Review: Redemption & Ruin by The Devil Makes Three

Thu, 30 Nov 2017 12:45:00 -0500

The Devil Makes Three are a three piece. You could consider them a power trio, sure, the drums and loudness are exchanged for fiddle and the acoustic instruments that comprise most old timey or folky music. TDMT’s new release is “Redemption and Ruin”; the title is certainly telling considering the song choices.

Review: A Perfect Circle

Mon, 20 Nov 2017 14:00:00 -0500

Fabric stalactites hung from the ceiling of the stage giving the perception that the audience was peering into a dark cave. And dark it was. Dark and foggy. Three raised, circular platforms which doubled in height moving left to right with the far-right circle being roughly 5 feet off the ground and housing the drum set of Jeff Friedl.

Review: The Milk Carton Kids

Wed, 08 Nov 2017 12:45:00 -0500

Beach Slang at Southgate House Revival

Thu, 02 Nov 2017 14:00:00 -0400

Is “punk rock” still a thing? Depends on who you ask, one supposes. The idea is alive and well, to be sure, but we’re knee deep in contrived notions of so many things, it’s almost impossible to tell sincerity from, well, most everything else.

Sat, 28 Oct 2017 14:15:00 -0400

Few bands are able to transition from heaviness to subtlety, sledgehammer sound to ambience, the way that mewithoutYou has managed. Over the course of 15 or so years, this post-hardcore/post-rock band has gone from overwhelmingly abrasive to downright weird to both, somehow, at the same time. And, somehow, they’ve remained absolutely true to themselves the entire time.

Review: Michale Graves

Tue, 17 Oct 2017 10:30:00 -0400

I have to admit something. I’ve never been to a show at the Northside Yacht Club prior to the Michale Graves show. Upon walking in, I immediately noticed how small of a venue it was. I was actually excited by this as smaller concert venues usually means the show will be in an imitate setting.

CincyMusic Fall Spotify Playlist

Mon, 16 Oct 2017 13:45:00 -0400

Blue Wisp Big Band 2017

Fri, 13 Oct 2017 13:30:00 -0400

A jazz big band is quite a thing, something unto itself. It’s an organic unit — a molecular structure, so to speak — that happened to form over time and makes sense, as does a piano trio or a string quartet. At a certain point in the evolution of jazz, four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, piano, bass and drums just made musical sense and came into being.

Epic Man Food at Louder Than Life

Fri, 06 Oct 2017 12:10:00 -0400

Review: Rachel Mousie - Talk To Your Babies

Fri, 06 Oct 2017 11:45:00 -0400

Rachel Mousie releases her new album, Talk To Your Babies, on October 7th. The eleven-track collection shrewdly reimagines folky allegories and nostalgic aphorisms into a self-reflective protest album. Her first full length release in 6-years, the deliberate angular focus of each song demonstrates how cohesive an artist can become working for as much time on new material.

Review: Louder than Life

Mon, 02 Oct 2017 13:15:00 -0400

This year’s lineup featured hard hitting bands such as Rob Zombie, Incubus, Prophets of Rage, Stone Sour, and the Prince of Darkness himself Ozzy Osbourne. This year’s festival was truly a special opportunity to see Ozzy Osborne, the man who invented Heavy Metal with his band Black Sabbath in 1970.

If by chance you have not heard his The Last Days of Oakland album I suggest you do so quick, fast and in a hurry!

Review: MidPoint Music Festival

Mon, 25 Sep 2017 14:00:00 -0400

This past weekend, Midpoint Music Festival took place inside of the Taft Theatre and Masonic Center in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. The venue change gave the festival a very different feeling compared to the outdoor location in Over the Rhine where Band of Horses headlined last year. The Taft Theatre / Masonic Center featured unique historical architecture that gave attendees a more refined experience and provided a centralized location for the many bands to showcase their music. Going to this festival gave me the feeling of a classy night out to the ballet or opera and exploring the different ball rooms was an adventure in its self.
