Helping middle schoolers become “contenders”

Talking about sports with a Wake Forest football player is helping a group of eighth graders engage in reading. Wendell Dunn, a defensive end for the Demon Deacons, has teamed up with Wake Forest education professor Alan Brown to lead an after-school sports literacy program for students at Paisley IB Magnet School in Winston-Salem.

WFU to toast the life and legacy of alumnus Arnold Palmer April 6

Wake Forest University students, faculty and staff will toast alumnus and legendary golfer Arnold Palmer to coincide with the first day of the Masters Tournament. The student-run Traditions Council, men's and women's golf teams and other members of the campus community will enjoy signature “Arnold Palmer” drinks of iced tea and lemonade, honoring the alumnus who died Sept. 25.

Sports writer Robert Lipsyte to visit 8th grade literacy program

Author and nationally known sports journalist Robert Lipsyte will talk about "The Contender" with a group of 8th graders who are reading his book in an after-school sports literacy program at Paisley IB Magnet School. The program is led by Wake Forest University education professor Alan Brown and Wake Forest football student-athlete Wendell Dunn.

WFU student NCAA Tournament watch party planned tonight

Wake Forest University students will gather in the Sutton Center tonight as the men's basketball team faces Kansas State in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. The Screamin' Demons and Office of the President organized the watch party, which begins at 9 p.m. Tip-off is at 9:10 p.m.

Deacs defeat No. 23 Temple to win Military Bowl

Wake Forest football jumped out to a 31-7 lead and held on to defeat No. 23-ranked Temple 34-26 to win the 2016 Military Bowl. The victory was the Demon Deacons' first bowl win since 2008 and the first victory over a ranked team since 2011.

Wake Forest finishes as runner-up in national title

After 110 scoreless minutes, the Wake Forest men's soccer team came up a penalty kick short of the national championship, falling to Stanford, 5-4, in penalties in Houston on Sunday afternoon. WFU's Ian Harkes was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the College Cup.
