I like how you explain every step of the solution Steven. It may seem obvious for some of us but most people don't see it right away as Jun did.

Both equations represent a line that you can draw in a graph, where y is the vertical axis and x is the horizontal axis. If both lines are not parallel there must be ONE value for x and y where BOTH equations are correct and the lines intersect. In short, you have to solve this set of equations: 8x + 4y = 0 2x - 4y = 8 Both equations can be simplified, so: 2x + y = 0 x - 2y = 4 Write the second equation this way: x = 4 + 2y Replace this in the first equation: 2x + y = 0 2(4 + 2y) + y = 0 8 + 4y + y = 0 8 + 5y = 0 8 = -5y y = -8/5 Now find x: x = 4 + 2y x = 4 + 2(-8/5) = 4 - 16/5 = 20/5 - 16/5 = 4/5 So the answer is: x = 4/5 y = -8/5

8x+4y=0 2x-4y=8 (8x+4y)+(2x-4y)=8+0 namely 10x=8, x=0.8 2x0.8-4y=8→4y=2x0.8-8=-6.4 y=-1.6 so x=0.8 y=-1.6
