A roaring fire
A pile of smoldering coals
A thundering storm
A raindrop, the first, to fall from the sky
A raging ocean
A single wave crashing to shore

Top Story of 2010's

I believe the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010 is one of the biggest stories of the decade. It not only was a devastating earthquake in magnitude, but also in the sense of where it happened. Haiti is a relatively poor country and didn't have the money to prepare for such a massive natural disaster. They had almost no earthquake ready buildings and very little emergency relief services. The result of this unexpected disaster was about 150,000 deaths and many more injured. It was an awful tragedy but it showed one good thing about our planet. We as a human race know how to come together.

Earthquakes are the one natural disaster that we arent given any heads up for. This is partly what causes them to leave so many people injuerd and dead. The death tole is a little over 500 and those injured is far greater. There are many search and rescue operations going on searching for any survivors but the last person to be found was a 13 year old boy who was found early friday morning. Officials are moving quickly trying to clean up before winter temperatures move in and stop the search and rescue opperations. We can only hope that the death tole doesnt continue to climb.

Response to Lucinda's Earthquake Story

Thu, 05 May 2011 12:51:23 +0000

I was kind of surprised reading Lucinda’s story “My Earthquake Story” from because she was calm at the end of the story. She was scared in the beginning but it seemed like the people around her were more scared than her. She was more casual about how the earthquake hit Japan.
