Ex-MSNBC host Ed Schultz in a recent interview ripped his former network as "in the tank for Hillary Clinton" and suggested he was fired in 2015 because of his support for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.). Schultz, who now anchors a show on RT, told National Review's Jamie Weinstein in an an interview posted Friday that MSNBC chief Phil Griffin was a "watchdog," and he said he was often given direction on what stories to cover. Sanders gave his official campaign launch speech in Burlington, Vermont on May 26, 2015, and Schultz said he was the only cable news host planning to air it live. Analysis: what is the Commonwealth?Analysis: what is the Commonwealth?

Thu, 19 Apr 2018 16:00:06 -0400

This week sees world leaders in London for the bi-annual Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. But you may be wondering what exactly is the Commonwealth and what does it do? The Commonwealth is one of the world's oldest political associations. It is made up of 53 states in 6 continents previously ruled by the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a total population of 2.4 billion people in countries including Canada, Australia, Nigeria, India and much of the Caribbean. Three nations, Cameroon, Mozambique and Rwanda, joined despite having never been in the British Empire. Membership is voluntary and based on a shared commitment to values including liberty, human rights, trade and good governance. The Commonwealth Games, a sort of mini Olympics, also takes place every 4 years. But there are questions about the relevance of the organisation. Its colonial history continues to cause issues particularly when it comes to anti-LGBT laws still enforced in 37 member countries. It is hoped that the popularity of younger royals like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry and fianc'ee Megan Markle jetting off on tours around the Commonwealth will help to sustain it. Reporting from London, ' Vincent McAviney said: "With Britain also leaving the EU, Brexiteers are adamant that the Commonwealth will take on a new importance. They're promising new trade relationships and having taken back border controls swapping EU for Commonwealth migration."

Israelis on Thursday (April 19) celebrated the nation's 70th anniversary, with military honour guards and a reception at the presidential residence. President, Reuven Rivlin, and his Chief of Staff, Gadi Eizenkot, inspected an honour guard, with the Israeli army marching band playing in the background. Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman walked side by side with Rivlin as they marked the start of Thursday's Independence Day celebrations. During the ceremony Netanyahu spoke of the need for Israeli's to make sacrifices to ensure a secure future. Helicopters flew over Jerusalem and other Israeli cities, and throughout the day, there were to be a number of military displays as many Israelis celebrated outdoors with their families. While Israelis celebrate their independence, Palestinians will mark the "Nakba", or catastrophe, of the Jewish state's creation, when about 700,000 people, half the Palestinian population of Palestine, fled or were driven from their homes by Jewish fighters. Official Palestinian ceremonies and protests will take place on May 15th.

Thu, 19 Apr 2018 15:58:13 -0400

Syrian government troops have found chlorine bombs of western production, said spokeswoman for Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova. "In the liberated territories of Eastern Ghouta, Syrian government troops have found containers with chlorine - the most terrible type of chemical weapons - the containers are from Germany, as well as smoke flasks from - attention! - Salisbury," she said at a briefing in Moscow. The Porton Down laboratory is located not far from the city of Salisbury in Great Britain, whereby an alleged poisoning of the Skripals took place last month. "This fact is difficult to comment in any way, it is so frightening and undermines the belief in the humanity of individual states. Of course, we are not talking about whole states, but about those politicians and leaders who give such orders and make such decisions, "- noted Zakharova.
