These ugly Christmas sweaters are guaranteed to last until 2047

While trends come and go, ugly Christmas sweaters stay the same. At least that’s the theory behind Tom Cridland, an environmentally conscious brand that has been embraced by celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Kendrick Lamar. All the clothes within the collection are made of sustainable materials, and they are designed to last a lifetime. The hope is that this “buy less, buy better” philosophy will keep clothes out of landfills.

Everything Wrong With SNL’s “Sexual Harassment Charlie” Sketch

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 15:00:15 GMT

It’s not clear exactly what this “Saturday Night Live” sketch is trying to say about the current crop of sexual harassers losing their jobs, but here’s what it seemed to be saying.

Contrary to popular opinion, 2017 is not the best time to be a comedy writer.

Someday, Someone Will Build A Great Dual-Screen Phone—Maybe Even Apple

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 14:00:46 GMT

ZTE’s ungainly new Axon M shows that it isn’t easy to cram two displays into one smartphone. But the concept is still worth pursuing.

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been using a smartphone with a superpower.

This Natural Liquid Silk Is Starting To Replace Oil-Based Plastic

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 14:00:26 GMT

There’s a lot of retro-chemicals in products we put on or in our bodies. This company wants to replace it with a new form of silk.

Microbeads, the tiny plastic beads used in some facial scrubs and toothpaste that rinse down drains and pollute oceans and lakes, are now banned in “rinse-off” products in the U.S. But it’s not like those products are great for the environment now: you’re probably still slathering other lesser-known petrochemical ingredients on your face, like methylparaben and propylene glycol. One company wants to replace those ingredients–along with plastics used in other everyday products–with silk.

These Electric Busses Could Start Cleaning Up National Park Travel

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 13:00:00 GMT

A zero-emissions transport fleet is looking pretty good in the face of rolled back federal protections and record-setting park congestion.

Under the Donald Trump administration, the national parks and monuments in the United States have entered into an era of unprecedented threat. Earlier in December, the President moved to slash the size of two national monuments in Utah by a combined total of around 2 million acres, the largest rollback of federal land protections in history. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, who oversees federal lands, has notoriously said that the science around climate change is “unsettled,” and has plans to review further monuments and parks for cutbacks.

Twitter sure makes it easy to point out the questionable ethics of politicians

Hey guys, remember the “emoluments” clause of the U.S. Constitution that restricts a president’s ability to profit from his position? In case you’ve forgotten (or blocked it all out as a form of self-care), President Trump has been accused in at least three lawsuits of having conflicts of interests between his business life and his political office. While Trump was supposed to let his sons manage his business interests, a “director of diplomatic sales” has reportedly been steering visiting dignitaries toward the Trump International Hotel in Washington. Also, rates are up at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida and, as The Economist reports, according to Eric Trump, the family brand is now “the hottest it has ever been.”

In Defense Of Net Neutrality, Internet Pioneers Accuse FCC Of Not Understanding Tech

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 11:20:16 GMT

Tech luminaries tell legislators that the FCC doesn’t know what it’s talking about and ask Congress to pull the plug on this week’s policy vote.

On Thursday, the FCC will vote to eliminate regulations that prohibit internet service providers from blocking, slowing, or speeding up the delivery of data based on business relationships they have with the content providers. Having failed to sway the agency to change course, opponents are making a last-ditch effort to save neutrality by asking Congress to intervene—at least delaying the vote until a few outstanding matters, like potentially a million fraudulent public comments, can be sorted out.

Try This Simple Trick To Beat Your Public Speaking Anxiety

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 11:00:02 GMT

For starters, stop rehearsing in front of a mirror or on camera.

Back in 2001, Gallup researchers found speaking in public was one of the things Americans fear the most, behind snakes, but ahead of heights, needles, and airline travel. And while the world of 2017 is a scary place in many ways, there’s little reason to suspect the popular fear of public speaking has dissipated. (That issue still routinely crops up among Fast Company’s most popular articles, at any rate.)

My Family Doesn’t Approve Of My Career—Now What?

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 08:00:15 GMT

Can’t shake the parental pressure and just do what you want? You’re not alone.

I often tell people I have fairly liberal parents, all things considered. As the child of Indian immigrants, it’s something I’ve come to appreciate, especially when it comes to my chosen career path. You could say my parents got catfished: When I went to college, I fancied myself the next Atul Gawande and chose to major in journalism while simultaneously striving for medical school, taking all the necessary pre-med coursework and even taking the MCAT.

The athletic apparels giant has announced it is relocating its Niketown store on East 57th Street to a new space five blocks away come Spring–despite its current lease not expiring for another five years, reports Crain’s. So why the move away from one of the hottest retail avenues in New York City, especially when you’ve committed to paying another five years’ worth of rent? It could have something to do with the fact that the current Niketown space is owned by the Trump Organization, suggests Crain’s:

Germany’s BfV domestic intelligence service has revealed that Chinese intelligence services are using fake LinkedIn profiles to connect with high-ranking German officials and politicians to gather information on them, reports Reuters. Most of the fake profiles used by Chinese intelligence purported to be headhunters, consultants, think-tankers, or scholars and many of their profile photos showed “stylish and visually appealing young men and women.” One profile picture was even taken from an online fashion catalog, according to German officials. In the nine months the BfV has been investigating China’s use of information gathering over LinkedIn, the intelligence service says over 10,000 German citizens had been contacted by the fake profiles used by Chinese intelligence services.
