Tue, 06 Mar 2018 12:00:00 -0500

I’m With Her, made up of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan, took the stage at Memorial Hall this Monday night. The band formed on a whim in 2014, recognizing their chemistry after playing an impromptu show. Their debut album, See You Around was released last month and is full of transcendent harmonies and unrivaled musicianship. To say that those things translated well live would be quite the understatement.

Tue, 06 Mar 2018 11:30:00 -0500

There’s not much I can say about Frontier Folk Nebraska that I haven’t already written of, many times over. Good folks, good music. Cincinnati is fortunate to have them in our midst. Their once and future tourmate, William Matheny, is no stranger to the area, and with his own take on earnest and nostalgic Midwestern Rock, he travels a good amount of common ground with Frontier Folk Nebraska.

Kevin Devine: Revival in the Revival Room

Thu, 01 Mar 2018 12:45:00 -0500

My connection to Kevin Devine’s music goes back some time now. I lived in New Jersey for a while, but was close enough to NYC and Philly to make regular treks to both for shows that were coming through the region. I won’t call it my “emo” phase, because if I’m being honest, I’ve always been a little bit emo. We all have. Don’t deny it.

Ben Sollee Bringing Kentucky Native to Woodward Theater

Thu, 01 Mar 2018 08:00:00 -0500

My first job after college basically paid me in beans, but they did send all 150-ish recent college graduates working across the country out to Aspen for a week-long vacation. So there I was in December 2009 with a 3-day lift ticket but 7 days to hang around the beautiful mountain town. On one of those days, December 16th, bluegrass/folk-rock group Trampled by Turtles was slated to play The Belly Up with Ben Sollee as the opening support.

Greensky Bluegrass is on tap to headline both nights, which is worth the very reasonable price of admission by itself.

MISSIO, electronic rock duo from Austin, Texas, graced the stage of 20th Century Theatre Wednesday night for their first show in Cincinnati and delivered an incredible set. Tue, 13 Feb 2018 13:00:00 -0500

Forget the traditional Valentine’s Day routine of the boring gifts of heart shaped boxes of chocolates and overpriced flowers followed by a dinner and a movie. That’s so lame. Instead do something a little different this year and take your sweetie out for a night out of some awesome live music brought to you by a bunch of crazed fast food mascots.

Review: Hippo Campus

Fri, 09 Feb 2018 13:15:00 -0500

I’m no newbie when it comes to Hippo Campus shows. I saw them a couple of years ago for the first time and was immediately struck by their energy. This was the biggest turnout I’ve seen thus far, only proving the success Hippo Campus has achieved since the release of their first solo album Landmark. Selling out 20th Century Theater, the band has made an impact on Cincinnati and gained quite the following.

Review: In Plain Sight by Spring Grove

Thu, 08 Feb 2018 13:30:00 -0500

In Plain Sight is the 5-song debut EP by Cincinnati natives Spring Grove. After listening, it’s hard to believe this is the group’s first release. There is some real production value here. This is not the run of the mill album someone tries to sell you outside of a venue after a show. This is the real deal.

Mon, 05 Feb 2018 13:00:00 -0500

Root Cellar Xtract Honor Locals at SGHR

Tue, 23 Jan 2018 12:30:01 -0500

Root Cellar Xtract’s music and sound is deeply rooted in the earliest origins of true “California Country-Rock”. Root Cellar Xtract harkens back to the era of the mid 60’s to early 70’s and hills of Laurel Canyon, California which was the birthplace of California Country Rock. Fueled by the songwriting of Clyde Bailey, the consummate musicians of Root Cellar Xtract play a kind of throw-back country rock which embodies the rootsy soulfulness of that early country rock sound. But there's a stripped-down purity, a maturity, that makes this a thoroughly modern outfit.
