Announcing Michael Beharie - This One Breath C24

Very excited to announce the next W+D tape This One Breath from guitar-and-beats master Michael Beharie. Here's what Fader has to say in their preview stream of the release:
As a solo producer and guitarist, he’s also done a bunch of behind-the-scenes tinkering for some of our favorite artists in town…If you didn’t catch Reach, his recent debut album for Shinkoyo, then this 23-minute, grid-defying and globe-trotting beat epic will probably prick up your ears big time.
Check out a stream, below, and then pre-order the tape here!

Out Now! Patrick Higgins + Mivos - SQ2/Glacia

The Patrick Higgins / Mivos Quartet CD/2xLP is now available for order!

Kev Nickells at did a nice in-depth write-up of this release, which is well worth your time to read, but for the sake of brevity, here's a summation:
Long and the short is that it’s a seriously well delivered set of ideas, with a lot more emphasis on taste applied to the given thematic material, rather than being programmatic or systematic about breaking established form with juxtapositions. In which sense, much more ‘now’ than the period historically associated with the ‘avant-garde’.

Mivos Quartet // Patrick Higgins: String Quartet No. 2 + Glacia CD/LP

From the same man who brought you the quadraphonic best-of-2012 STEREO comes this very exciting collaboration with the newly-formed ExCathedra Records: Mivos Quartet // Patrick Higgins: String Quartet No. 2 + Glacia, to be released on LP/CD on November 11, 2013. Part one of this beautiful release features Mivos Quartet playing Patrick Higgins' String Quartet No. 2, a seven-movement work that explores the function of memory and recollection as musical forms. Developing across a palindromic movement structure, the quartet moves through a cycle of compositional styles from diatonic tonal material, to atonal, lyrical writing, to twelve-tone, micro-tonal, and indeterminate materials --the work is concerned with the ability of musical form to reconstruct or "remember" across extreme developments in material. Part two sees Higgins reworking Higgins in an experimental re-imagining of SQ2. At moments evoking the spirit of STEREO, Glacia is inspired by the interchange of the perceptual and physical properties of ice fields, music that is at once static, monolithic and integrated, while still fluid, fragile, dynamic, and fleeting. In posting an exclusive preview "Wind Tunnel" from the Glacia disc, sez "Patrick Higgins truthfully inhabits the personas of both shredder and composer...shredder in the Yngwie/Satch paradigm...[yet] a legit modern classical entity." Click thru for the preview track! Come out to an exclusive preview show on October 4 at (le) poisson rouge (tix) with Buke & Gase, Mivos Quartet, and Patrick Higgins to hear the material performed live and pick up an advanced copy of the LP! Cassette Store Day!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Cassette Store Day event today at Silent Barn! Was great to talk to enthusiastic tape fans, meet some other labels (including Mirror Universe Tapes, who sold me my first new music tape in 2009), preview some tapes, and generally celebrate the medium. Speaking of celebrating:W+D Cassette Store Day Exclusive: Patrick Higgins - OƎЯƎTƧ 2xc48To celebrate Cassette Store Day, we've put together a super-limited inverted edition of last year's Impose favorite, the quardaphonic double-tape STEREO from Patrick Higgins. What does inverted mean? It means we flipped the red tapes with white text to white tapes with red text, inverted the album art, and hooked up the W+D mastering system with channels 3-4 to tracks 1-2, and channels 1-2 to tracks 3-4, resulting in a recording that plays the original STEREO program from end-to-beginning. Most music played backwards sounds like just that: a song, being played in reverse. The droning, metallic sounds of Higgins' uncompromising composition, on the other hand, take on a quality all their own when played in reverse, matching the original's deftness and agility but taking on a newly alien, haunting quality.Edition of 15 hand-assembled tapes. Greenpoint. Free show, cheap beer, a couple of great live acts, and a culmination in a full listen-though of KI - RSVP here!

Patrick Higgins' STEREO on Impose Best Cassettes of 2012 list

We are honored to find that the most-recent W+D tape, Patrick Higgins' ambitious 4-channel double-tape STEREO, was listed among Impose Magazine's The Best Cassette Releases of 2012 list. Here's the blurb:
(image) The phrase “quadraphonic recording” tends to set expectations of something so purposefully erudite and abstract that you’d probably have a better time having your friend who is really into Stockhausen explain the record to you, rather than actually listening. Even the idea of a quadraphonic tape release is inherently a bit exclusive, what with the need to sync up two stereo tape decks or actually own a quadraphonic mixer. Enter: NYC composer and Zs/Bachanalia member Patrick Higgins’ STEREO. The level of ambition and execution in this three-part, 40 minute long composition are powerfully matched, and the level of technique and the sheer amount of polyphony in this piece are actually stunning. This release pushes the conventions of the tape medium and the ear of the listener. The manic energy and uncanny appeal can’t be denied as this fever dream brain puzzle rips itself open again and again.

Copies of the tape are still available — click through to Releases to pick up one of 2012's best!

Patrick Higgins 'STEREO' release show + pre-sale

Patrick Higgins, Mas Ysa, Lea Bertucci + DJ Choette and The Oracle DJs
Thursday, Nov 8 | Death By Audio, 49 S. 2nd Street, BK | 8PM | $8

Block off your Thursday night next week (and cross your fingers for Subway access by then!) cuz you're not going to want to miss the tape release show for the quadraphonic double-tape STEREO. Taking place in the intimate Death By Audio confines, the release show will feature a special one-night-only 4-channel setup to give those of you without such an unreasonable overabundance of stereo gear at home the opportunity to hear this stunning material in its full, confounding glory.. Described by TinyMixTapes as "WAY weird in a WAY-WAY good WAY," STEREO is "a total juxtaposition of Patrick’s Bachanalia suites. Yet...catchier, in a feverish sort of way. Weirdly, it almost sounds modular driven, as if he tried to cover a M. Geddes jam."

If you just can't wait to put your order in (or have the misfortune of not being able to attend the show), pre-order is now available via the Releases page. Check it!

Announcing Patrick Higgins - Stereo C48

Words+Dreams is pleased to announce that downtown composer/guitarist Patrick Higgins (ZS, Bachanalia) will release a new record of works for solo guitar and laptop electronics. STEREO is a three-part composition written and recorded in quadraphonic four-channel stereo, to be released as a special-edition double cassette this November 8th. Making use of extended techniques, time-shift and phase manipulations, as well as a custom-designed digital delay interface, Higgins’ STEREO is a work that both celebrates and disfigures the tradition of solo guitar performance.  STEREO is a must for fans of drone, post-minimalism, avant-garde, and uncompromising instrumental works. STEREO will be released on two stereophonic cassettes designed to be played simultaneously on two independent stereo systems or through a single quadraphonic receiver connected to two tape decks. In the tradition of four channel stereo gear of the 70s (hyped in marketing materials as the next logical step after stereo dominated mono) and presaging the later dominance of home theater and multi-channel setups, quadraphony — the forefather of surround sound — is lovingly resurrected for this ambitious and unusual release. In addition to the double cassette, each tape will include a download code to collect a standard stereo downmix, plus the option of a digital 4-channel encode to be played back on your home theater or surround sound system.Preview part 2 of STEREO, "Pointillist," below: frameborder="no" height="166" scrolling="no" src="" width="100%">[...]

If you're interested in the Maze Mixtape, you can now stream the whole thing, track-by-track, on the BC page, and buy a Digital Download postcard for just $4; that's just 18¢ a song, or 4¢ per minute of music, aka CHEAP! More past W+D content will be filtering on to the Bandcamp page soon, too, but in the mean time, check out the embedded app below, the new tab on Facebook, and buy a download postcard. The actual tapes will be available for web sales very soon!

Introducing Physical Filesharing Download Postcards

Since all of the Maze art is transparent, we had to fit the the tracklist and download code somewhere else. From this need was borne the idea of the Physical Filesharing Download Postcard: a limited edition Maze print on heavy gloss stock with the tracklist, release notes, and your download code on the reverse. There are four prints from inside this year's Maze; you can preview them all below, and pick a postcard of your choice when you buy a copy of the tape or a standalone download from Bandcamp. Why a "Physical Filesharing Download Postcard"? Because each download code can be redeemed by 2 different users! After you download of the release, write the address on the address block provided, and physically share some files with a friend! Postcard stamps are only 32¢, and everyone loves getting mail that's not bills — why not surprise someone with some killer art & music?Photo credit: Alexander Perrelli/[...]

The Kickstarter has a deadline of this coming Sunday, July 15 at 9:14 AM, so if you want a copy, make your moves soon!

YouAreHere: The Maze Mixtape

(image) Coming in just over two weeks, YouAreHere: The Maze Mixtape is a 20-track cross section of musicians and bands playing in this year's You Are Here Festival aka The Maze. The Maze Mixtape is an incredible collection music from the constantly intersecting and sub-dividing worlds of avant-garde, hip-hop, experimental, indie, electronic, and noise. With many never-previously-released tracks and a prodigious, diverse list of contributors, this unique release stands as a sonic extension of the physical and aural experience of the Maze.

Like the Maze itself, The Maze Mixtape's design is a disorienting combination of closed and open spaces created from multiple layers of overlapping line art, a celebration of the possible positive qualities of negative space when carried into the third dimension. The design will be composed of three separate components in addition to the all-clear tape shell: the insert, the A-side label, and the B-side label, all color-printed on transparency material.

The tape will be available for purchase two ways: starting tomorrow, half of the tapes will be listed as a new reward for a $15 US-shipping/$20 Int'l-shipping on the You Are Here Festival Kickstarter, which help supports both the New York incarnation of the festival, and a Berlin installation coming in the fall. Please note this will the only way to order the tapes online! The other half of the run will, of course, be for sale in the Maze.

Limited Edition Maze Compilation Coming in July!

This coming July, the art duo Trouble, comprised of Sam Hillmer aka the Diamond Terrifier, and his wife, sculptor Laura Paris, will be putting on a month-long exhibition called the YOU ARE HERE Festival at Secret Project Robot in Bushwick. The festival will feature some 50+ musicians and performers, and will take place in giant maze that fills up and subdivides the entire performance space, disrupting typical concert expectations by putting the performers and the viewers in the same confined, confusing space. The festival has already received glowing coverage from Impose, TinyMixTapes, and AdHoc.

As part of the festival, W+D will be releasing a limited-edition Maze Compilation tape featuring exclusive tracks from many of the artists who will be playing. We're working on something really exciting for the art, but the details aren't quite finalized yet, so check back for more on that soon.

In the meantime, swing by Vice's Noisey to read an interview with Hillmer about the maze, see the full lineup/schedule, and to stream the 30-minute MAZE MIX I put together for the festival.

- Richard Gehr, The Village Voice

"Shrine Flu finds Hillmer at his most structurally meditative to date, with the solo saxophonist allowing a reflective atmosphere to resonate while channeling one of his trademark skills: not rushing toward climax while enjoying the process of the journey."
