Mon, 04 Feb 2013 12:49:07 +0000

I helped with the development of English Central's teacher's area and now give them advice on making their site more "teaching sound". I am really excited about it as a powerful student learning tool. Also, how teachers can track student achievement and use it to assess speaking ability. If you haven't visited English Central yet, WATCH the DEMO (or see it below) and see how powerful it might be for your digital students!
Click and sign up as a teacher!
CENTRAL HAS A TEACHER'S FORUM!BLOG!
English Central allows:
* students to practice recording their voices with authentic videos
* students to get feedback about their speaking/pronunciation
* teachers to track and set goals for student achievement

David edited Collaborative Writing Online

Thu, 01 Sep 2011 12:48:16 +0000

Writing is a major skill that all English language teachers will at some time have to teach. The internet is a boon for writing teachers! It offers synchronous (at the same time) or asynchronous (at different times) writing platforms that allow the teacher to add, comment, correct in real time.
and Pirate Pad(also Etherpad) %5Boutlined on this post%5D
1. Google Docs.
The leader in online collaboration, google uses a "Cloud" process so your documents are stored and reachable by you and others wherever you may be. You can use google docs with a gmail account or a google account (use your non gmail email address).Take a tour here.
With google docs, all your students can have access to a document or "create/build" a document. It is a complete word processing suite - very powerful. Students can leave messages and see old/new versions. of documents. There is online chat so that members of the document "team" can chat at the same time as they work. Cool stuff and students can work together either at school or at home, on their projects/documents.

Zdenek, I'm not so sold on abode used in that way - but also think, whatever works for the teacher is best - so long as it accomplishes the objectives for the student. I use adobe a lot but it makes more sense just to create a web page and use html. If you know it. Also many sites like Lingt (a full LMS) or glogster allow you to do basically the same thing but also with recording ability.

Thanks David! This is a great tool... especially for teachers who work in schools where Youtube has been blocked.

David edited Download from Youtube

Keepvid is still the best place to download a video from youtube. This is important for instruction as you can't be 100% certain your internet will stream well. Keepvid is very stable and reliable. Watch this tutorial that takes your through the 4 easy steps. Also, use our handy ad free/searchable player for youtube!
Also, you can download an mp3 from youtube. Use Video2mp3 and just copy the address (press "Share" under the youtube video) and enter/paste the address.
How to Use Keepvid Copy the URL from the youtube you want to save:
Paste URL into Keepvid. There will be three download buttons, I always choose the mp4 high quality. Mp4 is a good file type to upload onto EFL. BUT, if you do a regular left click on that download button, this box will appear:
The problem with this is, you can only click save, and you can't rename the file. So on my computer, the video gets saved to my desktop, and if I don't rename it right away, I have to click on it to play to see what I've got. The BETTER way is to right click on the download button. Then this box appears. Choose Save link as....
Now I can choose where to save the video on my computer, and I can rename it:
And it downloads onto my computer, in the file I have choosen:

Thank you for this wonderful site. I have tried all kinds of software to make my classes learn more and I have to say that the best thing I have found is the Adobe extended which allows you create pdf files. The advantages are following: a) everything is in one file b) all the contents plays everywhere c) those who like things on the paper can print it out. d) You can insert video and flash and play it everywhere. e) It can be highly interactive You can see some examples of my work at my blog http://www.englishrot.com/?page_id=116. Have a nice day Zdenda
