Social media and online community is a continuum and just because you only have enough time or resources -- or because the SoW only explicitly states Twitter and Facebook -- doesn't mean you can ignore message boards, forums, groups, or even lists and possibly even IRC.

Amen to that. I have a client in the chemicals sector that was looking to get in front of their major purchasers. We did a full audit...looked everywhere to see if this group of people was congregating online, if so, where. Big zero on blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, wikis, YouTube...just about every channel we could think of. Where did they turn up in force? Forums. I thought those had mostly gone away given the popularity of other channels, but there they were, talking up a storm. Just goes to show, data is better than gut.
