Dusk Dances

Sun, 07 Aug 2011 07:35:52 +0000

Dusk Dances brings dance to pubic parks thoughout Canada. At sunset the audience is led around the park to five choreographic works specially commisioned for the location.

In Toronto dances are performed at Earlscourt Park, Withrow Park and McGregor Park.

It's a pay-what-you-can event. The band starts at 7 and dances start at 7:30. See their website for dates.

Promise cherry beach sundays

Sun, 05 Jun 2011 18:33:42 +0000

The beloved summer sunday afternoon dance party by the lake. Their picnics start June 1st for 2014.

The event takes place every Sunday from 3-11(but check on long weekends as the party usually gets moved to Monday). Aside from dancing if it's not crazy crowded you might be able to just chill on a blanket and chat with the friendly folks who flock there (rember if you flock there, you are one of the aforementioned friendly folks!), hoola a hoop, throw a frisbee, picnic or contemplate the lake.

The party is a PWYC affair. They suggest $5(some say they strongly suggest). Get there by following the Martin Goodman trail through Cherry beach and listen for the music. See their site for DJ lineups and further information.

Note: They don't allow alcohol and You're expected to leave no trace. This means cleaning up after yourself (Including any cigarette butts)

The Move

Sun, 07 Nov 2010 22:52:21 +0000

The move became one of my favourite indoor dance events due to a few key factors:

1 - It's in a real dance studio
The floor is meant for dancing; springy, smooth and a surface that is comfortable to be barefoot on. It's also spacious enough that even when it's busy there is still enough room to be physically exuberant.

2 - The music
A rotating group of DJ's playing an eclectic variety of music keeps things from getting boring. They also tend to keep the volume at a level where it still sounds good(most dance clubs seem to raise the volume to the point where it starts to distort the music).

3 - Focus on the Dancing
People are coming here to dance. There's no alcohol and no talking. It starts early enough that you can show up, dance hard for two hours, feel you've had a great workout and still have a few hours left in the evening to do whatever else tickles your fancy

4 - Good Vibes
Like you'd expect from an ecstatic dance event it's a fairly diverse and positive group. Young and old, people are comfortable expressing themselves openly without judgment.

The event takes place every Friday 7:30-9:30. It's best to arrive on time or even early if you want to make sure you get in.

You can find them on facebook here
