Whistling T D and S sounds

2017-06-22T21:24:13.614Z

I've always been fairly sibilant, but recently I'm hearing actual whistling sounds on my T, S and D sounds (mostly T). Any exercises to correct this?

Thanks...JM

Seeking Mic Pre Recommendations

2017-06-22T20:47:21.895Z

Hi there. I've been using a Sennheiser 416 now for a while with my Roland Quad-Capture I/O. The 416 sounds great at all the studios I've worked at, but on my home setup I'm finding my T, D and S sounds are very harsh and pronounced. And overall my raw takes seem to lack richness and definition - a bit dull. I've adjusted my mic technique but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

I'd like to start by trying a new preamp, to hopefully reduce that harshness, but without losing warmth, richness and definition. (By "warmth" I don't mean muddy or lacking high end or definition). Now at the moment I don't have the budget for an Avalon or Manley pre, so I'm hoping to hear from you on some less expensive options. I believe in "try the cheapest option first", as long as it's pro grade stuff.

I use Sound Forge 10 or Pro on a Windows 7 rig.

Thoughts?

Thanks...JM

Speaking English in Foreign Dialects - Racist?

2016-12-10T23:55:38.654Z

Happy Holidays!

When narrating books, I used to speak dialogue in whatever dialect the character "spoke" in. However, it's been suggested to me that speaking English in certain foreign accents, such as East Indian & Japanese, could be interpreted as racist. So, should I simply skip doing any dialects & concentrate on the demeanor & personalty of all the speakers, or hire actors with those real dialects to speak in those sections? (which could be costly) What has been your…

It's not what you've done in the past...it's what are you doing now?

Be cautious about talking too much or too often about what you have done in past years, Actors are all insecure and want to hang with "today's winning team." That's why you want to get involved in today's projects with today's people and talk about that. Let people know you are viable and active. No one wants Gloria Swanson's Sunset Blvd!  So talk about today and tomorrow's plans.…

Frothy Mouth & Swollen Tongue

2014-08-26T03:23:05.376Z

I'm close to finishing my first professional audiobook production. I have a question for you seasoned pros out there. When I perform my characters, I have no trouble at all, but when I record the narration and main character, my mouth gets all frothy. I have to rinse and swallow so often. Also, my tongue seems to swell. Am I just working too hard? Have you any tips on handling this problem?

Auditioning on the road: phone or usb mic/laptop?

2014-08-13T14:04:17.544Z

I've started seeing more and more comments and discussions regarding home auditions for voice-over and on-camera where people are using their phones for tapings.  In the past, I've traveled with my laptop and USB microphone to be available for those MP3 submissions when away.  Now, I'm wondering if I should just use the recording device on my iPhone 4 for the MP3 auditions and even video camera with YouTube application for on-camera submissions?  The iPhone 4 does have an editing feature in…

Has anyone worked with Voces en La Red based in Madrid?

2014-07-07T11:44:08.663Z

hello everyone!

I was wondering if anyone has every worked with a Spanish agency called Voces en La Red, based in Madrid. I'm having problems getting paid from them and it would be good to know if anyone has had bad experiences with them. They paid my first job but now they've completely disappeared and not paid my second invoice. They haven't replied my emails/messages in more than 2 months now and I would have expected a reply at least just to know if the client is late with their…
