to write about a press release that came out about a week ago, which started out: "REAL HOUSEWIVES STAR DANIELLE STAUB GIVES ADVICE TO EGYPT'S MUBARAK." Really? Who was asking? And who cared? And which of those two was the most dense intellectually? It had to have been a toss up. An excerpt: "Staub, who notoriously walked away from the show, was asked whether it was time for Mubarak to walk away as well...'If he feels in his heart that it's really time then, yeah, it is time," Staub stated." Kill me now. Don't delay! I'm standing by! But wait, before you do that? Could you tell me what's wrong with her face? But I'm having a hard time not commenting on the Justin Bieber article in Rolling Stone. Again, why someone is asking these questions of ANY sixteen year old is beyond me, but asking them of Justin Bieber is simply stupefying. For instance, Bieber (who may or may not be a 30-year old lesbian impersonating a teenage boy) was apparently asked if he had any plans to become an American citizen. Thank God, he does not. He seems to be very fond of his homeland, America's Hat. But his reasons are...annoying at best. He 'jokes', "You guys are evil...Canada's the best country in the world...We go to the doctor and we don't need to worry about paying him, but here, your whole life, you're broke because of medical bills. My bodyguard's baby was premature, and now he has to pay for it. In Canada, if your baby's premature, he stays in the hospital as long as he needs to, and then you go home."Are you kidding me?! His bodyguard has to PAY For his OWN BABY?!?! It's madness!! Hey, Bieber. He works for you, you little twit! If you're so big on your socialist system, what say, since you have WAY more money than your peon of a bodyguard, YOU pay for it[...]

One of these days, I swear, C and I are going to experience Carnaval (or Carnival) in Dominican Republic, Brazil, Trinidad, Panama, France, somewhere!  Or even Mardi Gras (well, I've been to my native city's version of Mardi Gras, which is tiny but a lot of fun). Here are some videos from the Dominican Republic's Carnavals, which are underway. Talk about a cure for the winter doldrums (though the thaw has begun and the mountains of snow are slowly receding, but still...).Via Monaga blogCarnival in La Vega, Dominican Republic allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/gA18zW0VddQ" title="YouTube video player" width="640">Carnaval in Santiago de las Cabelleros, DR allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8lzjKUso_mM" title="YouTube video player" width="480">More Dominican Carnaval videosCarnaval in Santo Domingo Este allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ak0yZkVFiZo" title="YouTube video player" width="480">Carnaval in Santiago, DR (note the pack of Michael Jacksons!) allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/tad5-7yWoTM" title="YouTube video player" width="480">Musician Johnny Ventura singing, Carnaval in La Vega title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lvONyxQlCNM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>Carnaval in La Vega title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4z812KYw2ok" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>Carnaval in La Vega's Zona 2 (Hood) allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/r0lNkV8n1MU" title="YouTube video player" width="480">[...]

RhoDeo 1107 Goldy Rhox 14

2012-03-04T01:47:32.582-08:00

Hello, well i finally got my new mobile an LG T300 now i got to find the time to master it..hmm i'm not into sms much nor facebook or twitter to me this is a phone integrated with a music player and the rest well when i find the time or need for it. Well for my somewhat younger visitors i'm sure their parents have some (strong) memories from todays Goldy Rhox..Now i'm not as naive to post this kinda music for all to see and have deleted, these will be a black box posts, i'm sorry for those on limited bandwidth but for most of you a gamble will get you a quality rip don't like it, deleting is just 2 clicks...That said i will try to accomodate somewhat and produce some cryptic info on the artist and or album.Todays mystery album was released 34 years ago it went on to sell 40 million copies worldwide. The band was America's answer to ABBA..in a way.. although the involved couples were already splitting here after their previous album had seen some serious succes. Listening to the album the relational stress isn't really there, rumours probably intensified them. Little did they know that 15 years later a relative upstart would thwart NWO's timeschedule by beating that devious man for the presedency and all on a campaign track that reminded the audience that "yesterday's gone and don't you stop thinking about the future it will be here sooner then you think" lalala oh well there was one track and hit that said " get lost" in a polite way..i wonder if divorce rates soared in the aftermath of that huge hit.Goldy Rhox 14 91mb[...]

Scottish Deerhound

2012-03-04T01:47:32.582-08:00

The Scottish Deerhound is one of the Sight or Gaze Hound breeds. It was also known as the Scotch Greyhound, Rough Greyhound and Highland Deerhound. The Scottish Deerhound resembles a rough-coated Greyhound. It is however, larger in size and bone. Height of males from 30 to 32 inches or more, weight 85 to 110 pounds; height of females from 28 inches upwards, weight from 75 to 95 pounds. It is one of the tallest sighthounds. A Scottish Deerhound comes with a harsh 3-4 inch long coat and mane, somewhat softer beard and mustache, and softer hair on breast and belly. It has small, dark "rose" ears which are soft and folded back against the head unless held semi-erect in excitement. The modern Scottish Deerhound comes in shade of blue/gray but, historically, they came in fawn red, brindle, yellow. White chest and toes are allowed. The skull is long and tapering. The harsh, wiry coat  needs extensive grooming. Some trimming and stripping is required, but little skill is needed. This breed is an average shedder. The Scottish Deerhound is extremely friendly and a gentle giant. They are polite and affectionate. Loving, friendly and excellent with children. Very courageous and dignified, devoted and loyal, but they are not watch or guard dogs, for they just love everyone. As with all sighthounds, they are prey driven. So you must be careful in introducing the Deerhound to any smaller dogs or cats in the household. They are a very docile breed. They particularly love laying around and sleeping. But they do need a large fenced area to exercise in. They particularly need exercise when young in order to develop properly. They need another Deerhound to interact with because there are not many dogs big enough to romp and play safely with. They need to be kept on a leash or in a safe area when out, as do all gazehounds. A gazehound may see something they think is "prey" and dash off[...]

Lil World Record

2012-03-04T01:47:32.582-08:00

For about a week, the delicious cookie which brings black and white together, the beloved Oreo, has been promoting a stunt on their Facebook page. See, Oreo wants to set a world record for the most Facebook likes in 24 hours. That's a noble gesture. Not as noble perhaps as, say, making those Oreos dipped in white chocolate available all year long, but noble in its own special way.The world record attempt was supposed to start yesterday. And it got off to a rousing start! After just six hours, they had 61,595 Likes. That's something. I don't know what exactly, but definitely something. But wait! There's more! Every story needs an antagonist and this tale of liking Oreos is no exception. It's a rather unexpected antagonist, however. Enter Lil Wayne. That's right. Lil Wayne. Now, this Wayne fellow, just how lil is he? I mean, are we talking like could fit in the palm of my hand or just fairly short statured? Whichever it is, he appears to be some sort of a gangster thug criminal convicted felon rapper. He apparently also goes by Weezy, which I thought was reserved strictly for George Jefferson's wife, but perhaps I was mistaken. I don't recall Small Wayne being married to George Jefferson, nor do I recall Mr. Jefferson swinging that way. He had Lionel, didn't he? Wow, I certainly do digress at times. Where was I? Oh, right! Diminuitive Wayne. Tiny Wayne decided that setting a world record and having to do absolutely nothing to get said world record sounded like a good idea. Thus, he posted the following on his Facebook page: "everyone, please "Like" this post. I'm trying to break the Guinness World Record for most "Likes" on a post in 24 hours. Let's get it!!!" And what do you think happened? That's right. Plenty of people who favor Miniature Wayne and thought that it would actually mean something to him if they individually "Liked" his post. And thus, [...]

Hello, hmm todays artists kinda lived up to their name in the sense that it was derived from a dada club. Now most likely you haven't got a clue what Dada entails..sounds kinda sweet doesnt it, well..it ain't . The beginnings of Dada correspond to the outbreak of World War I, the Dada movement primarily involved visual arts, literature—poetry, art manifestoes, art theory—theatre, and graphic design, and concentrated its anti-war politics through a rejection of the prevailing standards in art through anti-art cultural works. Its purpose was to ridicule what its participants considered to be the meaninglessness of the modern world. In addition to being anti-war, dada was also anti-bourgeois and anarchist in nature. Dada is the groundwork to abstract art and sound poetry, a starting point for performance art, a prelude to postmodernism, an influence on pop art, a celebration of antiart. Dada activities included public gatherings, demonstrations, and publication of art/literary journals; passionate coverage of art, politics, and culture were topics often discussed in a variety of media.... Anyway todays band has gone thru some morphing and selden stayed long under contract with a record label, admittedly at times they even found it hard to get a deal in the UK, when that country was under the spell of a possibly even bigger Dada act, The KLF, fortunately in Belgium and The US they remained appreciated, and thanks to that coming RhoDeo Beats there's more Cabaret Voltaire to be had.xxxxx Though they're one of the most important groups in the history of industrial and electronic music, Cabaret Voltaire are sometimes forgotten in the style's timeline -- the fact is that CV rarely stayed in one place for long, instead moving quickly from free-form experimentalism through arty white-boy funk and on to house music in the late '80s[...]

Sight Hounds

2012-03-04T01:47:32.583-08:00

A hound is a type of dog that assists hunters by tracking or chasing the animal being hunted. They are not the type called a "gun dog". Gun dogs (also gundogs or bird dogs) are a type of dog developed to assist hunters in finding and retrieving game. Gun dogs are divided into three primary types: Retrievers, flushers, and pointers. Some kennel clubs define a Gundog Group for gundogs, while other kennel clubs include them in the Sporting Group. One of the oldest meanings for the word sport, in English, is hunting as an entertainment for members of the nobility and elite classes. To assist in the hunting of birds and small game, various sporting types of dogs were developed, which became the ancestors of today's pointer, retriever, setter, and spaniel purebred breeds. Not all kennel clubs include the same breeds in the Sporting Group, and some kennel clubs do not use the Sporting Group classification. But, back to the Hound group. Their are basically 3 types of Hound:  Sight hounds, Scent Hounds and Site/Scent Hounds. This post is about gazehounds. The SightHounds are also known as Gaze Hounds. They hunt by sight and speed. Although, as all dogs, they add some scent and sound to their hunt. But they follow the prey with their sight. These dogs are very fast and will catch and kill game on their own. GazeHounds are bred to keep the prey in sight and pursue it, overpowering it by their speed and agility. There are characteristics that the breed has in order to enable it to do it's job. First it must have keen eyesight so it can detect motion. They have long necks which assists them in sighting their quarry. These long necks do better with a Martingale collar so that there isn't too much pulling on those sensitive necks causing injury to the trac[...]

Doggone Weird

2012-03-04T01:47:32.584-08:00

Look, we all know that there is an awfully lot of weird stuff on the Internets. I mean, really weird stuff. There's cool stuff, too, but it's the weird stuff that really props up the Internets. Well, that and porn. Of course. But even a lot of the porn is pretty weird, too. I guess I don't have to tell you that. Where was I? Oh, yes. The weirdness. Even though there are a lot of really weird things on the Internets, I have to say that I have not encountered the type of weirdness depicted in the video below. That is, until today. Today I encountered it and I still don't know what to do with it. It's a woman and she's showing viewers how to exercise. It's unclear as to which viewers she is trying to reach, as she is also exercising with giant poodles. Oh, did I mention that she herself looks like a giant poodle? Yep. She does. And she looks like a giant poodle right down to her poofy arms and her poofy legs. Seriously, I have no idea what in the hell this is other than so bizarre I'm having trouble putting words to it. I'm open to suggestions. The video is below. It's probably the weirdest thing you'll see all day. You're welcome. I think. (Oh, and PS. I have no idea what that's a picture of. I simply Googled "weird" and that was one of the images that came up. And it is, unquestionably, weird. So I went with it.) title="YouTube video player" width="325" height="274" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7Wu4KuEc3-4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>[...]

Hello, i hope you got to enjoy a Valentine today . Meanwhile I just read that global data storage is calculated at 295 exabytes divided by 7 billion people that works out as 42 gig.per capita, not that much (considering i'm good for roughly 6 terabyte) anyway as of March 2010 global Internet traffic is estimated at 21 exabytes per month. Which would mean all our data are pumped through the internet once a year, again not that shocking i would think. Our total storage capacity is the same as an adult human’s DNA... nature is still streets ahead of us. Here's some more perspective, the 6.4*10^18 instructions per second that human kind can carry out on its general-purpose computers in 2007 are in the same ballpark area as the maximum number of nerve impulses executed by one human brain per second. Then again we are just at the dawn of the digital age that started in 2002 when digital overtook analogue. What about the music today, well he's been here before the desert blues king, Ali Farka Toure he died 5 years ago but his music lives on and thanks to our digital age millions can enjoy his skills, compared to the hundreds he shared with at the beginning of his career. It don't matter to the artist as long as he's respected...xxxxxAli Farka Toure was born in 1939 on the banks of the Niger River in northwestern Malian region of Tombouctou. He was the tenth son of his mother but the only one to survive past infancy. His nickname, “Farka”, chosen by his parents, means “donkey” - an animal admired for its tenacity and stubbornness. As the first African bluesman to achieve widespread popularity on his home continent, Touré was often known as “the African John Lee Hooker”. Musically, the m[...]

Who Wore What To The Grammys

2012-03-04T01:47:32.586-08:00

Grammy time! Obligatory post about fashion time! Comments from people who take this sort of thing way too seriously calling me an idiot time! Let's begin! First things first. For quite a while now, Aretha Franklin has looked like she has eaten most of the folks who were up for Grammys. To say that she has been large is an understatement. But thanks to some undisclosed surgery for some undisclosed ailment (which had previously been disclosed as pancreatic cancer, but was then retracted and changed to undisclosed) she has lost a considerable amount of disclosed weight. While she didn't attend the actual Grammy ceremonies, she did appear on video looking much, much better. Behold! See what an improvement that is from her Big Bird impersonation from a few years back?See? Much better. And I hope that she keeps on getting better. No one should go through life being compared to a giant, flightless, avian Muppet. No one. Moving on, John Mayer made a douche-tastic appearance. He kind of looks like he's trying to be one of the Three Musketeers. I don't know which one. Maybe Balthasar. No, wait. He was a Wise Man. Never mind. Maybe he just wants to be Johnny Depp. Either way, it's not working. He's a tool. Funny how he looks like a d-bag when donning the white jacket look, but when Justin Bieber tries it on, he (or she) looks like a waiter or a bartender. Check, please! (Justin needs to take a good, long look at Seth Rogen, as in about 15 years, that's going to be him.)Nice sparkly silver pants there, Ricky. What's[...]

Hello, will Valentine's day live up to it's reputation , or is it just a choclate tricker treat, occasionaly enlightened by a nice bunch of dead flowers, likely flown over from Africa....save the planet don't buy anymore flowers that aren't grown locally. Or send a nice digital card, btw secret admirors can send me one at Firstborn@mail.nu one of my unused mailaddresses (wink). Nuf said about love...our Challenger crew have reached the end of the line, not sure if they heard of Buddah because it becomes clear that reaching a goal isn't as fulfilling as the paths taken...The Setting Some years before the story opens, the huge Earth starship Challenger, on a mission to find Earth-like planets for colonization, encountered a meteoroid shower that killed all of the adult crew and seriously damaged the ship. The only human survivors were four babies - two boys, Telson and Darv, and two girls, Sharna and Astra. The four have been raised from childhood by androids and tutored by two disembodied voices called Angel One and Angel Two.At the end of Earthsearch, the crew of the starship Challenger settled on the Paradise planet, having never seen their original home planet that they called Earth. They left the Challenger's control computers, Angel One and Angel Two, in charge of the ship to continue the search for Earth. Four years later, the crew have settled into their life on Paradise, despite many hardships they are suffering. Then suddenly, one of their children is killed by a 'monst[...]

In Memory of Mr. Omer L. Baumgartner

2012-03-04T01:47:32.586-08:00

I'm going to tell you this right now: I have never met Mr. Omer L. Baumgartner. I had never even heard of Mr. Baumgartner until today. Unfortunately, it took his death in order for me to read about what can only be described as an awesome and diverse individual. His obituary stood out to me for many reasons. Some of the key phrases being:Mr. Baumgartner had lived a long and passionate life dedicated to rambunctious performances and dairy products. (I like that his life was "dedicated" to said rambunctious performances. I've always said, find your niche in life and go with it. Clearly, Mr. Baumgartner heeded my philosophy.) He was wildly popular with the troops for his mess hours bongo drum performances accompanied by dancing girls. (You don't see many bongo drum performances these days. It really is becoming a lost art.) Baumgartner disliked vegetables his whole life. (That's my kinda man right there!) His last meal was ice cream. (Yep. My kinda man.) His entire obituary is below. I lifted it with neither permission, nor malice, from something called the Register-Mail. I really wish I had known this guy in real life. His family sure was lucky to have him around for 90 years. He seems to be what life is supposed to be all about. I need to start meeting folks like this before they've kicked it. I think it would really help liven things up around here.AMES, Iowa - Noted Midwestern raconteur Omer L. Baumgartner passed away at this home in Ames, Iowa o[...]

Decorating In Our House

2012-03-04T01:47:32.587-08:00

When you think about decorating your home, what is most important to you? You might want to set your priorities before you begin. My priorities are:1) Clean and easy to clean2) Functional3) Pleasing to my eye4) Decorated to magazine perfectionFor me, my Number 1 priority is a room must be clean and easy to clean. You can honestly get by with any style as long as it's clean but the most beautifully and expensively decorated room will look terrible if it's dirty. My 2nd priority is that it function the way we need it to function. For instance, a kitchen. My husband and I cook a lot. It's a very heavily used room. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen. So I needed a kitchen that would have enough cabinets for all our cooking equipment and pantry supplies and a kitchen that was big enough to have comfortable seating. We have a TV in our kitchen and we almost always eat in the kitchen either at the cafe table or in the easy chairs. So we figured out our habits, likes and dislikes and what we needed for the kitchen to function for us. The people that owned the house before us must have never used the kitchen. They probably ate out a lot because the cabinetry is still in perfect condition even though it was installed in 1984! The oven didn't look like it had ever even been turned on. (Although we replaced all the appliances when we bought the house to make sure we had the most energy efficient.) So, for them, the function of the ro[...]

"Our Addressability": Claudia Rankine's Intervention @ AWP

2012-03-04T01:47:32.587-08:00

One event that continues to reverberate now that the 2011 AWP Conference has ended is author and critic Claudia Rankine's "performance of sorts," as she called it, or intervention, as I and others have chosen to call it, concerning Tony Hoagland's racist poem "Change," at the Academy of American Poets' reading (with Charles Wright) on Thursday, January 5, 2011. I was unable to attend, but almost immediately afterward I read Tisa Bryant's short but moving report on it. Several days later, Rankine posted her remarks on her website, and so I will link to them here, and then post Tisa's report. Let me begin by saying I am a huge fan of Rankine's work, but have never had the opportunity to meet her. I hope to someday soon. I also should add that before this I had never read Hoagland's poem, and in general know little about his work, though I have seen his book of essays.Rankine's powerful, cogent remarks and intervention (click on AWP).  The final two paragraphs:Let me just say, Claudia Rankine, thank you.Tisa's original report of the event, which originally appeared on Facebook. I won't excerpt it, since it ought to be read in full, and has been reposted, so I think it's okay to post it here. (I have not included Hoagland's poem, which you can reach via the link above.) Tisa, thank you.Claudia Rankine at AWP: Afterthoughts on an Emotional Experienceby Tisa Bryant on Sunday, February 6, 2011 at 9[...]
