I don't think that I need this. Maybe if one has kids, it can be quite good to see where they are hanging around. But beside, hm..

I don't really see Yelp's check-ins as a credible threat, but Facebook could certainly go after this hard.

Foursquare is primarily for letting your friends know where you are and figuring out where they are. I like to use it on my iPhone. Other Stuff: Check out some high quality streaming live cams on Live Jasmin. You can see on Jasmin Live what a better quality stream really has to offer from Live Jasmine webcams!

Paulina, I so agree! I don't actually like facebook (even though I have an account). I don't have many fb friends (fewer than 50); to me fb is a way of "collecting" friends like bubblegum baseball cards; friends have become like a status symbol. Adults have regressed to childhood and are rapidly changing the definition of "friend".

i love it, but they need to improve the android application.......

What will happen to Foursquare when Google Places comes active? Not sure I am keen on this whole idea anyway. Fishing Chair fan

Foursquare also has its uses in the B2B sales and marketing world. It can be useful for increased SEO, adding a new layer to your CRM, and enhancing tradeshow activities. Check out a full explanation here:

Looks like a government sponsored website if I've ever seen one!

Slightly off-topic, but the iPhone home screen grabs accompanying this article appear to show an unlocked (jailbroken) iPhone, with a few 8 and 16 bit console games/emulators installed along with Foursquare. Is that the target market - hackers with "glory days of gaming" flashbacks?

I am new to Foursquare and like the concept. I have always been interested in gps and gis stuff. Now with google street view and live web camera everywhere. Flight view to track airplanes. Black boxes in our cars. Everyone will soon not only know that your at a bar with your friends but be able to see you too, Sounds like a military operation to me. If only I was a few years younger, I love it!!

Personally, I feel that Dennis Crowley was better as a music teacher at St. Bernard's. Who's with me?

I agree. It's surprisingly how *few* users FourSquare and the others have.

you should foureye me then, foursquare. we can discuss your AOL addiction over some shrimp cocktail and dirty russians.

i love it, but they need to improve the android app..

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 11:29:20 -0500

Okay, I admit it. I'm just getting old. And really happy none of my youthful exploits were ever filmed with a camera, much less posted for the world to see. Just fun conversation with those that were there at the time, "Remember when. . .?" Besides, who wants anyone to know where they are at any time? That's weird, too.

Well, this isn't nearly so exhibitionist as you might think. You only check-in with a select group of people. My rule is, I only become foursquare friends with someone I hope to run into at a bar. (Not a huge group of people)

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 11:14:51 -0500

With all the free coverage they get in SAI and TC, you'd figure more than 275k would sign up. sheesh. NIck, would it be more efficient to just hand over your paycheck to them and have them fire up some SEM campaigns? This is becoming a complete shill for one company - foursquare. I smell.... BUBBLE !

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 11:14:25 -0500

4 square fills up my twitter with meaningless crap. Well I should say: "even more meaningless crap." Screw you 4 square.

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 11:11:07 -0500

Hmm, a little math 4^2 + groupon = $ 4^2 + new social network = growth opp 4^2 + search + recommendation engine + trusted social network = better yelp with less coverage

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 11:08:19 -0500

These things are creepy. Call a friend, make a date, go out and meet the friend for cofee, and none of anyone else who knows either of you has to know where you are and who you are with. And leave the phones and blackberries in the car. Why, oh, why do young people have this crazy exhibitionist tendency? Big Brother is self created by the ignorant masses.

Yes, Foursquare will always be at risk of becoming someone else's feature. They're working on adding a lot more, but we'll see. I don't really see Yelp's check-ins as a credible threat, but Facebook could certainly go after this hard.

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 10:18:11 -0500

I played with it for a few months, and obsessively checked in everywhere, racking up more than 100 mayorships, nearly every badge possible and ranking as #1 in NYC for many weeks (I raised more than $40 in the Pepsi points challenge). But to what end -- there's nothing you can "do" on Foursquare. Location-based services are something interesting that should be added to other applications, but Foursquare doesn't have much appeal as a destination unto its own. I hear that Yelp introduced something along these lines, and it's a perfect acquisition for Facebook. I stopped participating over a month ago.

I'm your friend, Sammy. Message: I care where you are on Foursquare. Still, aren't you guys a little behind the curve with this? This site used to be cutting edge, now you're doing a piece that would be perfect for Fortune magazine ("Hey, what is this Facebook thing that all the kids are talking about?") Really, I worry for you, Business Insider. Next thing, you'll be telling us all about this crazy Twitter thing that everybody's talking about.

Nicholas Carlson

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 09:20:04 -0500

I almost agree with you. Foursquare doesn't have consumer adoption yet. For me, it goes like this: SAI TechCrunch VCs who "want Foursquare so bad" But the moneymen are going nuts over it so we need to pay attention.

Thu, 28 Jan 2010 09:17:48 -0500

Guys, this is a bit insulting. The only "people" I ever hear talking about FourSquare is writers from SAI and Techcrunch. Period. The one thing that people in my office have been talking about in this context: just how many damn companies offer "check-in's". Yelp, Loopt, Gowalla, MyTown and several others we've never heard of before. This is BORING.

I really don't have many friends and the ones I do have wouldn't care where I am at any certain time. Is there still any purpose for me to use this app?
